HAWKS RETAIN POINT GUARD BIBBY, CENTER PACHULIA

The turnaround of the Atlanta Hawks from league doormat to a team that’s made two consecutive playoff appearances has sort of flown under the radar of many NBA fans. The productivity of the current roster hasn’t been lost on team owners, however, who have taken a couple of important steps toward keeping the nucleus together. Within a span of 24 hours, the Hawks locked up two big pieces by re-signing pointguard Mike Bibby and center Zaza Pachulia to multiyear deals.

ROCKETS GET NBA INJURY EXEMPTION FOR YAO MING

While the NBA’s Houston Rockets are obviously hoping that superstar center Yao Ming is able to return from a hairline fracture of his foot, they’re not taking any chances. On Wednesday, the league granted the team an injury exemption for Yao which will free up an additional $5.7 million worth of salary cap room. Essentially, the team regained their ‘mid level exemption’ which they’d used to sign free agent small forward Trevor Ariza away from the Los Angeles Lakers.

LONGTIME HABS CAPTAIN KOIVU SIGNS WITH DUCKS

Despite the hoopla surrounding their 100th anniversary, the 2008-2009 NHL season was a profound disappointment for the Montreal Canadiens. After starting the campaign with expectations of a deep playoff run, Montreal struggled to make the playoffs and was swept in the first round by the Boston Bruins. As a result of the postseason debacle, Habs GM Bob Gainey has vowed to remake the team even if it meant making tough and potentially unpopular decisions. On Wednesday, potentially the most unpopular roster move of the offseason came to fruition as longtime Canadiens captain Saku Koivu signed a one year deal with the Anaheim Ducks.

FORMER NFL QB STEVE MCNAIR DEAD AT 36

Three time NFL Pro Bowl QB Steve McNair was found dead of what authorities describe as ‘multiple gunshot wounds’ on Saturday morning in Nashville, Tennessee. His body was located along with that of a woman, Sahel Kazemi, who has been identified as a ‘friend’ of McNair. Kazemi had a single gunshot wound to the head, and a handgun was discovered near her body. While police have so far been tight lipped about their investigation there is growing speculation that it is a murder/suicide scenario which raises very dubious questions about the nature of McNair’s relationship with Kazemi.

The latest example is NBA forward Hedo Turkoglu, who played last season with the Orlando Magic.
Tony Stewart was in no mood to celebrate his victory at Saturday’s NASCAR Coke Zero 400 in Daytona. As so often happens in ‘restrictor plate’ racing, Stewart’s last lap bump of Kyle Busch set off a nasty multicar pileup as he slid through to victory.
MARINERS NIP SLUMPING PADRES TO EXTEND SERIES STREAK

The general idea of interleague baseball is that the games are supposed to be competitive affairs designed to highlight the parity between the AL and NL. When the San Diego Padres are involved, however, that’s simply not the case. The Seattle Mariners defeated the Padres 4-3 at Petco Park on Wednesday night, San Diego’s 13th straight loss against American League teams. That’s a MLB record for interleague futility, and the Padres owe most of that to the Mariners—San Diego has lost 10 straight at home to Seattle and 16 of 20 meetings between the teams overall.

The Washington Nationals haven’t had much success on the road this year, but on Thursday they found some good fortune in a most unlikely venue—New York’s Yankee Stadium. The Nats’ Craig Stammen earned his first major league victory with 6 1/3 innings of shutout work, and Washington blanked the Yankees 3-0. Coupled with a 3-2 win on Wednesday, the Nationals took two out of three from the Bronx Bombers for a rare away series win.
During his prime pro wrestling legend Ric Flair would frequently boast “Like it or don’t like it but get used to it because it’s the best thing going today”. Maybe it’s time that Nick Diaz adopt the ‘Nature Boy’s’ classic catch phrase. The mercurial pride of Stockton, California made a compelling case for ‘pound for pound’ supremacy as he put on a striking clinic against tough Scott Smith before ending the fight in the third round via rear naked choke in the highlight match of Strikeforce’s card at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Saturday night.

Tony Stewart became the first owner/driver to win a race on NASCAR’s top series in over a decade on Sunday as he came from the back of the field to take the checkered flag in the Pocono 500 at Pennsylvania’s Pocono Raceway. It had been a rollercoaster weekend for the NASCAR series leader—he was awarded the pole position for the race based on his first place spot in the standings on Friday after heavy rains washed out qualifying. He then crashed in the first practice on Saturday, totaling his car and having to go to a backup vehicle which also meant that he would have to start at the rear of the field under NASCAR rules.

The Pats posted a decent 11-5 record with Matt Cassel under center as starting QB, but didn’t qualify for the playoffs. Brady, meanwhile, suffered through an early setback in his rehab due to infection which necessitated a second surgical procedure.
MAGIC ROUT CAVS TO ADVANCE TO NBA FINALS

Conspiracy theorists like to suggest that the NBA isn’t above manipulating results to get the outcomes they desire. From the New York Knicks winning the first draft lottery to select Patrick Ewing, to a perceived ‘east coast bias’ during the Chicago Bulls’ championship runs to a suggestion that the NBA “wanted” a Kobe vs. LeBron matchup in the finals those inclined to paranoia have found a way to rationalize many results as being simply due to the league’s efforts to ‘call the shots’. If, however, the league “wanted” a Kobe/LeBron final they clearly didn’t clue the Orlando Magic in on the ‘script’. On Saturday night in Orlando, Dwight Howard badly outplayed LeBron James and the Magic routed the Cavs 103-90 to advance to the NBA finals for the first time since 1995.

When golf legend Jack Nicklaus was still a young upstart in the sport and only starting to tear up PGA courses, legend Bobby Jones commented following ‘The Golden Bear’s’ 1965 Master’s win that ‘he plays a game with which I am not familiar’. Following his absolute destruction of Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 98, there are likely a few MMA fighters saying the same thing about the new light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida.
The Denver Nuggets have advanced to the NBA Western Conference finals, and will host the Los Angeles Lakers in game three of the series next Monday night at the Pepsi Center. The problem is that the top US pro wrestling promotion, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), booked that date for a live broadcast of their ‘Monday Night RAW’ television program. Such conflicts are common in both the NBA and NHL during the lengthy postseason, and the long standing policy in most instances is that the home sports team gets scheduling precedence over the ‘one night stand’ event. Some teams even have this contractually guaranteed with their venue lease, but even those who don’t usually get the benefit of the doubt.

Mike Cook found that out the hard way in the co-main event of the Maximum Fighting Championships’ MFC 21: Hard Knocks event on Friday night. After spending the run up to fight week making fun of Lashley’s tenure in the WWE, Cook lasted a mere: 24 seconds before being choked unconscious via a guillotine choke.
CANUCKS SHINE ON DEFENSE IN ROAD WIN OVER BLACKHAWKS

Entering the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs there was some concern that Vancouver Canucks’ goaltender Roberto Luongo wouldn’t be able to maintain his excellent form. The problem was that his teammates were doing a poor job keeping the pressure off their netminder, forcing him to face a lot more shots than he should. After struggling in the first two games of Vancouver’s second round series, Luongo was back in the groove on Tuesday night as he allowed only a single goal while the much maligned Canucks’ defense limited Chicago to 24 shots on goal. This allowed the Blackhawks to win game three 3-1 and take a 2-1 lead in the best of seven Western Conference semifinal series.

LEBRON CELEBRATES MVP WIN AS CAVS ROUT HAWKS

On Tuesday afternoon, the NBA announced that LeBron James was the league’s MVP for this season. Later that evening, he went out and played like the MVP as the Cleveland Cavaliers routed the Atlanta Hawks 99-72 in the opening game of the NBA Eastern Conference semifinals. It was the Hawks’ 14th loss in their past 15 road games—a fact that doesn’t bode well for game two, which is back at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday night.

Washington Capitals’ 21 year old Russian rookie goaltender Simeon Varlamov is very close to moving beyond ‘phenom’ status. Backstopped by his solid goaltending, the Caps defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 at the Verizon Center on Monday night to take a 2-0 lead in the best of seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. The series will now shift to Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena for games three and four starting Wednesday night.

MAGIC TOPPLE CELTICS IN SERIES OPENER

The Orlando Magic dug themselves a hole in their opening round series against Philadelphia due to an inability to protect big leads. They almost did it again on Monday night as they opened their second round series at the TD BankNorth Garden against the Boston Celtics. Up by 28 early in the third quarter, the Magic watched the Celtics close to within three before J.J. Redick’s free throws put the game away in the final seconds earning Orlando a 95-90 decision and a 1-0 series lead.

ROCKETS SHOCK LAKERS IN GAME ONE OF NBA WEST SEMIS

No one really made a big deal about the Houston Rockets’ opening round game 1 win on the Portland Trailblazers’ home court. The Blazers, after all, are the NBA’s youngest team and were facing a veteran Houston squad in their first real playoff experience. What they did on Monday night, however, is definitely a ‘big deal’: the Rockets shocked the presumptive Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers on their home court in game one of their second round series. The Rockets took control of a tight game in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat the Lakers 100-98 and take a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

HOWARD-LESS MAGIC RIP SIXERS TO ADVANCE

With Dwight Howard suspended by the NBA for game six, the Philadelphia 76ers apparently figured they could just ‘phone in’ a win and advance to game seven on Saturday. The rest of the Orlando Magic had other ideas. With the NBA’s best defensive player watching the game from his hotel room, his teammates stepped up and the Magic routed the Sixers in Philly 114-89 to win the best of seven opening round series four games to two. Orlando will face the winner of the Chicago-Boston series in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

CANUCKS SURVIVE BLACKHAWKS’ COMEBACK TO TAKE GAME ONE

The Vancouver Canucks swept the St. Louis Blues in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and the primary reason for the 4-0 victory was the outstanding goaltending of Roberto Luongo. In the first game of their Conference semifinal series against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night at Vancouver’s GM Place it was more of the same—for two periods, at least. After opening a 3-0 lead heading into the final twenty minutes of play, the Blackhawks tied the game with a furious third period comeback. The Canucks needed some late game heroics from Sami Salo, but in the end were able to prevail 5-3 and take a 1-0 lead in the best of seven set.
