I wanna give a big shout out and thanks to Rich over at Athlon, he clued us into all this OSU madness. So go ahead, check out Athlon's stuff (it's Columbian and pure), and then come back here to discuss it. I know us being ranked preseason just kills most Goon fans, so I'm just loving this. Just remember, throw the ball forward Landry, forward, and it works better.

Meet Your Quarterback: Wes Lunt

Remember that Wes Lunt post I've been promising? Sure, a few weeks late, and probably not worth your time, but here nonetheless.

As we look to the 2012 version of our Cowboy football team, we go into the season knowing that for the first time since at least 1950 a true freshman will start the year at quarterback. First off, what does this say about the state of our quarterbacks? I think is says "damn you, Johnny asshole transfer Deaton, we need you", but that's just me. Probably, however, it says we have several good quarterbacks, and no great ones- which is not a huge deal, if the rest of the team is where we all think they will be (Bill Young, it's your time son, make me a believer or go to hell and stay there. Or Kansas).

It also says something about Mike Gundy. Every year he's been here he has molded the offense to fit a quarterback, and rolled with the best playmaker on the team. Now though, he's got a system he loves, and choose who best fit that system, not necessarily the best player. I don't mean that to say Lunt isn't the best quarterback (I think spring ball proved they were all pretty equal), but that we are not changing the offense for one player.

Now then, back to Lunt (let's get the easy stuff out of the way first). In high school Lunt won two state championships, missed a few games his senior year but came back to throw for 3,650 yards, 31 TD's (against 4 int's), and set a record with a 590 yard passing game. Sick stuff, but thats high school (which, I feel the need to mention again, he should still be in), as Pat Jones likes to say, this is big boy football.

You know the drill, click for more........

Lunt has an absolute cannon for an arm, and regardless of how skinny he looks, has to be in pretty good shape to come out of spring ball intact (Walsh had to sit out most of his first spring because he wasn't used to throwing as much). An offseason with Rob Glass should add 10 pounds of muscle, which brings him to about 6'3" and 220-230 pounds. Helping matters, and keeping him alive, is the small fact that he, unlike Walsh, doesn't run around a whole lot.

I hear you, I know what you're thinking, and you're right, I'm an asshole, but you're wrong thinking being shifty is an asset. This offensive line is used to running plays that keep a quarterback in the pocket, not rolling out and running Zac Robinson era counter options and zone reads (thank Jesus). Walsh would bring back the zone read, something we haven't done in a while.

I think Wes also offers the greatest headroom, and gives us the best chance to win not only this year, but the next 2-3 years. If Chelf can't beat out two freshman now, after 3 years in the program, he's not going to next year. I think we need to find a way to get Walsh in the offense, but not at qb (but yes, keeping him as a backup qb. I'm crazy, I know). Given the schedule as well, Lunt will have 3 games to get his feet under him before taking on Texas.

At the end of the season, I think our team will be defined by a strong running game and hard hitting defense more than we will the play of our quarterback. Hell yes, the quarterback play is important, but one player can't win or lose a game. I think he will be fine (2500 yards, 20 TD's, 10 int's), I think we will be a factor in the Big 12 race (I'm thinking finishing 3rd or 4th, depending on TCU), and I do think we have our quarterback for the next 3-4 years. Now go Wes, don't make me a liar.

Go Pokes

Cowboy Baseball Wins Bedlam Series 2-1

Feels good doesn't it? I don't know that we've ever owned Bedlam like we have this year. Maybe back in the 40's. Someone, who shall remain nameless (ME BITCHES) predicted the outcome, so we'll give it up to that person. How did we do it? Pitching son, pitching.

On Friday Andrew Heaney was dealing it, going for the 3 hit complete game shutout of the Sooners. Heaney improved his already sick ERA to 1.65 after tossing the first Bedlam shutout in 7 years. Heaney is the real deal folks, and we're gonna ride his arm as far as it can take us (and pray to God we find one more arm).

Saturday was an ugly affair on our side, as Kyle Ottoson got roughed up for 4 runs in one and two thirds inning, getting pulled during the second. It didn't get much better after that, with the next two pitchers allowing 4 more runs, and the Cowboys eventually fell 8-4.

On Sunday the bats were quite again as pitching ruled, with Vince Wheeland and Blake Barnes only allowing 2 runs off 4 hits. The Cowboys were able to get key hits in the third to move two runs in, and Randy McCurry's sac fly allowed Robbie Rea to score in the bottom of the 8th to give the Pokes the 3-2 victory.

This is the second straight season we've taken the Bedlam Series, and it keeps on feeling good. We are now in a three way tie for second with Texas and Texas A&M. The Sooners fall to fifth, two and a half games back of the pack above them.

Next up for the Cowboys is two non-conference series against Ohio State and Alcorn State before finishing up with Texas A&M at home. The Sooners, meanwhile, have to deal with Baylor next week, so they will probably slip a little further down in the conference (which is almost as good as a Cowboy win).

Go Pokes

Bedlam Baseball

via mlbdraftcountdown.files.wordpress.com

Yes boys and girls, it's time for the real Bedlam Baseball. Tonight the game is in Tulsa at ONEOK Field, with the weekend contests taking place in OKC at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Guess who's in Tulsa right now? This guy. Guess who's been drinking and will make this the quickest preview/open thread ever? This guy.

The Essentials:

This is important, we are tied for 3rd, on a 9 game winning streak, and ranked 25th in a few of the publications. A series win would go a long way towards getting us an NCAA tournament bid (or, more likely, a better bid), and it's always good fun to win Bedlam. Both the Cowboys and Sooners are batting .273, with OSU led by Robbie Rea, Gabe Weidenaar, and Trey Whaley.

On the mound, the Cowboys are 2nd in the league with a team ERA of 2.89, and are paced by Andrew Heaney and his 1.82 ERA. Heaney will take his 6-1 record into tonights game, Kyle Otterson (4-5, 3.12 ERA) will start Saturday, and Vince Wheeland (2-1, 3.21 ERA) will get the nod Sunday.

What's the deal? OU isn't playing very well right now, and we are. The bat's have come alive the last three weeks, the pitching has been solid, and we are getting hot at the right time. A series win and we all but clinch 3rd place in the conference (OU still has to deal with Baylor, so I know they want wins tonight). A series win also gives us a pretty good resume going into the postseason. Also, we need all the wins we can get as well, as we have series left against Ohio state and Texas A&M. I think we'll get the series win, but not the sweep, taking tonight and Sunday's contest.

Go Pokes

Cowboys Ride For Free, And Drop Stacks On The Way

No, I'm not giving you money. But some of you are giving money, and are giving hard. Some of you may know, some may not, but currently Every Day Should Be Saturday is running a fundraiser, with all procedes going to Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta.

Are you wondering why you should care? Because some incredibly generous Cowboy or Cowgirl out there dropped $1000 to give Oklahoma State the lead in the charity race. One Poke has placed our beloved college in the lead (with the winner getting EDSBS re-skinned in team colors), and now I'm asking for the rest of you to actually do something good.

Also, they prefer donations in the form of a final score. So, for example, $44.10 would be a great donation. I'd also like to point out that OU is nowhere to be found on that list, and remind all Sooner fans that we all already think you're all dickheads, and this only helps prove that. I love seeing Cowboys win Bedlam, at anything, including being awesome.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know somebody out there is awesome, and to thank that person if they are a reader.

Go Pokes

Short but awesome links today, let's bust our collective nuts.

Wes Lunt named starting quarterback

I promise, at some point soon, we'll say something about this, but for now here's the Oklahoman's take.

Wes Lunt named starting quarterback

And the Tulsa world. Lunt looks stoned in this photo.

Brandon Weeden and Josh Cooper talk about being on the Browns together

You know the story, Weeden was drafted and Cooper was picked up out of free agency, and now the teammates talk about playing together, still.

Cowboy baseball is riding an 8 game win streak going into Bedlam

The Cowboys have also swept two straight series, and have climbed into a tie for third.

Anyiam, Adcock, Jones, Thomas, Garner, and Blatnick all sign free agent deals

Good stuff boys, good luck in "the league".

Markell Martin drafted in the 6th round, goes to Tennessee

Weeden taken in the first at 22, goes to Cleveland

Blackmon taken at 5, goes to Jacksonville

A collective "congrats" goes out to all Cowboys drafted, and free agents. I think Blackmon will make an immediate impact, I think Weeden can if they get any receivers around him (Cooper will help), and Tennessee needs safety's badly, so Martin could as well.

Finally, voting for the 2012 OSU fan shirt is up

I'm going to guess CRFF's idea of "Lunt get's Cunt" won't make it, but a man can dream. Personally I voted for 2.

Go Pokes

Todd Monken Is My Hero

Todd Monken Is My Hero

I know I get to sit here all day and bash on players (and I love it), but it's rare you get to hear a coach do it, so Monken's quote about OU (and Landry Jones in particular) is money. People are making way too much out of it, but to hear my offensive coordinator basically call Jones a pussy, is amazing. And really, if you ever add the word "dozer" to a play, you deserved to be called pussies.
