Wyoming's Robert Herron and Marqueston Huff Make Positive Impressions at the NFL Combine

Two Wyoming stars solidify their positions in getting drafted in this years NFL Draft with good NFL Combine performances.

Wyoming was represented this past weekend at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana by two departing stars in wide receiver Robert Herron and defensive back Marqueston Huff. Both players put up up good numbers in Indy but hope to improve on those marks on March 13th during Wyoming's Pro-Day, where they will be joined by star quarterback Brett Smith.

The 5'9", 193-pound Herron finished the weekend with quality testing numbers but still room for improvement going forth. He performed quite well in the bench press with 18 repetitions of 225-pounds to put him ninth amongst all wide receivers at the combine. He followed that up with a 4.48 second forty-yard-dash that is quite respectable (good for 17th place) but a number he hopes to lower this coming Pro-Day. There was a feeling that Herron could run as low as the 4.3's in the forty. His other testing numbers followed with a 35.5 inch vertical jump, a broad jump of 125 inches (10 feet 5 inches), a three cone of 6.84 seconds and finally a 20-yard-shuttle time of 4.27 seconds.

One things to remember about Herron is the fact his 4.48 forty may be a good time but he has the ability to play even faster on the field with his ability to get off the line of scrimmage very quickly and in and out of his breaks quickly. Robert was able to show those skills in drills after all the testing was done.

As for Huff, the 5'11", 196-pounds free saftey/cornerback, he put up very similar numbers to Herron in many different testing categories. He had 15 repetitions of 225-pounds in the bench press, a 4.49 second forty-yard-dash which put him 13th among all secondary participants, a vertical jump of 35.5 inches which tied him with Herron, a broad jump of 118 inches (9 feet 10 inches), a three cone of 7.26 seconds and lastly a 20-yard-shuttle of 4.19 seconds to round out his testing.

Most franchises are looking at Huff as a free safety prospect but there is still the possibility he could end up at cornerback. With so many teams preferring bigger corners to perform man press coverage, Huff could still see time out on the edges. With that said, his ability to cover and his more than adequate size makes him a interesting free safety prospect as well in the pass happy NFL. Having played both positions a Wyoming is a definite plus in Huff's favor entering the NFL.

Both Herron and Huff are expected to be taken in the 4th to 5th round area but there is still a possibility that Herron could sneak into the second day of the draft in the 3rd round. Herron unfortunately is a victim of a extremely talented and deep wide receiver class. Both prospects along with Smith have the opportunity to raise their stock further with big performances at Wyoming's Pro-Day even though teams are getting closer to setting their draft boards.

Not only do the NFL hopefuls still have their Pro-Day to look forward to but team visits and individual testing/work-outs to be done before the NFL Draft, which will take place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City on May 8th-10th.

2014 Wyoming Football Schedule Announced

It is now safe to start booking hotel rooms and plane tickets.

We're still a month away from Spring football starting up. Luckily there was some exciting news today as the Mountain West announced their 2014 football schedule. Wyoming fans already knew the four non-conference games that were scheduled. Now the rest of the puzzle has been put together. With a road game at Hawaii, Wyoming had the option of scheduling a 13th home game. They opted for a second bye week instead of an extra home game. Probably a smart move with so many changes taking place during the off season.

Let's see how things will play out for the Pokes this year. TV broadcast and kickoff times will be announced at a later date. There is also the possibility that a game may be moved from Saturday to Friday or Thursday depending on TV needs.

2014 Wyoming Football Schedule
Sat., Aug. 30 - MONTANA
Sat., Sept. 6 - AIR FORCE*
Sat., Sept. 13 - at Oregon
Sat., Sept. 20 - FLORIDA ATLANTIC
Sat., Sept. 27 - at Michigan State
Sat., Oct. 4 - OPEN
Sat., Oct. 11 - at Hawai'i*
Sat., Oct. 18 - SAN JOSE STATE*
Sat., Oct. 25 - at Colorado State*
Sat., Nov. 1 - at Fresno State*
Sat., Nov. 8 - UTAH STATE*
Sat., Nov. 15 - OPEN
Sat., Nov. 22 - BOISE STATE*
Sat., Nov. 29 - at New Mexico*
Sat., Dec. 6 - Mountain West Championship Game+

The conference schedule starts off quite early with the Cowboys hosting Air Force on September 6th. That will be a good transition game to have between Montana and Oregon. The Falcons finished just 2-10 last year in a down year.

The bye week on October 4th comes at a perfect spot, as it breaks up the Cowboys two longest road trips (Michigan State and Hawaii). I've been waiting months for the Hawaii date to be announced as this game will be my excuse to go visit the islands again. There is a brutal stretch of a trip to Fresno State followed by home games with Utah State and Boise State highlight November. The bye week on the 15th is a nice bonus. Let's just hope that the final game of the year against New Mexico has some importance for the Cowboys.

YOUR TURN:

Which games are key for the Cowboys? Is a bowl game a possibility in Bohl's first year?

Cowboys Beat Bulldogs, Lose Nance

Gutsy victory overshadowed by loss of top player.

The Wyoming Cowboys three game winning streak should have been a celebration. Instead most players and fans left Arena-Auditorium with a lump in their stomach. That was due to Larry Nance Jr. collapsing on the court with 15 minutes left in the game. Nance lay on the ground clutching his right knee and immediately called for help from the Wyoming bench. According to the radio broadcast Nance yelled "Oh my god" when suffering the injury.

The Cowboys knocked off a Fresno State team that was riding a five game winning streak. The Cowboys won 72-66 and improved to 17-9 (8-5 MW). The Bulldogs went on a 7-2 run after Nance left the game, yet the Pokes fought back and gutted out the victory. It is hard to imagine how many victories Wyoming will be able to achieve without their star player. Nance currently leads the team in points, rebounds, blocks and steals.

"As I tried to remind Larry [Nance Jr.] and our team, he's going to be back in four to five months even if it does prove to be a severe injury," UW head coach Larry Shyatt said. "But this is something he can catapult from, and we can catapult from. We're going to overcome. Larry's going to overcome this, and we're going to have a cause greater than anybody else. We have to look a little deeper. We never understand why at times like this, but we can have a cause greater than ourselves now -- the Larry Nance cause."

Nance will have an MRI on Wednesday, after the game Larry Shyatt was expecting him to be out four to five months. That is likely a best case scenario, depending on what all was torn - it may be longer. There is never a good time for a major injury like this to your star player. However, Wyoming was literally playing it's best basketball of the season after knocking off #5 San Diego State last week. Their defense held San Jose State to just nine points in the second half last Saturday. The Cowboys were going to be one of the most dangerous teams in the Mountain West Conference tournament next month. Now they'll likely be struggling to reach 20 wins.

Perhaps that is being too negative, still it is hard to see how many games Wyoming would have won without Nance this year. There is plenty of talent on the team and players take turns stepping up. Nathan Sobey had a career high 26 points tonight. Riley Grabau is one of the best free throw shooters in the country at 90%. He and Granberry are both shooting over 40% from behind the arc. Derek Cooke is really improving on his offensive game. Josh Adams is shooting 49% from the field and leads the team in assists.

The physical play of teams like New Mexico and UNLV will give Wyoming fits. It will be tough to guard the paint without Nance. The Cowboys are already awful at offensive rebounding, they've been out rebounded 135-270 so far this year. Don't expect that stat to improve with Nance gone.

I would imagine Charles Hankerson will get the starting nod in the lineup in place on Nance. The Alabama transfer has shown some nice flashes off the bench this year. Now is his chance to step up and show why he was one of the top recruits in the nation coming out of high school.

Best wishes go out to Larry. He is not only a heck of a basketball player, he is also a role model and ambassador for the University of Wyoming. We hope to see him back on the court as soon as possible.

2014 Wyoming Recruiting Class Q&A

The Cowboy Altitude crew goes in-depth on newest members of the Wyoming football team.

We wanted to provide a deeper look into the 2014 recruiting class. So ChiefMojo and I got together to answer a few questions on the class. Let us know what you think of our answers and feel free to share your own thoughts.

ENJOY!

Player most likely to contribute in 2014:

Chief Mojo: At this moment I would think Aaron Young probably holds that distinction. With the departure of Brett Smith to the NFL and Jason Thompson to transfer, there is no returning starter at quarterback. Young has the advantage over the others due to the fact he has college experience and is coming from a Pro-Style offense. It will be interesting to see how the two returning quarterbacks on roster (Thornton/Kirkegaard) function from under center this coming Spring.

The Road: Quarterback will have plenty of competition as you mentioned. I feel that with the new offense, the tight end position will be very competitive as well. I can see Jacob Hollister having a big leg up in the competition for a starting spot by already enrolling. That extra time to learn the offense and work with the strength and conditioning program will be huge. Hollister is 6'4 230 lbs and has great hands since he was a quarterback in high school.

Player with the biggest impact after 4 or 5 years:

Chief Mojo: This is a tough one to pick as we don't know how players will develop over the next couple of years. Not to mention some positions are easier to showcase than others.

I think we have some prospects in this recruiting class that could turn into tremendous players down the road but there is one player who I think can be a poster child for Wyoming Cowboy football under Coach Bohl. That player in my opinion is La Habra, California linebacker Alex Bush. He plays with a nasty demeanor but also has good athletic ability and ball skills.

The Road: While Jacob Hollister will likely have the biggest impact in 2014, I see the high school tight ends eventually having a bigger impact on the program. With the size and frame of Grant Lewis and Brinkley Jolly, I expect big things from down the road. They are low on experience right now, they will big dangerous weapons in just a couple years.

Most under-rated recruit:

Chief Mojo: With a class made up of so many under the radar type signees, it is tough to pick just one player. I'm going to go with St. Joseph (Central) Missouri tight end Tyree Mayfield. I think Mayfield is one of those kids that has the athletic ability to be a big-time pass catching threat for the Cowboys after some physical development. With the emergence of the hybrid tight end in college and pro game, I think Mayfield is that type of player. You can tell he was a good basketball player and someone that could probably play numerous positions on both sides of the ball.
The Road: I think a ton of people are sleeping on RB Nico Evans. With the switch to a pro style offense, everyone is projecting a running game that is loaded with 220 lb running backs. Many fans seem bewildered that Wyoming would offer a 5'9 177lb running back. I don't expect that Evans that will be the primary back in Bohl's system, I do believe that he will be a change of pace runner that will give the offense an extra dimension. Evans' greatest asset are his hips and feet, he is able to adjust directions very quickly and stay at top speed. He is able to make defenders miss easily and open up big gains. Take a fresh look at his highlights and I believe you'll be impressed. This could end up being the second coming of the "Thunder and Lightning" days from the mid 90's.

Recruit that best fits the "Cowboy Tough" persona:

Chief Mojo: I know I have brought him up earlier, but Alex Bush fits that bill most definitely. Since I used him once already, I'll bring up another name that I think screams "Cowboy Tough".

I truly believe Highland Ranch (Valor Christian) Colorado offensive guard Ryan Cummings is that blue collar tough SOB in the trenches. With the new staff moving towards more of a power run game, I think Cummings has the make-up to be a mainstay along the offensive line. Teams that line up and play smash mouth football generally have offensive lineman that are road graders. That would definitely give off the perception of "Cowboy Tough".

The Road: This fall was tough for fans and players. There was one recruit who not effected by all the changes. He stayed very positive about the program, and couldn't wait to get to Laramie. OL Richard Bettencourt attended the Boise State game this fall with family all decked out in Wyoming gear. In December he spent a lot of time chatting with other Wyoming recruits, several of them ended up committing. Bettencourt loves the outdoors and embraces life in Laramie. He graduated in January in order to get a start on his college career.

Most versatile recruit in this class:

Chief Mojo: There are multiple prospects on the defensive side of the ball that I could pick here. With that said, I will go with Tampa (Robinson) Florida corner back Robert Priester. Priester is one of those dynamic prospects that could succeed on either side of the ball. He could be a wide receiver, return man or corner back. It looks like the staff is looking at him mostly as a corner/nickel back/return man.

The Road: With the size and speed of Alex Bush, I can see him playing either an inside or outside linebacker position. Since he is currently the only linebacker in this class, it is nice to have some versatility. His ferocious play will make him an impact player where ever he is able to get on the field. Even though there are plenty of senior linebackers, Bush could have the opportunity to contribute right away on special teams.

Is WR Josh Wade A Late Addition To The 2014 Wyoming Recruiting Class?

Twitter mystery continues.

During Coach Bohl's press conference this afternoon he noted they didn't add any wide receivers since it was already a position of depth. With the switch from the spread offense and only losing a couple of seniors, Wyoming is still loaded at WR.

An hour before that statement by Bohl, it was reported on Twitter that WR Josh Wade of Hartnell C.C. in Salinas, CA committed to Wyoming. The tweet came from Brad Hoiseth who exclusively covers junior college recruiting for Rivals. So he is definitely a reliable source.

As posted on Twitter earlier, WR/RB Josh Wade (5-8, 170) from Hartnell Coll. in Salinas, CA is NOT part of #Wyoming's '14 recruiting class

In reviewing Wade's HUDL page, he is listed as a 5'8 and 160lbs and part of the 2015 recruiting class. He has highlights from the 2011-12 and 2013-14 listed. Not sure if he redshirted in 2012-13. There is footage of just three games available for the most recent season.

Wade was offered by the previous staff back in September. He is actually friends with former Wyoming PG Derrious Gilmore, both are from the Baltimore area. Not sure if Bohl has honored that offer or not. This is a situation that we will keep our eye on. Keep checking for updates on Wade and other recruiting news.

Craig Bohl Announces His First Recruiting Class As Head Coach Of The Wyoming Cowboys

Cowboys' 2014 Class Includes 22 Recruits From 11 States

THE FIRST RECRUITING CLASS UNDER CRAIG BOHL IS OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL. CHECK OUT THE FULL RELEASE BELOW.

Laramie, Wyo. (Feb. 5, 2014) -- A class of 22 recruits that reach from California to Florida was announced on Wednesday afternoon by University of Wyoming head football coach Craig Bohl. Bohl was extremely pleased with the class his staff assembled in the shortened recruiting time they had available to them after taking over the Cowboy Football program this winter.

Among the largest position groups were: three quarterbacks, one of whom was a two-time All-State selection in the state of Wyoming; four tight ends, which was needed to fit the needs of Bohl's new pro-style offense; four defensive backs; and five defensive linemen to fill needs at those positions. The 2014 class includes two junior college signees and 20 high school recruits, and breaks down into 12 student-athletes on offense and 10 on defense.

"Overall, we are very pleased with the class that our staff has been able to put together," said Bohl. "The first year that you come into a program is always less that ideal because the normal recruiting cycle begins over a year in advance of signing day.

"Our staff hit the ground running. It was great to have Coach (Pete) Kaligis on our staff to help us maintain contact with some of the young men we already had committed. We have a very capable staff, who have connections in different parts of the country. We probably accessed some areas that I don't think are going to be traditional Wyoming areas, i.e. Florida, but nonetheless because of the skill base that was there and the needs that we have, we feel like we've done well.

"We are going to continue to re-engage in what I would call traditional Wyoming areas, including the state of Wyoming, in which we were happy to sign a player from Wyoming this year in Austin Fort from Gillette. Colorado will be an area where we will increase our efforts, and was a state that we felt we did well in this year signing two young men. We're going to continue to recruit out west. We were able to sign a group of student-athletes from California and Arizona this year."

In terms of how he felt his staff was able to meet the specific position needs in his first recruiting class at Wyoming, Bohl said most position needs had been met.

"For the most part, we feel good that we were able to fill most of our needs," said Bohl. "Certainly it was important for us to find a couple quarterbacks, which we did. Running back was an important position, as was the tight end position, which you can see from the number of tight ends that we signed was an area of emphasis. A lot of those needs grew out of the re-engineering of our offense. We are going to utilize a pro-style system, so those guys will come into play, and we feel like we really did well there. The other area we think we did really well in was the secondary. We were probably a little shy at linebacker."

When Bohl spoke earlier this winter about his expectations heading into 2014 National Signing Day, he said that he wouldn't sign players unless he felt they met a threshold of being able to help the Cowboys win in the Mountain West Conference. Bohl admitted that the final size of the 2014 class (22 signees) exceeded his initial expectations.

"We went into this recruiting class thinking that if we were able to get to 20 young men, who we had a firm conviction in our hearts were above the line for us to be successful in the Mountain West, then we would have done extremely well," said Bohl. "When you look at the size of this class, we exceeded 20, and we are firmly convinced that these young men are all above the line. Now are all the members of this class going to be All-Mountain West players, probably not, but coming in, our convictions as coaches is they all have a chance to be excellent players."

The national letter-of-intent signing period for football began on Wednesday, Feb. 5 and will conclude on Tuesday, April 1.

How Will Bohl's First Recruiting Class Compare To Christensen's?

New coaches can have a hard time putting together solid recruiting classes in their first year on the job.

Let's start off with a bit of trivia. There is one member of Dave Christensen's first recruiting class in 2009 that will be on the Cowboys 2014 roster. Care to take a guess?

I'll give you three hints...

1) Went to high school in Colorado

2) Linebacker

3) Medical redshirt

If you guessed Devyn Harris then you are the big winner! Go tell your friends, they will be really excited for you. Of those 24 original signees, there is just the one that remains after six years. Harris is unique and he will have played for two head coaches in their very first year in Laramie.

Christensen had slightly less than two months to put together his first recruiting class. Bohl has basically been on the job a month since he stayed at North Dakota State through their playoff run. Bohl said he wouldn't sign players unless they were ready to play in the Mountain West.

Christensen hit the recruiting in Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri in order to try and bring in speed. Those were new targets for Wyoming recruiting, especially Texas. Bohl has found success in Florida, a state that is basically the complete polar opposite of the Cowboy State.

As far as finding starters, Christensen did a solid of getting players that produced right away. The main issue is that these players came from different areas and even guaranteed starting spots couldn't keep them in Laramie. You know who stayed? The majority of the recruits from Colorado and Wyoming. Laramie itself can't be blamed for players leaving. Friction between some players and the staff also resulted in departures.

I'm not counting Nick Carlson or Josh Leonard in the information below as they were both recruited by Joe Glenn. They just joined this recruiting class as a result of grayshirting.

STARTERS WHO LEFT EARLY

Alvester Alexander - Started three seasons at running back, declared for the NFL draft after his junior year.

Robert Benjamin - Transferred after eventually losing the starting job to Carta-Samuels.

Austyn Carta-Samuels - Started two years for Wyoming at QB, ended up playing at Vanderbilt his senior season.

Shamiel Gary - Freshmen All-American at safety, started two years, transferred to Oklahoma State.

STARTERS WHO STAYED

TE Spencer Bruce

LB Devyn Harris

LB Ghaali Muhammad

WR Chris McNeill

S Luke Ruff

SIGNEES THAT NEVER PLAYED

Scott Criss - Redshirted in 2009, transferred to Nebraska to walk-on. Appeared in parts of two games at Nebraska.

Rodney Jaynes - Left the program his freshmen year.

Trendt Marsom - Left the program his freshmen year.

Larry Mitchell - Redshirted as a freshmen, left the team at the start of his sophomore year.

Alo Moli - Never attended Wyoming. Went on an LDS Mission and then eventually ended up at Mesa Community College.

Thomas Vonashek - Redshirted in 2009, was kicked off the team in 2010 for a "violation of team rules

THE REST

Mark Willis and Todd Knight were backups who both graduated early and elected to not come back for their final seasons.

The rest of the group contributed at some point in their career. All of them ending up leaving eventually whether it was it due to injury, or deciding to leave the team.

Here is the full list of Wyoming's 2009 recruiting class:

High-School Signees (21)

Ht.

Will Bohl be able to produce more contributors in his first class? Only time will tell that. We don't have a crystal ball. I think this first class will be judged less on how many starters it produces, and more on how many players stay in Wyoming. When multiple starters leave a program, it is disheartening to the fans, the program and recruiting. If a majority of these players are able to stay in Laramie and help build the foundation for the program, that is what matters.

Players from Florida could enjoy Laramie and the change of pace that it offers. Colorado State has had plenty of success recruiting the sunshine state. There is no reason that can't happen just 64 miles north. Christensen kept changing his recruiting targets each year. Bohl had success with Florida players at North Dakota State, he can repeat that success at Wyoming. The key is consistency.

It will be exciting to watch these players grow, develop and help shape the new direction of Wyoming football. If a sense of community and family is created, then out of state players will feel comfortable and enjoy their time in Laramie.

A new era is upon us, and this is the first step.
