The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2022 - Round 1E

We’re into the final polls of round one! Legends of Tomorrow makes its fifth appearance, though it hasn’t won in the last two attempts. Better Call Saul’s only previous entry came in 2020 where it suffered a first-round exit.

The Boys’ first appearance came with nominations just a week after its first season dropped. A second-round exit that year for the Amazon Prime show, and it returns today against a former runner-up. The Vampire Diaries went away with silver in the inaugural year of the competition, and was fourth in 2011 - since then, it’s reached the second round only once in seven entries.

Warrior Nun lost on debut in 2020, and is up against a 2022 debutant in Fire Country. One of them has to get their first win.

Psych has earned both a silver (2017) and bronze (2019) medal, with a 10th place finish sandwiched in between. This is the show’s first appearance since that bronze, so it could be an interesting watch. Especially because it faces a former champion in Wynonna Earp, which itself has had a curious run. In four appearances, it’s escaped the first round only once. Very much all or nothing.

This Is Us broke its duck at the third time of asking last year, though it didn’t get past the second round. For All Mankind makes its debut against the NBC series today.

And we end the first round with 9-1-1: Lone Star, a first-round faller on debut last year, against Big Sky in its maiden appearance.

Psych 3: This Is Gus is streaming November 18th on Peacock:

Synopsis: In preparation for a shotgun wedding before the birth of Baby Guster, Shawn and Groomzilla Gus go rogue in an attempt to track down Selene’s estranged husband, as Lassiter grapples with the future of his career.

It appears that a new Psych movie is definitely on. Fans may have caught James Roday cryptic pineapple tweet (below) last week hinting that another outing could be on the cards, and we can now confirm that filming will commence on the third Psych film in early June 2021.

Production Weekly states that this third film will be called This is Gus, and is written by Steve Franks, James Roday and Andy Berman, with Franks directing. Regulars James Roday, Dulé Hill, Timothy Omundson, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson and Corbin Bernsen are also all due to star.

2021 Character Cup - Nominating Polls

Nominations are now closed and it's time to finalize our bracket. Today is all about the nominating and ranking polls. With over 1000 valid character nominations, which represented almost 600 characters, there is a lot of variety in the nominees, which should make for a great contest. Before we get started though, we need to take care of some business. First off, two characters from Supergirl tied to get into the Cup. Since only one can represent the show, Supergirl fans need to choose which character they want to represent them. Then, we need to determine the final characters to get into this year's Cup with the nominating poll. We also have ties in some crucial positions so anyone in the top half who got the same number of nominations will have ranking polls. Any other tying characters will be ranked randomly to reduce the sheer amount of characters in polls we would have. Polls will stay open until around 7 pm CST on July 2. Questions? IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1. If you don't see your favorite characters, that does NOT necessarily mean that they didn't make it in. Many characters are already set and don't need a poll. Throwback Thursday - Psych - An Evening With Mr. Yang

Everything I am today is thanks to “Psych.”

Well, a lot of me, anyway. Most certainly the part that loves TV to near obsession (and would never hesistate to write for hours about that love). “Psych” was the inception of that obsession; my gateway drug into the world of television fandom at-large.

For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of getting to know Psych already, it is a police procedural comedy that aired on USA Network from 2007-2014. It follows mentalist and perpetual slacker Shawn Spencer (A Million Little Things’ James Roday Rodriguez*), who drags his reluctant, button-up best friend Gus (The West Wing’s Dulé Hill) from crime scene to crime scene after he using his photographic memory to trick the Santa Barbara police department into hiring him as a psychic detective.

The crowning glory of “Psych’s” 8-year run is the Yin/Yang episode trilogy - An Evening With Mr. Yang, Mr. Yin Presents, and Yang 3 in 2D - which served as the season finales of the third, fourth and fifth seasons, respectively. Each episode features Shawn going up against a killer who has chosen him to be a piece in their games, taunting him by laying out complex puzzles and riddles for him to decipher.

This article is for the first of the three Yin/Yang outings, An Evening With Mr. Yang, which aired as the 16th episode of “Psych” season 3 in 2009. Directed by Mel Damski and written by Andy Berman and series star Roday Rodriguez, this episode represents the absolute best “Psych” has to offer, with the series’ signature ridiculous slapstick swirled perfectly into an enticing, unsettling mystery.

The episode opens with Shawn and Gus out for lunch at the pier - and Shawn shamelessly flirting with their waitress, ordering breakfast food with a side of fish for lunch in an attempt to be "spontaneous." When Gus points out that Shawn’s flirting routine is a bit played out, Shawn decides to take a real risk and calls Abigail, his old high school flame, setting up a date with her that night.

Meanwhile, at the police station, a package arrives with a mysterious Yin/Yang symbol on the back. The notorious serial killer Mr. Yang has resurfaced for the first time in years, something he only does when “he feels he has a worthy challenger.” Yang’s MO involves kidnapping his victim and then sending the police on a wild goose chase of sorts to try to save them, with clues and traps designed specifically for his opponent. And this time around, he’s chosen Shawn, as shown by the note left with his first clue; “P.S. Bring your psychic along.”

When Henry finds out that his son is Yang’s new target, he comes down to the police station to try and convince him not to play the game. He admitted that when he was on the force, he watched the kind of internal chaos Yang caused for the officers he faced, and that he doesn’t want the same to happen to Shawn. However, Shawn barely heeds his father’s warning, telling Henry that Yang may be good, but they’ve never gone up against him before.

Shawn quickly cracks Yang’s first riddle, labeled a “gimme” by the SBPD’s neurotic consulting Yang expert, Mary Lightly (played by Jimmi Simpson, famous for his role in, among other things, David Fincher's "Zodiac," from which this episodes takes inspiration). The solve leads Shawn, Gus, Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) to the same cafe where Shawn and Gus had just had lunch, where they find that the waitress Shawn had been flirting with had gone on break and not come back. Rushing back to the staff area of the restaurant, they find that the waitress’s locker has a Yin/Yang symbol painted on it, and a ticking stopwatch hangs from the inside - another one of Yang’s signature moves, according to Mary (who, on the topic of his name, nonchalantly claimed that “his father was named Mary, and his father before him was named Mary, and his father before him was named Craig”).

After bombing on the delivery of a few breakfast-for-lunch quips (it doesn’t help when your audience is in the middle of a kidnapping situation), Shawn pulls Gus aside, admitting that he knows that it’s not a great time for jokes, but relieving the tension with humor is the only way he can work. Gus then hesitantly agrees to play joker for a while, so that Shawn can focus on the case. (Best friend goals, anyone?)

From the restaurant, Juliet finds a clue hearkening them back to the police station, where Shawn is caught off guard to see that his mother is there waiting for him. Madeline explains that she was in town for a conference when Henry called her to tell her about Shawn and Yang, and that she’s there to try to talk Shawn down as well. However Madeline sees that Shawn truly believes that he can catch Yang, and so she eventually steps aside, saying; “Go get him, Goose.”

The next clue comes in the form of a package found in the SBPD conference room, opened to reveal a small cage with a rat inside it. “Meet my little buddy Ben. Pitter-patter is your hint. If you can’t remember when, just read the fine print.”

While Gus distracts everyone by doing a hilariously awkward Michael Jackson impression, Shawn deduces that the “fine print” must be indicating toward the newspaper inside the cage that the rat is walking on (“pitter-patter”). Scattered throughout the fine print on that paper are clues calling back to some of Shawn’s past cases; references to Mira Gaffney (from There’s Something About Mira), and Adam Hornstock (from Cloudy...Chance of Murder), and one that mentions a “Snarky Psychic in search of a ferroequinologist.”

As pointed out by Gus, each of those ads mentions something having to do with train terminology (“A ferroequinologist is a train enthusiast.” “How do you know that?” “Because I am a ferroequinologist!”). After the subsequent segment of train-chasing from Shawn and Gus, in addition to a poorly-timed phone call from Abigail (worried that Shawn will stand her up as he pushes back the time of their date to work the case), Shawn and Gus find a clue indicating that the next step is to find a phone hidden somewhere on the pier. 8 rings, the riddle says, and the girl dies.

The detectives race to the pier - and as they reach it, a phone begins to ring. Shawn finds it just before the 6th ring, but he recognizes that the phone didn’t start ringing until exactly when they arrived. This, he deduces, means that Yang is watching them from somewhere, and must be close. Taking a calculated risk, Shawn waits until the eighth ring - and then holds up the phone, throwing it into the water for Yang to see. Cue goosebumps.

Just then, Shawn notices suspicious movement coming from the Psych office. By the time they reach it, Yang is gone, but in his wake he has left Shawn another clue, admonishing him for not playing the game but giving him another chance to save the waitress. Lassiter and Juliet make to regroup and continue with the chase, but Shawn is ready to throw in the towel. He tells Lassie and Juliet that he quits the case and to go on without him - or, at least that’s what he wants them to think.

Instead of continuing to follow the clues and follow the path Yang set, Shawn decides that the better move would be to investigate in secret and try to determine where the girl was being held through good old-fashioned detective work. After returning once again to the pier, Shawn realizes that the waitress’s car - a black Jeep, as she had mentioned to him earlier that day - wasn’t in the restaurant parking lot, meaning that Yang had taken her car.

At the same time, Lassie, Juliet and Mary return to the police station, where they soon receive an acknowledgement from Yang that Shawn had quit the game, along with another riddle, this time directed at Lassiter. The clue leads them to a hotel, where they find the one and only black Jeep outside, and decide to call Shawn and Gus back in. When the police enter the hotel room indicated by the clue, they find the waitress - tied and gagged but alive and well. However, as Shawn soon finds out, Yang’s game isn’t over yet.

In the waitress’s mouth, Lassiter finds another note from Yang: “Shawn no longer wants to play, stakes too low to make you stay?” At the same time, while investigating the hotel room, Shawn finds a purse that seems oddly familiar; it’s the same purse his mom was carrying when she visited him earlier in the day. A twisted confirmation of his fears comes as he turns and sees the hotel bathroom door, covered in things from Madeline’s purse (including a picture of a young Shawn) shaped into a Yin/Yang symbol. The stakes most certainly just got raised.

A clue written in lipstick on the bathroom mirror leads to a drive-in movie theater. In one of “Psych’s” most cinematic moments, Shawn recalls that Yang took the waitress’s own car, and while Lassie and Juliet go to check the projectionist’s box, everyone else spreads out to find Madeline’s rental car, with Shawn even hopping on top of cars to get a better vantage point. Shawn eventually finds his mother in one of the cars, and clocks that the red laser pointing at her seeming to indicate that a sniper was on her is actually a decoy. However, he also notes that the explosives nestled in the popcorn Madeline is carrying are very real.

Shawn asks his mother to show him where Yang is, and her eyes dart over to a woman smiling from a few cars over - and carrying a detonation switch. The woman (played by The Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy) indicates for Shawn to come join her, and he cautiously obeys.

“Be honest...I’m prettier than you thought I’d be. It’s the bone structure.” Yang says.

What Shawn fully expects to be a negotiation turns out to be much more of Yang’s elegy to her own work as she muses on the satisfaction that comes from a solid ending. She tells Shawn that she knew he was special, that it’s only the “end of the beginning” and that she wants them to work together again soon. “I’m gonna write a book! Our story. It’s gonna be epic, a best-seller. And guess what? I want you to write the foreword.” And then...she hands Shawn the remote detonator, telling him to “think about it...on your date tonight.”

With Madeline safe, Yang is taken away by the police, and the gang reflects on the insanity that has just unfolded. Mary confesses that he has no idea what to do with his life now that Yang has been captured, and Shawn, already back to his signature snark, suggests racquetball. Henry and Madeline share a tender moment, and Abigail shows up to the drive-in, where Shawn has cut a deal with the owner to have their date, despite it technically being an active crime scene.

However, one last twist is in store for Shawn - and it’s possibly the most conflicting one of all. As Shawn is in the theater lobby (with Abigail waiting outside), Juliet walks in, first telling Shawn how impressed she was by his intelligence and heroism, then stumbling into territory much more personal.

“Maybe...the best things - the richest things - aren’t supposed to come easily, and the moments that make the most sense happen when everything else doesn’t,” she says (in what is easily one of the most memorable quotes of the entire show), “And, well...I think you deserve more than popcorn tonight. So why don’t you let me take you to dinner?”

Cut to me screaming; internally, externally, eternally. There’s something about this scene - the way it’s so insanely in character for both Shawn and Juliet and yet it still catches you off-guard. It’s so tragically, wonderfully done; absolutely iconic. As a ride or die “Shules” fan, this scene tortures me in all its bittersweet glory.

In the roller-coaster ride of a will-they/won’t they that is Shules, Juliet has finally made her feelings known; but at the worst possible moment. Shawn politely rejects her, explaining that he’s already on a date with Abigail (“The one that got away,” Juliet concurs). She leaves and Shawn, more shell-shocked by Juliet's advances than by any serial killer, recovers himself just enough to finally go on his date - with Gus sitting in the backseat, of course. It’s a company car, after all.

The following episodes in the Yin/Yang trilogy expand both on Yang’s methodology, personal life, and connection to Shawn. Both are excellent episodes of TV, but none outshine this first installment. There are a lot of reasons why, but I think that chief among them is how well this episode balances laughs, plot twists, and everything in between.

“Psych,” in general, is a lot of things at once. A unique, hilarious comedy. A thrilling police procedural. At times, a heartwrenching drama. At its heart, though, it is a deeply character driven story, hauled on the backs of its cast, most especially Roday Rodriguez and Hill. It’s amazing the way that “Psych” knocks so brazenly at the fourth wall - playing with tropes and acting as both tribute and parody for many-a-classic film and TV show.

Because they shared a network, “Psych” is most often compared to critical darling “Monk,” but I feel like its blend of strong character with ridiculous, genre-bending humor makes it a much closer relative of “Community” (just... with murder!). So then, anyone who knows a bit about the struggles “Community” had with finding and keeping an audience, as well as maintaining its quality as the years went on, will understand then why it is so amazing that “Psych” ran a similar game, and kept it going strong for 8 years. For a show with so many moving parts, it truly takes a talented cast and crew to make “Psych” the light, fun, easy watch it is.

An Evening With Mr. Yang highlights the insane cocktail of tropes that make “Psych” everything that it is. A macabre murder mystery, met with just the right amount of inanity to keep it light, and on the side we get heavy doses of character growth, love triangles, and, of course, pineapple. Also notable is the top-notch acting work from leading men Roday Rodriguez and Hill, who we see temporararily swap their usual respective stooge and straightman roles, to much success.

“Psych” is a gem of a procedural, and one of the most underrated comedy greats of the 21st century, and An Evening With Mr. Yang is the perfect example of the show’s boundless potential. It is most certainly one of the most influential TV episodes in my own life, and I’d dare to say one of the most underrated TV episodes of the 21st century, to date. For too long, too many people have slept on this show or, worse; forgotten all about it. Well, consider this your long overdue reminder that “Psych” is criminally good; I know, you know...and everyone else should too.

*While he was credited as James Roday when this episode came out, Roday Rodriguez has since added his given last name onto his professional name.

In a vintage Psych-style Hitchcockian nod, Lassie begins to see impossible happenings around his recovery clinic. Shawn and Gus return to the Chief's side in Santa Barbara and are forced to navigate the personal, the professional, and possibly the supernatural. Separated from their new lives in San Francisco, our heroes find themselves unwelcome in their old stomping grounds as they secretly untangle a twisted case without the benefit of the police, their loved ones, or the quality sourdough bakeries of the Bay Area. What they uncover will change the course of their relationships forever.

Psych: The Movie 2, hailing from Universal Content Productions (UCP) in association with Thruline Entertainment, will be directed by series creator Steve Franks, and is co-written by Franks, Roday and Andy Berman. Franks, Chris Henze of Thruline, Roday, and Hill are set to executive produce. Production is set to begin this March in Vancouver, son!

The Monthly Binge - Reviews

Welcome back to the Monthly Binge, a column where I talk about the shows I’ve binged lately. Last month was a bit chaotic at work so binging TV has been my lifeline. I hope you’ve found some great TV to pass the time as well. If you would like your binge review to be featured next month, fill out the form at the end. A very special thanks to Ivan, Luana, and LauraLoo for being our guest reviewers this month! Just a reminder - there will be spoilers here and in the comments. Read at your own risk.

My May Binges:

Show: Sharp Objects
Episodes: 1.01 - 1.08
Type: New to me
Rating: 2+, but only because the last 3 episodes were so good

Summary: An alcoholic reporter is sent back to her small hometown to investigate the murder of two young girls.
Best Reason to Watch: The ending...by far. In fact, skip the first 5 episodes and just watch the last three. It’s a doozy of an ending that left me glued to the screen and completely engrossed. Second best reason to watch - the acting.
Best Character: Frank, by default, because the only 2 characters I didn’t want to slap were Frank and Eileen and Frank was on screen longer than Eileen.

Best Episode: Milk (1.08) is the best when it comes to pacing and overall answers. Quality-wise, it wins. However, my favorite episode is Falling (1.07) because it is here that everything falls in place for Camille. She finally gets it and that is an amazing thing to watch.

Worst Episode: Episodes 1.01 - 1.04 may be the most boring TV episodes I have ever seen. My notes for these 4 episodes basically funnel down to “unbearably slow.” If I had to choose just one though, it would be Fix (1.03), which felt like the show was moving in reverse and added an unnecessary subplot.

Most Likely to Sue for Defamation - small towns everywhere
Most Important - stay for the ending credits of the last episode. Seriously. The credits may be as long as a full-length action movie, but don’t fast forward them in the finale. You can, however, save 20 minutes of your life by fastforwarding through the other ones.

Best Quotes:
1. Jackie: “I mean it. You tackled those demons.” Camille: “My demons are not remotely tackled. They’re just mildly concussed.” Jackie: “Well, I’d say that’s better than the rest of us, isn’t it?”
2. Bob: “It was a man. I’d put money on it. The women around here, they don’t kill with their hands. They talk and you’re dead.”
3. Sheriff: “Well, I’m off to protect and serve.” Jackie, holding up her booze: “I’m off to mix and serve.”
4. Willis: “So let me guess. You were like a preacher’s daughter? Looks, money, and brains?” Camille: “Well, looks and money get you pretty far in this town.” Willis: “And brains?” Camille: “Well, that’ll get you out of this town.”
5. Adora: “We all have bad childhoods. At some point, you have to forget it, move on. Anything else is just selfish.”
6. Amma: “I know a girl like you. Not like you but…she says it doesn’t hurt because the cut’s already there under the skin. The knife just lets it out.” Camille: “Your friend sounds like an Afterschool Special.”
7. Willis: “Well, if you listen to all the talk around here, everyone’s some kind of crazy or evil.” Sheriff: “Only half of it’s true.” Willis: “That’s what I’m worried about. We’re looking at the wrong half.”

Overview:
This show was made for the Emmy’s. It was not made to entertain. The visuals are less than subtle, obsessively contrasting the innocent with the sordid and all the square symmetrical framing. If you remove the drawn-out, no dialogue, cinematic panning and the endless, 3-second flashbacks, this show would be about 120 minutes long instead of the 421 minutes it actually is. It’s a bloated piece of awards fare that would have been better as a 3-episode mini-series...but man, is that ending awesome! I rarely fear for a main character the way I did for Camille and that alone bumps the show up.

By the middle of episode 6, there’s actual movement on the mystery case and not just a portrait of how screwed up everyone in a small town can be. Then, in episode 7, Camille learns the truth. At that point, I couldn’t look away. It’s still very much an award-bait show, but it laser-focuses on the only part of the storyline I cared about and ratchets up the stakes and tension admirably. The middle of episode 7 to the middle of episode 8 was a wild ride and, while I did guess the main twists earlier, I had no idea if time would run out or not. The intensity of not knowing made it one of the better ends to a TV series for me and certainly one that will stick with me for a while.

Final Verdict: If plot and action matter to you, skip this show. Or better yet, skip the first 4-5 episodes. All you really need to know from them is that every single one of the characters has a dysfunctional life, they all make terrible choices, and they all have secrets.

Episodes: 1.01-1.05
Type: Under the radar
Rating: 4

Summary: Four people get sucked through a wormhole and end up on parallel worlds, each different from the next.
Best Reason to Watch: The alternate worlds make for a fun story with plenty of room to be creative. Some worlds work better than others but I enjoy the backstory to them all and how even a small change in history could turn a world upside down.
Best Character: In the 90’s, my favorite season 1 character was Quinn. Now it’s a toss up between Quinn and Arturo, depending on the episode. They balance each other out well.

Best Episode: Easy - of this batch of episodes, it is the Pilot, Part 2. The first part of the pilot does a good job of setting up the story but that means a lot of exposition that slows down the pace. It’s in the 2nd part of the 2-hour pilot that the action and the tension ratchet up. It also shows how much they can play with the concept. Details like the People’s Court were very clever and showing how the homeless guy was a Senator in a parallel world added depth to the world, even in small moments. The secondary characters were intriguing and I love that it is Wade who is the commander on the alternate Earth. I also think that of the first 5, this is the most tightly written with the least filler. Overall, this was my favorite world-building of the bunch.

Worst Episode: Summer of Love was a letdown to me, especially after the Russian and Asteroid worlds. It was much too scattered and the stakes felt a lot lower. Also, it’s the second time in a row that they split the characters up. In season 1, it tended to work better to have them all together. Plus, the 60’s just don’t do it for me.

The “I Owe You One” Award - I first got addicted to Sliders, but it also came on before another little sci-fi show called The X-Files. If it weren’t for Sliders and one of my middle school students, I may never have found my first sci-fi obsession. Thank you, Sliders, for introducing me to Mulder and Scully.

Best Quotes:
1. Wade to Quinn: “Hey, look at me. I have no regrets. Understand? Yeah, yeah, I miss my family and of course, I don’t want to die but I have done more and seen more since we started sliding than I ever imagined possible. I don’t know. Maybe I’m crazy but I really feel connected to all those other Wades out there. They’re all me. If I die here, at least I know they’re gonna go on.”
2. Arturo: “Mr. Bennish, if we survive, I promise you this. I will dedicate my life to isolating the gene that makes you so obnoxious and I will destroy it.”

Overview:
The first two seasons of Sliders remain one of my all-time favorite sci-fi TV shows. Sliders has a clever premise that allowed the writers to explore many different facets of history and life, yet didn’t have to adhere to all of the constructs that tend to sink time travel shows for me. In these 5 episodes, the show was still feeling its way with some earths working better than others. However it gave a glimpse of just how clever this show could be before it got stuck in “movie rip-off of the week” mode and then the morass that was the Kro-Maggs. When it was at its best, it reminded me of the sci-fi classic, The Twilight Zone, in that it could entertain as well as make you think. The ever-changing worlds let the characters face a wider range of issues, which led to making them more well-rounded and easier to relate to. It also tapped into the “what if’s” of history that I find fascinating. While my favorite episodes come later in the series, these were a pleasant walk down memory lane.

Final Verdict: If you don’t mind 90’s CGI and a few bumps in the road, I highly recommend the first 2.5 seasons of this show. I guarantee there will be some worlds that stick with you and made even a few you wish you found yourself. This show was also made for fan fiction if that’s your thing.

Summary: A group of misfits at Greendale Community College wind up in the same study group and meta hilarity ensues.
Best Reason to Watch: This is one of the few comedies that can have me doubled over, gasping for breath in laughter.
Best Character: Abed is one of my favorite comedy characters of all time. His Asperger’s Syndrome makes him the odd guy out, often not understanding the basics of human interaction. To connect, he speaks through film and TV, skewering the other characters and, more importantly, the tropes of comedy. He says what the audience is thinking and makes us laugh in the process.

Best Episode: Introduction to Film (1.03) - Since Abed is my favorite character, it’s no surprise that the first episode that focuses on him is my favorite in this set. However, it is also the first episode that really tugged at my heartstrings too. What starts off as just another disagreement between Britta and Jeff slowly turns into a silent plea from Abed for his father to understand him. Things between them have gotten worse since his mother left and Abed thinks his father blames him for that. After seeing his film, both father and son connect. It’s both funny and tender, and that is a winning combination for me.

Worst Episode: Pilot (1.01) - While I do like the pilot, it had some rough patches. First off, it focuses on 2 of my 3 least favorite characters in season 1 - Jeff and Britta. Also, both of them are at their most obnoxious. The whole thing boils down to Jeff trying to be too cool for Greendale and Britta trying to be morally superior to everyone.

I even like it you’re a little hard, but if you can’t learn to be soft in there, you need to pee alone.”
5. Jeff to Duncan: “You know, you have the savoir-faire of a hyena. How is it that you and James Bond come from the same island?”
6. Shirley: “They call me Tattle-ina. It’s a bumble bee nickname. It’s cute but it stings.”

Overview:
Like another one of my favorite comedies, Galavant, the magic of Community lies in its ability to poke fun of itself and not take itself too seriously. Whether it is in the form of Abed’s meta one-liners or something as absurd as a rickety desk fort, Community really makes me laugh. I literally spit water out on my keyboard in one scene of this rewatch. Yet, in almost every episode, there are moments that also tug at your heartstrings. These first few episodes do a good job of highlighting each of the main characters, giving you a solid idea of who they are and what motivates them. They are unique enough to stand out but they also harbor their own insecurities, making them relatable instead of stereotypes. I really like how season 1 mixes them up so that they all play off one another instead of only focusing on Jeff and Britta’s relationship.

Summary: Things in New Seattle get more intense as extremists on both sides - human and zombie - plan for genocide, while the US government debates on whether or not to just nuke the whole place.
Best Reason to Watch: Because it is the final season of a 5-season show and who doesn’t want to know how it ends?
Best Character: Major - giving Major a plot that does not revolve around Liv and gives him the chance to be both the voice of reason and a leader that takes action is doing wonders for his character. I haven’t liked him this much since the beginning.

Best Episode: Death Moves Pretty Fast (1.05) wins for one reason: Blaine finally gets his. I’ve been waiting for this for 4 seasons now. It’s about time someone calls Blaine out for being the murderous, vain, douche that he is. Not that Al is much fun, but she gets the job done. This is also the first time that I saw the Dead Enders as a credible threat. Generally, they are more eye rolling and obnoxious than dangerous, but messing with the brain tubes was clever.

Worst Episode: The Scratchmaker (1.06) - Personally, I found both 1.06 and 1.07 dull, but The Scratchmaker also brings back one of my least favorite characters, Stacey Boss. Ugh! Do we really need him again? I also was not a fan of the Blaine voice-overs or hearing about Blaine’s perspective at all. He’s a murderer. Case closed. Plus, the brain of the week didn’t come into play until halfway through the episode, robbing us of most of the comedy.

Overview:
You know when a show wants to get bigger and better for its final season and suddenly throws in a bunch of random subplots. That’s what these episodes feel like. Instead of sticking with its winning formula of great brain characters, these iZombie episodes went long on epic and short on fun. It makes the season feel cluttered and overcrowded, both introducing a bunch of new characters and bringing back old ones that should have stayed gone. We already have a nuclear threat, a human genocide plan, and a zombie extinction plan. Did we have to throw in Liv meeting her insane absentee father as well? He would have been just as superfluous as the Zombie Big Bad without Liv hemming and hawing over backstory, too. Major gets some good stuff to work with here, but Liv seems to be shunted off or stuck in an addict dad storyline that may work in the end but, for now, is tiresome.

Final Verdict: I look forward to finishing the series, but mostly in spite of these episodes.

Best Episode: Brand Barron (2.02), there's not much I could say without spoiling it, but Robyn is trying to stop hating herself and be better but she continues to struggle.
Worst Episode: Anthony (1.01), not bad by any means but with this first episode I just thought it would be a fun show to pass the time, and it's much more than that.
Overview: I love Anna Paquin and the idea of seeing her as a fixer had me sold immediately. I found it by chance (no idea why I didn't know about it sooner) and it turns out to be, not only addictively entertaining, but also a great character study on the messy trials of being a "functional" addict.

Best Episode: The Grave Danger Job (4.07), this episode to this day gives me chills! This episode is the reason I will forever wish everyone sees this show.
Worst Episode: The Scheherazade Job (3.04), this episode left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth because of the last scene.
Overview: Found family, these are the first words that come to mind when I think of this show. The relationship between a crew who'd never work together becoming family is one to marvel at and I can't recommend this show enough. There hasn't been one like it before. Sometimes bad guys make the best good guys.”

Episodes: 120 plus the movie.
Best Reason to Watch: The characters, without them the show wouldn't work.
Best Character: Shawn Spencer, his arc throughout the show is great. He never loses who he is but he definitely becomes more grounded.
Best Episode: Mr. Yin Presents... (4.16) This show, without question, is insanely funny, but this episode was one of the most serious ones. It was still the show we fell in love with, but the tone was very dire. It still gives me chills when I think about it.
Worst Episode: Right Turn or Left For Dead (7.08). One thing I could always count on with this show is feeling happy, and this episode was not that. This episode was very somber and depressing and for that, I never will love it.
Overview: This is one of the best shows, period. The bromance, the hijinks, the romance - it has everything. Shawn and Gus' bromance is the best bromance I have ever seen, barely any other has beaten it. Even the theme song is meta and no one can hate this, so it is well worth it to watch this gem of a show.

Best Reason to Watch: The characters, especially Chris. Oh my lord. He is EVERYTHING.
Best Character: Hands down it has to be Chris. He is just the sweetest, most precious human being. Unfortunately for me, Abby is also up there as she was immensely relatable despite all of her intense flaws. I also really like Campbell and King.
Best Episode - 3, 2, 1 (1.08). Despite the finale wrecking me in every way, it was masterfully done and it made me clamour for another season, so it did its job well.
Overview: The acting is absolutely flawless, the dialogue intense and intriguing, the representation palpable and mesmerizing. An extremely captivating thrill ride from beginning to end, I felt the entire range of emotions while watching. It's a simple premise but it works so incredibly well due to the unique presentation of its cast of characters and experiences they share. If you like dramedies like BoJack Horseman, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Looking, Please Like Me, One Day at a Time, or others like it, you will LOVE this one.

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2019 - Winner and Final Words

And so, another year of the Series Competition comes to an end. We've now had ten of these things and it continues to be an absolute blast of a competition. But forget that for a second — let's crown our winner...

Yes, that's right. Shadowhunters, in the competition this year as a finished show for the first time, triumphed over last year's winner Lucifer. It was, really, the final that most people had assumed would transpire once the draw was made, but I imagine far fewer would have expected the former Freeform series to win out in this clash. As it was, Shadowhunters was ahead for much of the 48 hours of the final, but in the repeat of the 2018 Character Cup, it came out on top this time.

Here's the full updated listing. We're now at 191 shows that have taken part in a decade! We will surely hit 200 next year. Of the list, 13 were debutants this time around — one more than last year. Click here to view the 1-64 rankings for this year's contenders.

Once again, another great competition. All of our winners prior to Lucifer had crashed out by the end of the third round, making this one of the most open competitions we've ever had. In the case of Supernatural, that was a first round exit for the first time ever and really set the tone for the rest of the competition. As always, the engagement of the fans was important to make the summer TV go much more quickly.

A few thanks to give out. Firstly to DarkUFO, whose technical assistance is always useful to me and who obviously enables the competition to exist by virtue of running the site. Also thanks to Laura for organising the 2019 rankings spreadsheet, a task which is ever-so essential but which has previously been ever-so forgettable to me until hours after the final ends in previous years.

And so it comes down to this. Two shows remain. The final of the tenth annual Series Competition.

Lucifer is in the final once again, its second straight appearance. It won last year. LOST is many things, but beating Lucifer was something it just couldn't do. Sorry, John.

Standing in the way of our reigning champion is Shadowhunters. It was tight the whole way through and Psych led at stages, but the former Freeform series just managed to get over the line. Now it has the chance to take the ultimate glory.

We're down to the final four. LOST, Lucifer, Shadowhunters, Psych. Our reigning champion alongside three shows with four semi-final appearances between them. It's a somewhat experienced group. LOST is guaranteed its best finish since 2010, Lucifer is going for its 11th straight poll victory, Shadowhunters has never tasted defeat prior to this stage but has never tasted victory at it either, and Psych is back in the semi-finals and looking to repeat its progression to the last two from 2017. It is all to play for. Who competes in Wednesday's final?

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2019 - Day 29 - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-final time! Just eight shows remain in this year's competition. Which will be crowned champion at the end of the week? We lost three former winners in the third round, with Person of Interest, Outlander and Castle all crashing out.

Dynasty was the show responsible for defeating Person of Interest in round three. On debut, this has been a very impressive performance. It has to face LOST today, This is its first appearance in the quarter-finals season 2014, and its third overall.

Reigning champion Lucifer is still looking good to retain its title. It knocked out Castle in round three, with the 2012 winner unable to challenge in its first round three appearance since 2015. Fringe is into the quarter-finals for the first time since 2013 after beating Legends of Tomorrow — will this be the year it finally goes better than its 2011 runner-up spot?

Shadowhunters spent a long time neck-and-neck with The Blacklist in round three, although it ultimately triumphed by 167 votes. Victory today would give it a third consecutive semi-final spot. Standing in its way is Timeless, into the last eight for the second year running. It defeated The 100 to be here and it remains a true contender.

A sixth appearance out of ten at this stage for Buffy, having defeated Sense8. Only twice has it got past this round, though. To do so today will require victory over Psych, which is looking for a second appearance in the semi-finals. It has already bettered its tenth-place finish of 2018.

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2019 - Day 28 - Sense8 vs. Buffy & Psych vs. Hawaii Five-0

Last day of round three. Sense8 kicks it off, having already secured its best-ever finish. 2015 was its only other appearance in round two, and that was where it stayed. It began 87th on the overall table; it will be much higher by the end of this year's competition. Buffy stands between it and a quarter-final spot, after beating Chuck in round two. Familiar territory for Buffy — it was fourth last year, and it has reached this stage for the ninth consecutive year.

Psych similarly knows this stage. Its two appearances thus far have resulted in second and tenth-place finishes. It beat Supergirl, one of our seeded shows, to be here today, and is looking good to repeat its history. Hawaii Five-0 is our final show of the round, knocking out House last time and reaching round three for the first time since 2012. That was its only appearance here; will it go one better?

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2019 - Day 24 - Supergirl vs. Psych & House vs. Hawaii Five-0

And so we come to the end of round two. Supergirl defeated debutant Chicago Fire to be here today, its second appearance in round two at the fourth attempt. It's a surprisingly modest record for a rather popular show, so it will be seeking to better that today. Can Psych revisit the heights of 2017? It was runner-up that year and tenth in 2018, and Peaky Blinders was on the receiving end of its victory in round one.

House was among those to beat seeded shows in round one, taking down Sherlock. This is its seventh-straight appearance in round two, albeit spread across nine competitions, but only once, in 2014, did it go any further. Hawaii Five-0 is into the second round for the first time since 2013, albeit this being only its second appearance since. The Leftovers was the final show out at the opening stage.

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2019 - Day 15 - Supergirl vs. Chicago Fire & Psych vs. Peaky Blinders

For all its popularity, Supergirl has struggled in its time in the competition so far. Its 28th-place finish in 2017 was sandwiched between two first round exits. Of the DC and Marvel shows to have appeared, only The Defenders has a worse record. Still, there is always time to improve, and opportunity comes today against Chicago Fire, which makes its debut in the competition here. It is the first of NBC's Chicago shows to appear here — surprising, given that the franchise has been running for seven years across four shows.

Psych's 2017 debut was one of the competition's best ever, taking second place, losing to Person of Interest in the final. Last year, it showed the initial impression was not a blip as it came tenth. The 2017 performance was fuelled by the impending movie that December but it should do well again. Peaky Blinders is in for the first time, the BBC show making it in six years after premiering. Doctor Who and In the Flesh — and that was a one-off feat — are the only two British shows to break into the overall top 50, but that's not to say Peaky Blinders can't become the third show in that prestigious company.

Sherlock has never previously reached the quarter-finals but after two years out of the competition, it has the opportunity to achieve its best-ever finish today. The eighth-most nominated current series defeated The Flash in the second round and its overall success this year has been impressive. But Major Crimes, in three years of appearances, has never finished lower than sixth and is surely favourite heading into this tie. It has yet to be truly tested so far this year after brushing aside Bones and Criminal Minds, and this will be no cakewalk.

It was a much closer encounter between The 100 and The Good Place than anyone would have expected, with The CW series winning out by a mere 14 votes. It's difficult to say which show it says more about, but you'd be inclined to think that Psych has a very good opportunity today. The USA Network series was our runner-up last year and is so far on course to repeat that feat. But it hasn't won today yet.

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2018 - Day 24 - The 100 vs. The Good Place & Psych vs. Legends of Tomorrow

The 100, unsurprisingly, proved too strong a force for This Is Us with the NBC show crashing out in the first round. It means The CW series reaches the second stage for the fourth time out of five. Last year was the first time it made round three and to do so again will require victory over The Good Place. Mike Schur's comedy defeated Deadwood on debut but will find a much tougher tie today.

Last year's runner-up Psych is in action once again after knocking out Charmed in the first round. We're far too early into the competition to know whether it can repeat that performance, or if it could become a genuine contender in the years to come, but it will be another good look today as it faces Legends of Tomorrow. It's the latest of all the CW-DC shows to appear in the competition and by beating Gossip Girl ensured it did not equal Arrow and Supergirl's record of being eliminated in the first round on debut.

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2018 - Day 16 - Psych vs. Charmed & Legends of Tomorrow vs. Gossip Girl

Psych's performance last year was astounding, not just because it finished second at the first attempt, but because it was its first appearance in the competition. It seems inexplicable that it required the impending release of a movie — compared to four years where the series was airing weekly episodes — to make its debut here, and that it could dominate in doing so. Previous runners-up haven't always done well the following year, but the USA Network series has a good chance. Charmed didn't feature last year but did once, in 2013, make the semi-finals. Whether the existence of a rebooted version, coming next month, will aid it here will be interesting to see. It has reached every round in the competition except for the final so far, too.

Legends of Tomorrow makes its first appearance today, the only of the four CW-DC series to not debut in its first eligible year. Now that the show is three seasons old, it's hard to say just how well it will do here. Certainly, its opponent today isn't too intimidating: Gossip Girl has crashed out in the first round in each of its four appearances. Last year, it finished 63rd, losing to eventual winner Person of Interest.

Blindspot - Season 4 - Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio Joins Cast

Blindspot is adding to its Season 4 ranks, casting Oscar nominee Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in a top-secret recurring role, TVLine has exclusively learned.

The actress will appear throughout the NBC drama’s fourth season as Madeline Burke, though further details about the character are being kept under wraps. An episode count for the role has also not been determined.

Tell Me a Story - Zabryna Guevara & Dorian Missick Join CBS All Access Fairytale Thriller

Gotham alum Zabryna Guevara and Dorian Missick (Animal Kingdom) are set for key roles in CBS All Access’ straight-to-series psychological thriller Tell Me a Story, from Kevin Williamson and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.

Guevara will play Detective Renee Garcia, a measured detective who operates by the book. While tough and unrelenting, she is not without empathy. She’s the type of detective who trusts her instincts but knows hard evidence is paramount — exactly the type of cop you would want on a case.

Missick portrays Sam, the ringleader of a group of criminals who is steadfast in his unlawful ways. Calculating, intense and undeterred, Sam has managed to fly under the radar and will go to any length to keep it that way.

Confess - Israeli Web Series Adaptation from Julie Delpy in Development at AMC

Julie Delpy is working on bringing the Israeli web series “Confess” to AMC.

Variety has learned exclusively Delpy is developing an adaptation of the web series for the cabler, which she will write and executive produce. Jake Witzenfeld and Moshe Rosenthal, the creators of the original series, will also executive produce.

“Confess” is an anthological series set in Tel Aviv, but Delpy’s version will be set in the United States. Like the original, it will explore the current hook up culture and how digital media is changing people’s private lives.

MOVIES: RoboCop Returns - New Installment from Neill Blomkamp in Development by MGM

EXCLUSIVE: MGM is developing a new installment of RoboCop and has set District 9 director Neill Blomkamp to helm the picture, which is titled RoboCop Returns. The studio hopes to revive a franchise that began with the Paul Verhoeven-directed satirical sci-fi action thriller that Orion released in 1987. Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and exec producing, respectively. Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the Terminator film that Tim Miller is shooting, will rewrite the script that Neumeier and Miner wrote years ago as a planned sequel to Verhoeven’s hit, an installment that never happened. That duo is creatively involved in moving forward their creation for the first time since the original.

According to Deadline, Chris McNally (Supernatural) and Kevin McGarry (Heartland) have joined the cast of Hallmark Channel’s drama series, When Calls the Heart for the upcoming sixth season.

McNally will play Lucas Bouchard, a charming gambler and saloon owner who is hiding more than a card up his sleeve. McGarry is Nathan Grant, the epitome of the strong, silent type and takes all his responsibilities to heart as the new Mountie in town.
