The Aftermath: Eagles Week Nine Injury Report

As if losing to the Cowboys at home wasn't bad enough, the Eagles now have a lengthy injury list to deal with during the coming week. Probably the most worrisome loss is that of weakside linebacker Akeem Jordan, who suffered a hyperextended knee and a bone bruise. The Eagles have had a very rough season at linebacker so far, and with Jordan's status labeled as "uncertain" the defense will have to rely on backups Jeremiah Trotter, Moise Fokou, Tracy White, and Joe Mays, none of whom have performed very impressively so far. Let's hope Jordan gets better soon so he can bring his tenacity back to the field.

Another potential major loss comes in the form of an ankle injury to one Jason Peters. Peters' ankle has been giving him trouble all season, and while Todd Herremans is certainly a capable fill-in at left tackle, the last thing the Eagles offensive line needs is for another starter to miss playing time.

Leonard Weaver, Ellis Hobbs, and Quintin Demps all made the injury list as well. Fortunately, Weaver's sprained ankle is not expected to cost our valuable fullback any practice time. However, the same cannot be said for cornerback/kick returner Hobbs, whose neck injury will require further evaluation. Demps' ankle sprain should limit his practice time this week, but there is a chance he will play against San Diego this Sunday.

But not all is lost, Eagles faithful. This week we get to witness the return of three and a half starters: Brian Westbrook, Victor Abiamiri, Chris Gocong, and Kevin Curtis. According to Andy Reid, all four players are expected to practice this week. Not a moment too soon, either. The absence of Gocong was certainly felt last game, as rookie backup Moise Fokou drew two very costly penalties, including one that negated an Ellis Hobbs return TD. The return of Westbrook and Curtis will certainly help our offense by giving Donovan McNabb more options to throw to, but don't expect to see Curtis take back his starting job from Jeremy Maclin. Curtis has been out the entire season and will likely have a lot of rust to knock off.

In an interview with Bob Costas before last night's game, Michael Vick had this to say about what he wants to be doing next year.

"I won't be a Wildcat guy. I can't," Vick told NBC. "It's a different style of play. It's almost like a hit-or-miss type of thing. My position is quarterback. That's what I was born to do."

I totally agree with the bolded part. It's fairly obvious that Michael Vick can't come in for one or two plays a game and do anything effective. The Vick experiment as it stands now is DOA. I don't really blame Vick per se, since the way he's used gives him very little chance to make a play but then again I'm not sure he's ready to handle much more anyway...

Vick also expressed to Costas that it would be tough to come back to the Eagles next year as a backup/wildcat player.

"It would be hard," Vick said of returning to the Eagles, according to excerpts released by NBC. "It would be an everyday struggle. But I would have to take that time to hone my skills and get better. I'm excited about the opportunity I have moving forward whether it's with Philadelphia or another team."

Basically Vick wants to be a starting QB next year... and you know what? I think the Eagles do too. I think the Eagles wanted that all along. Not starting here, but starting for whatever team offers the most in terms of picks this offseason. Watching the state of QB play around the league this past weekend, there has to be 5 or 6 teams that would be seriously interested in having a guy like Mike Vick as their starting QB. Especially considering that the Eagles have absorbed the brunt of the PR hit for bringing him back.

His math was another story.

They returned to the site of one of the most regrettable performances in franchise history and seized control of first place in the NFC East with a 20-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Donovan McNabb was asked whether he thought he got the yardage needed on that 4th down QB sneak.

"I did. I felt like half of my body was past the marker which I've seen. I landed on top of one of our guys and just slid and kept on moving. When you, I guess the question, you probably replay it, I guess you may have felt that I did get it. We thought we had the first down, but unfortunately I guess twice we didn't."

Were those type of calls frustrating?

"It's frustrating, it's frustrating you know, just different plays in the game that you could have made and then when it comes down to a call like that obviously it's tough for any team to bounce back but still we had another opportunity to get back down there, try to put points on the board. So I'm still not going to make any excuses. There were opportunities in that game that we could (have) really blew it out of the water, but we didn't and credit to them."

Andy Reid was asked about those challenges but...

"I can't go into the challenges. I can't do that, unless you (the media) are willing to pay for it. They go the way they go."

Leonard Weaver talked about the teams' inability to convert short yardage.

"It's pretty tough. We always go out there as players and know we're going to play against everybody -- the refs, the other team. The bottom-line is we didn't convert when we needed to, as a team. That reflects when you can't get those things, and it makes it tough for our defense to have to come right back out after they shut them down."

More after the jump

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips seemed to downplay his team's win a bit

"We are leading the division right now, but we're only one-and-one(in the division). We have four more division games. We have a tough road in the second half of the season, but after two-and-two you can't be more pleased than where we are right now. It was an exciting win for us. It was a hard-fought game, hard-hitting game. I thought we were very physical as were they."

Jeremy Maclin talked about the two interceptions last night which were both on balls thrown his way.

"The first one was all my fault. I take full responsibility. The second one I was expecting a different throw. It is what it is. Those two plays were big, but we still had a chance to win the football game. There were a lot of mistakes."

Sheldon Brown talked about the big TD he gave up

"He ran a double move. I was in the coverage. [It was] 'Cover 1'. [QB] Tony [Romo] pumped, [Austin] ran a slant, I drove the slant, [and Austin] got open deep. Anytime you do that, if a guy catches the ball, you just expect to get him on the ground and line up to play another play."

And finally Sheldon was asked about all the penalties

"It wasn't just the penalties. We made a lot of mistakes throughout the course of the game. And then there were some plays in there where we didn't execute, and we were able to still win the play, but we didn't execute. Anytime you have those penalties, obviously it affects the game. I think the kick return was called back on a penalty, the interception return had a penalty that brought some yardage back, so it's tough. You can't win that way.""

The Eagles' performance tonight did little to silence the critics who call the Eagles offense an "all or nothing" unit. Last week, they hit their big plays against the Giants and won in blowout fashion. Tonight, the big plays weren't there and they lose a slow, grinding game to the Cowboys by 4. The defense wasn't great by any means(particularly the tackling), but the story of this game is once again the inconsistency of the Eagles defense. There were dropped passes, poor throws from McNabb, inconsistency up front, inability to convert short yardage... It was many of the same problems we saw in the loss to Oakland. I'm not exactly sure what to do with this offense other than just pray the good Eagles show up on a given week.

That said, we've seen this script before. The Eagles drop the early game to Dallas and then beat them in December when the pressure is on. How many Decembers in a row have we seen this? Hopefully the Cowboys enjoy their midseason win while they can. Round one to you guys, the decisive round comes in week 17.

The Eagles don't have any time to dwell on this one. A very tough game is looming against San Diego. That's a cross country trip against a decent out of conference opponent. Those aren't games the visitors win very often. Unless it's against the Giants I guess...

I've got a few more thoughts after the jump

Peters shows his worth

Gotta give credit to Jason Peters who absolutely owned DeMarcus Ware tonight. Ware made a few plays when Peters was off the field, but when he came back Ware disappeared. It got so bad that Dallas actually started lining up Ware on the other side to get him away from Peters. Solid job tonight by the $60 million man. I also have to give him credit for coming back after what looked like a very nasty play. A defender rolled up on his leg from behind, which we've seen led to torn ACLs all too often. Peters missed a few series, came back, and dominated.

What is the point of replay?

No one should take this as me blaming the refs. No doubt the Eagles had plenty of opportunities to win this game and have only themselves to blame. But how on earth did the refs see nothing on that McNabb sneak play? The camera angle was clear as day, the ball was clearly ahead of where they marked it... and yet the ruling on the field stands? What didn't they see? I'd love to hear an explanation of exactly why they felt that ball was spotted correctly.

David Akers came to play

If you were going to point out a positive tonight, one easy one would be David Akers who surprised just about everyone in the game thread by kicking FGs of 45, 48, and 52. Akers has been very hit or miss from beyond 40 for a while now, but for tonight at least he was back to his old self.

Can the Eagles ever get a big play at the end of a game?

Maybe it's late and I'm just not remembering correctly, but does it seem like the Eagles never make a big play at the end of a game? It just seems like every time the offense needs to make a drive or the defense needs to get a stop, they just fall short. The defense needed to stop the Cowboys once at the end of this game to give the offense a shot and couldn't do it. Now, I do give the defense some leeway considering they played decent overall and were without all 3 of the LBs they were supposed to start the year with. After Akeem Jordan was injured on the previous kickoff the only starter in the LB corps was Will Witherspoon, who only joined the team a couple weeks ago. It left them pretty exposed to the run and short pass, which is exactly what Dallas did to get the couple first downs they needed.

Every Eagles win this year has come pretty much in blowout fashion. This was the first really close game they've played all year. Last year, they won exactly one game where the final score was within at least a TD. That was the 20-14 win over the Giants which was only within one score was because the Giants scored a TD with under 2 minutes left. The Eagles lost 6 of their 7 games that were within one score last year. This year, they're 0-2 in games decided by one score. In 2007, they were 4-7 in close games. There definitely seems to be an issue there.

Some timeouts at the end would have been nice

As the previous paragraph said, it probably wouldn't have mattered that much if the Eagles could have stopped the clock at the end of the game... but still, their margin for error was very small with no timeouts. I suppose whether you're upset about this depends on how you felt about the challenges. Reid lost both and used another timeout somewhere than I don't even remember. I thought the first challenge was pointless, but I would have thrown the flag on the second one myself.

To continue that streak, he'll have to throw away from Sheldon Brown, who has 21 tackles and 3 interceptions, while having the lowest completion rate against him of any other cornerback in the NFL.

I just returned from Valley Ranch, where two Cowboys offensive players said they thought the middle of the Eagles' defense would be vulnerable. In particular, the Cowboys believe Eagles safeties Sean Jones and Quintin Mikell could leave some holes in that area of the field.

S.A.'s Demps overcoming ‘growing pains' with Eagles
Eagles free safety Quintin Demps' first career interception couldn't have come at a better time for the Roosevelt graduate. In addition to sparking a scoring drive, his theft of an Eli Manning pass in last week's 40-17 thumping of the Giants restored Demps' confidence in himself. "It let me know that I still got it," Demps said.

Sunday Football Open Thread

No Eagles until tonight, so we get to enjoy a day of Sunday football. It'll be a fairly tough week for our NFC East rivals as Washington travels to Atlanta in an early game and the Giants host the Chargers at 4:15.

Cardinals/Bears, Texans/Colts, Ravens/Bengals, and Dolphins/Patriots should all be interesting games as well.

Despite the fact that Andy Reid has insisted all week that Brian Westbrook would play this weekend, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the RB is out against the Cowboys.

In an NFC East divisional showdown between Philadelphia and Dallas, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook is not expected to play, according to two league sources.

An Eagles official Sunday morning was non-committal.

Obviously we'd like to have Westbrook back, but it's not as if the Eagles have relied on him this year. Of all the big plays and highlights the Eagles offense has generated this year, Westbrook hasn't really been a part of any. Still, it would be nice to have #36 back there in a big game.

Get your BGN fix on Sprint NFL Mobile Live Story

Gamedays here on BGN are brought to you by Sprint and their NFL mobile live service.

Over the past few weeks I've been talking about some of the different things you can get on Sprint NFL Mobile Live. Live radio of every game, NFL network streaming live, video highlights, score alerts... but one thing I haven't really made a big deal of, is this very site. When you set the Eagles as your favorite team, you get up to date news from BGN delivered straight to your phone. I think it's cool that Sprint doesn't just appreciate our audience, they also like our content and our community.

Sprint is also giving 17 trips to this years superbowl. All you've got to do be registered is click here and vote each week on what you think was the "Can't Miss Play of the Week." Every time you vote, you are entered for a chance to win one of those 17 Super Bowl trips.

Earlier this week we ran some choice words from Ravens' coach John Harbaugh on the Dallas Cowboys. Today, even more of the thoughts he shared on "America's Team" in the book Game Changers have come out.

"Andy Reid is the guy who ruined the [current] decade for the Cowboys. Think about it. They've been trying to get back to where they were [in the 1990s] the whole decade – and the Eagles have been the ones keeping them from getting there. They've stuck daggers in the Cowboys year after year."

Dallasnews.com agreed with Harbaugh's assessment saying "That's beyond Harbaugh's opinion – it's fact." In what is a very entertaining read, they detail a decade of Dallas disappointments vs the Eagles.

"Go out and hit them in the mouth," Jenkins said. "Just be physical and hopefully we can shut them down."

Of course, Jenkins isn't all talk. He backs up what he says with some devastating physical play on the field.

Moise Fokou Likely to Start at OLB

With starting Outside Linebacker and quietly consistent defender Chris Gocong nursing a pair of leg injuries, it is becoming increasingly likely that rookie Moise Fokou will play this Sunday’s game versus the Cowboys as one of the three leading LBs. Fokou was selected in the 7th and final round of this year’s Draft, but surprisingly appeared one of the franchise’s better Linebackers while displaying his abilities in Training Camp and the preseason.

If Gocong indeed is held out of action this week, Fokou (pictured) will make his first career start, but has already seen the field enough to understand the physicality the game requires to succeed as a defensive starter. Head coach Andy Reid stressed that the former University of Maryland star is excited and prepared for the opportunity, saying: “He’s worked hard,” “Even when Chris [Gocong] was healthy, he worked in there during practice.” So far this season, Fokou has tallied 6 tackles as a reserve LB/special teams player. Last week, when Gocong exited the lineup for a few drives, the rookie stepped in and–despite not recording a load of statistics–assisted pressure the Giants’ passing game, as well as force running plays outside for little gain.

While Fokou will likely be on the field for most of the game in his first starting appearance, Gocong expects to be back on the field by Week 10, when the Eagles face the San Diego Chargers. He is currently tending to a strained quad muscle, as well as a hamstring strain, and was unable to participate in three practice sessions over the past few days, hence his current “Doubtful” game status.

In other injury news, RB Brian Westbrook sat out of today’s practice to give his concussion an extra day to heal for Sunday’s rivalry contest. His absence from this afternoon’s drills and preparation has been said to be because of precautionary reasons, and that the starting offensive threat did not suffer any set-backs in his head injury. He is still expected to play this week and contribute significantly to the game strategy, according to Reid.

Scheme Session: the big-play Eagles | National Football Post
In today’s edition of "Scheme Session" here at the NFP, we are going to take a look back at the Giants-Eagles matchup from Sunday, where Donovan McNabb once again hooked up for a big play down the field that produced points. This time—a 54-yard TD pass that gave the Eagles a 23-7 lead and put the Giants away for good.

Cowboys return to scene of the crime - NFC East - ESPN
In one of the most regrettable performances in franchise history, the Cowboys suffered an embarrassing 44-6 loss. Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown intercepted Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo late in the first half, setting up a Brent Celek touchdown catch that gave the Eagles a 24-3 lead. The rest of the afternoon is still a blur for some Cowboys players and coaches -- and they'd prefer to keep it that way.

Cowboys' Williams: 'I'm Not a T.O.'
While his lower-paid teammate breaks records, Cowboys receiver Roy Williams sounds like a broken record.

More after the jump

Eagles-Cowboys: 100th meeting | Philadelphia Daily News | 11/06/2009
The Eagles face the Dallas Cowboys for the 100th time when they meet Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. Some facts about the series:

Les Bowen: Eagles prepare for well-rounded Cowboys offense | Philadelphia Daily News | 11/06/2009
WHEN THE PASS-HAPPY Eagles run the ball effectively, as they have the past few weeks, their offensive players are eager to tell you how much of a difference balance makes, how it pushes defenses back on their heels. This Sunday night, when the Cowboys come to town, we'll see the other side of that coin

Eagles TE Celek now among the best in NFL | Philadelphia Inquirer | 11/04/2009
With this season set to reach the midpoint Sunday when the Eagles face the Cowboys in a first-place showdown at Lincoln Financial Field, coach Andy Reid's tight end should most definitely be included in the debate about the division's best player at that position.

Dallas Cowboys motivated by more than revenge | Dallas Cowboys News | Sports News | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News
Bradie James avoids the word revenge. But the Cowboys linebacker doesn't want to fool himself or anyone else, either. He admits the team's 44-6 loss in Philadelphia to end last season is incentive as the Cowboys prepare to return to the scene of the crime. More important, James believes this game will speak volumes as to where the team stands at the midway point of the season.

John Harbaugh is currently the coach of the Ravens, but spent nearly a decade in Philadelphia as the Eagles special teams coordinator. So clearly he has no love lost for the Cowboys. In a new book written by some local Philly sportswriters, ESPN NFC East blogger Matt Mosley found a very interesting quote from Harbaugh...

Asked why the Eagles have had so much success from 1999-2008 and the Cowboys haven't won a playoff game during that period, Harbaugh had this to say:

"Why is that? Because what Andy Reid and his program stand for if the opposite of what the Cowboys stand for. The Cowboys are a star system. It's all about building around individuals first and collecting talent, collecting great players. Andy has always been about building a team. And over the long haul, it's a team sport, and one of the greatest examples of that is what's happened with the Eagles and the Cowboys over the last 10 years. The Cowboys stand for everything that's wrong with the NFL."

That should help fan the flames of not only the Eagles/Cowboys rivalry, but might spark something between Dallas and Baltimore as well.
