The Spurs Are As Fun (And As Boring) As You Decide They Are

Fun is overrated; at least it is insofar as the idea of it being something that can provide lasting joy. In Spanish the word for fun is "diversion". We need fun stuff to allow us to not think; if we think about the things that really matter all the time, we'd go insane. Don't get me wrong, fun is fine. But at its very core it's nothing more than a fleeting distraction.

A more lasting way of enjoyment, and one that in my eyes gives meaning to a person's life, is to look for more nuanced ways of distraction; ones that don't necessarily have immediate payoff and that make us work for them. I watched The Avengers a couple of days ago and had a whole lot of fun for the two hours it lasted. it didn't change me and I didn't take anything away from it, but I was completely fine with that. I wanted to have fun and I did.

When we were bored out of our minds a few days ago waiting for the second round to begin, we started making lists of our favorite movies and along with a few classics, I threw in Noah Baumbach's opera prima Kicking and Screaming. It's a movie about 4 recent college graduates, their struggles facing the real world and their search for an identity. It's a slow movie, heavy on seemingly meaningless dialogue that doesn't seem to advance the plot. Needless to say, it's not a thrill ride but something about it spoke to me in a way a summer blockbuster could never do. Does that mean that there is no place in my life for The Avengers and I have to settle for proto-mumblecore from now on? Of course not. It means that there are different ways to enjoy things, because those things were conceived to be enjoyed differently.

So what was that extended and convoluted intro for? To address the numerous articles that keep cropping up about the Spurs being boring.

The first article that caught mine and other Pounders' attention was penned by Ethan Strauss and was titled The Spurs are boring, which is a shame. It's not exactly the classic article damming the Spurs for not dunking and Tim Duncan for not showing expression, but it was still an indictment of the Spurs style as boring. One excerpt of the piece caught my eye over the rest:

The fallacy is believing San Antonio's beautiful basketball to be inherently interesting. It's only interesting to people who like beautiful basketball. Unfortunately, most people don't like beautiful basketball. They like hero ball. Hence the demand for Miami to give LeBron the rock despite Wade's mismatch versus Amar'e.

The problem with that otherwise great quote is that it uses the word interesting. That's a mistake. The Spurs basketball is inherently interesting, if perhaps not fun. Like Strauss himself admits and Kevin Arnovitz expands on his article, the Spurs offense is a thing of beauty. The ball moves as the players shift positions, setting timely screens and moving without the ball anticipating every pass. There's no selfishness present, with every guy taking the shot only if they think is the best one the offense can get. To quote Clips Nation Steve Perrin, it's a highly choreographed ballet. And like ballet, is not going to be fun if what you want is to watch a superhero movie. It doesn't mean one is better than the other, it just means that you have to approach them differently if you want to enjoy them.

To really be entertained by the Spurs, the watcher needs to either be a Spurs fan or be totally engaged. People need to take an active approach and try to really see what is happening on the game and not just follow the ball. There's also a bit of previous knowledge required - you can't really enjoy watching Parker operate with a double screen if you are not aware of how a pick and roll usually works and how that compares with how the Spurs occasionally run it. That is not a problem when watching the Heat getting out in transition with Wade leading the break and LeBron trailing. The beauty there is apparent, even if you've never watched basketball in your life.

It is at this point that someone, like SBNation's own Andrew Sharp, will point out that even to keen observers aware of all the wrinkles of an NBA offense, the Spurs are boring because of their almost robotic efficiency. To quote Sharp:

All of those stats debates come back to the same truth: Basketball's a balance of art and science. And the Spurs live at one extreme on that spectrum.

The fallacy in that quote is to assume that there's not a little science to art. A ballet is a ballet only if it's highly choreographed. A movie is not a movie unless some aspects of it conform to certain parameters. The same happens with music. Even the people that break from every one of those parameters are still using them as a guideline. And to master any kind of art form requires practice and repetition. The Spurs are at a point where they realized that it's better to play a few beautiful songs perfectly instead of trying to play a bunch of different songs and failing most of the time. Does that make them boring musicians? Only to people that don't actually like the songs, but the feeling of controlled chaos they experience when watching a performance go badly.

By now, this post is dangerously close to becoming an elitist manifesto about the Spurs being a thinking man's team and painting people that don't enjoy them as ignoramuses that don't know the first thing about basketball. That's not my intention at all. What I'm trying to say is that while the Spurs are not inherently fun like teams where unpredictability is a major factor, they can be as enjoyable as any other team in the league if the watcher is willing to adjust his expectations. If you are craving hero ball moments, the Spurs are definitely going to disappoint. What the Spurs offer is a more nuanced joy, one that doesn't give the watcher the immediate thrill of a Blake Griffin dunk but can perhaps expand his knowledge of the game.

I appreciate the efforts of writers trying to form some sort of consensus as to the overall boring quality of the Spurs, but it can never be done. The level of enjoyment you get out of these Spurs is not dependant of how well they move the ball, but on how much every individual enjoys crisp ball movement and their willingness to follow what is going on away from the ball. That's why Pop answers with a "We don't care" to questions about how he feels that the Spurs are not getting that much attention. It's not that he enjoys being considered boring; it's that he knows that there's nothing he can do to change that perception. People make up their minds about how much fun they are going to have watching a Spurs game way before the tip off.

Wednesday 5/16 Loser Thread

Good evening, fellow Pounders! We're all obviously happy that the Spurs won last night, but now it's time to talk about some other things. Like these things:

If you haven't already, please read this piece on Tim Duncan by Sports Illustrated's Chris Ballard. It's AMAZINE.

In other news, Bruno of SpursTalk tells us that Nando De Colo's agent may have spilled the beans about part of the Spurs' offseason plan.

But wait, there's more!

There are also a couple of playoff games tonight, and even though they don't involve the Spurs, they indirectly affect the Spurs. Plus, it's fun to laugh at the misery of other teams.

Celtics @ 76ers: 6 PM Spurs time

Lakers @ Thunder: 8:30 PM Spurs time

And remember the rules: there are no rules.

Oh look, the jump was pointless!

Morning Rehash: Spurs Awake and (finally) Playing

Welcome to the first of hopefully many home playoff Morning Rehash segments, a supplemental post covering notes, quotes, and personal observations from pre-game to post-game. I'll also fill you in on some of my own experiences because that's what the people really want, right? Right.

Welcome to the Opening Hash

Cicero once said "rashness belongs to the youth" and "prudence to old age."

Prudence. Patience. Conservatism.

A contradictory string of words that seem ill-fit for a Spurs unit that has blistered the NBA scoring statistics all year but yet still well rooted in the mindset of the team. While some viewed and treated the 66 games in 123-124 days season as a sprint, the Spurs worked relentlessly at mitigating the stress. With the injury-plagued Spring of 2011 still fresh in their minds, San Antonio committed to the development of team depth from the start. If the team couldn't rely on players outside the Big Three, Coach Popovich knew the season would both be painful and short lived. And while some would argue gambling on the development of so many unknowns to be risky, it was the safest bet Pop could make.

Now lauded as possibly their deepest squad ever, the San Antonio Spurs are steamrolling to their goal of a fifth title. With the game one victory over the Clippers, the Spurs are now 43-7 since their much referenced overtime loss to the Dallas Mavericks. An impressive streak featuring two forfeited 11-game winning streaks and still-kicking 15 game rampage, something that past Spurs' teams would be proud of (even though they wouldn't acknowledge it). But unlike the title teams of old, this squad thrives on a high-octane offense rather than an über defense.

The Spurs finished the regular season second in the league in both team scoring (103.7 PPG) and point differential (+7.2). Five games into the playoffs, those numbers are sitting at 102.3 and +16.0 respectively. But the Spurs aren't just running up and down the floor shooting wildly a la 2010 Phoenix Suns. It's still the same methodical approach that the defensive juggernauts of the Naughts applied day in, day out.

Hold tight and steady. Lock in. Exhale. Squeeeeze the trigger.

Shootaround Notes

Good Lord, the Spurs are systematic. Spurs players arrived on the court every five minutes to get their last workout in. Danny Green and Gary Neal at 6:45. Parker at 6:50 and Duncan at 6:55. Coach Vaughn worked solely with Neal on pull-up jumper and quick release 3-pointers. Danny planted himself in the corner hitting jumpers and driving base. The mid-range game was Parker's focus while Duncan went through his usual routine of test firing each weapon in his arsenal. By the time 7:00 hit, Green and Neal were walking of the court as Patty Mills started warming up.

On the other side of the court, a handful of Clippers were casually shooting the ball at different spots while Reggie Evans put some moderate work in at the post. Evans was one of the first ones out and was really the only one left when I went back to media room sometime after 7:00 PM. This wasn't laziness or disorganization on the part of Los Angeles. The Clippers put in some light, structured work early but only enough to get the bodies and minds fired up. Del Negro had no interest in sapping any more strength from an already weary Clippers team.

Standard Pop Pre-Game Interview Quote

It made it tougher on the assistants than it did on me. They did most of the work. I just call the timeouts.

- Pop on if the prolonged Clippers/Grizzlies series made game planning tougher.

Preliminary Acts

Dinner: Teriyaki Chicken with Shitake Mushroom Soup. Coffee, black.

National Broadcast Note: TNT's presence around the court was practically non-existent; Unlike ESPN, who would iron brand the fan's foreheads if they could.

Crowd Gimmick: "It's Electrifying!" team signs/noisemakers. The fans' voices were much louder than these things.

In Attendance: David Robinson, Sean Elliott, Jimmy Goldstein

Show of Force: Spurs' fans must have been anxious for a game because the AT&T was completely full before tipoff.

Spurs fans are by far the most engaged fans in basketball, from opening tip to final buzzer.

Game Hash

Early national posts are running with the general line of "what rust?" - As if the Spurs went out there and manhandled the mangled and exhausted Clippers to the same tune the Oklahoma City Thunder belted out Monday night. Maybe I'm a cynic (yes) or maybe I'm just used to the ruthless T-1000-esque efficiency of the San Antonio offense but last night's game was closer to an anomaly than the proposed "business as usual" recap.

Throughout most of the game, the Los Angeles big men continuously jumped the Spurs pick-and-roll while breaking off at just the right time to effectively clog both the driving lanes and the passing lanes inside. Although Tony Parker finished the night with 11 assists, his 1-9 scoring performance highlights the lack of looks and the amount of pressure the Clippers defense put on him. The Clippers also did an admirable job on transition defense off turnovers and rebounds, limiting Parker and the Spurs in their ability to run the court (9 fast break points). While not known as great defensive unit, Los Angeles' tenacity on pressuring the ball forced San Antonio into their highest turnover total (18) since April 14th against Phoenix (24). The result was a +6 advantage on points off turnovers and 17 fast break points.

Struggling to keep any momentum, the Spurs fell back on an oldie but goodie mid-way through the second quarter: Give the ball to Duncan and clear out. Leveraged by the clear matchup advantages against the Clippers' big men and LA's dedication to shutting down the Spurs' one-spot, Duncan pounded out a game high 26 points accompanied by 10 rebounds and a pair off "get off my lawn" blocks. This advantage down low and the Spurs focus on the boards (+13) helped mitigate the damage of the turnover battle. Rookie Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw provided a boon on the offensive glass, together grabbing 8 of the Spurs 11 offensive rebounds and helping fuel a decisive 17-6 advantage on 2nd chance points.

The Clippers were unable to find such a rock to cling on to. Aside from an admirable scoring performance from Eric Bledsoe, Los Angeles had no means of replacing the missing production from both Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. On offense, Paul faded from attacking the bigs to slowly passing out of setting up one-on-one matchups with Tim Duncan (3rd quarter). Its acts like this that lead people to question Paul's decision making in crucial times. Despite his poor shot percentage, Paul should have no way differed the scoring option to a Blake face J. I don't know about you, but I'd take a contested Tony Parker floater over an open DeJuan Blair midrange jumper any day of the year.

(via AP Photo - Eric Gay)

This Game Was Over When...

When the Clippers tried re-igniting their inside offense in the late third quarter with Blake Griffin post-ups. While Blake was struggling to get past Boris Diaw, the Spurs ball movement had returned to late season form. Duncan was anywhere and everywhere, pushing the Spurs lead to 15 by the end of the quarter.

When the high pick-n-roll wasn't working and Tony couldn't get into to the paint, the Spurs dialed up #21 to take over the game. When in the game, Duncan stabilized an erratic offense and kept the Spurs on top.

The maestro of the Lob City Orchestra failed to get any consistent offense and too often contributed to the Clippers poor decision making with passes and shoot selection. Sure, he had 10 dimes and a handful of steals but Paul failed to take control of numerous scoring opportunities. His abstinence from taking advantage of match-ups late in the game help earned him this award.

If I Had to Make Up a Word/Phrase for this Game, it Would be...

Rust-astic. Looking good while throwing every ball to the wrong colored jersey.

Bird is the Word (Tweets of the Game)

@LeighEllis: Boris Diaw is just too athletic for Blake Griffin.

@thegnc: Tim Duncan is FUN with GEOMETRY.

@netw3rk: The Spurs are a basketball team for hardcore basketball fans. That's really what I'm saying. They're like Fugazi.

@FredrickThuglas: Tim Duncan is going to body the clippers in the 2nd half, then drive home in his hybrid & enjoy a cold glass of milk & a John Grisham Novel.

Odds, Ends, & Other Rubbish

During the individual practices, Tim Duncan made it a point to harass Parker during his jumpers. A few swipes at the ball, a one-arm hug, and an ear lobe twist.

James Anderson saw some early court time in the 1st quarter... but only to intentionally foul Kenyon Martin. James was banished back to the bench immediately.

Whether you call it dirty or competitive. Chris Paul gets his hands up into the ball handler's face as much as he can get away with.

Off the ball in transition, Paul loves to run players out of bounds. Parker almost ended up in someone's lap twice.

Reggie Evans has Homer Simpson ears.

Kevin Hart appeared on the screen, leading a "Go Spurs Go!" chant while wearing a Spurs jersey and a black/silver sombrero. I'm certain he has done something for every playoff team.

Officials did a good job at not falling for the flops, or at least the extremely obvious ones. The Jordan flop in the early third quarter just looked silly.

Blake Griffin releases his jumpers late and not at the top of his jump.

Clippers will immediately score exactly the way of what I just tweeted.

@DukeOfBexar: #Clippers O looks better with Blake on the bench. Outside of a few easy dunks, he has been very ineffective in the offense.

@DukeOfBexar: Thanks, Blake...

Jimmy Goldstein goes where ever and whenever he wants. I was a bit surprised to see him sitting first row in the media room.

Vinny Del Negro is always an intelligent conversation.

I'm buying a top-tier wireless card...

"Well, it's the taking of Pelham - One, two, three. If You want a doodoo rhyme then come see me..."

(via AP Photo - Eric Gay)

Going into Game 2, the Spurs need to...

Apply patience to the passing game to counter the press defense while maintaining dominance on the defensive boards. Shot distribution, both assists and spots on the floor, will be important as well. Keeping the offense balanced in and out will help limit the effectiveness of the hyper Clippers defense as well as their offense. While it was great the Spurs knocked down 13 shots from deep, Lob City is not a team you want to get into a race with off of long bounces. Despite the injuries, San Antonio witnessed Los Angeles' willingness and ability to run the floor.

If not for the spanking-worthy mistakes made by the backcourt, the Spurs might have been able to knock out a 20+ point victory over a tired and injury riddled Clippers team. I say this even despite the lack of production from Parker. San Antonio is just too deep and too steady for Los Angeles. Originally, I thought this series over in five but I'm now leaning more towards a Spurs sweep.

Go Spurs Go!

There's already an understanding of the method to Gregg Popovich's madness; it's seeing the results of said "insanity" that ties all the pieces together like a nice Persian rug on the hardwood. All those nights Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker sat in street clothes next to their fearless leader, all those mornings after when incredulous critics couldn't grasp the idea of their team's coach being so seemingly careless with the West's top seed by sitting his stars, this is where we start to see the end for which the means were intended. The second round of the playoffs began last night, and despite this being a Los Angeles team few are accustomed to seeing at this point of the season, there's nothing different about the time of year. The playoffs are still the playoffs. Jimmy Goldstein is still Jimmy Goldstein. And Tim Duncan? Well, he was vintage Timmy.

The 36-year-old veteran put in 26 points and 10 rebounds against the youthful, but overmatched, Clipper front line, and the San Antonio Spurs shook off eight days of rust to roll Los Angeles 108-92 and take a 1-0 series lead. It wasn't the warmest of welcomes for the visiting Clippers - who are in the second round of the playoffs for only the second time in franchise history - but it was perhaps appropriate. There is an undoubted youth movement in this league, but the old guard, the one still led by Duncan and Popovich, isn't quite ready for the change.

"Tim was solid as usual. He's played like that all year long," Popovich said about his security blanket of 15 years. "He's not going to do anything that's going to be a highlight film for TV, but highlight film for coaches, possibly. Just being solid, making a great pass, playing the defense that he did, rebounding; he's the anchor."

And it's been that simple since 1997, when the two forged the relationship that still exists today. Through the doors has come player after player, assistant after assistant, fan after fan, but Duncan has always remained that steady force. And in this game, after a somewhat sloppy first half, it was once again Duncan and Ginobili that righted the ship as they've done for years.

The Spurs have been machine-like over the past month, if not all season. And while it wasn't the typically efficient game this team has made a habit of playing, it got the job done. All machines go cold without consistent use, anyway. For San Antonio, the first half was just the grease needed to get it humming again. The Spurs outscored the Clippers 30-23 in the third quarter behind 17 points from Duncan and Ginobili combined (Manu scored 22 points total) and stretched an eight-point halftime lead to 15, 87-72, heading into the final frame. Despite a Clipper comeback bid that featured a 10-0 Los Angeles run early in the fourth, San Antonio was too much to overcome after pushing the lead out to 18 points to start the quarter.

"It was good. They made a run right back at us, though," Duncan said of his team's third-quarter run and the Clippers' comeback attempt. "They played well, they never gave up, they shot the ball there and got themselves back into it. It was great to close it out the way we did but we knew, defensively, we had to do a better job. That's what kind of keyed our run."

While the defense continued its underrated strong play last night, it was the team's shooting from deep that changed the complexion of this game and propelled San Antonio to its fifteenth consecutive win. If rust was to be felt in one area in particular, one would think it would be in the shooting department, an area of the game very dependent on rhythm. But the Spurs hit 13 three-pointers last night, tying a playoff franchise record last recorded on May 22, 2007, against the Utah Jazz.

"We know they're going to be very physical, we know they're going to pack it into the lane and (Parker) did a great job of kind of getting in there and drawing people in and finding shooters, and obviously our guys shot the ball well," Duncan said. "That's the way we want to play the game. That's the way we want to move the ball. We want to share the ball and we have some very good shooters."

While Parker did a good job of getting in the lane and finding open shooters, his own jumper wasn't falling. TP scored just seven points on 1-for-9 shooting and had a difficult time getting his own offense going with the always pesky Chris Paul in his hip pocket all night. But the old story continues to re-tell itself. Even when a member of the Big 3 isn't clicking along at the usual pace, this team's depth is extraordinary. 20-year-old rookie Kawhi Leonard and young journeyman Danny Green are proving to be much more than regular-season contributors. There's always a concern that the bright lights of the postseason might be too much to handle for young players on teams with championship aspirations, but the limelight only seems to be nurturing these two. Leonard and Green scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, and once again made huge contributions on the defensive end to help push their team to the win. Their blend of size and athleticism was something sorely needed on last year's Spurs team that was bounced in the opening round, and the two swingmen have proven to be the remedy for what ailed San Antonio.

Green and Leonard remain composed even in the brightest light's glare.

Soobum Im-US PRESSWIRE

via cdn1.sbnation.com

While Green acknowledged the importance of what he and Leonard bring to the table, he said the two know their roles and exactly where to fall in line.

"We just come in with a lot of energy and, you know, follow Tony and Timmy's lead. And then Manu comes off the bench and he does his thing," Green said. "We're a pretty deep team and I think it helps that we have guys rotating out, staying fresh and we're able to have that energy."

And therein lies the luxury the Spurs possess. It's not often you see this type of blend of youth and experience on a team whose ultimate goal is nothing less than a River Walk parade. And watching the two dynamics - the two elements of young and old that depend so much on one another - evolve has become a must-watch for the true basketball fan. What this team does isn't flashy or cocky, nor does it necessarily lend itself to a product popular for television consumption. But that's always the way it's been in San Antonio.

So here the Spurs are again, one step closer to their ultimate goal nearly 13 years after Duncan and Pop got their first ring. While Father Time has had its impact on one of the game's greatest players, it appears it hasn't quite been enough to expedite the widely expected ushering out of one of the league's most successful franchises over the last 15 years. There are very few flashy dunks (in fact there were as many missed dunks as made dunks by the Spurs in this one) or highlight alley-oops, but this team is once again on the championship trail as summer approaches. And there's plenty of gas left in the tank.

Just ask Lob City.

Game notes:

- Boris Diaw had one of, if not the best game of his brief Spurs career. While he did not shoot the ball particularly well (just 3-for-9 from the floor), he led the team in rebounding (12) and was second in assists (5). His spacing was great, he never really looked lost or out of place and he seemed to have a real comfort level on the floor. Amazing what a week of practice can do.

- Eric Bledsoe continued his strong play against the Spurs. The second-year guard had 23 points to lead the Clippers, as well as five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot. He's a tough matchup for the second-unit backcourt of San Antonio and has been a real problem for any ball-handler not named Parker or Ginobili.

- The Spurs pretty well dominated the glass 47-34 against a team with a strong front line. The team's last loss on April 11 that featured the 60-33 rebounding deficit sure does feel like a long time ago. Well, maybe that's because it kind of is. The point being: San Antonio is really rebounding the ball well right now, especially, as usual, on the defensive side of things. The 11 offensive boards and 17 second-chance points weren't bad, either.
