It is so nice and appropriate that Pathlight had and will be again conducting this essential course that help parents to cope with this challenging stage of their child development. Imagine how much worst it could be for children with autism. As parents, it can be very scary to think about how to manage your children of surging hormones. You may have already have a lot of questions about sexuality and other special needs when your children are in or reaching puberty. Some of that fear is a worry about regression as well as the fear of sexual abuse which runs deep in the special needs community. All the more reason not to put off sexuality and sex education. It is so nice and appropriate that Pathlight had and will be again conducting this essential course that help parents to cope with this challenging stage of their child development. It is a very good course and I strongly encourage you to attend it if you know that you are or will be facing with your child’s puberty challenges soon. l Date: 17 Aug 11 (Wednesday) Time: 6.00pm to 9.00pm Venue: Pathlight School Pre-Requisite: None but useful for participants to have attended the Fundamentals of Autism workshop. Target Audience For the following who are working with/caring for pre-adolescents and adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder: Parents/Caregivers Teachers/Educators Therapists and Professionals Course Description This training workshop is meant for parents/caregivers and professionals working with/caring for pre-adolescents or adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Adolescence, which involves the transition from childhood to adulthood, can be trying both for the adolescent and the parents. Historically, puberty has been heavily associated with the onset of adolescent development and brings about biological, social and psychological changes in the adolescent’s life. Most adolescents will find this a confusing phase of their lives. One can only imagine what it will be like for an adolescent or pre-adolescent with autism. This workshop will focus on: increasing participant knowledge and awareness of the needs of adolescents and the issues they face providing participant with skills to confidently talk to pre-adolescents or adolescents about puberty and sexuality issues Participants in this training workshop will also be exposed to key issues in supporting pre-adolescents or adolescents with autism in coping with changes during their adolescent years. A variety of learning activities will encourage the participants’ self-reflection on how the information applies to their own child. As we all knows, social skills is usually one of the greatest challenge for children with autism - whether they are verbal or non-verbal. Social skills do not come naturally to people with autism and need to be taught directly, modeled and coached by family and professionals. Social skills are the behaviours that we exhibit when we are in the company of other people. Research and clinical practice suggests that people with basic social skills such as sitting, waiting, following another person, being part of a group, have a better chance of successfully integrating into their own families, school and the wider community.
