The ever loyal Jericho Rangers are continuing to mount fan campaigns to restore their beloved TV show. Just this week they spent $7,500 for a 30 day lease on a giant billboard on Ventura Blvd. in the heart of Studio City, CA. The billboard sporting a giant For Sale sign is aimed at other networks located directly in that vicinity, urging them to contact CBS Paramount about purchasing Jericho. Ironically it is a CBS billboard the Rangers leased. Much of the money for this billboard was funded by auctioning off Jericho items on eBay that the members of the Jericho Cast so graciously autographed for the occasion. The remaining money was made through donations by Jericho fans both in the US and internationally.

'JERICHO' FANS RAISE CASH, QUESTIONS ABOUT TV RATING SERVICES

Dubbed the 'Jericho Rangers' from the CBS Jericho forums, fans have rallied to keep the cameras rolling, enlisting Variety to further their grassroots cause by sending flower, peanuts and buying ads

THE SKINNY: Variety newsroom received 26 cases of peanuts from JERICHO fans as part of a campaign to save the show after two previous grassroots successes. Now with the CBS show back on the shelf, what's come into question are the show's ratings. The fans say Nielsen just isn't providing the full picture.

The peanuts packages all read "Save Jericho! Nuts to Nielsen!!!" as a reminder of the rating service's shortcomings to track viewing on just the old-fashioned live telecast. The avenues that also attract viewers are DVRs, web streaming and paid downloads -- which aren't taken into account. In this day and age, those numbers add up.

Certainly the peanuts did (500 pounds). And they didn't exactly show up there magically: The fans raised $11,000 of their own cash to send the message. Those funds paid for full-page ads in Variety and the Hollywood Reporter and were targeted at CBS Paramount Network TV executives in control of JERICHO'S future.

For now the only way to view JERICHO is on the CBS website where all 29 episodes from both seasons can be streamed.

Hats off to the fans for not taking it sitting down. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

JERICHO' PRODUCERS DAN SHOTZ and JON STEINBERG TALK ABOUT THE END AND PERHAPS A NEW BEGINNING

By now, everyone knows the story. CBS puts one of the best genre shows on television last year called JERICHO. Fans love it, it gets cancelled, fans convince CBS to bring it back for a 7-episode Season Two, where it’s, well, cancelled again.

It’s frustrating to watch such a great series walk off into the sunset, without getting the final word from its creative team and creator/producer Jon Steinberg and Co-Executive producer Dan Shotz spoke with iF this week about the end, the beginning and when we might actually see that alternate JERICHO Season Two ending.

iF MAGAZINE: While I loved the enormity of the seven-episode season, it felt at times like things were going by way too fast. The last episode in particular, it felt like the time lines of Jake and Hawkins were moving at three times the speed as the same events in Jericho. I’m curious, from the writing perspective, were the scripts for the seven episodes too long, and then pared back to the core essentials? And what other concessions had to be made to accelerate the time lines of all the different stories?

JON STEINBERG: I don’t really think the writing process or the scripts were significantly different than they were in Season One. There were some practical issues that changed -- i.e., there were generally fewer scenes written for Season Two than for Season One. By the time the editing process was finished, most of those differences became pretty much meaningless. Our goal was to make sure that the budgetary and schedule limitations didn’t affect the quality of the storytelling, so hopefully we were reasonably successful in that regard.

iF: That said, were the episodes that were filmed longer than normal, because of all the material you had to get on screen? Will the DVD have tons of deleted scenes, or was shooting pretty lean and mean?

STEINBERG: The DVD’s will definitely have a bunch of deleted scenes included. And yes, we couldn’t really afford time-wise to shoot anything this season that wasn’t important and/or cool. So while those scenes might not have been absolutely indispensable in terms of telling the story they were a part of, they should definitely be interesting to watch after the fact.

Carol Barbee Interview

Might the folks of Jericho have some fight left in them after all? Not long after CBS announced its decision not to renew the drama for a third season (and thus air a series finale Tuesday night), I spoke with executive producer Carol Barbee about the sad news, the show's "amazing" fans, and this week's "emotionally satisfying" conclusion.

TVGuide.com: I'm sorry to hear about the show. We were big fans of it here.
Carol Barbee: You guys were great. I really appreciate it.

TVGuide.com: When did you get word about CBS' decision?
Barbee: Friday. I knew that they had an internal meeting on Thursday, to decide which of the endings we were going to show. At that time they gave us permission to speak to the cast, because we had requested to have 24 hours to speak to them, which I did on the phone, before it went out to the general public.

TVGuide.com: The response on our news blog was astounding, and I've seen two common refrains from the readers. Some are saying that the fans didn’t fulfill their end of the bargain, that they didn’t recruit new viewers. I think that's a bit unfair.
Barbee: I think our fans have been amazing. Our fans are not professional marketers! They are people with lives who gave so much of their time and energy and money to keep us on the air. They did more than enough, more than their share. We could not be more grateful to them. There's a limit to what a fan base can do when you're trying to reverse a slide in ratings.

TVGuide.com: Another refrain is that CBS perhaps isn’t placing enough value on online and live-plus-7 viewing.
Barbee: I can tell you that they definitely were tracking the numbers [differently] this time, in a way that they didn’t our first season. But ultimately, even though we added a couple million viewers when you added those numbers in, it looks to me like we're not in a network world where those numbers make dollars sense. The legacy of Jericho first of all will be the NUTS campaign and this amazing fan revolt, but also that we are not at a moment in time where the networks realize they have to start counting people [who watch] on the Internet and [on DVR]. It wasn’t in time to save us, but it will reverberate from here out.

TVGuide.com: Were you upset with the Tuesday, 10 o'clock time slot?
Barbee: It's so funny — Tuesday at 10 used to be the greatest thing ever because I ran Judging Amy, and it did great [in that slot]. But it's a tough time slot, and anything during the months American Idol is on has a tough row to hoe. When you're being thoroughly entertained by plucky musicians, it's hard to change that channel. I don’t think that means people aren't finding their way to scripted drama, they're just finding them on different platforms, so the numbers have gotten smaller. Hopefully those numbers will start being counted.

TVGuide.com: Skeet [Ulrich] told me fans will be "not too happy" with the alternate ending.
Barbee: I heard him say that. I think what [he meant] that if they show the alternate version, viewers will be upset because they know it's the end. But the actual alternate ending is very emotionally satisfying. It's very well done. We weren’t going to make something that wasn't worth ending our series with. The ending they're going to see is great. Depending on what happens with the show — we're still shopping it, talking to people about a possible other life — the original ending will probably be on the DVD.

TVGuide.com: Let's talk about that "possible other life." What are the chances of that happening, of a cable network picking up Jericho? And why it isn’t as easy as the fans would believe. A lot of fans are saying, "A cable network would kill for six million viewers."
Barbee: I wish I knew…. I really don’t know what [the cable networks'] business models are. We get compared a lot to Friday Night Lights, but Friday Night Lights shoots in Texas and their budget is much lower than ours. Even with the restrictions that were put on us for this second season, we cut it pretty much to the bone. We might be able to get [the budget] a little lower, depending on where we are shooting…. I would imagine, though, that people would be thrilled to get our audience! We had eight million for our premiere, and even if we retained three or four million for a cable station, that'd be a good audience. I'm hoping these talks work out, but you never know.

Jericho Cancelled

I've just been speak to my source at CBS about this article from Hollywood Reporter and he says that the non-cliffhanger ending will be shown and Jericho will not be renewed.

-- "Jericho." CBS must make this decision quickly since only two episodes remain in Season 2 and the network has to choose Ending A or Ending B. Two conclusions to the season have been shot. One puts a narrative lid on the series (lest protesting fans pelt CBS executives with thousands of pounds of nuts again), the other more of a cliffhanger. CBS notes that the show gains from DVR viewership and online viewing, but after its performance the past two weeks, most doubt the citizens of "Jericho" will live to fight another season.

Anyone whose been watching JERICHO during its second season, knows what a firecracker it's been in terms of tight, taut storytelling. With only seven episodes to complete a major arc (and season) in the beloved series that was saved from cancellation last season by eager fans sending nuts to CBS, the show hasn’t faltered with filler episodes or strange detours. This is a mini-movie told in seven hours and it’s working like a charm.

After a nuclear bomb hit on American soil in Season One, with the town of Jericho, Kansas surviving the fall-out, Season Two has focused on order being restored to the United States in the form of a shifty new government called Cheyenne whose agendas seem to be manipulated by the evil corporation Jennings and Rall.

Of course, one of Jericho’s newer residents, Robert Hawkins (Lennie James) harbors a secret that will blow the lid on what really happened – it was the U.S. government, not foreign terrorists that set off the nuclear attack and he has one of the last bombs (that haven't gone off) to prove it.

With the help of Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich), who is now the town’s sheriff, he’s been using his new position to work with the military to restore order in town (while also undermining them) in an attempt to help Hawkins reveal the truth to the general populace.

Creator and producer Jonathan Steinberg and co-executive producer Dan Shotz took time out from their schedule this week to discuss the remaining three episodes of JERICHO, the show's eerie resemblance to current politics and also a tease of what to expect if Season Three is given the greenlight.

iF MAGAZINE: For some strange reason, JERICHO seems to be filling the 24 void for me with all the sneaking around, unsure of who to trust, conspiracy theories and taut action in each episode. Was that intentional, or just the natural progression of the story with only seven episodes?

JON STEINBERG (Co-Creator/Producer): I don’t think it was intentional that the tone of the show would be so thick with the conspiracy of it all this season. Ultimately we started telling a story in Season One, and we wanted to be true to that story and try to pay it off properly, and this is the direction it took us. Also, it was important to us not just to tell a conspiracy story for the sake of doing it. We wanted to tell a story that was about something, and it turns out in order to tell this particular story, the conspiracy elements of the story were the best way to do it.

That said, we’re now through four episodes of Season Two, and I think a lot of people think they know what the conspiracy is actually about, and they think they know who perpetrated the attacks, but I know for a fact that a lot of those people are going to be surprised by the end of this season.

iF: The tone is very, very different than the first season. How far did you think you could go, without alienating fans of the first season?

STEINBERG: It’s hard to say, in that I don’t think we have “one” audience. I think people watch this show for a lot of different reasons. Some prefer the personal family stories. Some prefer the action. Some prefer the sci-fi elements. After how hard our fans worked to bring us back, I think we definitely wanted to make sure that this season was something they’d enjoy, but I think we also felt like the best way to do that was just to tell the smartest, fastest, most fun story we were capable of, and hope for the best from there.

DAN SHOTZ (Co-Executive Producer): We had to arc out an entire season in seven episodes and we wanted it to feel like a complete season. Because of that, we had to move fast and focus on very specific stories. I don’t know if that necessarily changed the tone of the show, but I do know that it raised the stakes for the town. The show is not just about a town in peril anymore, it’s about an entire country fractured at its core. And our little town plays a major role in that new landscape.

iF: Seven episodes – that’s a pretty strange number for a pick-up order.

STEINBERG: This show from the very beginning has always been something that doesn’t quite fit what everybody expected a TV show to be. The way the first season played out, nobody knew quite what to make of it. When CBS had to make that decision, there wasn’t much they could look to.

iF: What should we expect in the last three episodes of the season?

STEINBERG: In the same way that the end of Season One blossomed the show into a bigger and I think more interesting world, I think the end of Season Two does the same thing. You’ll begin to see pieces of this story’s universe that had only been mentioned in passing before. And you’ll see some world-class ass-kicking -- especially by Lennie.

SHOTZ: Complete Awesomeness. Oh, and some nice character moments too. Bonnie’s death has affected everyone in very different ways. A revolt will take place in ways you wouldn’t expect.

iF: Any more deaths on the horizon?

STEINBERG: No comment.

SHOTZ: Hmmmmmm… gotta go now.

iF: I love how Esai Morales comes into the show and he feels like he’s always been there. Will Major Beck play an even bigger role by the end of the season. If the series continues, will he be a bigger part of Season Three?

STEINBERG: Even before we’d figured out what to name him, we had a pretty good sense that Beck was going to be a really important character in this world. Not just because of the vacuum left open by Johnston’s death, but because of the government he represents; because of the tension of being a soldier in this really difficult situation; and, frankly, because we wanted to inject a little new life into the show. Beck plays a huge rule towards the end of this season, and I think you’ll see by the end of Episode Seven how significant he’d be in an eventual Season Three.

SHOTZ: Esai is a fantastic actor and we were very lucky to get him to join the cast. He brings so much to the role. In life, Esai is a real sweetheart, very different than his role and to watch him transform into the Major is a true work of art. Also, Jon named the Major’s character after his wife Bec, so I think that says it all. He’ll be back.

iF: In Season One, the idea of a nuclear attack seemed like a the set-up for TV show (an excellent one at that), but it’s something that you could never imagine happening on such a grand scale. The irony is, the politics of Season Two, with the creation of a new government and all the under-handedness that comes with it, seems completely in the present. It feels almost too real and with all the strange things happening in the current presidential election, JERICHO seems more prescient than ever.

STEINBERG: I think a lot of really good science fiction, in the broadest sense of that term, comes from taking the world we live in, and changing just one rule that we all take for granted. It’s the basis for just about every TWILIGHT ZONE episode I’ve ever seen. In our show, the one assumption we changed was that we live in a safe and stable republic that is constant and will be around forever. Because that assumption is grounded in some pretty firm realities, it takes a monstrously large event to upset it. Which is where the bombs came in. But after that event, the story that follows should play out according to the rules of the real world that we all live in. It’s what makes the “what-if?” scenario not just fun, but relevant.

iF: Knowing that the presidential race would be heating up when JERICHO was airing, did you try to draw a correlation to it, without knowing exactly what would be happening in the presidential race by the time the show aired?

STEINBERG: Actually, of all the things we tried to draw on in building the Season Two mythology, the presidential race wasn’t really much of a factor. It was bizarre for us, though, watching episode four together on the night of the Ohio and Texas primaries, given how significant those two states are in our mythology. Very strange, but total coincidence.

SHOTZ: I was just upset that they didn’t air Episode Four in Texas and Ohio on the night of the primary. I mean, come on, those are two crucial states in the JERICHO universe. They need to see it.

iF: I find it ironic, that Wyoming (particularly Cheyenne) became such a big piece of the Democratic nominee battleground in the news this past week – come on, who has the crystal ball?

STEINBERG: Our writers’ assistant Robbie Thompson was a Fortune Telling major in college, it definitely helps to have someone around who knows how to work the magic 8-ball properly.

iF: It must have been difficult to craft these seven episodes, knowing some characters and storylines would be taking a back seat. Emily (Ashley Scott) and to some extent Jake, have become more supporting players to the bigger issues of Hawkins with the bomb, Major Beck’s loyalties and Goetz’s insane power plays under the guise of Jennings and Rall. Was it hard to see them take a back seat? I know Jake gets to be Sheriff and all, but he’s really putting out fires, while Hawkins is making things happen.

STEINBERG: It’s always hard to have actors you love, to have to take a step back for the sake of the story. A lot of that is fallout from the shortened season, and from the fact that we had to break the season long arc for Season Two in about 3 days. So all we really had time to do was to pick the best story we could think of, and then figure out how to tell it from there. Fortunately, we have such a cool and professional cast; everyone did what we asked of them and did it amazingly.

SHOTZ: This show has an amazing ensemble cast where everyone shares a piece of the action. In response to Jake, as Sheriff -- our renegade hero from the first season now has a formal leadership role in town. The death of Bonnie changes all of that for him. He has tried to play both sides for the first few episodes. Not anymore.

iF: The company Jennings and Rall have now officially become one of the most chillingly disturbing non-human villains in series television -- I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cigarette Smoking Man was their chairman. How much do you have mapped out for Jennings and Rall on the series, beyond Season Two? Outside of ANGEL and the law firm of Wolfram and Hart, I’ve never seen a TV series, that successfully take a faceless corporation and work so much evil into its foundation.

STEINBERG: Thank you! Very humbling to pick up an X-FILES comparison, however small it may be. I love that show.

There’s a lot to Jennings & Rall that we didn’t get a chance to get into in the short Season Two, so there’s still a lot left for them. We also never really thought, or think of them as uniformly evil. That was why Trish’s character was so important to us, to show that a giant company you presume to be evil is probably almost entirely made up of people just trying to live their lives and do their jobs. Even among the guys making the decisions at the top; no one’s twisting their moustaches and eating puppies. Human nature is a lot more complicated -- and interesting, I think -- than that.

iF: Loved Commando Bonnie. Is she really dead? And if so, is Stanley going to go commando on Jennings and Rall in the last three episodes?

STEINBERG: Bonnie looked pretty dead to me at the end of Episode Four, so I think it’s safe to say she’s very dead. Regarding Stanley, no comment.

SHOTZ: Bonnie is alive -- in spirit. Bonnie’s death was the hardest decision we, as writers, had to make for this series. While it hurts just to think about it, we needed to do it for the final three episodes of the season. They will speak for themselves.

iF: As much as I liked the fact that CBS sent out three episodes in advance, you also had someone posting those screeners online before the episodes aired, which I think cut into the second and third week ratings. Do you think that was one of the reasons for the second week drop off?

SHOTZ: No, I don’t think so. While we weren’t happy that those episodes were leaked, I think very few people actually go to those illegal sites and download them. I might be wrong, but our numbers on the internet have been consistently high each episode. We have been number 1 on iTunes every week. People are still watching in various ways. TV is changing and JERICHO is at the center of that movement.

iF: As much as I would have liked a full season of JERICHO, there’s something immediate and enjoyable about such an abbreviated story arc. As writers, did you find it a difficult challenge or was it something that was liberating since you could cut directly to the chase?

STEINBERG: It was nice having the short run so that every episode could be moving story forward in a meaningful way. Frankly, given the hours we worked last summer, I’m not sure Dan or I would have survived any more than seven episodes.

SHOTZ: While it was a short season, it didn’t feel like it. We had less money and time to make these enormous episodes. We also felt a sense of responsibility to the fans to give them a great season, an ever better season than last year. Since they fought so hard for this show, our wives were forced to understand that they wouldn’t see us for five months.

iF: Will the virus play a big part in the last three episodes? Does it arrive in Jericho, even though they’ve been vaccinated?

SHOTZ: The virus does not arrive in Jericho, but it is still thriving in the East.

iF: Originally there were other arcs planned for Season Two, but now you’re only focusing on one of them, are you saving some of the other one’s?

STEINBERG: A lot of the stuff, from the story, from the world, came from the original idea. We’ve had a ten-page Bible for a long time, and we’ve only gotten through two pages of, so most of the stuff we already know. The big three-location thing is going to get modified, a lot of it is going to be put on a shelf and we hope to able to tell that story in Season Three, but the guts of the story was always about the government. The first season about the absence of government and the absence of law, and the second season is about a new government and a new law. The trunk of it is going to stay the same, it’s how it’s presented that’s changed.

iF: Has the network been happy with the ratings?

STEINBERG: Dunno. You’d have to ask them. I think we’d all like for the numbers to be higher, but that’s a little above my pay grade.

SHOTZ: They are very happy with how we are performing on all the various platform -- DVR, iTunes, CBS.com, etc. I think they would still like more eyeballs to the TV.

iF: Did the writer’s strike help or hinder JERICHO’s chances for survival?

STEINBERG: Hard to say. TV was already changing pretty radically before the strike, network TV especially. I’m sure the strike affected us, but there are so many variables, it’s probably impossible to know for sure whether it was for the worse or the better.

iF: CBS has been promoting JERICHO as the last three episodes of the “season.” Of course, here comes the million dollar question: will you becoming back for Season Three?

STEINBERG: Hang on, let me go get Robbie and the Magic 8-ball …

SHOTZ: We would love to come back, especially since we have so much more story to tell, but it’s all up to the CBS gods.

iF: Will the last episode this year be a series ender or a season ender?

STEINBERG: Yeah, we’re going to leave a cliffhanger.

SHOTZ: You will feel like you’ve been told a full story, but you won’t feel like you’ve been told the whole story.

iF: Regardless of renewal or not, what would the broad strokes of Season Three be about? Will it be an abbreviated season again, or would you get a full season pick-up?

STEINBERG: I can’t really say without giving away a lot about episodes six and seven, but suffice it to say, by the end of this season, it should be pretty clear what direction the story is headed in.

SHOTZ: Broad strokes of a possible Season Three? Complete Awesomeness!

"Jericho" and "Big Brother" Viewer Engagement Across Multi-Platforms Is Far Greater Than Initial Same Day Ratings Indicate

On-air, online and on-DVR viewing are resulting in many more eyeballs for CBS series JERICHO and BIG BROTHER, according to Nielsen Live Plus 7-Day ratings and new data from CBS Interactive Research.

JERICHO:

According to Nielsen Live Plus 7-Day ratings, JERICHO's second season premiere (Feb. 12) ratings increased by +15% in adults 18-49 (3.0/07 from 2.6/07), +17% in adults 25-54 (3.5/08 from 3.0/07) and by more than one million viewers (8.14m from 7.13m, +14%) compared to its live plus same day ratings.

According to CBS Interactive Research, the second season premiere episode of JERICHO was streamed 520,000 times across the CBS Audience Network during its first week (Feb. 12-18) and 700,000 times over a 14-day period (Feb. 12-25).

JERICHO's other online engagement during its second season premiere week included 760,000 streams of episodes from its first season and 130,000 streams of various clips, upping JERICHO's first week cumulative streams to 1.41 million.

Additional online engagement for JERICHO that week included five times the volume of JERICHO searches vs. the prior four weeks, seven times the daily traffic to JERICHO message boards (compared to mid-January traffic) and three times the average daily blog posts.

Jericho's Time Is Near

Carol Barbee, executive producer of CBS' post-apocalyptic drama Jericho, told SCI FI Wire that this week is make-or-break time for the resurrected show--though she will try to find a new home for it if CBS goes ahead and cancels it after its current seven-episode second season runs its course.

"I think this next airing will probably tell the tale," Barbee said in an interview at WonderCon in San Francisco on Feb. 24, referring to the upcoming Feb. 26 episode, "Jennings & Rall." "Our numbers have been OK, [but] not great. Our [demographic] has been very good; they've been very happy with that. But we'll see. ... If we trend up this week, I think we'll look pretty good. If we don't trend up, or if we stay the same, I think we'll have to wait and see what they want to do with us. I mean, they're going to air all seven; it's just a matter of how they feel about producing more."

Barbee denied that CBS has told her the show is ending, notwithstanding speculation that the network has already designated the seventh episode the "series finale." (Just to be sure, of course, Barbee said producers have prepared two endings: one to wrap the series up and one with a bit of a cliffhanger that would propel the narrative into a third season.)

Just in case CBS does pull the trigger on Jericho, Barbee said she's already begun looking for a new home on cable television. "There were other people who were interested in us to begin with, and now, I think, with the whole nuts [fan] campaign, and also with the amazing reviews that we've gotten for these seven episodes, I feel like we have made this franchise more valuable to a cable network who would want to take us on as a niche market," Barbee said. (The "nuts campaign" was a successful lobbying effort by Jericho fans, who mailed tons of peanuts to persuade CBS to bring the show back after the network canceled it after the first season.)

"So I think it's very possible," Barbee added. "We obviously have a relationship now with SCI FI Channel, because they're running our previous episodes. So I think that's a natural place to start looking. But I think that ... there are other people who would be interested in the show if it doesn't continue on CBS." (SCI FI Channel hasn't said whether it would consider picking up Jericho or not at this point.)
