Celebrating its 150th episode this season, 24 is one of the most innovative, addictive and acclaimed dramas on television. In its first six seasons, the suspenseful series was nominated for a total of 57 Emmy awards, winning for Outstanding Drama Series (2006) and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for star Kiefer Sutherland (2006). Season Six garnered a sixth consecutive Emmy nomination for Sutherland and second consecutive nomination for supporting actor Jean Smart.

“Day 7” of 24 promises to combine the show’s unique and trend-setting format with compelling new elements. Each episode again will cover one hour of real time, as viewers follow JACK BAUER (Kiefer Sutherland) through another astonishing day.

The series gets a jumpstart on the clock this fall with 24: EXILE, the unprecedented two-hour real-time “Day 7” prequel, airing Sunday, Nov. 23. Set and shot on location in Africa, Bauer and mentor CARL BENTON (Robert Carlyle) battle an international crisis, while here at home the nation prepares for a new president on inauguration day. Taking place just a few months before the new day dawns, U.S. State Department officer FRANK TRAMELL (Gil Bellows) and JONAS HODGES (Jon Voight) are pulling the strings that will set the stage and raise the stakes for Season Seven.

Set in Washington, DC, “Day 7” opens four years after Season Six with CTU dismantled and Bauer on trial. Bauer’s day takes an unexpected turn when former colleague TONY ALMEIDA (Carlos Bernard) returns. Meanwhile, newly elected President ALLISON TAYLOR (Cherry Jones) leads the country alongside White House Chief of Staff ETHAN KANIN (Bob Gunton) and First Gentleman HENRY TAYLOR (Colm Feore).

A national security crisis prompts an investigation by a team of FBI agents including JANIS GOLD (Janeane Garofalo), RENEE WALKER (Annie Wersching), LARRY MOSS (Jeffrey Nordling) and SEAN HILLINGER (Rhys Coiro). Although CTU is no longer, CHLOE O’BRIAN (Mary Lynn Rajskub) and BILL BUCHANAN (James Morrison) are back for another momentous day of shocking events.

Don't hate me because I just got to see part of the 24 prequel. (Okay, you can hate me a smidge.) Hate the powers that be because the wretched thing is tragic. Tragic because when you see the footage that came out of Africa (Jack running around in what looks like a bonafide movie, kicking rebel booty and saving African children), you'll wish it were an entire season, and apparently this thing is only two piddly little hours. Hmph.

Luckily, a full season of, you guesssed it, 24 episodes of 24 will follow the two-hour prequel "event," and Kiefer Sutherland and Co. were on hand at Fox's Press Tour spilling some scoop...

There "Probably" Will Be a 24 Movie. "I think we’re going to probably do the film when we stop doing the series and that, I don’t know when it’s going to be," says Kiefer. "I’ve loved making this show and I’ve always said that the audience ultimately will dictate and tell you when it’s time to stop." Sweet. 2050 works for me. Thanks for asking, Kief!

Carlos Bernard Is Not the Six-Million Dollar Man. Regarding the seemingly miraculous upcoming resurrection of Tony Almeda (Carlos Bernard), exec producer Jon Cassar teases, "You will totally believe that he was alive when you see the unbelievably great explanation of what happened with Tony Almeida. And no, he's not a bionic man." I know. Did it turn out that wasn't really his head in the box? Oh wait, wrong show.

Location, Location, Location: The prequel is set in Africa (a fictional country called Sengela), but the new season is set in Washington D.C. Executive producer Howard Gordon says moving out of LA adds intensity: "There is a reason why thrillers tend to be set in Washington D.C., because what’s at stake is represented iconically in Washington. The power and intuitions that have been threatened are there."

Two Heads of State Better Than One? Says Cassar, "Cherry Jones plays our new female president. What you get in the prequel—which is also very interesting and I've never seen it before—is one president saying goodbye and the other president starting. Basically the prequel takes place on the inauguration day in Washington, and at the same time, in real time, [Jack is] in Africa."

Jon Voight Must Be Killed Off (According to John Voight): Jon Voight as Jonas Hodges is all over the prequel movie, will also be on the series for the larger part of the season and is is "involved in a Blackwater-type organization," according to Cassar. Says Voight: "Obviously this guy is a villain and he’s a very serious villain. This is a very bad fellow." So will he die a very bad death? "I deserve to," says Voight with a laugh. "Whether justice will prevail or not, we will see."

Final Fun Fact: Gordon says that if you do all the math on what year it is in 24-land to incorporate all the presidential administrations, it's 2017. Jack Bauer must be rocking some good face cream, right?

With Mary Lynn Rajskub about to give birth in real life any day, 24 fans are wondering who'll replace Chloe as Jack's go-to geek. Well, they can stop wondering: Sources confirm to me exclusively that she'll be relieved by none other than the perpetually pouty computer whiz's ex, Morris O'Brian.

Though the slippery hacker won't make his comeback in fall's two-hour teaser "prequel," portrayer Carlo Rota has just signed on to appear in a handful of episodes, starting around the midday point after January's official premiere. How will the changeover take place?

Spoiler alert -- don't say I didn't warn you!

I hear that an emergency involving Chloe's now-4-year-old spawn causes her to take off for a few hours (i.e. episodes), prompting her (possible) babydaddy to step in. All of which sounds OK to me, so long as Chloe's kid isn't being menaced by a cougar. Been there, done that, don't wanna go there again.

Gil Bellows spills minor 24 movie plot details

Gil Bellows has a lot to talk about -- and one thing he can't discuss -- over the phone from L.A., where he's in his Prius with two yowling cats, driving north to meet his wife and two children for a summer at their Gulf Islands second home.

The Vancouver-born actor has the new comedy The Promotion set to open in theatres on Friday and a Canadian epic opening the Toronto Film Festival this fall. As well, he just wrapped three weeks work in Africa on the hush-hush two-hour prequel to this season of TV's 24.

Word on the Internet about that story is that Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Bauer is in Africa doing volunteer work when a coup breaks out. Bellows can only say that he plays a U.S. official in the country and Trainspotting's Robert Carlyle is Bauer's old special forces pal.

"We shot in Cape Town and it was me and Kiefer and Bobby Carlyle and a bunch of African actors."

The movie, which airs in November, sets up the yet-to-be filmed seventh season, which will return to the show's real-time 24-hour format starting in January. Bellows adds that he'll "probably" come back for other episodes.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In his first series role in 40 years, Jon Voight has signed on as a recurring character on the upcoming seventh season of "24."

On the Emmy-winning Fox drama, Voight will play the uber-nemesis of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), who is pulling the strings behind next season's terrorist threat.

The character will be introduced during "24's" two-hour Season 7 prequel and will be featured heavily in the latter half of the season.

The prequel, now shooting on location in South Africa, is slated to air November 23, with Season 7 of the series kicking off in January.

Voight's role marks the first high-profile villain casting on "24" since Season 1, when Dennis Hopper appeared in the final episodes as Serbian nationalist Victor Drazen.

Voight did several TV guest spots early in his career -- including a three-episode stint on "Gunsmoke" in the late '60s -- until his movie career exploded with "Midnight Cowboy" in 1969.

A four-time Academy Award nominee, Voight won the best actor Oscar for 1978's "Coming Home." He recently reprised his role as Nicolas Cage's father in "National Treasure: Book of Secrets."

To fill you in, in case you haven't heard the hott news - about three weeks to a month ago the FOX network announced that there's going to be a prequel movie to the seventh season of 24.

The movie's a fan-filler prequel to make up for the way-too-long wait between Season 6 and 7 that's happened because of the writers strike at the beginning of the year.

The new season was originally supposed to premiere in January this year but it's been postposed until January 2009 so to make sure we get our 2008 fix FOX's making a two-hour movie that's being filmed right here in South Africa.

The movie premieres in the US on Sunday, 23 November and the buzz surrounding it's filming's begun in Cape Town, with a shoot that's happening here.

You may know the scene - it's the cool unfinished bridge over the Eastern Boulevard, just opposite the Waterfront - and I'm 99.9% convinced Kiefer Sutherland's going to be Jack Bauer'ing it.

I was downtown last Thursday and as I was travelling back I spotted the bridge and stopped to take a pic to tell you how I've always thought it would be a perfect place for a 24 scene - and under the bridge there was a crew setting up!

There weren't any actors or cameras but lots of filmic technical types doing things, including measuring the road - for a chase scene obviously. There were unmarked cars and vans and a huge red truck going backwards and forwards, traffic officers 'discreetly' keeping a lookout and tents with organisations going on.

The bridge often gets used for shoots but my thinking is - what are the chances that just as the movie's about to happen there's such setup happening? - the very day I happened to stop at it 'cos of thinking it would be ideal.

Also - the discreetness to it seemed suspicious and appropriate. Film crews can make a big scene about things - with signs and branded trucks etc - but everything surrounding the shoot's been very hush-hush - right down to the script being used in the castings for it.

A Cape Town actor-mole I know went to an audition for it about two weeks ago and according to him the script was so cryptic you couldn't work out what was going on context-wise - to protect the storyline.

From what he had to say it seems that they're casting South Africans mostly in walk-on roles, with a couple of more prominent ones - my guess is they'll get a South African actor to play a lead villain ...

...who'll thrillingly face Jack on the Bridge with Table Mountain as a backdrop.

I'm so convinced it's going to happen there I'll dangle from it if it doesn't! If you pass the bridge-area keep a lookout to see if you spot anything that looks suspiciously 24-ish and be sure to be undercover to find Jack generally.

The film's going to need loads of locations and most everywhere they go he should be there. Somewhere. Hiding before kicking butt.

Check your watches Ausholes, 'cause I'm pretty sure it's time for some 24 scoop!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Scottish thesp Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty) has been cast in Fox's upcoming 24 prequel movie as Benton, Jack's mentor in Africa.

As Fox announced this morning, the two-hour telepic, shot on location in South Africa, will air on Nov. 23 and bridge the gap between Day 6 and Day 7. Carlyle's role is not expected to spill over into the drama's seventh season, but, well, this being 24, nothing's set in stone.

Fun piece of casting, no?
