High marks for Tampa Bay’s signal caller.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield earned the No. 50 spot on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2025, as voted by his peers, marking a significant milestone in his resurgent career. The ranking, revealed Monday morning, reflects Mayfield’s standout 2024 season, where he led the Buccaneers to a 9-8 record and a playoff berth.

Top 100 Players of 2025:@Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield checks in at No. 50! @NFLFilms pic.twitter.com/xr2ebkixfz
— NFL (@NFL) August 4, 2025

Mayfield, 30, threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, showcasing improved decision-making and leadership. His performance earned him his first Pro Bowl nod and solidified his role as Tampa Bay’s franchise quarterback after signing a three-year, $100 million extension.

“Yeah, Baker is a competitor, man,” said San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in the video above. “He’s one of those guys that you know any time he’s on the field, he’s gonna elevate everybody else’s game around him and make some crazy plays.”

The NFL Top 100, compiled annually, highlights the league’s elite based on player votes. Mayfield’s rise from an unranked position last year underscores his redemption arc after bouncing between teams earlier in his career.

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield ‘day-to-day’ after missing Friday’s practice

Photo by Cliff Welch/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The team is taking a cautious approach.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield missed practice on Day 8 of the 2025 training camp due to a contusion on his throwing hand sustained during Thursday’s session. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Mayfield underwent precautionary scans, ruling out a more severe injury, and is currently day-to-day.

Head coach Todd Bowles was asked about the status of his star quarterback following Friday’s practice session.

“He’s got a sore hand. We gave him the day off. He’s day-to-day. We’re not worried about it,” said Bowles. It’s just been sore the past few days. It’s an accumulation of days and we just thought we’d give him a day off.”

Despite completing Thursday’s practice, the team opted for caution, thinning an already strained quarterback room with Michael Pratt also out due to a back injury. Backup quarterbacks Kyle Trask and Connor Bazelak took the reps on Friday, with Trask showing improved chemistry with receiver Mike Evans.

“It’s probably the best he’s looked since we’ve been in [training] camp,” Bowles said of Trask. “It was one of his better days. He made quicker decisions. He got the ball out of his hands. He did some good things. I probably have to see the tape to see the rest of it.”

The Buccaneers, aiming for a deep playoff run in 2025, are hopeful Mayfield’s absence is brief, given his pivotal role in their NFC South title aspirations. Fans eagerly await updates as Mayfield’s recovery will be crucial for Tampa Bay’s high-powered offense.

In the meantime, the team may seek a veteran arm to bolster the roster temporarily.

Falcons bringing in former Buccaneer for a visit

Is Jordan Whitehead going to the Falcons?

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Jordan Whitehead may soon be suiting up against the team that drafted him. Selected in fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the safety out of Pitt went on to play 59 games for the Buccaneers from 2018-2021, accumulating 292 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and five interceptions. Whitehead may not have been a star player, but he was a notable starter on the team’s defense in 2020, during their dominant playoff run— Where he forced two fumbles and subsequent Super Bowl championship.

Whitehead just finished his second stint with the team in 2024. Jason Licht and co. re-made their former safety duo of Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jordan Whitehead hoping the sequel would recapture some of the original's magic, however, Whitehead’s return to Tampa was far from a return to glory. Playing in just 12 games, the fewest in his career, the injury-laden season was complimented by a lack of big plays when the safety was on the field— Whitehead failed to record a single sack or takeaway a year ago. When it became clear the team was going to be moving on from him this offseason, many fans wouldn’t have given it a second thought. He is a former fourth-round pick who was a quality starter for a few seasons with the team, however, was never a focal point of Todd Bowles’ defense, that had been brought back to try and rekindle past grandeur but could not.

Wednesday’s news may have some of those same fans turning their heads with a side eye towards their rival to the north.

Veteran S Jordan Whitehead is visiting the #Falcons today, source says. The former #Buccaneers starter, who was injured in a car accident in January, recently received full medical clearance and is exploring his next opportunity. pic.twitter.com/QN6gJMhx01
— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) July 30, 2025

The Atlanta Falcons, the team that has been by far the largest thorn in Tampa’s side over the past few seasons appears to be interested in Whitehead’s services. The Falcons have brought Whitehead in for a visit and would have themselves quite a nice trio of safeties, should they decide to add Whitehead to the fold. The issue that Jordan Whitehead in an Atlanta Falcons uniform presents to the Buccaneers quickly becomes far greater than just his ability to help a divisional rival win games or that he will tackling Buccaneers rather teams that play the Buccaneers.

Whitehead has been in the league seven years. Five of those seven seasons have been spent in Tampa Bay and four of those five have been played underneath Todd Bowles, as both a coordinator and as a head coach. Jordan Whitehead will be leaving Tampa Bay with an intimate knowledge of Todd Bowles, the players on his defense, as well as the schemes and strategies he likes to deploy. In what has consistently been a tight division race, the Buccaneers have already had their hands full with Atlanta in recent contests. Any added advantage for Tampa’s stiffest competition could be enough to tip the scales in favor of a new NFC South champion.
