Magic won't bring television analyst Matt Guokas back, according to report

The Orlando Magic won't have one of the most significant figures in franchise history on hand when their 25th season gets underway in October. As Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports, the team has not renewed the contract of Matt Guokas, who has served as the team's television color commentator since 2004. Guokas was also the first head coach in Magic history, guiding Orlando to a 111-217 (.338) record over four seasons. Play-by-play man David Steele will return for the 2013/14 season.

According to Robbins, "[t]eam spokesman Joel Glass wouldn’t give a reason for the decision" not to renew Guokas' contract. "Matty has been and will always be a valued part of Magic history," Glass said. "We truly appreciate his commitment and service to the organization."

As a broadcaster, Guokas developed a reputation for calling games straight down the middle, without the partisanship that defines so many telecasts throughout the league. In January, Zach Lowe of Grantland called the pairing of Steele--who is similarly fair in his work on Orlando's telecasts--and Guokas "perhaps the very best on your League Pass dial."

Robbins reports that Glass said the Magic have yet to decide on a replacement for Guokas. Former Magic player Jeff Turner could be "one possibility," given that he has filled in for Guokas in the past. Radio color commentator Richie Adubato, a former Magic head coach, has also subbed for Guokas on television when necessary.

NBA Draft 2013: Trey Burke assesses his own stock

Trey Burke is arguably the best point guard prospect in the 2013 NBA Draft, and the Michigan product believes he could be taken off the board as soon as second overall by the Orlando Magic on June 27th. "I'm hearing anywhere from two to six," Burke said in a radio interview on Wednesday, according to Mark Snyder of USA Today. "That's pretty much everything I'm hearing now."

Burke's projection has him going from Orlando's slot to the New Orleans Pelicans'. The Washington Wizards, Charlotte Bobcats, and Phoenix Suns will select, in that order, between Orlando and New Orleans.

Burke's performance in the 2013 season earned him the Wooden Award for the nation's top point guard. The sophomore averaged 18.6 points, 3.2 boards, 6.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game for the Michigan Wolverines.

Snell is an interesting swingman at whom the Magic could take a look. He's extremely long, with a nearly 7-foot wingspan, and he can dribble well enough to play the shooting guard spot. He can slide down to play small forward, but would need to add some weight to play that position full-time.

He's a good shooter from the catch-and-shoot position and right now that's where he's most comfortable, though he can also run through screens and knock down a jumper. He's a solid passer but relies mostly on drives and kicks to rack up assists.

With his athleticism and size, you'd like to see him rebound better, but he was pretty anemic in that aspect throughout his career. His five percent rebounding rate is puzzling considering his athletic gifts. He also gets to the free throw line at a low rate and won't be able to help the Magic out in that regard, where they were already awful last season.

Defensively, Snell is solid. He consistently gives effort on that end of the floor and really moves his feet well on the ball and through screens. His length is an added bonus as he's able to bother shooters on the perimeter. He has a lot of potential as a 3-and-D type of guy in the NBA.

Nobody in this year's draft will have the experience that Rice has. Through the NBA D-League, he proved that there's more than one way to crack the NBA. In March of 2012, Rice was kicked off Georgia Tech's basketball team. Prior to being kicked off, Rice was constantly benched for "disciplinary reasons" and could never find a way to stay on the court. When he was officially kicked off he had two choices: transfer to another college and sit out a year, or head to the D-League. The Rio Grande Valley Vipers selected Rice in the 4th round of the 2012 NBA D-League Draft.

Rice struggled to find playing time early on but eventually became a starter and led Rio Grande Valle to become 2013 D-League Champions. Rice averaged 25 points, 9.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, two steals and two blocks in the playoffs, all while gaining professional experience. He was paid and learned how to deal with the rigors of traveling like a professional team. As an NBA prospect, Rice has a lot to offer.

The first thing you notice when watching Rice is his incredible athleticism. He used that athleticism in transition where he excelled, catching alley-oops and finishing easily at the rim. Per 36 minutes he averaged over a steal and a block while posting 9.3 rebounds. He shot 38.5 percent from the three-point line. And we should note that he is already comfortable with the NBA three-point line, as he's been shooting from it for months. He's a very willing passer and rounds out his game with a nice array of moves in the post, where he likes to attack smaller guards.

He has a long ways to go defensively. The consistent effort isn't always there. He also has a poor defensive stance and struggles to gain opponents on the perimeter. He has the physical tools to become at least an average defender but that'll take time and coaching.

Rice has a lot of concerns that will keep him from being drafted as high as his potential and talent say he should. Though he didn't have any problems on or off the court in the D-League, his disciplinary issues at Georgia Tech will scare some teams away on Draft night.

Ricky Ledo

6-foot-6 / 197 pounds / 6-foot-7.25 wingspan

Ledo is the most mysterious guy in the draft. He was highly touted coming out of high school but was declared academically ineligible in his only year at Providence. He was still allowed to practice but didn't play a single game as a Friar. Scouts saw Ledo in practice but are still unsure how to peg a guy who never played in a collegiate game.

But Ledo has impressed at the Draft Combine as has shown scouts the promise he had out of high school. He excels with the ball in his hands and is able to score from anywhere on the floor. He's such a good ballhandler that some scouts have wandered if he'll play point guard in the NBA.

Defensively he has his issues--but that's not out of the norm--especially for a guy who only played defense in practice. He also has a lot of character concerns. That, factored in with the fact that nobody saw him play against college competition, will keep him out of the lottery.

The talent is certainly there. You can't really tell much from highlight tapes, but if you want to see actual game footage of Ledo, here's some high school game clips. I'm not sure he'll still be available at No. 51 but if the Magic choose to stockpile assets via trade then he could be someone to take a look at.

Archie Goodwin

Goodwin showed glimpses of lottery potential at points in the 2013 year's season at Kentucky, but has since drastically fallen off draft boards. The team as a whole struggled with inconsistency and toughness all year and you have to point at Goodwin to take some of the blame. He was as inconsistent as anyone on the team. But he does have tremendous upside and he's the youngest player in the draft so he will find a home in the NBA. That home just might be in the D-League for the first year or two.

Goodwin has tremendous athletic ability and he's super competitive. He's extremely fast in transition and when he drives to the lane. And he matches that speed with a nearly 6-foot-10 wingspan. When he gets a rebound, his natural instinct is take off, where he's one of the fastest players from one end of the court to the other. That gets him in trouble sometimes as he's often out of control and goes flying into someone. But it also puts tremendous pressure on a defense to get back or he will score an easy bucket at the rim.

He shot 51.2 percent out of pick-and-rolls this seaso,n per DraftExpress. When he turns the corner, he's looking to attack and gets to the rim at a high rate, as he averaged 6.4 attempts there in 31.8 minutes. On the defensive end, Goodwin shows great promise. He's extremely aggressive and loves playing passing lanes but he can also move his feet and his length can bother shooters.

Goodwin's lack of jump-shooting is going to kill him come Draft time. He's been shooting extremely poor at the Combine as his shot is flat and inconsistent. He shot well at the beginning of the season but really struggled down the stretch and finished shooting just 26.6 percent from three-point range. He's going to have even more trouble adjusting to the NBA three-point line if he doesn't work on his mechanics. He can be turnover-prone as he's ultra-aggressive and rushes himself into bad decisions. His shot selection also left a lot to be desired during his freshman campaign.

Goodwin probably would have benefitted from another season at Kentucky, but the outstanding incoming freshman class would have severely cut his playing time. He won't be ready to contribute to the NBA until he either fixes his jump shot or converts and improves as a point guard. But if Goodwin develops properly he could really be a home run with all of the potential he has athletically.

Hardaway was overshadowed in his three years at Michigan. He was the second leading scorer--behind potential top-five pick Trey Burke--on the nation's second-best team. But he's been impressing scouts with the overall polish in his game.

He has the size and athleticism to be a solid shooting guard in the NBA. He has the ability score either off the dribble or in spot-up situations. I think his handle has been a little underrated throughout the years. He's able to make a simple move and pull up from practically anywhere on the floor. He moves well without the ball and seems to grasp the little nuances of when and where to cut for open looks.

He's also a lot stronger than his wiry frame would suggest. He put up 16 reps of 185 on the bench press at the Combine, which is pretty impressive considering his body type. That should help him defensively in the NBA as he could slide down to the small forward spot in a small-ball lineup.

Looking at his game, there's not a whole lot to criticize. His shot-selection was often questioned at Michigan but that could be a product of the system he played within. Michigan looked to push the pace and find shots early in their sets and Hardaway mostly played the wing taking those shots.

Like the other guys listed here, it's unlikely that Hardaway would actually fall all the way to No. 51 for the Magic. But he is a guy who should pique Orlando's interest. He would be ready to play right away and could provide some life to an offense that stalled out for periods of time last year.

Orlando Pro Summer League 2013 schedule, new format announced

On Thursday, the Orlando Magic announced the schedule for the 2013 Orlando Pro Summer League. The yearly event allows rookies, young prospects, and NBA hopefuls to gain five-on-five experience in front of scouts, general managers, and other league decision-makers.

The Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers, and Utah Jazz will join the Magic for the 2013 Summer League, which runs from July 7th through the 12th on the practice court at Amway Center. The event is closed to the public.

Each of the 12 teams will play four games over the first five days of the event. July 12th, designated Championship Day, will crown a winner of the 2013 Orlando Pro Summer League. Championship Day is a new addition to the event.

To determine seeding for Championship Day, points will be awarded based on results from the first five days of Summer League play. Three points will be awarded for a win, with one point being awarded for each quarter won. In the event that teams tie in a quarter, then each team will receive 0.5 points.

The tiebreakers, for seeding purposes, are, in order: total point differential and total points allowed. A coin flip will serve as the third tiebreaker.

NBA Draft 2013: Orlando Magic prepare to continue rebuilding

Armed with the second pick in the Draft, Orlando looks to move forward in its rebuilding effort. Follow all the news, rumors, and analysis in this StoryStream.

With the NBA regular season winding down, it's time for some fans and analysts to look ahead to the 2013 NBA Draft. To that end, Chad Ford of ESPN Insider débuted his first 2013 mock draft on Tuesday, based on the league's standings after Sunday's action. With the league's second-worst record, the Orlando Magic own the second pick in Ford's mock, though it's important to note that the NBA does not allot Draft position based on standings: with the second-worst record, Orlando could pick anywhere from first overall to fifth overall.

In Tuesday's mock, Ford has Orlando selecting Oklahoma State Cowboys guard Marcus Smart, a freshman. Ford touts Smart's physical strength, "great motor," and "toughness," as well as his "leadership." Ford also notes that Orlando already has "promising young players" at small forward, power forward, and center--one can assume he means Maurice Harkless, Tobias Harris, and Nik Vučević, respectively--so Smart would address Orlando's need for guard help.

Smart averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game for the Cowboys, shooting 40.4 percent from the field, 29 percent from three-point range, and 77.7 percent from the foul line. While jump-shooting is a weakness of Smart's, it's a skill that can improve over time, and his high rate of free throws--he averaged one free-throw try for every 1.7 field goals attempted--suggests that he has the tools to get into the paint and draw contact.

Smart did his draft stock no favors in the NCAA tournament, shooting 5-of-13 from the field for 14 points, with four assists and five turnovers, as the 12th-seeded Oregon Ducks upset his fifth-seeded Oklahoma State squad.

Ford selected center Nerlens Noel for the Charlotte Bobcats with the first pick in the mock draft. After Smart, the next three players off the board were Kansas Jayhawks guard Ben McLemore, Georgetown Hoyas swingman Otto Porter, and Indiana Hoosiers swingman Victor Oladipo.

NBA Draft 2013 rumor: GMs "love" Victor Oladipo, according to report

One NBA Draft prospect to watch in the weeks leading up to the June 27th event is Indiana Hoosiers swingman Victor Oladipo, if the latest word from Chad Ford is any indication. "Oladipo is the guy that GMs love in this draft," Ford said in a chat with ESPN readers on Wednesday. "I've talked to 14 or 15 who tell me he's their favorite player."

Ford issued that response because of a fan who asked specifically if the Orlando Magic might select Oladipo with the second overall pick. Ford says he had the Magic taking Trey Burke instead of Oladipo "primarily based on need," but he goes on to say that either Orlando or the Phoenix Suns could be "strong fits" for the junior shooting guard.

In Tobias Harris and Maurice Harkless, the Magic already have two talented young prospects who can play on the perimeter, though Harris may be better suited to play as a power forward. Oladipo may be redundant with Orlando's roster as presently constructed, but coming off a season in which the Magic led the league in losses, Rob Hennigan can't be too picky as he continues his rebuild.

Oladipo enjoyed a breakout season at Indiana, building on his reputation as a hard-nosed, hard-working player while adding to his offensive repertoire. He averaged 13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.2 steals on a remarkable 59.9 percent shooting from the floor. Whether he'll be an effective scorer at the NBA level is an open question.

NBA Draft rumor: Magic decision likely between Trey Burke and Ben McLemore, according to report

With the NBA Draft order set as of Tuesday night, the rumor mill will certainly grind along until the Cleveland Cavaliers make the first pick on June 27th. One rumor regarding the Orlando Magic surfaced Wednesday from Pro Basketball Draft, which reported that the Magic's decision with the second overall pick will likely come down to Kansas Jayhawks shooting guard Ben McLemore and Michigan Wolverines point guard Trey Burke.

"Both players can help" as Orlando rebuilds, according to the tweet. "Workout [and] interviews are key." Magic general manager Rob Hennigan said in February that he wants to add players "who are about the right things" in order to create a "sustainable" team, so certainly the interviews with McLemore and Burke will figure heavily into his decision as Draft night approaches.

Most experts consider McLemore to be the second-best prospect in the Draft, behind Kentucky Wildcats center Nerlens Noel. The St. Louis, Missouri native has drawn comparisons to Ray Allen due to his combination of athleticism and shooting range. McLemore shot 42 percent from three-point range on 4.7 attempts per game en route to averaging 15.9 points in his lone season with the Jayhawks.

Experts haven't compared Burke to anyone as great as Allen, but he did win the Wooden Award for the NCAA's top point guard in 2013. In his two seasons at Michigan, Burke averaged 16.9 points and 5.7 assists per game, shooting 45 percent from the floor and 36.7 percent on threes.

Their numbers are similar and so are the questions each face as they transition from small colleges to the NBA. Lillard never played in an NCAA tournament game and many wondered whether or not he'd be able to play against the competition in professional basketball. They also speculated whether a guy who looked to mostly score could take over the point guard position. McCollum's critics are asking the same thing, though McCollum had the benefit of performing on the NCAA tournament stage.

McCollum is the most complete scorer in the draft. He's a deadly shooter with deep range: as a senior, before injuring his left foot, he was shooting 51.6 percent from three-point range on 5.3 attempts a game. With the ball in his hands, McCollum can break down defenders and get to the basket or pull up in a defender's face. His step-back jumper is deadly and he's extremely comfortable shooting around high ball screens. He understands the pace of the game and he's explosive enough to quickly change that pace with the ball in hands.

Off the ball, McCollum is money. He's patient when coming off screens and understands the spacing and how to utilize screens to evade defenders to get his shot off.

Questions about his game linger, specifically regarding whether he has the instincts to become a point guard at the NBA level. He was great scoring off the pick-and-roll but he didn't really seem to utilize it for his teammates. He would often settle for a tough shot rather than swinging the ball for open shots, which seems to explain his 2.9 assists per game. But there's always the argument that his teammates will be much better at the next level and he'll be able to trust them much more than he did at Lehigh.

McCollum addressed questions about his position and the Lillard comparisons in this interview.

What I like about McCollum is his maturity which you can sense in every interview he has. It's no coincidence that he chose to stay in college for four years to earn a degree. I also appreciate his loyalty. He stuck with Lehigh for four years and led it past Xavier and Duke in its 2012 NCAA tournament run.

Rob Hennigan has shown no resistance in drafting four-year college players having selected Andrew Nicholson and Kyle O`Quinn in 2012. If McCollum becomes the guy for Orlando, then Hennigan will have the luxury in trading back and acquiring more assets or dumping contracts to get the point guard out of Lehigh.

At one point in his career, Kabongo was looked at as a potential lottery pick. A NCAA suspension cut 23 games out of his 2012-13 season and his stock has since taken a hit. But the Magic have expressed interest in the Texas point guard and right now he's projected to be taken somewhere around Orlando's No. 51 overall pick.

As a collegiate athlete, the biggest knock against Kabongo was always his jump shot. And though he's been working on it, it still hasn't reached a level that makes him a full-time starter in the NBA. He looked rusty coming off his suspension this season but his performance against Oklahoma was eye-opening and he really looked like the potential top-10 guy whom scouts came to know in high school. In that game, he scored 31 points on 13 shots, grabbed eight boards, dished six assists and recored four steals.

But just a month later, his 0-for-12 performance against Texas Tech raised more red flags. In the first day of the Combine, he ended as the worst jump shooter, shooting just 32 percent from the floor.

Some have speculated that his suspension in the 2012-13 season forced him to leave school this year, but he addressed those questions maturely and professionally in this interview. He may not be worth a first-round draft pick but if the Magic choose to go with another area of need, then he could be available at No. 51.

Canaan really showed off at the Combine, which may cause his draft stock to spike, but he still has a chance to drop due to questions of whether or not he's tall enough to provide the scoring in the NBA that he did at Murray St..

He registered a 40.5-inch max vertical jump at the Combine and showed explosive in all of the agility drills. At Murray St. he was asked to be a primary scorer with the ball in hands and that's what he did. He averaged 21.8 points per game in his senior season, though his shooting numbers took a dip. That probably had to do more-so with how much he was asked to provide.

Canaan never showed superior court vision and most of his assists came off simple drive-and-dishes. Put that with the fact that he measured 5-foot-11 at the Combine and it's easy to see why some teams may back off come Draft time. Canaan has said that he's absolutely a willing passer and was only scoring as much as he did because that's what the coaches at Murray St. asked him to do. Watch a Racer game and it's easy to see that the team really did need him to score to compete at the highest level.

The point guard of the national championship Louisville Cardinals is super athletic but will have to overcome a number of challenges to find a spot in the NBA. He's about the same height as Canaan but not as strong; Canaan's built like a bully and knows how and when to use strength to his advantage.

However, Siva is more athletic than Canaan in almost every sense. He wowed scouts with a 41.5-inch max vertical and his 3.16 time in the three-quarters court sprint. At Louisville he utilized that athleticism to make a name for himself as one of the nation's best on-ball defenders. He was quick enough to take chances to steal the ball and recover to get in front of his man with ease.

He averaged 2.3 steals per game and hounded opponents full-court as the focal point of Louisville's attacking trap defense. His woes come at the offensive end, where he never developed a reliable jump shot--as a starter, he never shot better than 28.8 percent from three. He's a pretty good passer, though, and he uses his athleticism to attack the bucket hard.

He's not a huge offensive threat but he's a willing passer who will hound players with his on-ball defense. And he could definitely be available when the Magic are on the clock at No. 51.

Pressey is a small, quick guard who loves collecting assists. On December 28th, he recorded 19 assists against the UCLA Bruins. His 38.5-inch max vertical is just below Canaan's and Siva's but full steam ahead he's probably faster than either. He might have been the faster player running straight.

But his poor shooting, lack of size (5-foot-11.5 in shoes), alarming turnover rate, and late-game woes will keep him from being selected in the first round. It's also unknown how long he can stay on the floor, as he'll most likely have a hard time defending taller guards.

He shot the three-pointer at a 34.7-percent clip for his career. It's not great, but it's better than Siva's mark of 29.1 percent. Then again, Siva is a significantly better defender than the Missouri product. It's very likely that Pressey will be available at No. 51, and he could develop into a backup point guard who can get his team going with the easy buckets he can create for teammates.

I need to note that these prospects aren't the best ones available. McCollum and Kabongo have talked to the Magic and the others could be available when Orlando is on the clock in the second round.
