Observations from the NovaCare Complex.

Today marked the ninth Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice ahead of the 2025 NFL season. The padded session lasted for about one hour and 45 minutes. Here’s what I observed at the NovaCare Complex.

EAGLES PRACTICE NOTES

Nick Sirianni had the Eagles working on a lot of situational football on Monday. Offense backed up against their own end zone, third down conversion to ice the game, etc.

JALEN HURTS UPDATE: Strong day for Hurts, especially considering the situational context. With the Eagles’ offense backed up against their own goal line, Hurts hit DeVonta Smith for a first down completion near the left sideline despite tight coverage from Quinyon Mitchell. Hurts hit Johnny Wilson on a slant for another third down conversion. Facing 3rd-and-7 from the minus 4-yard line, Hurts connected with Jahan Dotson for yet another first down. Hurts made a real nice layered throw to DeVonta Smith in the middle of the field for a 15+ yard gain that had run after the catch potential. No surprise here but Hurts stepped up when the pressure was on. Nice to see him heating back up after a cool stretch.

EAGLES INJURY REPORT:

DID NOT PRACTICE

LB Zack Baun (back contusion)
WR A.J. Brown (hamstring)
S Lewis Cine (hamstring)
RB Montrell Johnson Jr. (hamstring)
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. (knee)
C Trevor Keegan (back)
DT Byron Young (groin)

Baun has missed five straight practices.

Marshall has missed four straight practices.

Brown, Cine, Keegan, and Johnson Jr. have missed two straight practices.

Young is a new addition to the injury report.

LIMITED PARTICIPATION

LS Charley Hughlett (neck)
CB Mac McWilliams (quad)
S Andrew Mukuba (shoulder)
LB Nolan Smith (concussion)
LB Ben VanSumeren (ankle)

Nolan Smith returned to team drills ... before then leaving practice early with trainers.

Hughlett was limited for the second day in a row. The veteran was participating in some team drills.

McWilliams was upgraded to limited after missing two practices. He was limited to position drills. Ditto for VanSumeren.

Mukuba still isn’t participating in team drills. Vic Fangio indicated the rookie safety is unlikely to play in the Eagles’ first preseason game.

IN-PRACTICE INJURIES

Nolan Smith and Kenyon Green were seen leaving the practice field with trainers. Smith’s ailment wasn’t clear. Green had been seen vomiting.

Tyler Steen was down on the ground in pain after seemingly getting hit where the sun don’t shine. He didn’t miss any reps, however.

UPGRADED TO FULL PARTICIPATION

DeVonta Smith (back tightness), Jihaad Campbell (shoulder), and E.J. Jenkins (hamstring) were removed from the injury report.

DeVonta Smith is still really good. He regularly gave the defense trouble. Cooper DeJean trailed him after a number of catches.

The defensive play of the day was made by Quinyon Mitchell, who intercepted a Tanner McKee pass. The quarterback seemingly didn’t see him lurking in coverage. That’s Q’s second pick of training camp. And it happened right around the time when it was revealed that Mitchell made the NFL Top 100 at No. 49 overall. He must’ve known. Mitchell allowed some completions to DeVonta on Monday but he really made the wide receiver work for them. As Zaza Pachulia once said: “Nothing easy.”

Top 100 Players of 2025:@Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell debuts at No. 49! @NFLFilms pic.twitter.com/zA3TvQvjCK
— NFL (@NFL) August 4, 2025

POSITION BATTLE UPDATE — CORNERBACK: Prior to practice, Vic Fangio said that the competition between Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo “is close.” The first first-team cornerback reps indicate as much with Jackson up first on five days so far and Ringo up first on four days. Today was Ringo’s day, though the Eagles continue to rotate them throughout team periods. I wrote down Ringo’s name down just once and it was for being flagged for pass interference in 1-on-1s. I wrote Jackson’s name down for two losses to Elijah Cooks in 1-on-1 (one where he got shoved off the line of scrimmage, another where he got beat downfield) and one loss to Cooks in team drills. So, I’d say Ringo had the better day comparatively

Eli Ricks had some struggles in 1-on-1, being flashed for pass interference while going up against Jahan Dotson and then biting hard on a double move to allow a wide open deep reception. Ricks rebounded in team drills, breaking up a 3rd-and-2 pass attempt to Darius Cooper over the middle. Ricks also broke up another throw to Cooks on a comeback.

Vic Fangio says Eli Ricks has made some good plays “but needs to eliminate the negative ones, too.”#Eagles
— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) August 4, 2025

POSITION BATTLE UPDATE — LINEBACKER: With Baun out, Smael Mondon and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. spent time together as the first-team off-ball linebackers. Jihaad Campbell rotated in, too. But Mondon getting time with the starters is interesting and could reflect how he’s had a good camp. Also, it doesn’t seem like Fangio fully trusts Campbell just yet.

Vic Fangio on Jihaad Campbell:

“We’re probably guilty of putting a little too much on his plate. But time is coming. The days [of training camp] are disappearing.”#Eagles
— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) August 4, 2025

Vic Fangio on Jihaad Campbell’s performance at limited snaps as an edge rusher:

“He needs a lot of work at it.”#Eagles
— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) August 4, 2025

Campbell might have some Ernie Sims to him in terms of maybe practicing a little too physically. There’s a fine line between giving full effort and getting a teammate injured in practice. I don’t think Campbell has hurt anyone yet and he’s usually been quick to apologize for contact that goes a little too far. His aggression could ultimately serve him well in the real games. The Eagles will hope it doesn’t lead to injuries before those start.

Here’s an exchange from Fangio’s press conference:

Q. Going back to the edge spot. You had said last time that nobody stood out either positive or negatively just yet. Has that changed with OLB Azeez Ojulari or OLB Joshua Uche yet?

Vic Fangio: Yeah, I think Josh has had some good practices here of late, he’s flashed and had some really good plays. Like a lot of the guys that are new, he just needs to eliminate the negative plays and the negative plays aren’t something that you guys may see or know. It’s just reacting and covering and the way we want to play the run. The nuances of the defense. He has to master those, but overall he’s had a good camp and I see him getting better each and every day and the same thing with Azeez.

Sure seems like Uche is ahead of Ojulari. The former spent time with the first-team defense on Monday, ahead of Jalyx Hunt at times.

Moro Ojomo’s had a very strong summer but he did bite on a hard count when the defense was trying to prevent the Eagles’ offense, which was backed up against their end zone, from getting 4+ yards. After the rep, Kevin Patullo gave Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson high fives for prompting the flag to Ojomo’s encroachment.

Matt Pryor has been repping at first-team right tackle at times to give Lane Johnson rest. Pryor mauled Patrick Johnson on a running play. He also held off Ogbo Okoronkwo with ease in a 1-on-1 rep. Pryor has a chance to be the top backup at every non-center position. At the very least, the top backup at RG and RT.

Ainias Smith isn’t having the disastrous start to camp that he did last year. But I struggle to say he’s looked good this summer. He had trouble tracking a ball in the air during 1-on-1s. He failed to make a leaping grab on a pass over the middle in 7-on-7s. In fairness, he did have a catch for a first down while the second-team offense was facing 3rd-and-7 from the minus 4-yard line.

Johnny Wilson has mostly struggled this summer but this was a good day for him. He created separation for a deep catch against Parry Nickerson in 1-on-1s and he caught a pass on a slant for a third down conversion. I don’t think the Eagles are ready to give up on him quite yet.

Elijah Cooks continues to cook. I liked how he used his size and strength to legally shove Adoree’ Jackson at the line of scrimmage to create some separation in 1-on-1s. He then made a good over-the-shoulder grab to beat Jackson in their next battle. Cooks beat Jackson in team drills to set up a 2nd-and-2. Cooks does have to figure out how to stop getting stifled by Ricks.

Darius Cooper saw some first-team reps. He didn’t capitalize, however. A Hurts pass skimmed off his hands.

The offensive play of the day was made by undrafted rookie Giles Jackson, who was able to track and haul in an over-the-shoulder bomb by Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Maybe DTR has a chance to make the roster, after all? Or maybe they’ll look to trade DTR for whatever they can get and keep Kyle McCord as QB3? Anyway, back to Jackson. It was cool to see him make that play after he dropped a pass where he didn’t seem to track the ball well earlier in practice during 1-on-1s.

McCord threw a bullet to Kylen Granson for a first down. He also ripped a throw to Taylor Morin for a short touchdown in goal-to-go.

Trevor Booker and Gabe Hall each had deflections at the line of scrimmage. I wonder if the Eagles might keep six defensive tackles: Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Moro Ojomo, Ty Robinson, Booker, and Hall.

ShunDerrick Powell continues to flash. The undrafted rookie running back had another long run at one point. He also caught a short pass in the flat and broke free of Dallas Gant, who got a hand on Powell’s jersey before the running back ran through the linebacker’s grasp.

Some down-the-depth chart observations for you: Joe Evans got to Keilan Robinson in the end zone for a would-be safety. Undrafted safety Maxen Hook blew up a goal-to-go Powell run by stuffing the run in the hole.

The Eagles worked on some special teams contingencies with Braden Mann kicking field goals, Cooper DeJean holding, and Grant Calcaterra long snapping. Jake Elliott also held a snap from new guy Christian Johnstone (wearing No. 37, also worn by Maxen Hook) on a made Mann field goal.

I’m a big dog guy. Love dogs. Good Pink Floyd song, too.

Reggie White Lurie, the Eagles’ Director of Joy, is at practice today. pic.twitter.com/ZOoBkfTXal
— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) August 4, 2025

UP NEXT: The Eagles are back at practice on Tuesday morning starting at 10:00 AM Eastern. You can find more of the Eagles’ training camp schedule by clicking here.

Philadelphia Eagles depth chart revealed ahead of first preseason game

Bill Streicher-Imagn Images

Officially unofficial.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ first team-issued depth chart ahead of the 2025 NFL season is here!

And now to immediately tamper the excitement: it doesn’t mean much.

It’s not like this depth chart is carefully crated with insight from the front office and coaches. It literally says “Compiled by the Eagles Communications department” (AKA the PR staff) at the top of the graphic. And it’s only issued to the public because it’s mandated by the league.

“I was 22 years old and I was the one putting out the official depth chart…”

A word of warning on “official” depth charts from @FG_Dolan on the Fantasy Feast podcast: pic.twitter.com/SPe93peCgQ
— Ross Tucker Podcast (@RossTuckerPod) August 9, 2023

Even if this was the Eagles’ real depth chart, there’s still plenty of time for things to change between now and roster cuts down to 53 players. There’s still a handful of training camp practices and three preseason games left.

But for the sake of #content, let’s put the cynicism aside and play along.

H: Braden Mann

LS: Charley Hughlett, Christian Johnstone

PR: Cooper DeJean, Jahan Dotson, Ainias Smith

KR: Will Shipley, A.J. Dillon

NOTES

The veteran Dorian Thompson-Robinson was given the edge over the rookie Kyle McCord. DTR is making a stronger push for the roster than originally expected.

Will Shipley is ahead of A.J. Dillon. Dillon might have more carries than Shipley but Shipley has more total touches when accounting for receptions.

First time in a long time the Eagles have issued a depth chart with a designated fullback on it.

Does Kylen Granson have an edge over Harrison Bryant for TE3? There hasn’t been a lot of separation there in camp.

Kenyon Green has been exclusively repping at left guard. He’s not in the mix to start at right guard as was previously suggested.

Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt are listed as starters but Joshua Uche did get some first-team reps over Hunt on Monday.

Thomas Booker’s had another good summer. He might be the fourth defensive tackle over Vanilla Gorilla Ty Robinson.

I wouldn’t overreact to 2025 first-round pick Jihaad Campbell being listed as a backup. Last year at this time, Quinyon Mitchell was listed behind Darius Slay and the competition of Isaiah Rodgers/Kelee Ringo. Campbell still has time to push for a starting role by Week 1.

That being said, I’ve been saying that Jeremiah Trotter Jr. isn’t going down without a fight. And he’s listed as a starter here as opposed to being in a competition with Campbell.

Is it meaningful that Adoree’ Jackson is listed before Kelee Ringo in their grouping? At this time last year, the Eagles listed “Devin White/Nakobe Dean” for a starting spot and the latter obviously won the job while White eventually got cut.

We’ll see if Christian Johnstone was brought in to legitimately compete with Charley Hughlett or if it’s just a temporary injury-related signing.

Special teams emergency backups: Jake Elliott at punter, Braden Mann at kicker, Cooper DeJean at holder, and Grant Calcaterra at long snapper.

Is DeJean going to be the Eagles’ primary punt returner? I don’t feel like they’d ideally like that. But maybe I’m wrong. Dotson’s experience there is limited; he hasn’t done it in the NFL and he had just 25 punt returns over four years at Penn State.

Also not really sure if we’ll see Dillon returning kicks. I could see it more with Shipley.

What stands out to you? Let me know in the comments below.

Eric Allen is officially a Pro Football Hall of Famer

His enshrinement is long overdue, but he’s in Canton now.

At long last, Eric Allen is in the Hall of Fame.

Over the weekend, the best cornerback in franchise history stood alongside Jared Allen, Antonio Gates and Sterling Sharpe for their official induction ceremony in Canton, OH. With more than 100 Hall of Famers sitting behind him and his sons on hand to introduce their father, Allen went on to deliver a special shout out to the team that drafted him for whom he became a star.

Eric Allen made sure to get in a Fly Eagles Fly

HOF Enshrinement on @NFLNetwork
Stream on @NFLPlus pic.twitter.com/BgISTJMG2F
— NFL (@NFL) August 2, 2025

“Thank you to the legend, Buddy Ryan, for drafting me in 1988,” Allen said. “It was an honor to wear those Kelly Greens and represent the city of brotherly love.

“Whether it was Buddy’s Boys or Bud Carson’s Gang Green, we did so much damage on the football field. All us Eagle guys, we had just an outstanding defensive football team. Whether it was Seth, the late departed Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, Byron Evans, just a tremendous football team in Philadelphia.” (quotes via NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Reuben Frank).

At 5’10” and just 185 pounds, Allen was never the biggest corner in the league. But he was renowned for his ability to cover any team’s No. 1 receiver in the Buddy Ryan/Bud Carson “46” defenses played by the Birds in the late 1980s/early 1990s. His 54 career interceptions ranks tied for 21st in NFL history, the same as contemporary and fellow Hall of Famer Darrell Green, one more than Hall of Famers Ty Law and Deion Sanders and two more than Hall of Famer Champ Bailey.

Allen was a starter from opening week of his rookie season, hauling in five INTs. In his second season, he was a first-team All-Pro with a career-high eight interceptions and his first Pro Bowl nod. In all, Allen was a second team All-Pro two times (1991, ‘93) and made six Pro Bowls in his first eight years, five of them with the Eagles. During the Birds’ scintillating come-from-behind wild card victory over the Saints in 1992, Allen capped off a tremendous comeback with his first Pick-6 in the postseason. In 1993, he finished with a league-high FOUR defensive touchdowns, including this legendary return in Week 4 against the Jets, the signature play of his career.

Back in 1993 to start the season 4-0 Eric Allen had one of the greatest interception return for a touchdown in Eagles history against the New York Jets #flyeaglesfly #throwbackthursday pic.twitter.com/0V5ZbUG5b9
— Baltazar Hernandez (@balhernandez21) June 15, 2023

Eric Allen

One of the greatest playmaking defensive backs in NFL history

Pro Football Hall of Fame,
Class of 2025#Eagles #FlyEaglesFly#Saints #Raiders #RaiderNation pic.twitter.com/9mooQ6MPiE
— Kevin Gallagher (@KevG163) August 2, 2025

His role in the Buddy Ryan-Bud Carson scheme was of vital importance, given the frequency of zero-blitzes the two legendary coaches frequently employed at opposing offenses. Ryan and Carson relied on Allen to be singled-up on an opposing team’s best receiver, often times in one-on-one coverage without safety help. His ability to allow the 46 Defense to work by playing effectively on an island helped make the Eagles’ defense of that era to remain one of the most effective and ferocious for the entirety of his time wearing green and silver.

Following the 1994 season, Allen left Philadelphia along with a number of other players from that vaunted Ryan/Carson defense in free agency, signing a deal with the New Orleans Saints, recording five interceptions and starting 16 games every season. He was later traded to the Oakland Raiders where he played the final four seasons of his career through his age-36 season, leading the league in INTs in 2000 with 3. He had 15 interceptions after turning 33 years old.

In all, Allen never finished a season without a pick in his illustrious 14-year career and had a knack for finding the end zone.

After years of coming up short, a bronze bust of the Eagles’ greatest cornerback in team history now sits in all its glory inside the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

At long last.

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 8/4/25.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

2025 NFL training camp news, buzz, fantasy football updates - ESPN
Personnel-wise, things stayed pretty much the same for the Eagles on offense. The only starter they lost to free agency was Mekhi Becton, who played very well for them at right guard after signing a one-year prove-it deal last season. Stepping in for him will be 2023 third-round draft pick Tyler Steen, who was projected to start at right guard last season before he got injured in the offseason and Becton played so well. The Eagles believe Steen is ready, just as they believed a year ago that Cam Jurgens was ready to take over for the retiring Jason Kelce at center. The Eagles’ offensive line is its own subculture, and one of the benefits of the way they’ve been able to draft is that guys get on-the-job training and get to see first-hand examples of what’s expected before they ascend to starter’s roles. It’s one thing to draft a young guy and explain to him the way it was when past franchise greats held down his position. It’s quite another to draft a young guy and let him work side-by-side with those greats so that he doesn’t need to be told what’s expected when it’s his turn to start. Jurgens made the Pro Bowl in his first year as a starter and after working alongside Kelce for two years. The hope is that Steen, who has spent the past two years working alongside the likes of Kelce, Jurgens, Johnson, Landon Dickerson, and Jordan Mailata, will benefit in the same way.

Jalen Carter says Tyler Steen is “hell of a player.” Carter thinks Steen is ready to start at RG. #Eagles
— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) August 3, 2025

Eagles 2025 training camp battle tracker - PhillyVoice
Steen had some up and down moments, but I thought there was more up than down. He was trying to block Jeremiah Trotter on the second level on a run play, but Trotter sidestepped him, and made the “tackle.” On a rep shortly thereafter, Steen got a hold of Mondon on the second level and drove him down the field, through the whistle. The Eagles also love pulling guards across the formation in the play action game and then having them set up in pass protection, kind of like offensive tackles. They can do that with Dickerson, who had college experience playing tackle, and they could do that with Mekhi Becton last year, who was formerly a tackle. For example, they pulled Becton across the formation on had him set up as a blocker in pass pro on the DeVonta Dagger. Because Steen played almost exclusively at tackle in college, he is comfortable doing that as well, and they are using him on those types of plays in practice. Anyway, Steen isn’t a perfect player, but he’s good enough, and nobody among his competition has given him much of a challenge. I’ve seen enough. Steen will be the starting RG.

Still Early - Iggles Blitz
The Eagles open the 2025 regular season a month from now. Training Camp has had eight practices, not all of them in full pads. There are still three preseason games to play and a pair of joint practices with the Browns next week. As much as we obsess on every little moment at Eagles TC, it is still early. A lot can change over the next few weeks. Good and bad. Tyler Steen has played well enough to win the starting RG job. If he were to struggle in the joint practices and then in camp after that, it could open the door for Matt Pryor to win the RG job. Steen needs to be consistent to keep his job.

Eagles Training Camp Practice Notes: Is Eli Ricks the dark horse in the cornerback competition? - BGN
Is Eli Ricks a dark horse candidate to win the starting cornerback job? He hasn’t been getting regular first-team reps with Jackson and Ringo splitting those. But the third-year defender’s having a nice summer. There’s often talk about how player development isn’t linear. In this case, Ricks showed some promise as an undrafted rookie in 2023 before underwhelming in 2024. Maybe he’s ready to rebound in Year 3. Here are the plays I wrote down Ricks’ name for on Sunday: a pass breakup on a Tanner McKee throw to Nick Muse in 7-on-7, tight coverage on Dotson where he arguably ran the route better than the receiver in 11-on-11, and three more pass breakups on McKee throws to Elijah Cooks. The last two happened in an end-of-game situation where the offense had to score with very little time left and no timeouts to work with. A leaping Ricks first broke up a fade pass to Cooks. Then he denied the pass from a scrambling McKee to Cooks, who was trying to uncover for a tiptoe grab along the right sideline in the end zone. Cooks has more often than not been a tough cover for Eagles defensive backs this summer but Ricks was able to get the better of him on Sunday. Ricks did have a rep where he got beat deep to allow a catch to Darius Cooper.

Eagles training camp report, Practice No. 8: DeVonta Smith returns, A.J. Brown sits - PHLY
Moro Ojomo, Jalyx Hunt stand out: The Eagles need to replace Milton Williams and Josh Sweat. Moro Ojomo and Jalyx Hunt have looked the part, respectively. It’s no longer noteworthy when Ojomo has a good practice. It’s happening every day. He found his way into the backfield again, and it’s common to see No. 97 in the notes. “He’s a guy that I would describe, he’s awkward — in a good way,” Landon Dickerson said of Ojomo. “Just the way he moves, his size, his arm length. He’s one of those guys we say is ‘awkward’ to block. And I think that gives him a huge advantage in this game. He’s not your stereotypical D-tackle size, like Jordan Davis or Jalen Carter. And he’s a very strong guy, he’s twitchy, he knows football. He’s doing a lot of great things. I see him coming out here every day and getting better and better.” As for Hunt, Fran Duffy noted that the second-year edge rusher looked more powerful in this practice. He used a power move — not a speed move — to win a matchup on Sunday.

Why Eagles’ defense loves when Saquon Barkley talks trash - NBCSP
Saquon Barkley is one of the best players in the NFL and he’s been reminding his defensive teammates of that during training camp. With his play and his words. During Friday’s practice — the most intense one of the summer — Barkley got a ton of touches and was in the ear of just about every Eagles player in a white jersey talking trash. “He’s not BG-level. He needs to work on that,” Reed Blankenship said with a straight face before breaking into a huge grin. “He don’t scare me at all, you know what I’m saying?” Barkley, 28, was the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2024 and had one of the greatest running back seasons ever. As he enters his second season with the Eagles, Barkley is bringing a ton of juice to practice. The entire team feeds off of it. And his defensive teammates love it.

Eagles Training Camp Updates: Jalen Carter sets the tone on defense - PE.com
“We ready,” Carter said on Sunday. “We just really worry about staying together as a team, not trying to worry about last year. We know we lost a couple guys, but that’s not gonna affect the way we treat each other.” Jordan Davis lost 26 pounds to prepare for a bigger role on the defense. Carter refers to Davis, the Eagles’ top draft pick in 2022, as his big brother. Davis hosted Carter on his recruitment visit to Georgia and has provided advice on how to transition to the NFL. “He’s getting slim. He’s running fast,” Carter said of Davis. “I really think, I don’t want to give him too much, but I think JD is faster than me. He moving fast.” Moro Ojomo was one of the league’s most productive interior linemen on a per snap basis last season with 27 QB hits and pressures while on the field for 37 percent of the team’s defensive plays. Carter saw an Ojomo highlight reel on X in the offseason and wasn’t surprised to see how disruptive the third-year player was in action. “I think this is the year he’s going to prove it,” Carter said. “All eyes are gonna be on him. He’s going to get the one-on-one rushes where he’s going to do what he did last year and it’s just going to show.”

New York Jets: WR A.J. Brown, Ole Miss (Round 2, Pick 51). Original Pick: DI Quinnen Williams, Alabama After back-to-back perfect original picks, we finally get a different selection in this redraft. And that’s no slight to Williams, who is a top-five defensive tackle in the NFL. But the Jets can’t pass on Brown here, as he’s in the running for the best wide receiver in football. The three-time Pro Bowler is both the fourth-highest-graded receiver (93.1) and the fourth-most-valuable receiver in the league since being drafted, according to PFF’s Wins Above Replacement metric.

Raiders sign TE Albert Okwuegbunam, WR Kawaan Baker - PFT
The team announced the signings of tight end Albert Okwuegbunam and wide receiver Kawaan Baker. Tight end Pat Conroy and wide receiver Kyle Philips were waived in corresponding moves. [BLG Note: Albert O and Kyle Philips are both former Eagles.]

Dan Quinn: “We love Terry. Really glad he’s here. Hopefully he’s out practicing soon.” - Hogs Haven
Dan Quinn talked to the media before today’s training camp practices. The big news was WR Terry McLaurin requesting a trade amid his contract dispute with the Washington Commanders. Quinn said they love Terry, hopefully he’s practicing soon, and he understands the business. McLaurin told him the request was coming, and he continues to be in the building and out with the fans after practices.

Despite the contract frustrations, the Cowboys front office doesn’t let talented players get away - Blogging The Boys
All of these moves were heavily criticized in real time. All five of these guys play the “money five” premium positions in the NFL, and in most cases, the team had a better option in their back pocket. Prescott, Lamb, and soon Parsons will make up the Cowboys’ top three paid players, and they were all factors when the team decided to move on from these other guys. When criticizing the front office, we should try to remember that the Cowboys aren’t in the business of letting their stars get away. When was the last time you were genuinely upset about a player leaving, and how long did you stay upset? But more than that, we should also take comfort in the fact that these drama-filled contract negotiations take place because the Cowboys keep drafting star talent. That’s a good problem to have. [BLG Note: Lol.]

Giants have league’s worst coach/coordinator combo — ESPN - Big Blue View
Still, Daboll did win Coach of the Year in 2022 when he and his staff were widely lauded for getting a team to the playoffs and winning a game when most figured the year would be something akin to, oh, 3-14. I have my disagreements with Daboll, but I can’t agree that he tops the worst staff in the league. Kafka has been a hot name on the head-coaching circuit for three years, and has coached at both the East-West Shrine and Senior Bowls. Granted, he has not gotten a head-coaching job, but if he wasn’t highly thought of he wouldn’t be getting annual interviews. Solak was also complementary toward Bowen, something that I am guessing surprised some Giants fans. With all of that to consider, it’s hard for me to believe Solak can “feel pretty good” about putting the Giants at the bottom of this list.

Women’s flag football coming to Division I school in California - SB Nation
Another Division I school is pursuing the addition of women’s flag football. In a letter to the campus community published on Friday, Cal Poly athletic director Don Oberhelman said the school could add women’s flag football as a varsity sport as early as 2027. Cal Poly is the sixth Division I school at the NCAA level to announce its intentions of starting a women’s flag football team. The members of the Big West follow Alabama State, Long Island, Mercyhurst, Mount St. Mary’s, and UT Arlington.

Eagles Training Camp Practice Notes: Is Eli Ricks the dark horse in the cornerback competition?

Observations from the NovaCare Complex.

Today marked the eighth Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice ahead of the 2025 NFL season. The padded session lasted for about one hour and 40 minutes. Here’s what I observed at the NovaCare Complex.

EAGLES PRACTICE NOTES

JALEN HURTS UPDATE: Hurts was solid yet unspectacular. He hit a crossing DeVonta Smith in stride for a nice gain. He had another good ball to Dallas Goedert. Hurts had a chance to make the play of the day by hitting Jahan Dotson for a deep touchdown. The wide receiver was comfortably open for an over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone but Hurts overthrew him. The quarterback wasn’t helped by the wind being at his back; the upright streamers and a big flag nearby were blowing in the same direction the ball was thrown. Still waiting to see another hot stretch from Hurts like he had early in camp.

EAGLES INJURY REPORT: Bunch of new updates.

DID NOT PRACTICE

LB Zack Baun (back contusion)
WR A.J. Brown (hamstring)
S Lewis Cine (hamstring)
RB Montrell Johnson Jr. (hamstring)
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. (knee)
CB Mac McWilliams (quad)
LB Ben VanSumeren (ankle)

Baun has missed four straight practices.

Marshall has missed three straight practices.

McWilliams and BVS have missed two straight practices.

Brown is a new addition to the injury report. Obviously a big one to monitor. UPDATE: Here’s some encouraging insight.

Good news for the Eagles: NFL insider Mike Garafolo downplays A.J. Brown’s hamstring injury. pic.twitter.com/um9oYjwjS3
— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) August 3, 2025

Cine and Johnson Jr. are also newly injured.

LIMITED PARTICIPATION

LB Jihaad Campbell (shoulder)
LS Charley Hughlett (neck)
TE E.J. Jenkins (hamstring)
S Andrew Mukuba (shoulder)
WR DeVonta Smith (back tightness)
LB Nolan Smith (concussion)

DeVonta took part in some team drills in his first day back after missing four practices.

Nolan was limited to position drills. He’s ramping up after missing three practices.

Campbell doesn’t appear to be limited despite being listed as such.

Mukuba was limited for the second practice in a row. Still not participating in team drills.

Hughlett is a new addition. Something to keep an eye on ahead of the first preseason game on Thursday. UPDATE: The Eagles are reportedly bringing in a new long snapper.

Report: Eagles sign another long snapperhttps://t.co/vNOdNqne9K
— Brandon Lee Gowton (@BrandonGowton) August 3, 2025

Jenkins was upgraded to limited after missing the last two practices.

OTHER INJURY NEWS

Jalen Carter (shoulder), Landon Dickerson (ribs), and Cam Jurgens (back) were removed from the injury report.

POSITION BATTLE UPDATE — CORNERBACK: Adoree’ Jackson was first up with the first-team defense on Sunday. That makes five days when Jackson has been up first and three days for Ringo. Jackson had good coverage on DeVonta Smith in 7-on-7 to force Hurts off that read. Jackson would’ve allowed a deep touchdown to Dotson if not for a Hurts overthrow. Ringo broke up a Hurts pass to Goedert.

Speaking of Darius Cooper, he’s intriguing. Did you realize that he led all NCAA wide receivers at any level (Division I FBS, Division I FBS, Division II, Division III) in receiving yards at Tarleton State last year? He had 1,449, which is 67 more than second-place Nick Nash (who is 26 years old) and 133 more than third-place Tetairoa McMillan (who was the No. 8 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft). Cooper played two more games than those players ... but he saw 46 fewer targets than Nash and five fewer than McMillan. Cooper only ranked tied for the 15th most targets with 125 (8.9 per game). Cooper’s production wasn’t just about pure volume; he was pretty efficient with 19.1 yards per reception and 14 touchdowns. Only two out of 744 qualifying players ranked above him in yards per route run. On Sunday, Cooper beat Ricks to make an over-the-shoulder catch down the right sideline. He made some other catches and also showed some juice on a kick return. As it currently stands, I don’t think Cooper makes the roster. But it’ll be interesting to watch him in the preseason. He’s at least done enough to warrant a practice squad spot.

Jihaad Campbell stood out for being in position to bump Will Shipley immediately after a short reception. The rookie also got his hands on a ball to break up a dump off to Ainias Smith.

With feel-good personalities like Brandon Graham and Darius Slay gone, the Eagles will look to emerging leaders to bring some levity to the locker room (helps to break up the monotony of the daily grind). Jordan Mailata and Jordan Davis are top candidates in this regard. There was a moment during Sunday’s practice where Hurts took a bump as a runner (he remained upright). It was a defender who touched him, however. It was Goedert, who had been pushed by Davis. After the play, Mailata ran up to Davis and pretended to be mad at him and throw punches at him. Davis played into the fun by acting like he was actually getting hit. Davis was also messing around during Jalen Carter’s media availability after practice:

Said it on Friday and I’ll say it again: Saquon Barkley looks really good. If there’s going to be a player who defies historical precedent and runs for 2,000 yards again, I wouldn’t count him out. He looks primed for another big year.

Two young players who’ve stood out in OL vs. DL 1-on-1 drills this summer: rookie tackle Myles Hinton and second-year defensive tackle Gabe Hall. Hinton will make the roster. Hall has a chance.

Johnny Wilson has disappointed as a pass-catcher but you can see the value he has a big-bodied blocker. He helped to seal off Adoree’ Jackson a running play to the edge.

Andre’ Sam broke up a McKee throw to Kylen Granson in the end zone. The quarterback tried to fit it in a tight window. The tight end had a chance at making a really good catch but the Eagles’ second-year safety won out.

Tristin McCollum knocked down a McKee throw to Granson along the right sideline. Later, McCollum dropped what would’ve been a game-winning interception (in this simulated situation) thrown right at him by Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

McKee had multiple passes get knocked down but he also had some good completions as well. Such as one to a tightly covered Nick Muse on a curl route. Or later in practice when he hit Granson along the right sideline to allow the tight end to get out of bounds and the offense to set up in goal-to-go.

Using a one-handed strike, Josh Uche pancaked second-team left tackle Kendall Lamm to notch a “sack.” Pretty impressive. Later, Uche had a bad offside penalty.

ShunDerrick Powell had another long run. We’ll see if these flashes carry over to preseason football.

DTR ultimately led the third-team offense to a touchdown by hitting Harrison Bryant in the middle of the end zone. The two-point try to tie the game was unsuccessful, however, with him throwing a pick to a leaping Dallas Gant to end practice.

Kyle McCord didn’t get many, if any, 11-on-11 reps. But we’ll probably see a lot of him in the preseason games.

First-team kickoff coverage unit during special teams drills (from left to right): Cooper DeJean, Will Shipley, Ochaun Mathis, Sydney Brown, Tristin McCollum, Kyle Granson, Patrick Johnson, Andre’ Sam, Avery Williams, and Kelee Ringo. And then Jake Elliott doing the kicking.

Kick returner pairings, in order: Darius Cooper and Keilan Robinson, Taylor Morin and ShunDerrick Powell, Giles Jackson and Keilan Robinson, Taylor Morin and Darius Cooper. The odds are against these any of these players making the roster.

UP NEXT: The Eagles are back at practice on Monday morning starting at 10:00 AM Eastern. You can find more of the Eagles’ training camp schedule by clicking here.

Eagles sign another long snapper

Philadelphia’s veteran LS is currently banged up.

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing long snapper Christian Johnstone, according to a report from Aaron Wilson.

This development is likely related to Charley Hughlett popping up on today’s training camp injury report. The 35-year-old veteran was listed as limited due to a neck injury.

Given that the Eagles play their first preseason game on Thursday night (7:30 PM versus the Cincinnati Bengals), the team is seemingly preparing for the possibility that Hughlett can’t play. If that’s the case, they’ll need someone to be able to handle long snapper duties.

Enter Johnstone, who did not get picked in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Appalachian State alumnus did get a rookie minicamp tryout with the Denver Broncos back in May. That’s his only NFL experience up until now.

The guess here is that Johnstone will be around until Hughlett is healthy again. If Hughlett’s injury was considered to be a serious issue, the Eagles probably would have signed a more experienced long snapper. On that note, two-time Eagles Super Bowl champion Rick Lovato is still a free agent.

<s>The corresponding move to make room for Johnstone on the Eagles’ roster is currently unclear. Updates to come.</s> UPDATE: The Eagles officially signed Johnstone and waived undrafted rookie defensive back B.J. Mayes.

Christian Johnstone is a LS prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 6.04 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 87 out of 217 LS from 1987 to 2025.https://t.co/tgaOGIGX6l pic.twitter.com/ALiIDbyXha
— RAS.football (@MathBomb) April 7, 2025
