Bruins look to turn things around vs. Buffalo

The Bruins will try to snap a 3-game skid (0-2-1) tonight when they host the Buffalo Sabres at TD Garden. Buffalo, led by the strong play of goaltender Ryan Milller, is off to an impressive 9-3-1. The Sabres will try to move on from a 5-2 loss to the Flyers last night. While Ryan Miller has held the fort for Buffalo so far this season, it appears that recent call up Jhonas Enroth will get the start in goal, while Tuukka Rask will get the start in net for the B's.

Patrice Bergeron scored with 51.7 seconds left in regulation to keep the Bruins from suffering three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1929 and force overtime, but ultimately the Bruins would fall in the shootout.

Montreal appeared to score the game's opening goal 1:41 into the game when Glen Metropolit put the puck past Thomas, but the goal was quickly waved off due to Travis Moen's contact with Tim Thomas in the crease.

Metropolit got one for real with 2:28 left in the first period when Dennis Wideman and Matt Hunwick did their best keystone cops impression as Wideman skated backwards into Hunwick out near the blue line to create an odd man rush. Andrei Kostitsyn broke in, took the puck behind the net and found a wide open Glen Metropolit, who had an open net to work with.

The Bruins appeared to have tied it up with 2:25 left in the second period when Carey Price had trouble covering up the puck and Patrice Bergeron tapped the puck past the goal line, however the goal came off the pegs and was waved off after it was determined to have gone in through the side of the net and not between the goal posts.

Much like Glen Metropolit after his goal was disallowed, Patrice Bergeron got one that counted to tied it up with 51.7 seconds left in regulation when he put home a rebound to score the Bruins' first goal in nearly 3 games.

Despite some solid scoring opportunities in overtime, neither team could find the back of the net. Things got a little interesting after the final whistle when Daniel Paille shot well after the whistle and the Habs understandable took exception to it. A little bit a scrum ensued, but cooler heads prevailed.

The Bruins have signed goalie Tuukka Rask to a 2-year contract extension through the end of the '11-'12 season. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed yet, but according Kevin Paul Dupont's sources the contract is likely worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.3 million (which in my opinion is an absolute steal).

Bruins center David Krejci has been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus and will not play tonight. Krejci began to feel sick after Tuesday night's 2-0 loss in Detroit. Fluto Shinzawa played a little game of 6 degrees of Swine Flu and traced it back to the Edmonton Oliers, who have had H1N1 sweep through their room recently and have played both the Bruins and Red Wings in the past week. Either he got it from those filthy Oilers or maybe he just hooked up with a fat pig in Detroit (that is how you get Swine Flu, right?).

The Bruins' couldn't seem to get anything going offensively yet again tonight as Chris Osgood and the Detroit Red Wings shutout the B's 2-0.

Detroit scored on the power play with 5:39 left in the first period to open the scoring. Marco Sturm was sent off at 14:19 for a blatant hook. On the ensuing face-off, Henrik Zetterberg's shot from left circle just two seconds into the power play gave the Wings the 1-0 lead.

The Red Wings made it 2-0 3:22 later when Pavel Datsuyk skated right down the middle of the ice splitting the Bruins' defense and left a drop pass for Tomas Holmstrom, who beat a sprawling Tim Thomas.

The Bruins are in Detroit to take on the Red Wings tonight at Joe Louis Arena. The perennial powerhouse Detroit Red Wings have looked rather mediocre this season and are off to a 5-4-3 start. As if living in Detroit wasn't bad enough, now the Red Wings aren't even that good. Hey, at least they still have ~~a thriving automobile industry~~, ~~Tiger Stadium~~, ~~an NFL caliber football team,~~abandoned skyscrapers and Insane Clown Posse.

After a strong showing in training camp, many thought that Vladimir Sobotka deserved to make the NHL roster out of camp. Sobotka was vocally displeased with the Bruins' decision to have him start the year in Providence, but made the best of his time with the Baby-B's, recording 10 points in 6 games (6-4-10) while he waited for the call from the big club. That call came just over a week and a half ago when the Marc Savard went down with a broken foot.

Since being called up, the 22 year old Czech forward has appeared in 6 games and has shown he is willing to put in a solid every night. Sobotka has also shown that he is not afraid to take the body: In 6 games, Sobotka has recorded 20 hits (3.3 hits per game). Despite only playing in less than half of the Bruins games this season, he ranks third on the team in hits (behind Zdeno Chara and Steve Begin).

Sobotka has clicked well with linemate Blake Wheeler, who both had a goal and an assist in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers. After Saturday's win over Edmonton head coach Claude Julien had some good things to say about Sobotka's play:

"Vladdy is starting to find his game again with us that we saw a few years ago and liked. He is more in your face type of player. In doing that he is still capable of making some good plays, doing the right things, and scoring goals."

Sorry for the lack of preview and open thread for today's game. After a weekend of booze-filled Halloween festivities, I didn't get around to writing anything this morning. For the record, my Jack Edwards costume was a big hit this weekend. OK, on to the recap...

The Bruins tested Rangers' netminder Henrik Lundqvist all game, but the B's couldn't crack "King Henrik" (29 saves), as he collected his first shutout of the season.

Marian Gaborik scored the game's lone goal on a one-timer from the slot off of a feed from Vaclav Prospal at 15:51 of the second period.

With today being Halloween, our home town Bruins did all they could to give their fans some treats to leave the garden with today against the Oilers. I was at the game today, albeit it was a predominantly young crowd since it was a matinee game. From the opening puck drop the Bruins established what I believe to be two of their biggest reasons for today's win, their fore check and the tone of physical play.

The 1st period was pretty even with both teams getting a few scoring chances, and some solid defense and goal tending by both Tuukka Rask and "The Age-less Wonder" Nikolai Khabibulin (it feels like he has been in the league for 20 seasons). The teams went into the first intermission with zeros across the board. Period 2 was a bit lopsided in the Bruins direction. At one point the Bruins were outshooting the Oilers 14-8, and were really carrying the play. Through the entire game the Bruins were led by the line of Blake Wheeler, Danielle Paille, and Vladimir Sobotka. They really started to click in the 2nd period. Despite some solid physical play and the better scoring chances by the Bruins the game was scoreless through the first 40 minutes of play.

Period 3 was basically the Wheeler,Paille,Sobotka show for the Bruins. This line was all over the ice, both defensively and offensively. Roughly 3 minutes into the period their hard work finally paid off. With Vladimir Sobotka applying some great work along the boards behind the Edmonton net and gaining the puck, Blake Wheeler cut to the front of the cage and dropped a trick into the Edmonton pillow case for a 1-0 Bruin lead. This line would terrorize the Oilers again about 5 minutes later. After winning a puck battle in the Bruins zone, Sobotka jumped up for a two on one rush with Wheeler. Blake Wheeler made a nice aerial touch pass to Sobotka who put it past the 'Bulin wall for a 2-0 Bruin lead. That would prove to be the eventual game winner, as Rask made the lead stand up for his team. The Bruins only let 19 shots get through to their young goalie, but he turned them all aside for the shutout.

My Halloween themed 3 stars of the game:

1) Zdeno "Chainsaw Massacre" Chara, was an absolute beast today, he set the tone with his constant physical play and in your face style against Dustin Penner

2) The line of "Psycho" Sobotka, "Poltergeist" Paille, "Blair Witch" Wheeler, they were by far the Bruins most effective line for the full 60 minutes tonight. Scoring both goals, and playing very solid defensivley.

3) Tuukka "Tales from the glove side" Rask, was good when he needed to be, stopped several flurrys and a few breaks by the Oilers to earn the shutout.

Bruins and Oilers set for Halloween matinee

The Bruins hope to put Thursday night's dissapointing loss to the New Jersey Devils behind them when they host the Edmonton Oliers at TD Garden in a Halloween matinee. The Oilers led by the strong play of Dustin Penner (19 points in 13 games) are off to 7-5-1 start and are coming off of a 6-5 shootout win over Detroit on Thursday night.

The Bruins played well tonight, but not well enough to get a "W". Devils' goalie Martin Brodeur had a rare night off, handing over the reigns in net to Yann Danis for the first time this season. Brodeur's understudy was up to the task and shutdown the B's all night long, allowing just one goal on 32 shots.

The Bruins seemed to carry the play for much of the first period, but The Devils got on the scoreboard first with 6:35 left in the opening period when Nicklas Bergfors' shot tickled through Tim Thomas' pads and David Clarkson swiped the puck past the goal line.

Patrice Bergeron tied it up at 1-1 2:32 into the second period just moments after a Bruins power play expired. Zdeno Chara's shot broke Johnny Oduya's stick (which predictably set off a rant against composite sticks by Jack Edwards), Marco Sturm collected the carom and threw the puck in the general direction of the goal presumably looking for Michael Ryder at the top of crease, but the puck skidded past Ryder and Bergeron hammered the puck home for his 4th of the season.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until 1:26 left in the third period when the Devils scored on a play that was similar to their first goal. A bouncing puck trickled through the pads of Thomas and Dainus Zubrus collected the puck from behind Thomas and put it in the net for his second of the season.

The Bruins had a great chance to tie the game with the goalie pulled when Zdeno Chara deflected a shot that rang off the post with 36 seconds left in the game.

Notes:

- The Bruins did a good job of staying out of the box tonight, but unfortunately they didn't draw many penalties either.

- The Bruins didn't seem to have too much trouble moving the puck through the neutral zone against the trap. They had much more trouble when the Devils started to forecheck more aggressively late in the game.

- Tim Thomas made 29 saves in the loss.

- Tonight's game was a stark contrast to Yann Danis' last NHL game when he gave up 4 goals on 15 shots in 25 minutes against the Bruins as a member of the New York Islanders on April 12, 2009.

- The B's had 17 missed shots.

- Vladimir Sobotka recorded 6 hits.

- The Bruins will be back in action on Saturday when they take on the Edmonton Oilers in a Halloween matinee. The Boston Bruins Foundation is selling raffle tickets to win a luxury suite for 14 fans. Tickets are $2 each (minimum of 5 tickets) and all proceeds go to The Boston Bruins Foundation and Celebrities for Charities. Deadline for the drawing is 11:00 AM on Friday.

The Bruins will be back in action tonight when they take the Garden ice against the New Jersey Devils. The B's will try to carry the momentum from Saturday night's thrilling come from behind shootout winner over Ottawa.

The B's will do whatever possible to avoid becoming a footnote in the NHL record books. Martin Brodeur is just one shutout shy of tying Terry Sawchuk's all-time mark of 103 career shutouts. The Devils did play last night, but Brodeur isn't one to take too many night offs (and their back-up is Yann Danis). I would expect to see Marty in goal tonight gunning to tie the all-time record.

I'm not sure how legit this is, but someone on HFBoards posted what appears to be the seating chart for the Winter Classic at Fenway Park. According to the chart, ticket prices range from $50 for dugout box seats (great seats for baseball, but not hockey) to $350 for EMC Club seats and Green Monster seats.
