Those who attended the preschool event at New Wilmington last Saturday were introduced to Wee Believe, a new resource for teaching toddler and preschool children in the church. If you would like to learn more about these materials, contact Margaret at the Presbytery office. She has samples, catalogues, and information she can share with you.

Good News!!! No Board of Pensions Increase, but Enhanced Coverage

The Board of Pensions (medical, pension, disability, life insurance) has announced that there will be no increase in the dues that churches pay. This is the third straight year with no increase. For more details, click here:http://www.pcusa.org/pcnews/2009/09563.

A Missional Idea

Some of the churches that have been involved in the Missional Church process have learned that you can take existing traditions from your church and try them in a completely new way. Mercer County Church Needed to Host Missionary Reception

We are looking for a centrally-located Mercer County Church for hosting a reception to introduce Darren and Elizabeth Kennedy (missionaries in Cairo) to mission committees of our churches. The Higher Education Committee of Shenango Presbytery has announced the list of college scholarship recipients for the upcoming school year. Anniversary Celebrated

Plain Grove Church celebrated its 210th anniversary on June 28. It also recognized the 46 members who have been on the church roll for fifty years or more. Approximately 35 of them were present.

Christian Comedian Will McDaniel to Appear at Clen-Moore

Clen-Moore Presbyterian will be hosting Will McDaniel on Friday, July 17th at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $5.00 each and are available by calling the church at 724-654-6657.

david will be performing at 1st Sharon in a coffee house style concert in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at 7:00 PM. Starbucks coffee will be served, along with desserts. Admission is free, but a feee will offering will be taken.

Tim Becker and Mark Bell, recent Pittsburgh Seminary graduates and PhD candidates in study of the Church Fathers, are starting an Ancient Christian Faith Initiative. 2009 Music Camp Concert at Camp Lambec
On Friday, July 17th , CAPNWP welcomes all church members and their guests to the sensational 2009 Music Camp Concert at Camp Lambec. The Band will perform at 7 PM and the Choir at 8 PM (rain or shine). The concert is free, although donations are welcome. For more information contact the Presbytery Office.

Root International is in need of 250 crayon boxes, pencils, glue and scissors. They also need zip lock bags to place the items in. Each bag will go out to a child attending a dining facility in Juarez and in Torreon, Mexico. They are also in need of primary Sunday School material, even if it is in English. Arts and craft material are also welcomed. Thank you all for your help and prayers. Contact Becky Vogan at 724-699-1182. Items are needed no later than the third week of August.

It will be from 9:30 to 11:00 AM at the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church. Those attending will see and use the material, listen to the music, have refreshments, share ideas with other teachers, and take home lots of ideas and samples. Everyone attending will also have a chance to win a beautiful "Bible Storytellers" bag for teachers. Babysitting will be provided. Register by calling Margaret at the Presbytery office or e-mail her at ched@shenango.org to let us know if you are coming or need babysitting. There is no charge for this event.

John Calvin 500th Birthday Celebration at Calvin Presbyterian Church

On July 12, Calvin Presbyterian Church, 615 Crescent Avenue, Ellwood City, will be celebrating the 500th Birthday of the Protestant Reformer John Calvin with a special 10:00 AM worship service including the Lord's Supper with a birthday lunch following the service. Special guest preacher for the day will be the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Partee, recently retired from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where he was P.C. Rossin Professor of Church History from 1978 to 2009. Most recently, Dr. Partee published a scholarly expostion of Calvin's theology and examination of the development of later Calvinism entitled, The Theology of John Calvin. It's that time of year again for the Silk Road Market sock and undie collection for the homeless youth in our area. Last year you brought in an amazing 496 pr of undies, 77 undershirts, and 442 pr of socks. I'd like to beat those numbers this year. The tight economy is hurting us all, but it's especially frightening for those who are losing their homes or their jobs. This isn't a big city problem. These are our neighbors and our friends in this situation. A pack of new socks or undies is such a small investment in our youth, but has a tremendous impact of love. So, here's my wish list for this summer. In order to help the largest group of kids, I'm looking for boys sizes 4 to 20 and girls sizes 4 to 16. Ingrid Reneau, our missionary in South Sudan, sent the following message yesterday. Please keep her family in your prayers.

Just a quick note to let you know my father passed away this morning after a long battle with bone cancer. Mom was by his side.

I will fly into Oakland, CA by Saturday.

Please pray that the Lord will embrace my mother with His loving arms, filling her heart with comfort and a peace that passes understanding. Also pray for my sisters and the rest of my family in their sorrow.

I also ask for your prayers regarding my trip home, that God will strengthen and sustain me as a torrent of emotions are swirling within. Pray that the Lord will use me as a channel of His love, comfort, and blessing while visiting my family.

PW Churchwide Gathering

There are six from Shenango Presbytery going to the Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women in Louisville, KY, July 11-15th. Ruth Marshall and Nancy McMillan will be serving as delegates. Also attending are Robbie Arnold, CLP of Bethlehem Church; Jane Braymer; Janice Good, Minister of Education at Tower Church; and Vickie White. The theme of the gathering is "God Will Do Wonders Among You".

Rejoice with Fellow Christians in the Sudan

We have received word from the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church's General Secretary Phillip Obang that the Eastern Presbytery will be established on Friday, July 3rd. When our partnership began 14 years ago SPEC had a few hundred members, mostly in the capital of Khartoum. Since then they have moved out from Khartoum Presbytery to establish Western Presbytery and now they will form the Eastern Presbytery. We expect to hear soon about a Southern Presbytery. Please join us in thanking God for the faithfulness of our Sudanese friends.

The tour will feature Geneva, Lucerne, Munich and great sights of the Alps, as well as the Passion Play, which is performed only every ten years. As we visit Geneva and other Reformation sights, there will be optional discussions on Calvin, Knox and our Presbyterian heritage offered. NWMC Scholarship Offered

Last week we sent out notification that the Youth Event had been cancelled due to lack of interest. We would still like to connect youth in our congregations to mission with the money that was set aside for the annual event, so we are proposing a small number of scholarships that would pay the full registration fee for a member of your church's youth group to attend the New Wilmington Mission Conferernce at the end of July. Full details were mailed last Friday to the attention of the Pastor/Youth Leader. For more information, please contact Auutmn or Debbie at the Presbytery Office. Applications are due to the Presbytery Office by June 19th and scholarships will be awarded on a first come-first served basis.

SPSC Needs a New Van
In 1995, with the help of Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care (SPSC) Auxiliary and donations from many friends, SPSC purchased a 12 passenger customized van with wheel chair lift. After thousands of doctor’s appointments and special outings later it’s time for a new van. As I’m sure you know, transportation is vitally important to our residents on a variety of levels. Our residents rely heavily on the van for getting to and from appointments. Most families do not have vehicles that are handicapped accessible. So for these families, the van is a godsend. Not only does the van help residents with their physical needs, but also it helps to lift their spirits. Afternoon rides and stopping for ice cream can do wonders for them, not to mention attending concerts, plays, and going to restaurants. We need your help. We are in desperate need of a new van. Please prayerfully consider what you may be able to give to “Help Us Get on the Bus” fundraiser at Shenango. Contact SPSC at 724-946-3516 for more information.

Youth Event CANCELLED - Scholarship Offered
Last week we sent out notification that the Youth Event had been cancelled due to lack of interest. We would still like to connect youth in our congregations to mission with the money that was set aside for the annual event, so we are proposing a small number of scholarships that would pay the full registration fee for a member of your church's youth group to attend the New Wilmington Mission Conferernce at the end of July. Full details were mailed last Friday to the attention of the Pastor/Youth Leader. For more information, please contact Auutmn or Debbie at the Presbytery Office. Applications are due to the Presbytery Office by June 19th and scholarships will be awarded on a first come-first served basis.

The featured speaker will be Richard Maag of Project Homecoming (the recovery group from the Presbytery of South Louisiana who spearheaded the distribution of the first tables created by the Western PA Table Project). Working for Darfur

Several churches in the Presbytery are asking their members to sign postcards to be sent to President Obama reminding him of the terrible tragedy unfolding in Darfur, Sudan. Five individuals from our churches: Gary and Betsy Barr and Miriam and Bill Gwin from Mt. Jackson, along with Tom Kaufman from 3rd, New Castle traveled to Washington, DC recently for the "Save Darfur" rally at Lafayette Park across from the White House. They appealed for humanitarian responses for the people of Darfur (photos can be viewed on our News & Events page). $21,114 was wired to the church in Sudan two weeks ago for this emergency. Over $15,000 of this came from our churches.

First Presby to Host Parenting Seminar

First Presbyterian, New Castle will host Generation 2 Generation, a Christian parenting seminar on May 9th from 9 AM to NOON. The event is presented by Homeward Parent Seminars and will features guest speaker, Mark DeVries, associate pastor for youth and families at First Presbyterian Chuch in Nashville, TN. An Update from Ingrid Reneau
Ingrid is leaving from Nairobi for the South Sudan on April 24 for at least 6 weeks, if they don't need to evacuate. Her laptop was stolen from her locked hotel room over Easter with all her work and pictures on it.

The Emergency Darfur Relief - over $20,000
In response to the expulsion of 13 relief organizations over $20,000.00 has been received from the Presbytery and beyond. It has already been wired to the Sudan. We will be sending another wire this summer, if you missed this opportunity to contribute. Also, some members of our Presbytery went to the rally in Washington D.C. and had the following to say, "It was very impressive, many good, inspiring speakers. Music was super. It really was a combination of spiritual and political gathering, if that is possible. So, we have to remember to pray not only for the people of Darfur and Sudan, but the politicians who also must be involved. " Photos from the rally will be featured on the "News & Events" page of the Presbytery website.

Missionary Speaker from Nigeria at Tower Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, April 21 at 7:30 PM in the Library/Lounge (second floor)
A co-worker of Call of Hope in Nigeria, Bro. Abdul will share about his mission work in this country called the Elephant of Africa. He works under very difficult conditions. Various times people wanted to kill him only because of his ministry. God has repeatedly saved him from death. Persecution is a fact in his workplace. Bro. Abdul is married; his wife's name is Mary. They have four grown-up children.

ESL Teachers Needed
Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship and the Ethiopian Network are looking for English as a Second Language teachers to go to Ethiopia. PFF will be offering English classes for elementary school teachers in the city of Shashemane, Ethiopia and we need 4 or 5 teachers and 1 or 2 aides. The ESL teachers would travel to Ethiopia on June 26th, 2009 and return the end of July. The estimated costs for lodging and food are $1,600 and the estimated cost for airfare is $2,500. ESL Teachers Needed
Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship and the Ethiopian Network are looking for English as a Second Language teachers to go to Ethiopia. PFF will be offering English classes for elementary school teachers in the city of Shashemane, Ethiopia and we need 4 or 5 teachers and 1 or 2 aides. The ESL teachers would travel to Ethiopia on June 26th, 2009 and return the end of July. The estimated costs for lodging and food are $1,600 and the estimated cost for airfare is $2,500. Invitation to Meet Darrell Guder
Dr. Darrell Guder, Dean of Princeton Theological Seminary, will be the speaker at the Pastors Retreat on May 4 – 5. Dr. Guder is probably the best known theologian on the subject of “missional church” which is central to the “Partnership for the Missional Church” project in which several of our congregations have been or will be participating. On Monday evening everyone is welcome to join the pastors at the Villa Maria Conference Center (left on Evergreen Road just before reaching the Ohio line on Rt. 422) at 6:30 pm. Please contact the Presbytery Office by April 13th indicating your plan to attend so that we may have space. We are inviting questions to be submitted ahead of time to organize the conversation.

Training for Mission in Your Community
World Mission Initiative is offering "Crossing Cultures"- http://www.worldmissioninitiative.org/events.htm. This is an eye-opening workshop that teaches how to reach out to and explore the cultures of local immigrants who live near you. This will open ministry opportunities to the people of different ethnicities who are beginning to settle in our communities.

The Emergency Darfur Relief - over $20,000
In response to the expulsion of 13 relief organizations over $20,000.00 has been received from the Presbytery and beyond. It will be wired this Wednesday to the Sudan. Spring Gathering to Focus on Missions
Thursday, April 16, is the Spring Gathering for Presbyterian Women in Shenango Presbytery. All women are invited to attend this day of interesting speakers, great fellowship, and informative displays, with a focus on local and international mission opportunities. Northminster Presbyterian Church in New Castle will host this event, and reservations for lunch ($6.00) and child care are due by April 9th to Nancy McMillin at 724-336-5623. Just another reminder...

Situation Desperate in Darfur...Contributions will be Sent in April
The International Criminal Court has indicted President Bashir of the Sudan on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity because of the atrocities that perpetrated in Darfur. In retaliation Bashir has expelled all western relief agencies. Not only does this cut relief by more than half to these already desperate people, it means that there are fewer observers of the continuing brutalization of the people of Darfur.

A friend from Sudan [no specific identification for security purposes] who visited us in December continues to make monthly trips to Darfur serving the suffering. Last year $6,000 was sent from our churches, including special gifts which he took with him upon his return in December.

The Darfur Mission Committee just returned to Khartoum and sent a letter and pictures of the tragic situation. He has requested funds. If your church is able to contribute, please be sure that your check reaches the Presbytery Office by March 31 so that the money may be wired the first week of April.
