Mr Iyengar was credited with his own brand of yoga, and taught author Aldous Huxley and violinist Yehudi Menuhin, among other celebrities.

Iyengar yoga is now taught in more than 70 countries and the guru's books have been translated into 13 languages.

One of yoga's finest teachers, Mr Iyengar practised what he called an "art and science" for more than eight decades.

He continued to practise - "practice is my feast", he once told a correspondent - in his old age and could still do the sirsasana - or the headstand - for half an hour until last year.

He used around 50 props, including ropes and mats, to align and stretch the body.

Iyengar was considered one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world and had written many books on yoga practice and philosophy.

They found that those who exercised the most had a 25% lower chance of developing cancer than those who were the least active. They further found that among younger, physically active women, those who slept less than seven hours a night had a 47% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer than those who regularly got a good night’s sleep.

Greater participation in physical activity has been consistently associated with reduced risk of cancer incidences at several sites, including breast and colon cancers. The researchers felt that short duration sleep appears to have opposing effect on several hormonal and metabolic parameters. But it is not yet clearly known why exercise reduces cancer risk but they believe it could be due to lower body weight, improved immune function and hormone levels associated with it. Insufficient sleep has been linked to high risks of developing a number of conditions including heart disease, obesity and diabetes. However, they haven’t yet determined exactly how exactly how sleep prevents disease.

Anyway, whatever be the outcome, we are all aware rigorous physical activity and good night’s rest always make us feel brisk and healthy. If you practice ‘YOGA’ you will get both physical activity and good sleep.

AN ENJOYABLE JOURNEY CALLED YOGA

Yoga represents a process through which one can learn how to live in the most integrated way. Therefore, it involves the process of identification and then elimination of all that would contribute to disintegration.

The term yoga is derived from yugil (Sanskrit), which means unite or integrate. It’s a combination of science and arts and a highly enjoyable journey towards perfection. One can trace the origin of yoga way back to the Indus Valley Civilisation, ie, at least 3,000 years BC. And for the past 5,000 years, it has remained as one of the most important facets of our culture.

With the goal of restructuring the society on spiritual values, through revival of ancient yogic discipline, Swami Kuvalayananda established the Kaivalyadhama Yoga institute in 1924, at Lonavla, near Pune. It is one of the oldest yoga institutes in the country and recently played host to the 6th International Conference on Yoga Research & Cultural Synthesis, where over 1,200 delegates participated from the world, including the US, France, Brazil, China, Germany, Canada, Greece, Argentina, Korea and Japan.

Yoga represents a process through which one can learn how to live in the most integrated way. Therefore, it involves the process of identification and then elimination of all that would contribute to disintegration. Hence, it becomes a continuous process, requiring constant vigilance, involving all the aspects of life.

According to O P Tiwari, one of the most recognised and accomplished masters of yoga and chief administrative officer of Kaivalyadhama, “Yoga, which is a science of personal growth for spiritual experiences, has simultaneously become a science of health and healing. All its techniques and methods are geared for bringing the healing touch to the body and mind, which suffer from ill-health.”

For this purpose, it has three main components.

First is the practical discipline (asanas, pranayama and dhyana). Asanas involve the increased awareness of various physical and physiological processes influenced by controlled stretching contraction and relaxation of various muscles, their co-ordination in balancing and during maintenance of posture. Pranayama similarly involves the manipulation of breathing mechanism along with the awareness of the pressure changes inside the chest cavity and abdomen. Dhyana increases the awareness of one's mental processes, including the thoughts, emotions and memory. It can make one aware how the constant restlessness at the level of mind contributes to the feeling of emotional stress, constant fear and insecurity. This increased awareness, combined with the techniques of dhyana, restores the psycho-physiological functions back to its healthy and balanced state.

Second component is the regulation of diet as well as daily habits involving the pattern of sleep, recreational activities and working habits. This helps remove all those irritants, which are responsible for the imbalance in the functioning of body-mind complex.

Third are the changes in one's attitude, behaviour and lifestyle, which help induce the feeling of sharing, warmth in friendship and concern, love and respect for the whole world. This acts as an antidote for the feeling of hopelessness, and loneliness. “If you do yoga keeping this spirit in mind and comply with all the instructions given to you, you would find that yoga not only gives you relief from your problems but also opens up a new way of enjoying your life,” adds Tiwari.

Many a time, when people talk about yoga, they focus their attention on the first component involving asanas, pranayama and dhyana. Thus they confine yoga to a small period of their daily life as if rest of the day has nothing to do with it.

Swami Kuvalayananda’s excellent work in the field of yogic culture attracted the attention of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and today, Kaivalyadhama has branches in Mumbai, Rajkot, Delhi and Bhopal, USA and France.

Inputs from O P Tiwari

“YOGA” ‘COMPLETELY’ CHANGED JENNIFER ANISTON’S LIFE

“YOGA” ‘COMPLETELY’ CHANGED JENNIFER ANISTON’S LIFE

Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston has revealed that yoga has 'completely' changed her life.

Appearing in the introduction to her yoga instructor Mandy Ingber's workout DVD 'Yogalosophy', Aniston, 40, said: "It is one of the most fun workouts I have ever had. Ron Glaser, a co-author and a professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics, said that the study has some fairly clear implications for health.

“We know that inflammation plays a major role in many diseases. Yoga appears to be a simple and enjoyable way to add an intervention that might reduce risks for developing heart disease, diabetes and other age-related diseases. This is an easy thing people can do to help reduce their risks of illness,” he said.

The study was published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA

TAI JI CAN MAKE YOGA EFFECTIVE

Chinese martial art and dance form, Tai Ji, yoga Tai Ji, the ancient Chinese martial art and dance form, can be used for making Indian yoga more relaxing and spontaneous for effective healing and circulation of positive energy in the human body, globally acclaimed Tai Ji master Chungliang Al Huang says.

"Tai ji (sometimes pronounced Tai Chi in the west) facilitates movement of energy in the body through free and sweeping gestures of hands and limbs. It opens the 'chakras' or the energy points in the body like Indian yoga, which also operates on the same principle," said Huang.

But unlike the seven 'chakras' in the Indian yogic tradition, Tai Ji supplies energy to endless energy points in the body, he pointed out.

The Tai Ji master was in the capital for an hour-long demonstration and lecture on "Living Tao-Ancient Wisdom for Modern Living" Tuesday at the Azad Bhavan auditorium of theIndian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Huang, who teaches Tai Ji in New York with his American wife Susanne, has worked with Hollywood stars like Sammy Davies Jr, Bruce Lee and Mary Martin and musicians John Denver and Joan Baez.

He moved to the US at the age of 17 and has also appeared in movies like "Flower Drum Song" and "The Green Hornet" starring Bruce Lee. Huang has also collaborated with philosophers and writers like Joseph Campbell, Allan Watts and the Dalai Lama.

The Tai Ji master is the founder-president of the Living Tao Foundation and the director of the Lan Ting Institute in the sacred Wuyui Mountain of China and at the Gold Beach in Oregon.

"I wanted to become Fred Astair, but my friends in Hollywood, with whom I worked in movies, wanted to learn Tai Ji from me," Huang said.

The Tai Ji master was born in Shanghai in the middle of the Sino-Japanese war and was raised in the province of Fujian, where he learnt his art in the villages "by osmosis - watching others dance".

Huang has also authored several spiritual best-sellers like "Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain: The Essence of Tai Ji" and the "Chinese Book of Animal Powers".

"These are books on Taoism - the ancient Chinese philosophy - practised before the birth of the Buddha. Tai Ji, as it is danced today, is an offshoot of natural Taosim - an animist form of taoist religion," Huang said.

He was invited to India by ICCR president Karan Singh. "This is my third visit to India. I first visited the country in 1982 and then in 2000, where I met Karan Singh," Huang said.

Explaining the similarities between Tai ji and Indian yoga, Huang said: "The basic principle in yoga and Tai Ji is to connect to the universal power and to bring positive energy into the being. But the difference is that yoga sometimes becomes static, blocking the flow of energy because of the stress on breathing. Tai Ji, in contrast, allows the practitioner to breathe naturally and move the body in rhythm with the chi (energy), the yin and the yang (male and female) forces."

Huang allows his students to make sounds while dancing Tai Ji. "The essence of the sounds of Tai Ji is 'om' - representing the heart, 'ah' - the throat and upper torso, and 'ha' - the lower chakra or the gut," the master said.

According to Huang, Tai ji has "potent healing powers"." Research is underway in the US to prove that it even cures cancer," the master said.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA --- INFORMATION

SWAMI RAMDEV’S SCOTTISH YOGA RETREAT TO BE MADE IN TO A WORLDWIDE DESTINATION

The owners of an island in Scotland that is being used to promote yoga as taught by controversial guru Swami Ramdev, have said that they intend to make it a worldwide destination and a place where a family can enjoy a wholesome experience.

Glasgow care homeowners Sam and Sunita Poddar bought the island of Wee Cumbrae for 2.5 million pounds in July and have renamed it Shanti Dwipam, ( which in Sanskrit called as Peace Island).

Sunita credits Patanjali Yog with curing her of severe obesity and says she and her husband hope to turn the island into a popular yoga and meditation retreat.

"Our aim is to make Wee Cumbrae a worldwide destination with something for the whole family to enjoy," she told Sky News.

"Whether it is experiencing the rejuvenating and healing powers of Yog Pranayam and Ayurved, exploring the magnificent history of the island, enjoying the many walking trails, or experiencing the many gifts of nature this beautiful island has to offer, we want to make Wee Cumbrae accessible for everyone," she added.

Swami Ramdev's controversial teachings have earned a mass following.

Wee Cumbrae is a 700-acre island off the Ayrshire coast. That is why most people want their children enrolled into some physical activity, so that children can put that energy to good use. Of late, children have boundless energy. But all that needs to be channelised. Yoga for children has become a trend. You hear about it in clubs and even some schools. Experts believe that practicing some simple yogasanas can help children reign in their energies and use it to better their performance, posture, dietary habits, improve concentration and overall personality. It will be a good idea to start kids on yoga sessions early, when their faculties have developed well enough. In fact, watch kids at play and you will notice that most of them can twist and turn almost effortlessly, jump, bend and sit in any manner they fancy. Many of those movements can be found in yogasanas too. Do you know that children start performing yoga postures while in the moth er's womb itself? They love doing yoga and it is easy for them to do and it is a joy filled session. You can get them started as early as two years of age, beginning with postures!

Slowly introduce them to yoga series like sun salutations (suryanamaskar). They love doing sun salutations. Sun salutations give all the fuel necessary for your child to grow healthy,to be creative,to be centered and to be focused. It helps improve stamina, strength in bones and muscles, flexibility,co-ordination, digestion, assimilation, improves memory, concentration and dynamism. These 12 postures are good enough for overall health and fitness to your child. They can do upto 10 rounds! By the age of five they will be able to do 54 to 108 rounds, which most adults cannot! As you see them progress in these 12 postures of the sun, you can then introduce them to the art of breathing, relaxation and meditation. These techniques will teach them the art of living and life. They become intellectual, peaceful, creative and compassionate. They become more loving towards them selves, to family and to the society in general. May your child bring glory to your home, society and the entire world!.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA -- PART -- 20

LIGHT THE TORCH WITH PRACTICE OF YOGA
Yoga can help establish connection between mind and body through the nervous system, aided by spiritual awareness. Cultivating Light the torch with practice of yoga (Getty Images) spiritual consciousness requires the activation of the kundalini which is the Vagus tenth cranial nerve lying dormant in the Manipur chakra. A person meditates in stage-wise inverted poses such as the following: Shoulder-Stand Pose, Pelvic Pose, Plough Pose, Corpse Pose and the final Lotus Pose.
In the Shoulder-Stand pose, due to the vertical position of the legs and the trunk, the venous blood drains away by the force of gravity to the right side of the heart and then to the lungs for purification. The purification of the entire blood circulating in the body is the first stage of operation. In the Pelvic pose, the blood accumulates in the pelvic region; the local blood vessels get dilated and flush the gonads situated in this region. Due to gravity, the venous blood returns to the heart. There is a propelling of the whole process enhancing the secretion of sexual glands. It delays the ageing process and strengthens the body for meditation.
In the Plough Pose, there is a stretching of the vertebral column due to which the spinal cord located inside it and also the nerves issuing from it are stretched. It results in an indirect pull on the sympathetic cords that lie on both sides of the spine in the abdomen and are connected with the spinal cord by nervous strands.
Stimulation of the sympathetic system tones up the involuntary organs of the body. A chain of these activities finally activates the kundalini, directing it through a path going to the spinal cord to awaken spiritual consciousness. Thus, we tone up the spinal cord to make it fit to receive and to retain the subtle unconscious impressions dramatically. Along with kundalini, the other six chakras also get activated and start imparting the knowledge of eternal life, Brahmn.
However, at the end of inverted poses, the Corpse pose is essential to give recuperative time to the body muscles for relaxation as well as to give the body conscious rest whereby one can vitalise and control the activities of all involuntary organs of the body.
The Lotus Pose is the ultimate meditative pose in which case the foot lock resembles the petals of the lotus due to which flexors of the lower extremities are under pressure as a result of contraction. Therefore arterial blood gets accumulated in the organs of the pelvic region toning up the function of the gonads followed by absorption of the secretions. Now, the person can control his feelings and keep the mind away from worldly temptations. The mind is trained and stabilised to receive the waves of inner voices. One can concentrate on receiving Divine messages. This way, spiritual consciousness is awakened.
As soon as the kundalini is activated, there is a rise in a person's energy level. He can utilise this energy wherever he desires. This is not a miracle but a process affecting a reversal and reabsorption of secreted elixir of life followed by spiritual consciousness. It is an ecstatic breakthrough. If a person follows explicit perfection in the art of reverse yogic poses, he can light the torch of spirituality to reveal the path to the inner soul and the eternal world. One begins to experience the truth of Soham Brahmashri, meaning 'am that Non-Destructible World'.

The writer Mr.Nilkanth Maladkar is a scientist. You can contact him at E-mail: maladkarun@gmail.com

SPLENDOR OF YOGA ----- INFORMATION

YOGA.....HELPING CANCER SURVIVORS

A nonprofit organization has been linking cancer survivors with free yoga classes to help them rebuild their strength and healthy lifestyle in New Yoga helping cancer survivors rebuild strength (Getty Images) York.
Yoga Bear has been assisting survivors land free memberships to local yoga studios post-treatment in a bid to help them reclaim their energies.
The nationwide program has seen the involvement of more than 140 yoga studios, including 21 in the Big Apple.
Cancer survivor Stephanie Adams, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 27, revealed how the traditional Indian discipline proved a blessing after two surgeries and endless chemotherapy treatments drained her of her previously high energy levels.
"I can’t go out and do pushups, I can’t go out and run and work out my upper body like I used to. We need some kind of means to give our self. Whatever we may give in our life to anybody – we may give money, we may give food, or something else – all the things we actually give do not belong to us. Whatever we have today, the things around us, including our body – we gathered from this earth. And when we go, we have to give it back. We can’t take one cell of our body and go.

Whatever we have today with us is something that we have borrowed from this planet. It is not really ours. We can use it, we can enjoy it, but we really cannot own it. So, what doesn’t belong to us, we cannot give. There is really no giving.

Fundamentally, the only thing we can give is our self. But we do not know how to give our self simply. So we give through our money, food or something else. We are using a thing as a means to give. We are using activity as a means to give our self.

If we are not aware of this, then giving becomes a great problem. And if we don’t make our self willing to give our self, giving becomes a very painful process.

When we understand giving as giving only things, then naturally fear will come into us. This is because we tend to think, “If we give away everything, what will happen to us?” It is because of this understanding that we fear giving. Many have become stingy, miserly with their love, with their joy, simply because they only think in terms of – giving means things.

How many things can we give? “If we give away lots of things tomorrow nothing will be there.” So from this economy, slowly, we have become less loving, less joyous and less peaceful.

We can give only our self through whatever we do. So volunteering is a process of giving our self. It’s an opportunity to give us .We can simply sit here, close our eyes and give our self to the world. It is possible. But that level of awareness is not there in most human beings. Unless there is activity, people don’t know how to give themselves. They need action to give themselves towards something. So volunteering is a tremendous possibility in that direction which helps us gives our self. – We can really offer our self through our work.

Normally, in whatever little work we have to do, there are calculations. “How much should we do? Why should we do? What will we get out this?” In these calculations all the beauty of doing is gone. In these calculations the very process of life will become ugly.

Most of the things that we are doing in our life are things that we have chosen to do. In spite of that, in day-to-day activity, to do simple things, we struggle so much because we are unwilling to give. Some have forgotten that we have started this willingly. Whether it is our work, our marriage, our family, or whatever, we started all these willingly because we wanted them in our life. But once we started, we forgot why we started this, and now we have started giving unwillingly and it has become a painful process.

So volunteering is a way of learning to make our lives into a process of just giving. Volunteer means one who is willing. Not just to do this or that. He is simply willing. He is willingness

How to become 100 per cent willing? It is always best to start in a protected atmosphere, so that willingness can perpetuate into our everyday life as well and above all into we being so that we become willing.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA.......IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

SUPER BRAIN YOGA

Thoppukaranam (sit-ups with holding left ear with right hand and right ear with left hand), the traditional expression of devotion towards Hindu God Lord Ganesha practiced throughout India since centuries ago has now found a scientific interpretation.

A research by scientists of the celebrated Yale University School of Medicine has found that holding the ears in devotion and doing the sit-ups improved brainpower and the scientists named these sit-ups as Super Brain Yoga.

“SBY (Super Brain Yoga) stimulates neuro pathways in the brain by activating the acupuncture points on the ear lobes. Holding the left ear activates the right brain while holding the right ear activates the left brain,” Dr. Eugenius Ang Jr, YUSM told a US TV channel. According to Dr. Ang, SBY pumps up cells and neuron activities in the brain. Patients suffering from memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and even kids showed improved results with SBY.

Raina kotebra, an occupational therapist in Malibu, said that SBY helped a seven-year-old ward of her who was suffering from acute emotional disorder.

Dr. Eric Robins, a physician describes SBY as a fast, simple and drug-free method of improving brain energy.

Choa Kok Sui, in his book Miracles on Pranik Healing has explained how the SBY helps in strengthening brain. “When the right ear lobe is gently squeezed with left thumb and left index finger with the thumb outside, it produces the necessary energy connection. This connection causes the left brain and pituitary gland to become energized and activated. Similar is the case with left ear lobe and right hand.”

More details have been posted at Superbrainyoga.org.

EYE YOGA

Veteran singer Sir Paul McCartney has picked up a unique new exercise routine from India- eye yoga.

In an interview on U.S. TV, the 66-year-old singer demonstrated his new exercise regime, which has him staring in different directions and holding for 20 seconds.

He learnt the exercise during his trip to India during last year.

An eye yoga expert at a hotel in India taught him the exercise, and the former Beatle indulges in an eye workout up to six times a day.

"He told me eyes are muscles (and) are just like any other muscles and they need exercise to keep them working properly," the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

"Spending so much time at computers or the TV or reading books, we are only using one set of muscles in our eyes. It soon became very popular around the world because of its many positive effects. This particular meditation technique is independent of local values, religions, faiths and political convictions.

Transcendental Meditation not only improves your ability to focus but it stimulates creativity and works wonders for your physical health. It is proven that those engaged in regular practice of Transcendental Meditation have fewer medical problems than those who are not.

No other meditation technique has been so extensively studied and researched. During transcendental meditation, the brain falls into a theta brain wave pattern (akin to sleep and deep relaxation), which then carries over to the state of wakefulness. Physical benefits include increased mental comprehension, focus, retention and creativity. Another interesting benefit is the actual reversal of the aging process. In a study conducted by the International Journal of Neuroscience, the biological age of practitioners of transcendental meditation was, on average, twelve years younger than their chronological age.
The first three states of this technique of meditation are awakening, dream and dream sleep less. These states are usually the countries that can be achieved in many other meditation techniques, not just one. The fourth state is called the transcendental consciousness, which in time can be maintained that the person practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique goes on his daily life.

The benefits of meditation can be availed of by anyone who decides to practice this art. There are many misconceptions related to meditation such as it is exclusively for people who are on a spiritual search or that it is concerned with focusing or concentrating. Meditation is not concentration, though concentration can be a by-product and benefit of meditation.

The health benefits of meditation are astounding. The simple act of breathing properly in meditation (and the rest of the time, once you develop the habit) massages and relaxes our muscles and organs. This causes the chi to flow more easily through our body, cleansing and rejuvenating it. At deeper levels we can use meditation to focus more energy on specific organs or muscles to help cleanse them of disease and stress.

The benefits of meditation also include getting a handle on your emotions. A lot of the time we let our emotions run our lives, but we need to realize that most of these negative emotions are coming from obsessive thoughts about the future or the past. The past is over and we have no immediate control of the future so people need to learn to be present to get conscious, or in touch with their inner, true self.

                                 BENEFITS OF TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION
                                                      FOR MIND
It helps the meditator to achieve better memory, clearer and more orderly thinking, greater creativity and ability to focus, use of your whole brain and its full potential, sharper intellect, higher IQ, better grades, more alertness and expanded consciousness.

FOR BODY It helps relieve stress, attain more energy, better health, lower medical expenses, younger body, better sleep, lower blood pressure, reduced alcohol use. Perfection personified, a beautiful, million-dollar body graced by an even more enticing face -- who wouldn’t want to be oh-so-gorgeously endowed? Whether it’s going gaga over their impossibly sculpted bodies or dreaming of toning up those loose ends to make heads turn, the operating word this season is YOGA.

Far from confines of trusted gymnasiums, youngsters have now started embracing YOGA as a complete package, a dual therapy of sorts that promises both fitness and happiness.

This also means that the therapies aka Power Plates and Pilates have made way for yoga and its bliss.

Its common knowledge that once you go to the gym, flexibility goes for a toss. You will always need yoga to regain that flexibility. To add to it, people who are constantly on the move or lead extremely fast-paced lives may not be able to accommodate the workout that a gym offers. By the time you’re done with it you have no energy to move on to the next thing on hand. WITH YOGA, IT’S THE ABSOLUTE REVERSE. You feel refreshed internally and externally and can immediately start jet-setting through life.

When it comes to women, yoga is definitely the discipline to opt for. Yoga can be practiced at anytime and anywhere, even during hectic schedules. In comparison to a regular workout in the gym, you will not feel fatigued.

FIND YOUR SPIRITUAL ENERGY

1) MEDITATE: Meditation is one of the best ways to help you understand your spiritual energy and tap into it. Meditation will also help you in your quest to find the right spiritual path. As you clear your mind, the answers to some of the most difficult questions can become clear. If you focus on spiritual energy within yourself, you will see the correct path.

2) PRAYER: Spiritual prayer is another way to tap into your spiritual energy. Prayer renews your faith and increases the strength of your spiritual energy tenfold. Take the path that will help you the most in your life. While the answer may not always be what you feel it should be, you will accept it.

3) NO NEGATIVE THOUGHTS: It’s easy to get depressed. Often our minds are overtaken by negative thoughts which can easily deplete our spiritual energy. It’s easy to feel yourself pulled off of your spiritual path. Shrug off negative thoughts and surround yourself with positive friends and influences.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA -- PART -- 16

LAUGHTING IS ALSO ANOTHER GIFT OF NATURE’S EXERCISE DICTIONARY………LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE

Researchers have found that laughter improves our mood, reduces anxiety, eases stress and adds years to our life.

The best things in life may not be free, but there is one thing which can do wonders, and it cost nothing – laughter. The adage “laughter is the best medicine” holds very much true even today.

Researchers have found that laughter improves our mood, reduces anxiety, eases stress, and is associated with creativity and emotional stability. Laughter helps lower blood pressure, adds years to our life and also helps one distress. SO WHY NOT LAUGH and through ALL OUR WORRIES AWAY.

A new study from the University of Maryland Medical Centre has shown that laughter, along with a healthy sense of humor is good for our heart.

Even though scientists yet to know why laughing protects the heart, but they have noted that mental stress is associated with impairment of the endothelium, the protective barrier lining our blood vessels. This can cause a series of inflammatory reactions that lead to fat and cholesterol build-up in the coronary arteries and ultimately to a heart attack. But scientists know that during laughter, hormones are released in the body which relax the mind and body. There is decrease in hormones which produce stress hormones adrenaline and steroids. There is also release of hormones dopamine and serotonin, which provides us with a feeling of well-being.

There are several laughter clubs in the world, even though it may be mechanical laughter, they help people distress and relax. Once there is decrease in stress hormones, there is reduction in diseases like heart problems, blood pressure and diabetes.

READ BOOKS..........BE FIT AND FINE.

When you start reading a book, you will sit properly, which is nothing but a Meditative posture. Then while reading your breathing will be regulated, which is good for the body and the mind. Finally, by concentrating on the book, you will reach a state of meditation. Some consider books more valuable than any thing. So, when you feel pressure, stressed frustrated or uneasy.....Start reading a book. Even the book has already been read by you, read again.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA -- MORE INFORMATION --THINK IT OVER

ENERGY CAN BE GIVEN TO ANOTHER
Modern day psycologists have proved that more than 80 per cent of diseases are psycosomatic. They originate from the mind and then come to the body. The root is the mind, not the body. In the body there are energy centres that get locked when the disease takes the root. If you can get the right technique to remove the blockage, the disease disappears.
But some of us may not be able to get the right technique and find time to meditate or may not be able to make enough energy to put in to meditation. For those kinds of people, somebody else who is a meditator, who is a master of meditation can meditate and pass the energy to the energy centres of the person who is suffering.
Here comes the question: How can energy be given?....There are few people who are ready to believe that energy can be created by meditation; but they are not ready to believe that energy can be given by somebody else.
Einstein says, "Whatever exists is energy." After Einstein's theory, many scientists have turned towards spirituality. Einstein, through his formula E=mc2, says that there is know borderline between matter and energy. The solid energy is matter;subtle matter is energy.
Matter and energy are one and the same in two different levels. Classical physicists declared that there are two states in an atom; one is static and the other is moving. Later, the understanding is changed to the same particle being static at one time and moving at another. Today, the understanding is the particle is static and moving at the same time. There is no space
or time gap. Therefore, whatever you call matter is nothing but energy; whatever you call energy is nothing but matter.
Whatever exists is energy. So, if matter can be given to somebody else, why not energy? If one give his glass to you, why can't he give energy also? Only thing one should know while giving is the right time and the right method of giving it. If a person knows the right technique of channelling and giving energy, it can be given and can be taken also.
The science of giving energy to the person who is in need of it is what spiritual healing is all about. It is a balance of the energy flow in the person's system so that his system heals itself.
Spiritual healing is channellng and radiating univesal cosmic energy. it is an easy and effortless meditation for the healer initiated by an enlightened master while energy is channelled into the person receiving the healing.
RELIEVE YOURSELF FROM ANXIETY,STRESS AND DEPRESSION.
BREATHING EXERCISES
Take a moment to close your eyes and focus only on breathing. Inhale slowly through your nose. Feel your diaphragm move up into your ribcage and extend your belly outward as you inhale. Each breath should take six seconds to cmplete. Spend three seconds slowly inhaling through your nose and the other three seconds slowly exhaling through your mouth.
LISTEN TO MUSIC
Sit back and relax with your favorite tunes. If you are feeling nostalgic, put on something that will transport you toanother place in time. Escape and think of nothing but the music. Try to play songs with a positive or uplifting message.
MEDITATE ON GRATITUDE
Take a few minutes to think about all the things you are greatful for. It could be as simple as feeling grateful for the food in your fridge or the way your puppy loves you. Take the time to appriciate as all the gifts you have in life and how lucky you are to have them. When you acknowledge the good in your life, more good will attract itself to you.

HAPPY 2009

AS THIS YEAR DRAWS TO AN END, I WANT TO THANK ALL THE SPECIAL PEOPLE WHO TOUCHED MY LIFE WITH THEIR LOVE & CARE AND MADE MY LIFE MORE MEANINGFUL. It is often practiced to strengthen muscles and the cardiovascular system, and to hone athletic skills. Frequent and regular physical exercise boosts the immune system, and helps prevent diseases of affluence such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. It is also improves mental health and helps prevent depression.
Types of exercise.
Exercises are generally grouped into three types depending on the overall effect they have on the human body: Flexibility exercises such as stretching improve the range of motion of muscles and joints.Aerobic exercises such as cycling, walking, running, hiking, and playing tennis focus on increasing cardiovascular endurance.Anaerobic exercises such as weight training, functional training or sprinting increase short-term muscle strength.Exercise benefitsPhysical exercise is important for maintaining physical fitness and can contribute positively to maintaining a healthy weight; building and maintaining healthy bone density, muscle strength, and joint mobility; promoting physiological well-being; reducing surgical risks; and strengthening the immune system.
Frequent and regular aerobic exercise has been shown to help prevent or treat serious and life-threatening chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, insomnia, and depression. Strength training appears to have continuous energy-burning effects that persist for about 24 hours after the training, though they do not offer the same cardiovascular benefits of aerobic exercises. Exercise can also increase energy and raise one's threshold for pain.
There is conflicting evidence as to whether vigorous exercise (more than 70% of VO2 Max) is more or less beneficial than moderate exercise (40 to 70% of VO2 Max). Some studies have shown that vigorous exercise executed by healthy individuals can effectively increase opioid peptides (aka endorphins, a naturally occurring opiate that in conjunction with other neurotransmitters is responsible for exercise induced euphoria and has been shown to be addictive), positively influence hormone production (i.e., increase testosterone and growth hormone).benefits that are not as fully realized with moderate exercise.
Exercise has been shown to improve cognitive functioning via improvement of hippocampus-dependent spatial learning, and enhancement of synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis. In addition, physical activity has been shown to be neuroprotective in many neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. For instance, it reduces the risk of developing dementia.Physical activity is thought to have other beneficial effects related to cognition as it increases levels of nerve growth factors, which support the survival and growth of a number of neuronal cells.
Both aerobic and anaerobic exercise also work to increase the mechanical efficiency of the heart by increasing cardiac volume (aerobic exercise), or myocardial thickness (strength training).
Not everyone benefits equally from exercise. There is tremendous variation in individual response to training: where most people will see a moderate increase in endurance from aerobic exercise, some individuals will as much as double their oxygen uptake, while others will never get any benefit at all from the exercise.Similarly, only a minority of people will show significant muscle growth after prolonged weight training, while a larger fraction experience improvements in strength. This genetic variation in improvement from training is one of the key physiological differences between elite athletes and the larger population.
EXERCISE AND BRAIN FUNCTION.
In the long term, exercise is beneficial to the brain by: increasing the blood and oxygen flow to the brain increasing growth factors that help create new nerve cells increasing chemicals in the brain such as dopamine, glutamate, norepinephrine and serotonin that help cognition.
ALL THAT EXPLAINED ABOVE ARE THEIR IN YOGA AND MEDITATION AND WILL GET BENIFITED .

SPLENDOR OF YOGA -- PART -- 15

SOME SIMPLE MEDITATION TECHNIQUES

PRACTICE "STOPPING"
When you stop, first physically and then through mindfulness of breathing, mentally you give yourself the possibility to catch up with yourself. In our hectic lifestyle at times, we can totally ignore how our body feels, how our mind and emotions are doing and be unaware of accumulated anxiety and stress. So, by stopping, you can begin to restore the important communication with your own self.
For example: When the phone rings, we let it ring three times and while it does so we consiously stop all other activity and come back to our physical body by breathing in and out. This way we use the telephone as means to cultivate peace, calmness and awareness. Similarly, using the computer at home or at work, we must take a short break every 45 minutes. Take a short break for five minutes and move away from the computer or just relax on your chair.Take couple of deep breaths in, relax and feel happy. Doing this will help you have more energy. This also gives you a better sense of how to continue your work.

(MY HONEST REQUEST TO ALL COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS AND SOFTWARE PROGRAMME MANUFACTURERS TO INCORPORATE A BELL RING SOUND IF AND WHEN A PERSON USES THE COMPUTER CONTINUEOUSLY FOR AN HOUR....A BELL RING TONE SHOULD ALERT THE USER TO REALX FOR 5 MINUTES. THIS WILL HELP MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD)

WALKING "MEDITATION"
This can be simple meditation. We walk very often, so we can easily use this as meditation. We need to slow down 50 -- 70 per cent and take gentle steps on the earth. We must allow our attention to go to the soles of our feet, allowing our energy to come down from heads to our belly and our feet. We may realise that while we are walking slowly, we are at the same time breathing in and out, and we may use this awareness to allow our minds to focus on this activity of walking slowly and being aware of our breathing.

DEEP "RELAXATION"
Lie down for 20 minutes. Take a break; sometimes the activities of the day deplete our energy. Take these 20 minutes for your own self to come back to your body, feeling any area where they may be tension, allowing your breathing in to expand your abdonimal area and letting go with breathing.
Enjoy some moments of silence, inner and outer. Slowly your body and then your mind will respond to this technique.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA -- PART -- 14

MEDITATION CAN CURE DEPRESSION.
MEDITATION HELPS Control long-term depression as well as prescription drugs....according to a new research. British researchers in a study, published in the JOURNAL OF CONSULTING AND CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY revealed that a psychological therapy, which included a range of MEDITATION EXERCISES are as effective in combating long-term depression as medication. In fact, the quality of life is much better....the study said that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) was as effective as maintenance anti-depressents in preventing a relapse and more effective in enhancing the patients quality of life. The study also showed that therapy was cost-effective as prescription drugs in helping people with a history of depression stay well in the longer-term.

CONNECT MIND WITH BODY TO BE HAPPY.
"Happiness is here and now, I have dropped my worries, nowhere to go and nothing to do, I don't need to hurry. Happiness is here and now, I have dropped my worries, nowhere to go and nothing to do,I don't need to hurry".....This is a practice song which enables us to live like free individuals and helps in embodying peace within...said Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Zen
master.
Despite materialistic acquisitions, many feel lonely, waiting for someone or something beyond our inner-self to bring us happiness. Sometimes we have all the comforts, but our spirit is empty and we feel incomplete. At the same time there are others who have limited comforts yet they seem to be content with life. We might think somany other things can cure loneliness, but seldom we realise that there are just another way of covering up the emptiness within us.

So, how can a person fill this emptiness within?..... The mortality rate among women suffering from cardiovascular diseases today is higher than that of men across the world.
Stress, then could be one of the many reasons for acquiring a heart ailment.

MEDITATION SAFEGUARDS BODY AS WELL AS MIND.
As the mind is in the state of self hypnosis, whatever you command to your mind is accepted and registered in the subconsious mind. If you practice MEDITATION early in the morning you will be astonished with the experience you get and it will surprise you.
When this exercise reached completeness our mind gets prepared for MEDITATION.
By meditation not only the organs of the body but also automatically and independently functioning parts can be brought in to control -- is said by a scientist. There is a connection between SLEEP and MEDITATION. In both of these states one is controlled in allways and keeps us healthy. HYPOTHALAMUS is stimulated. In sleep we are unconcious whereas in MEDITATION we are unconcious while being concious.
MEDITATION withers away tensions and purifies the mind and keeps us active, sharp and brisk. We can feel the awakeing of self awareness keeping us alert. Knowing oneself should be the only noble target in the sea of life, hence benefits will arise innumerably.

METHOD
Sit erect on a carpet, close the eyes; now search in to the closed eyes on the dark screen; then thought must settle on inhaling and exhaling. Then take a vow "Let the mind jupm wherever it likes; let it go wherever it wants but I won't open my eyes for 5 minutes." And remain in the pose.
After some days of practice increase it to 10 minutes and later on step by step increase it to 20 minutes. During the time of closed eyes just count numbers from 50 to 01 (depending upon the time, make it 30 to 01 or 20 to 01). For beginning this is enough.

LET US DISCUSS MORE ABOUT MEDITATION IN MY NEXT UPDATE....

SPLENDOR OF YOGA -- IMPORTANT INFORMATION -- PART -- 1

Man is a harmonious blending of body and a spirit- a marvellous fusion as physical structure, life-force and mental faculties that have evolved during countless millennia to a very high level of perfection. The human being has come into this world with a purpose viz., to develop his conciousness to the fullest extent and achieve perfection and everlasting peace. This is the goal of the human, its realisation is possible only if the physical body is maintained in a healthy condition. For this, we must first of all know something about the structure and working of the humanbody.
In the functioning of the human system, it is the life-force that plays the main role; the physical structure serves only as a container. a closer study of the human being will reveal that it consisits of five layers corresponding to the five elements: solid, liquid, heat, air and ether. Solid is the physical structure, liquid is the blood, heat is electricity, air is oxygen and ether is the life-force. The subtle life-force and the gross solid body are linked together by three media, viz., liquid, heat and air. If the normal quantity and quality of these media and the pace of their circulation within the human system are adversly affected in any way, the life-force in its electrical function gets short-circuited and the molecular arrangement in the physical body is disturbed or punctured. As a result, the life-force gets obstructed, diverted or exhausted in proportion to the extent of the disturbance and the intensity of the short-circuit. Whenever there is such disturbance, it is called pain. If the disturbance is more, the pain is also more, as there is corresponding increase in the exhaustion of the life-force. If the disturbance is for a short period, it is known as pain. if it extends over a long period, it is known as disease. If the disturbance is of such magnitude that a major portion of the life-force is exhausted, the functioning of the physical body gets paralyzed and comes to a standstill; such condition is known as death.
From the above analysis it will be clear that for maintaining good health one should guard against disturbances in the physical body, the life-force and the three media. Distrubances occur in two ways: either through our own actions or through the fuctioning of natural forces. Neglect, improper or over indulgence in food, sleep, work, sex and use of thought-force are the factors by which the disturbances are caused by our own actions; climatic differences, hereditary imprints and changes in the intensity of radiation of planets due to variation of distances and their conjunctions are the factors by which disturbances are caused by natural forces. Nature has provided a certain amount of immunity in all human beings against such distrubances. But if this immunity level is crossed, health gets impaired. We can, to a large extent, avoid these actions that cause such disturbances. But, sometimes, we become victims to circumstances and act in such a way that we cross the immunity level. It is not possible to avoid the consequences of the functioning of the natural forces. Hence, the only course of action open to us is to rise our immunity level, so that our body will be able to to withstand not only our own erroneous actions, but also the unpredictable onslaught of natural forces.
Over the centuries, man has discovered that throgh suitable physical exercises, he can develop and increase his immunity level so that he may gaurd against ill health. In case he falls a victim to disease due to unavoidable causes, he can recoup his health quickly.
There are two aspects in physical exercises: Postures and movements. the three media which we have referred to earlier (blood, heat and air) are circulating in the hyman system one within the other according to their specific gravity and they are governed by the centripetal pull exercised by the Earth. When the normal position of the body is altered or when a part of the body is moved or turned towards the Earth or away from it, the location of the three media in that portion or part is also altered. When a part of the body is turned towards the Earth, a little more blood flows to that part and little more air goes to the otherside or part of the body which is upward. In addition to this, if a rhythmic movement is also given, all the three media are suitably regulated. Through such systematic and well-regulated movements, the various parts of the body get cleansed, strengthened and rejuvenated. Thus we can, through proper physical exercises, achieve a level of immunity against diseases which will enable us to maintain good health in spite of occasional erroneous actions or adverse natural forces.
From time immemorial, various types of physical exercises have been formulated in various countries according to the climatic conditions, the mode of life and various other factors prevailing in those climates. These exercises were, to large extent, formulated to suit an earlier age which was one of leisure when things moved slowly. Times have changed and we now live in an age of speed, stress and tension. Hence, our needs too are different and we cannot blindly adopt the exercises devised long ago that were found suitable for those times.
SOURCE: Thathuvagnani Vethathri Maharshi.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA -- PART -- 12

SOME REALITIES ABOUT YOGA

YOGA is completely rational system for training a man to reach the highest possible levels of integrations. It can stand the tests of modern science also. It is universal, not bound by dogmas and beliefs of any particular religion. That it is available to all, irrespective of any limitation of race, caste, creed, sex, nationality, age, etc.,etc.
YOGA is the perfect control of mind and consiciousness on all its level. With perfection in it, the man is established in his absolute, genuine, unsullied state. In all other states, he is tainted by and involved in mental aberrations.
YOGA is a training by which man remains completely unaffected by worldly happenings. YOGA is complete freedom from misery.
.....women, commercial people and even those of lowest level, can reach the highest goal of YOGA.
As well as young, old, very old, decript, diseased, or weak person will attain success if he practses YOGA untiringly.

WHAT YOGA IS:
Many people have very wrong or confused conception about YOGA. They equate it to difficult, painful, acrobat-like feats performed by some mendicaments who are mistaken for yogins. Thus lying on a bed of nails, or swallowing glass-pieces, acids, poisons, and such other things are mistaken for yogic achievements. Others, seeing some elementary practices of some yoga schools, consider it to be a system of gymnastics for body building. Some consider it as a mystical system, some times associating it with certain religious rituals, or certain legendary gains of supernormal or miraculous power like walking on water, or in the fire, or flying through air, etc.
But YOGA essentially has nothing to do with these things. It is a very old, well-tested scientific system of training human organism in all its aspects-body, mind and spirit, and bring into it the highest possible integration.
Thus YOGA may be said to be a method to produce a well integrated man who is nearer to "super-man" as postulated even by some of today's thinkers.
All these definitions clearly indicate that YOGA is considered to be a method of producng a man who is most integrated, equilibrated, master of his own mind, who can face the adversities of the world and life blodly and overcome them in the most successful way.

THIS IS THE REASON W.H.O, THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION CALLS IT AS YOGA THERAPY IS AN ART OF CURING DISEASES. MANY COUNTRIES INTRODUCED YOGA TRAINING EVEN TO THE WELL ORGANIZED MILITARY PERSONS AND MANY CORPORATE COMPANIES AROUND THE WORLD STARTED GIVING TRAINING TO THEIR ALREADY HIGHLY SKILLED WORKFORCE TO FURTHER MAKE THEM STRONG AND INTELLIGENT.

SPLENDOR OF YOGA - PART - 11

THE CLOCK OF BODY ORGANS.
THE LAW OF NATURE PRONOUNCES THAT EACH VITAL 12 ORGANS IN HUMAN BODY WORKS AT ITS' ZENITH FOR TWO HOURS A DAY.
