UFC 146: Junior Dos Santos Discusses Bout With Frank Mir, Rematch With Cain Velasquez

UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos was a happy man after stopping challenger Frank Mir in the second round of their UFC 146 main event bout. He did an interview with Ariel Helwani for Fuel TV draped in a Brazilian flag, and talked about his strategy in the Mir bout and what could be next for him. He actually called a second round knockout before the bout, and his prediction came true. Here's how he went about it:

My gameplan was to keep the distance in the first round, to make him a little bit tired in the first round. And in the second round, come to knock him out. And that works!

He cleared up the fact that he is a brown belt in BJJ, not a black belt as Dana White and other people were saying. He then went on to talk about Frank Mir's somewhat-surprising chin:

Yeah, that surprised me. He can take a punch man. My hand is, I'm feeling pain in my hands. He survived a little bit. But not too much!

And he gave his thoughts on a rematch with former champion Cain Velasquez, who he knocked out last November to claim the title:

I don't know, if the UFC wants to see that fight again, let's do it. Cain Velasquez surprised a lot, you know, Bigfoot (Antonio Silva) is a really tough fighter, you know, I train with him, he's very strong. But Cain Velasquez came in with a good strategy and won the fight. So if the UFC wants to see that fight again, let's do it.

UFC 146 Results Recap: Glover Teixeira Blasts Away Kyle Kingsbury

Three long years after his intended move to the U.S. and to the employment of Zuffa, Glover Teixeira made his big stage debut at UFC 146 - and what a debut it was. Teixeira promptly broke through the defenses of Kyle Kingsbury in the stand-up, knocked him down quickly and then submitted him with a very tight arm triangle from the S-mount position.

Teixeira moves to 18-2 and has not lost since 2005. Granted, his level of competition has not been particularly good at all, but only two of his eighteen wins have been by decision. He has destroyed everyone put in front of him in the last several years and with his move to the UFC, Glover can finally test himself against the best.

Kingsbury walks away with an 11-4 record. He is still 4-3 in the UFC and has received two bonuses for his efforts previously. Taking the bout with Teixeira showed his courage and belief in his own abilities and Kingsbury actually moved to engage on the feet and never ran away from the punches that were landing. It was a valiant attempt, but unfortunately, Kingsbury was unable to put up much of a fight.

What was the high spot of this fight?

The fight took less than two minutes and essentially all of it could go right into Glover's highlight reel. Watching Glover land hook after uppercut after hook after uppercut on Kingsbury until the knockdown was awe-inspiring.

Where do these guys go from here?

To be honest, Kingsbury probably faces a "win or get cut" situation in his next bout. He's had two Fight of the Night performances in his seven UFC appearances, but the two straight losses to Stephan Bonnar and Glover means that he needs a win or a particularly memorable performance to stay in the promotion. Fighting the loser of Anthony Perosh and Ryan Jimmo makes sense for a Kingsbury resurgence.

In an ideal world, Glover Teixeira gets jumped right into the main card as to build the "Wow, this guy can beat anybody" bandwagon into a fever pitch worthy of a title shot. However, with the dearth of ranked LHWs in the UFC, he probably has to leapfrog into fighting someone several levels above Kingsbury. The winner of the match between Forrest Griffin and Tito Ortiz makes some sense for him, but maybe not as much for them. This is going to be tricky matchmaking and I cannot really hazard a guess as to which big name will actually agree to fight Teixeira.

Watch it now, later or never?

Now. This probably should be your first fight to watch for UFC 146. Pay attention to the cornermen for Glover too - seeing Chuck Liddell, John Hackleman, Pedro Rizzo and Marco Ruas was a blast from the past.

UFC Welterweight Dan Hardy came into his bout against Duane "Bang" Ludwig at UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir under a cloud. Four straight losses in the Octagon had him under the gun. Many fighters are cut by the promotion after two straight losses, most after three, only a select handful of proven, popular veterans get a fifth chance. Hardy was in that select handful but going up against Ludwig, the owner of one of the quickest KO wins in UFC history, he had to fear for his UFC career.

UFC 146 Results: Dan Hardy defeats Duane Ludwig via TKO at 3:51 of the first round.

Those nerves were banished in less than four minutes when Hardy caught Ludwig with a beautifully set up stutter step left hook and followed up with a string of brutal elbows to the downed Ludwig. Those elbows even had UFC president Dana White tweeting that he hated to see the "late" shots.

Hardy was on the brink of joining former WEC champ Steve Cantwell as the only fighters to have 5 straight losses in the Octagon, but his performance last night has given the brash Brit a new lease on life.

It's already been a busy combat sports weekend, with Bellator, UFC, and Glory representing kickboxing, but we're not done yet. Join us here at Bloody Elbow today to discuss all the action as K-1 returns for K-1 Rising 2012 in Madrid, Spain. Featuring the opening round of the 2012 K-1 World MAX Grand Prix along with Heavyweight fights from Badr Hari, Mirko Cro Cop, and Daniel Ghita, this is a great all-around card.

The show is available as a live stream on K-1's UStream channel (K1GlobalTV) and begins today at 12:15 p.m. ET / 9:15 a.m. PT. There is a bit of confusion over that start time though, as they have opening fights set to start at that time, and an "opening ceremony" scheduled for roughly two hours later, so we'll have to see what happens.

UFC 146: Dana White Basically Confirms Junior Dos Santos Vs. Cain Velasquez 2

UFC president Dana White did an interview with MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani for Fuel TV after the post-fight press conference last night, and he gave us a glimpse at what's next for the two biggest winners from last night's UFC 146 event. While he was a bit coy about it at the PC, he came out in this interview and basically confirmed a second bout between UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez was on tap:

Yeah, that's what's next. And not only did he (Cain) look good, he looked lean. Really lean.

The two men first met at UFC on Fox 1 last November, where Dos Santos knocked Velasquez out in just 64 seconds to claim the title. Both men won their UFC 146 bouts last night in dominant fashion and without another surefire challenger in place, they'll go with the rematch. Dana explained what the line of thinking was in regards to giving him another shot with just one win since their last bout:

Well he was undefeated. He was an undefeated champion. He wins a fight, and he gets another shot at Junior.

UFC 146 Results: Glover Teixeira Fulfills Expectations Against Kyle Kingsbury

It's been a long long road to the Octagon for Glover Teixeira who smushed Kyle Kingsbury in his UFC debut last night at UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Teixeria, a 32-year-old Brazilian with an 18-2 record that includes 11 knock outs, is someone the UFC has wanted since 2007. Unfortunately some stubborn visa problems kept Teixeira out of the UFC.

Teixiera first came to the attention of fans when one of his early KO victims, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou went on a huge run in Japan's Pride Fighting Championships and came to the UFC on a huge wave of hype. When fans and UFC matchmaker heard that Teixeira trained with the same teams as UFC champs Chuck Liddell, Marco Ruas and Pedro Rizzo they were even more intrigued.

Unfortunately bureaucrats are stubborn things. Teixeira had to stay in Brazil for year after year, quietly racking up wins on the Brazilian circuit.

When he got his chance against UFC veteran Kyle Kingsbury, Teixeira made the most of it. He beat up Kingsbury badly on the feet, hurt him on the ground and immediately capitalized with a fight-ending arm triangle choke when the opportunity presented itself.

The rest of the UFC's Light Heavyweight division better watch out. The paper-pushers at the INS can't protect you anymore. Glover Teixeira is here and he's looking to make up for lost time.

UFC 146 Results: C.B. Dollaway Puts Mayhem Miller's UFC Career To Sleep

UFC Middleweight Jason "Mayhem" Miller came into UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir under a cloud only to get buried by C.B. Dollaway who smothered Miller from the top position. Miller, the host of MTV's Bully Beatdown, is probably the best-known 0-3 fighter in UFC history.

UFC President Dana White has made it clear that Miller won't get the chance to improve his record with the promotion either.

Although his overall MMA record is a more than respectable 23-9, Miller has struggled in the Octagon. He lost to future Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in a one-sided bout back in 2005. Half a decade later he again performed very badly against Michael Bisping in his first UFC fight in six years after coaching against Bisping on The Ultimate Fighter. Mayhem's performance in that fight was bashed by UFC president Dana White.

Mayhem and White have never really gotten along. Miller was one of the UFC's most outspoken and high profile critic back when fighters had competing promotions to work for. Ironically it was Mayhem's actions at Strikeforce's last show on CBS that were blamed for getting the UFC's biggest competitor off network television. Miller went into the cage after a Jake Shields - Dan Henderson bout and challenged Shields to a rematch. When Shield's entire crew -- including the volatile Nick Diaz and his brother Nate Diaz -- responded by jumping Mayhem on live television, the ensuing hoo ha got MMA kicked off CBS. The poor ratings didn't help either.

Mayhem may very well have been fighting hurt last night against Dollaway. He favored his wrapped left knee throughout the bout. UFC announcer Joe Rogan was certainly not shy about declaring that Miller's knee was hurt throughout the bout.

Either way it was another bad night in the Octagon for Mayhem Miller and if there's one thing Dana White and UFC matchmaker Joe Silva do not like it's a high profile fighter who underperforms. They love to cut fighters who built a big rep outside the UFC because it shows that "those other guys" can't hang in the "real show."

And sure enough White took to the podium at the post-fight press conference complaining about "some crazy s*** happening backstage" that forced him to cut Miller from the promotion. Since no one is providing any details about what that "crazy s***" was, it's impossible to judge the validity of that decision.

As for Dollaway, he picked up the win he had to have but he didn't make many fans.

Here's how Bloody Elbow saw the action from the only round of the Nelson vs. Herman fight going down:

Herman with a knee to the body. He's trying to keep the fight at a distance and then...boom. Roy Nelson lands a big right hand and Herman crumbles and it's over. Nelson brought that punch from his back pocket. Herman was out, he is trying to argue that he was fine, but he was OUT. Roy Nelson wins by TKO (punch), 0:51 of round 1.
