We started with 64. Today, we have just two. This Is Us and Sons of Anarchy. This Is Us was eliminated in the third round last year, marking its best performance. For Sons of Anarchy, this is already an extraordinary achievement, having featured only in 2014 and 2015, and having never previously won a tie in this competition.

Whatever happens, this has been a fabulous competition for both shows. But only one can take the crown. And remember: the final, and the third-place play-off (Animal Kingdom vs. White Collar), takes place over 48 hours.

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2023 - Quarter-Finals

We're down to the last eight shows!

And my mind has been completely blown by said quarter-finalists. For the first time ever in the competition's history, all eight quarter-finalists are finished shows. Not a single one of them is a current show.

I find this utterly incredible, and totally fascinating. I often worry that this competition, and the others that we run, have the risk of becoming a procession of whatever the hottest show of the month is. But this, combined with the fact that the only previous champion to appear this year was Supernatural (eliminated in round one), it reminds me that there are so many shows out there that are loved by so many people. It's great to see.

2022 Character Cup - Round 3B

Welcome to round 3B. These are the final polls of the round so if you have not nominated your favorite Opening Title Sequence for our mini-contest, please do so soon. Nominations will close at the end of this round. There is a link to the nominations page below. Over in the prediction contest, round 3A toppled my standings. For one brief, shining moment, I was doing well. As it stands, Luana currently has the most possible points with 136 but trails no name currently. AmberLacy, last year’s winner, is currently in 3rd place. Luana and AmberLacy are the only ones with 3 final characters still in the running, if I remember correctly. Congrats for your excellent predictions! After round 3, we will take a break until Sunday, CST so that I can organize the mini-contest and get it ready to go. Then it is full sail until the end.

Today we have the last set of polls for round 1 and some of my favorite characters have landed in this part of the brackets. I can’t wait to see how they do. Character Cup Rules:

2. Cheaters suck! - Only one vote per person per poll please. While we will do our best to keep this contest running smoothly, it's up to each person to follow the rules. This Cup is just a fun little piece of internet fluff. It won't get anyone's show renewed or un-cancelled. It has zero effect on ratings. It won't be seen by anyone who has any power in the TV industry, so there is zero reason to cheat. All cheaters do is disrespect themselves, their fandom, their show, the actors, and this community. Just don't.

3. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

4. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly, but I do make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

Throwback Thursday - White Collar - Burke's Seven

Throwback Thursday is a weekly article in which we look back at our favourite TV episodes from the past.

I am a massive fan of heist movies, such as, Oceans Eleven and Catch Me If You Can, Going in Style, I could go on for a while! So when i found a show that felt like a continuation of Catch Me If You Can I jumped at the chance to watch it.

White Collar is a show revolving mainly around a Con man named Neal Caffery and a FBI Agent called Peter Burke. Neal works for the FBI White Collar Division (Art Crime) and Peter, while planning heists and escapes to help his own interests.

Plenty of crazy high jinks ensue throughout the series and the episode Burke's Seven is one of my favourites from the 6 year show.

Spoilers ahead for seasons one and two of White Collar!!

Burke's Seven is season two episode 10 of White Collar. This season focused on determining who killed Neals girlfriend (Kate) at the end of season one. A music box is the teams only connection to the mystery. Later, they are led to a man named Julian Larsen, a middle man for the person behind Kate's murder. However, just before the FBI went to arrest Julian, the previous episode ends with him shooting Mozzie (Neal's closest friend and partner in crime) because he was getting too close

Burke's seven involves Neal and Peter working with forgers to flush Julian Larsen out, Once the FBI arrest him though, the only fingerprints found on the weapon are a match for Peter! This gets Peter immediately suspended and Larsen free. Without the FBI to help, Neal persuades Peter the only way to catch Larsen and clear his name is to pull a con.

The change in dynamics for this episode immediately made it one of my favourite and what I'd say is one of the strongest episodes of the whole series. Not to mention everyone bands together to help Peter. Over the course of the episode, the team and plan come together! Neal and Peter settle on a "sting" to trick Nigerian Prince Bilal into moving his contraband to a location of their choice.

Sara Ellis joins the team with her fancy voice changing tech, Diana fills in Clinton Jones (Peters close co-workers) and join the "sting" (as Peter calls it, not a Con). That's five. Once Mozzie feels better, Elizabeth (Peter's Wife) persuades him to come out of early retirement (a slight overreaction on his part) to help catch his shooter. That is six!

Once the "sting" is in action, everything quickly goes south. Diana distracts Bilal while the cell signal is knocked out so Bilal's phone call to Larsen can be rerouted through a phone booth. However! It was not meant go that smoothly. Another gentlemen uses the phone booth to finish his conversation with his wife.

After both Neal and Peter unsuccessfully try to get rid of the guy, our seventh and final member, Elizabeth Burke comes through and sweeps the gentleman off his feet, telling him to run home ASAP. In the end, it's a very typical ending. The bad guy is caught and Peter gets his badge back (not before he rides a horse through the park to catch Larson though). All is well, until the episode ends with Neal and Mozzie, Peter and Diana discovering who is really behind everything. SHOCK! then cut to credits.

I'm really not giving the episode its proper praise. I highly recommend you watch it, even if it's just this singular episode. If you do watch this one, the follow-up episode is also amazing and is an origin story of how the main characters met.

2021 STV Show Championship - Round 1B

Updated - Round 1A is closed and that means the prediction contest is well on its way. Current leaders with 7 out of 7 correct predictions are Cloisscherzy, t4sos, and Cyn Kin. Nice start, everyone. I am presently tied for 4th in the predictions but my wish list is second from the bottom. That’s fairly typical. Congratulations to Prodigal Son, The Witcher, Chicago P.D., Dynasty, Chicago Fire, The Walking Dead, and MacGyver for making it to the next round.

Welcome back to round 1B. Today we will have a little overlap as the round 1A polls will remain open for about 2 more hours. After the polls close, I will update this post with the results. Spiral/Engrenages:

Along with Line of Duty, Spiral/Engrenages stands head and shoulders above most crime shows that aren’t called The Wire. It deromanticizes the city of Paris, showing the ugly side as it spends its time with Parisian police, lawyers, and judges in their everyday struggles. Each season tackles a new case in a mostly serialised format, and the compelling performance from lead Caroline Proust is worthy of a mention. Her no-nonsense Captain Laure Berthaud doesn't take long to be established as one of the most memorable television portrayals of a law enforcement officer ever. The humanisation of these characters makes them feel real rather than distant and entirely believable. With the high stakes, well-written and well-paced drama that comes with a veteran show like Spiral, which debuted in 2005, you know you’ll be in good hands. For those looking for something different from your standard US television procedurals, Spiral raises the game to another level. (Milo)

Star Wars: The Clone Wars:
6 seasons, 131 episodes

Set in the years between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, the show follows the adventures of well known characters such as Anakin Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi as they battle Count Dooku and his army of Separatists. The show does well with delving deep into the Star Wars mythos, as well as fleshing out the characters. It gives them substantial backstory in a way the movies never did, while introducing new original characters such as Ahsoka, Anakin’s brash snippy apprentice, and the loyal Clone Captain Rex. With action packed adventure, humor, and heart, this show has everything a Star Wars fan can ask for. The show was so popular that a final season was commissioned years after it abruptly ended, due to complications of the Disney merger, in order to provide closure. (The North Remembers)

Supernatural:

The CW’s longest running show comes to an end this fall so if you’re new to the franchise, here is the rundown. After his mother was killed in a mysterious fire, Sam Winchester is raised to hunt and kill monsters. Eventually he decides to make a normal life for himself at college, until his estranged brother Dean arrives to tell him that their father is missing and Sam is pushed back into the life he sought to escape. The two brothers travel the country, looking for their dad as they protect people from the things that go bump in the night. Unlike most CW shows, this has no nauseating love triangles but instead focuses on the genuine brotherly bond between Sam and Dean. While originally a horror show, over time it became so humorous and meta that you end up laughing as much as you get scared. With humor, heart, horror, and the central tenet that family is not just who you share blood with but also who you choose, this show is a must watch if you want to escape The CW’s usual tiresome, love-centric, melodramatic shows. It’s a story about 2 brothers, hunting monsters and saving people but mostly about their love and devotion to each other. Werewolves, vampires, demons, and angels can’t break their bond; not even death can! Sam and Dean Winchester have both been to hell and back, lost each other, and gave their lives for the other one! Supernatural is an incredible, non-romantic, love story of two brothers who are heroes but not perfect. (Deborah)

Swamp Thing:

The best horror show on air right now! (Patrick)

Swamp Thing is one of those extremely rare horror shows that actually manages to make me shiver. The show takes full advantage of its swamp location to set the creepy atmosphere of each episode. The sense of something out there watching you is enhanced by the fact that the swamp in Marais, Louisiana, is actually alive and willing to kill to protect itself. Most of the show’s success is due to the fact that the scariest stories are grounded in the characters on the canvas. After 15 years, CDC doctor Abby Arcane is assigned to investigate an epidemic in Marais. She’s stayed away out of guilt over the death of her childhood best friend, Shauna. Abby’s guilt and Shauna’s mother’s anger are the emotional core of this story and make every creepy moment very effective. This show isn’t simply a ghost story though. There is small town intrigue surrounding the richest man in town trying to hang onto his power, a scientist trying to figure out how he brought the swamp to life (if he did), and Alec Holland, the Swamp Thing, trying to figure out what happened to him and what he is now. Sweet/Vicious:

I tend to hate “important” shows, ones that clearly have a message to deliver. I am also not a fan of shows with sexual assault because they are usually a “very special episode” plotline that gets dropped too quickly or they get too dark. However, I watched the pilot of Sweet/Vicious and was immediately hooked. It is the single best portrayal of the aftereffects of rape that I have ever seen, and yet it equally adds in moments of levity and action so that it doesn’t get overwhelmingly dark. The main characters feel real and are very diverse at first, not friends at all. Still, their shared secret brings them together and, in the end, Jules realizes that Ophelia is her strongest supporter. This show does female friendship like none other. While it can be a whole lot of fun, and I promise you will laugh throughout, it takes its serious moments very seriously and never makes light of rape. In fact, the scene where Jules finally confronts her rapist is the rawest TV moment I have ever seen. Eliza Bennett deserved an Oscar for that scene alone. (Dahne)

Timeless:

Timeless is a sci-fi show about a team recruited to travel through time to stop an evil organization called Rittenhouse from altering the future. The team is led by Lucy Preston, a teacher/historian. The show has great characters and highlights people from history most know little about. It’s fun, exciting, twisty, and worth the watch. (Rachel)

Timeless is not only a pretty accurate and very educational show, it is also entertaining! It manages to keep a show about history amusing. Not to mention you have to pay attention because Timeless has twists in almost every episode. Timeless is honestly the best thing I’ve ever spend my time doing. (David)

Timeless has everything you could possibly want in a show: action, adventure, romance, and humor! The cast is awesome and their characters are relatable. The writing is great and the storylines are different than other television shows. The sets, especially season 1, and wardrobe are very realistic for the time periods. Timeless is a beautiful storytelling of the history that brought us where we are today. It's truly unique and I have a deep affinity for the historical figures that are in each episode. True Detective:
3 seasons, 24 episodes

Some may have been put off by the second season of the True Detective anthology crime series, which may lead viewers to wonder if the 3rd season is worth viewing at all? It is. It's true it doesn't have the A-list actors of previous seasons, but rapper Mahershala Ali paired with Stephen Dorff is as good of a duo as any. Season 3 is a deep portrait of a broken man across three time periods. The unsolved case of missing girl serves as a plot device to the struggles of a African-American Vietnam war vet, husband, father, and detective working within the confines of a predominantly white police force, starting in the 1980's. Like the first season, the choice of the Ozarks gives it back its urban feel, but where maybe the monster isn't some force being battled with on the outside, but on the inside. Even if you've never seen True Detective before, I still recommend the third season above the previous two for its master storytelling and more intimate look at human nature and time, while preserving the best of everything that came before. It may be a good place to ease yourself into the series at large. (Darthlocke)

The Unit:

The Unit is an action military drama created by Shawn Ryan (The Shield and Timeless) that follows the lives of members of a special ops army detachment, who deals with high-stakes operations around the globe. While the soldiers deal with the stress of their assignments, the show also depicts the psychological and emotional struggles that affect them just as much as the danger they face. Back home, their families and loved ones deal with equal turmoil regarding the stress and worries of whether or not the servicemen they love will make it back alive. It’s a four season show that any fan of military action or deep emotional human conflict should put on their list. (The North Remembers)

Wayne:

Wayne, a young, angry kid with a righteous yet brutal sense of justice, is constantly down on his luck. He makes his way to Florida with Del, a girl he likes and who is just as messed up as him, in order to retrieve his dead father’s car from the man his mother left them for. Hot on their trail is Del’s father and brothers, a determined police chief with a very Zen-like life philosophy, his deputy, and their school principal. With every stop they make, they get into some kind of trouble and meet a plethora of equally zany characters as themselves. If you like a good road-trip show/movie/story with multilayered, humane, and endearing characters, then it’s likely this dramedy from YouTube is the show for you. Fair warning: this show is not for the faint of heart. There’s enough punching, kicking, blood, and gore. However, for a show as violent as Wayne gets to also have as much heart as this does, is what really makes it special. (Folie-lex)

If you loved The End of the F***ing World, then this You Tube original is definitely for you. A troubled young man teams up with a girl he just met to go cross country and recover his dad’s stolen car. There are a lot of similarities between the two shows, especially with how the relationship develops between the leads, but Wayne is also its own thing as well. I really love the performances from Mark McKenna and Ciara Bravo. (Lou)

Whiskey Cavalier:

Will Chase is one of the FBI’s top agents. Frankie Trowbridge is one of the CIA’s most prolific spies. After butting heads on a mission to capture NSA analyst Edgar Standish, who seemingly had gone rogue, they are forced to work together and run a team that includes Standish, FBI’s top profiler Susan Sampson, and the team’s designated inventor, Jai Data. Together they constantly save the world from terrorists, human traffickers, arms dealers and other international threats, while having to report to Will’s ex-best friend Ray Prince, a not-so-bright FBI agent who is desperate to “get Will back”. Whiskey Cavalier knows exactly what kind of show it is, a rompy, fun, action show and it fully embrace its identity and plays to its strengths. While never failing to lean into the tropes of the genre, it always knows how to subvert them because these characters are so lovely, lovable, and self aware. With a marvelous ensemble, led by Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan, that has amazing chemistry across the board and some serialized elements, this cute spy show is definitely worth your time. This is spy drama/comedy is packed with tons of action and great international locations! The cast has amazing chemistry and the character development is great! You will be hooked after the first episode. It’s a great mix of serious and comedy in each episode. You will not be disappointed! (Carolyn)

Whiskey Cavalier is a refreshing, clean show about spies who save the world. This show has action, drama, romance, and comedy. Many times you have one or two characters that are your favorite, but not here. I seriously love them all. You can relate to each character but they are all unique. It is filmed in beautiful locations, places I believe most people won’t see, and the music works perfectly. It lets you live vicariously through the show and entertains you for an hour, letting you forget the hustle and bustle of life. It’s a must see. (Shannon)

White Collar:

To describe the show, think of a lighter version of Blacklist with less “who is the daddy” and more bromance and heart. The essence of the show is that two enemies end up working together and become the unlikeliest of friends. FBI Agent Peter Burke finally catches his nemesis, master con artist Neal Caffrey. Rather than serve prison time, Caffrey gets the chance to work off his sentence as an FBI consultant using his expertise in the criminal world to help them catch his far more dangerous associates. With action-packed drama seasoned with quirky tongue and cheek humor, White Collar is a show that will have you crying messily one second and then laughing your butt off the next. The Wire:

While The Shield is more Shakespearean, The Wire is more like the narrative from a Charles Dickens novel. One of the shows that made HBO a big name cable network, it ran for five season and each handles a different case. Jimmy McNulty is a burnt out, alcoholic, Baltimore cop, who more often than not is the center of each season's mystery. While initially a man who has given up, his need to do good causes a change in his character and despite the more of the questionable things he does in later seasons, he remains steadfast in doing what's right for his city. The show does an incredible job at how the case not only affects the cops, but also the high ranking politicians, who seek to capitalize on the crimes, and even the effect is has on the city's criminals, who are equally as compelling. It shows how the systematic infrastructure of Baltimore as a whole is affected by crimes that are committed. (The North Remembers)

Xena:
6 seasons, 134 episodes

Xena is one of the earliest series that set the bar for female protagonists and created one of the most iconic lesbian TV icons. In a time of ancient gods, warlords, and kings, Xena is a mighty warrior who fights injustice and protects the innocent alongside her companion Gabrielle. While originally set in ancient Greece, the show expands to other ancient regions such as China, India, Norway, and Japan. Xena and Gabrielle journey, fighting against monsters and gods as Xena attempts to find redemption for her dark past. Gabrielle develops from a meek, innocent girl to a warrior in her own right. While action and drama are expected, the show has occasional comedy. Some episodes were hilarious such as “A Day in the Life.” If you like action and adventure shows with fantasy elements or just want to see the show that gave Lucy Lawless her start, this is recommended, although production and special effects were kind of mediocre given that the show was filmed in the 1990’s. The right-wing, bigoted, populist Four Star Party led by Vivienne Rook are edging closer to Parliament. The economy is in free-fall, technology is making more jobs obsolete, and things are only about to get worse. Welcome to the nightmarish future that is Years and Years, a show that asks with terrifying realism and frightening accuracy, “Where Are We Headed?” Since the finale aired after a PM leadership election debate in the UK, where despicable frontrunner Boris Johnson didn’t even show, the whole thing looks very believable. This show puts Black Mirror to shame, with former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies weaving a passion project, highlighting the dangers of the world we live in today and society at large. Torchwood: Children of Earth and Doctor Who’s “Turn Left” were trial runs, jumping years into the future each episode to look at what’s coming next for the world, and all made plausible by a powerhouse ensemble performance from the likes of Emma Thompson, Russell Tovey, Rory Kinnear, Jessica Jynes and T’nia Miller. With this segment, we come to the end of the 2018 Summer Pitch Your Show, including the most nominated show, Timeless. In fact, there were so many nominations for Timeless that I included 4 pitches for it. I want to thank everyone who created the 146 pitches represented here. Your nominations were passionate, interesting, and persuasive. I had great fun reading them and I love all the variety. Again I wish we could have put all nominations in the articles. Take Two:
1 seasons, currently airing

Eddie Valetik used to be a police detective. Sam Swift played a police detective on TV for eight seasons before she became a tabloid headline. Fresh out of rehab, she's looking for a new role, maybe a new calling, and a missing persons case might give her the perfect chance to put her vast investigative "experience" to work. One of the joys of Take Two is that it embraces being a semi-parody of other well known she/he team up crime shows. On the surface, the spunky newcomer and reluctant cynic pairing has been done before. However,the difference is Rachel Bilson. She’s a radiant explosion of sunshine and charm, and her character's eagerness to learn the ropes of being a private eye is contagious. Eddie Cibrian supports her effectively, playing opposite. The cases are entertaining and not obviously recycled. There’s enough emotional weight to balance the good hearted humor and a bevy of familiar guest star faces. One of Castle’s own, Seamus Dever, appears in an upcoming episode. An ideal summer show, it doesn’t take itself too seriously Take Two is there to have fun, and that attitude fits it perfectly. Take Two is a perfect show for summer. It’s a light crime procedural with plenty of snark. The two leads have good chemistry, although it has a similar “will they-won’t they” vibe of previous shows like Bones and Castle. That shouldn’t be surprising because the show runners also created Castle. In a nutshell, a former party girl TV star gets the opportunity to land a part as a private investigator and kickstart her flagging career so she shadows a surly, “real-life” PI to get in character. Circumstances change and viola, they become partners for the long-haul. If you shipped Bones, Castle, The Mentalist, or series like them, this is the show for you. (Dahne)

This Is Us:
2 seasons, 36 episodes

This Is Us is a unique, emotionally-draining, and rich family drama that will make you laugh, smile, clap, and most importantly, cry. The pilot is a masterpiece, and it would be horrible to spoil it in any way. The pilot everything changes and what you may have seen in the trailer, will be turned on its head. The cast is incredible, with everyone delivering stunning performances and adding something unique to the show, even guest actors who appear on the screen for no more than 10 minutes. The characters feel like they could be anyone in your family, anyone you see on the street, or maybe even yourself. They are very layered and complex, and face issues that we face in our daily life as well. In every sense of the word, it’s really about US human beings. Most importantly, this show teaches you that while family life is complicated, you have stick together and sort out your problems because having a family is a privilege. If you have not jumped on the bandwagon yet, then please do now. This is absolutely a show that will warm your heart and make you cry! (Missions)

Timeless:
2 seasons, 26 episodes

What if history as you knew it could change drastically in a split second and you wouldn't even know it? Three (un)lucky, relatively normal, but genius characters have to deal with this question when they find out that time travel is real and one of two time machines have been stolen by a man hell-bent on wreaking havoc throughout American history, without a care for who he kills in the process. Written by amazing writers, in collaboration with a historian to ensure accuracy, Timeless has an inclusive cast full of women, POC, and LGBTQ+ representation. The sets and costumes are created with the utmost care and the intricate story captivates audiences of all kinds. This show immediately hooks you and inspires a passion for learning and discussion while never making its audience feel dumb. That doesn’t even touch on how brilliant the characters are individually or how Timeless sheds a light on important historical events and people who are VITAL to today's society and yet are almost entirely overlooked! Timeless is an amazing show that blends diversity, adventure, time travel, inclusion, loyalty, and even a bit of romance into this well balanced show. The cast’s chemistry is off the charts, the writers pay attention to the finest of details making rewatches a must, and the costumes and sets are lavish and transport you back in time. Timeless is an absolute must! (Tish)

The basic concept of Timeless is time travel, but with a twist—villain Flynn has stolen a time machine to stop the organization responsible for killing his wife and child. Historian Lucy, Soldier Wyatt, and Pilot Rufus attempt to stop him by following in another time machine. History is sometimes changed, and we are presented with the question, “Is the course of our lives determined by fate or our own choices?”. Historically accurate places and figures are depicted, such as President Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and Ian Fleming. The cast and writing are superb, and although you might think this is only about drama, you are pleasantly surprised by the humor and passion interwoven into each episode all in a family-friendly way. It's a fun, witty, adventurous and engaging historical show with sci-fi elements. It highlights known and lesser known historical events through time travel and you learn new things every time. It also has an inclusive cast with great chemistry. There is friendship, hardship, and romance. It's a great show for people of any age and families can watch it too. From the first episode onwards, the visuals are astounding, the acting is wonderful, and you can't stop watching. (Miss Annie)

Trial & Error:

Do you like The Office? Do you like True Crime documentaries? Do you like laughing so much that it physically hurts? Then you must watch this show. Josh Segal, a greenhorn defense lawyer from New York City, is sent to the hodgepodge town of East Peck, South Carolina to defend a local poetry professor accused of murder. After season 1, he stays on in the town to take another high profile case. Josh assembles a team that includes town residents, Dwayne and Anne, who each are incredibly hilarious in their individual ways. The characters are deathly funny, but the show also uses sight gags and slapstick humor of the highest quality. Season 1’s suspect is played by John Lithgow. Season 2’s is played by Kristin Chenoweth. Each case unspools with twist after twist, each more fun than the last. It’s nonstop entertainment of the very best kind. (Ellys Cartin)

David Lynch's masterpiece shaped television forever when it aired in 1990 on ABC. It returned last year for a third season revival that blew everybody's minds with some of the most unique hours of television ever broadcast, and that's no hyperbole - episode eight of Season 3 is unlike anything you've *ever* seen before, and the first season is one of television's strongest too. This dreamlike classic is so much more than just a simple investigation to determine who killed Laura Palmer - it is absolutely essential viewing that simply demands to be seen. Without it, television today would be very different. Don't forget the all-time great TV movie prequel (that should be watched after Season 2 for best results), Fire Walk With Me. (Milo)

Hands down, this is one of the most fun shows I have ever watched. Part caper movie, part crime procedural, part bromance, White Collar starts with genuinely likeable characters. Neal Caffrey is a non-violent con man, trying to go straight, while working off his prison sentence with the FBI. His criminal expertise makes him the best person to catch his dangerous counterparts. Peter Burke is his handler, partner, and a rules follower - at least in the beginning. His wife El and he are also the definition of a successful marriage. Rounding out the FBI team are Diana and Jones, who get more fleshed out as the series continues. Still, the real reason to watch this show is Mozzie, Neal’s best friend and conspiracy theorist. He steals every scene he’s in. If you are a fan of Leverage, Ocean’s 8, or Matt Bomer’s charm, check White Collar out.

Young Sheldon:
1 season, 22 episodes

You don’t need to watch The Big Bang Theory to enjoy this sequel! In fact, it’s even better if you don’t. It’s a family-centric comedy that could be called THE COOPERS. Sheldon Cooper is a gifted child who enters high school at age 9, to the mingled pride and concern of his parents George and Mary (Zoe Perry is flawless) and the dismay of his athletic but somewhat dull older brother Georgie. Other characters include Sheldon’s sassy twin sister Missy and even more sassy grandmother Meemaw (Annie Potts rocks!), who lives nearby. The family’s adventures with education, work, and beef brisket recipes make for utterly delightful episodes. If you want a show with heart, there’s plenty of that too. Most importantly, it’s actually funny. The humor is solid, and the characters are likable. Bonus points for it being set in 1989 so there’s great nostalgia moments. (Ellys Cartin)

Young Sheldon is my pick for best new comedy since Fresh Off the Boat premiered. It is also nothing like its predecessor, The Big Bang Theory. While that show relies of crass humor a lot, Young Sheldon relies on the heart-warming but funny side of family. Iain Armitage is shockingly good. It's hard to find young actors who can actually act but he is the embodiment of Sheldon. He keeps Sheldon's quirks but layers them with a child's innocence and vulnerability. Zoe Perry is also amazing as Sheldon's mom, toning down some of her edges to make her a much more nuanced character. Young Sheldon has more in common with quality ABC family comedies than anything else on CBS.

You’re the Worst:
4 seasons, 49 episodes

The title of this one may be You’re The Worst, but the show is actually the best. It takes a look at a relationship between Jimmy and Gretchen, two massively flawed people who find each other and form their own definition of what love is. The show is a comedy but also takes a realistic and honest look at depression and what it can do to a person as well as their partner. If you like comedy, but also a show that makes you think and feel for grey characters, then this is one worth trying. (Beth)

Another huge battle starts us off today. The show that caused this site to exist, LOST, takes on the show frequently regarded as the best currently on network television - soon-to-be-ended Hannibal. To this day, LOST remains one of the more-talked about shows while Hannibal seems to have gained even more popularity amid news of its cancellation by NBC. I'd still place my bets on LOST here, but this could just as easily swing Hannibal's way. Our second poll today sees another J.J. Abrams show - Alias - take on the recently ended White Collar.
