Bait Shop - New Fishing Movie Discovered

This one came under the radar back in September as a DVD only release. Bait shop starts Bill Engvall and Billy Ray Cyrus. It's about a bait shop owner who enters a fishing tournament in order save his shop from foreclosure. I'm sure there are some good laughs, and probably more if your a redneck or watch it drunk. So far, our users are rating it a 3.9 out of 10.

Volleyball Movie - Impact Point was released yesterday, July 8th, starring Brian Austin Green (Beverly Hills 90210) and Melissa Keller.

Official Synopsis: The only thing that Kelly Reyes (Melissa Keller) has ever thought about was playing beach volleyball. Then one day when a mysterious reporter named Holden (Brian Austin Green) comes into her life, strange events start to happen to her, as well as to the people around her. As Kelly becomes skeptical of Holden, she still must maintain focus and prepare for the biggest match of her life. Is she being paranoid, or is there something darker to this mystery man?

The Express - Coming October 3rd

The Express starring Dennis Quaid (The Rookie) and Rob Brown (Finding Forrester) will hit theatres on October 3rd. The Express tells the story of Ernie Davis who broke the color barrier in the 1960s and became the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy.

Here is the official synopsis that Universal passed on to me:

Based on a true story, The Express follows the extraordinary life of college football hero Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. His fight for equality and respect forever changed the face of American sports, and his story continues to inspire new generations.

Raised in poverty in Pennsylvania coal-mining country, Davis hurdled social and economic obstacles to become one of the greatest running backs in college football history. Under the guidance of legendary Syracuse coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid), he became a hero who superseded Jim Brown’s achievements and set records that stand to this day.

Decorated veteran Schwartzwalder was a Southerner with a single vision of a national championship and hardened ideas about how the world worked. But though he and Davis clashed mightily, he taught the player everything he knew about football, just as Davis helped him learn the true meaning of victory.

As the growing civil rights movement divided the country in the ’60s, Davis became a symbol for achievement that transcended race. Refusing to flinch from others’ prejudices, he achieved all his goals—until he faced a challenge that would make most men crumble. Semi-Pro Released on DVD

Semi-Pro starring Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson was released yesterday, June 3rd. Semi-Pro is the fourth sports movie Ferrell stars in. The other three being Kicking and Screaming, Talladega Nights and Blades of Glory.

Semi-Pro doesn't seem to be Ferrell's best sport movie performance as our users rate it a 6.98. It is currently ranked # 23 on the best basketball movies list and # 212 all-time best sports movie.

Semi-Pro is rated R with a runtime of 90 minutes. Buy Semi-Pro and other Will Ferrell Movies.

There is no question of our love for sports movies. However, how do we pass on our passion for sports flicks to our kids? Here is our list of 10 great sports movies for kids.

Rad - BMX classic
The Sandlot - their is no way everyone hasn't seen this yet.
Cars - Disney classic. Kid classic.
Motocrossed - If your kids watch the Disney Channel, then they probably have already seen it.
Space Jam - Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan, who can beat that?
Cool Running - Very Cool Mon!
Like Mike - B-ball fun with little Bow Wow.
The Mighty Ducks - Hockey classic much less a kid classic.
The Little Giants - It's even got a John Madden appearance.
Angels in the Outfield - Sure bet for little leaguers. It will have them praying for wins.

Redbelt - Released May 9th

A sports movie that was released somewhat under the radar, Redbelt. It is about Mike Terry, a Jiu Jitsu teacher, who has always stayed clear of competitive fighting to run an honorable self-defense studio. Terry and his wife struggle to keep the business in the green. An accident on a dark, rainy night triggers a series of events that puts Terry in the ring to fight off his debts.

The films stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alice Braga, Tim Allen (Home Improvement) and Joe Mantenga (Comrades of Summer). The film seems to be getting some nice reviews but is only playing in limited theatres.

Speed Racers Spins Out

Speed Racer did $20.2 million over the weekend. The creators, The Wachowski Brothers who brought us the Matrix trilogy, were expecting more like $40 million. Given it's over $100 million budget, this could become one of the worst box office busts ever.

The Love Guru

Hockey Movie - Mike Myers, Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake star in the newest hockey movie titled The Love Guru. Guru Pitka (Myers) is being paid $2 million to help get love sick hockey star back with his wife. The film will be released on June 20th.

The Final Season DVD Release

The Final Season (baseball movie) was released on DVD this past Tuesday. The Final Season is based on a true story about the rich baseball tradition of Norway High School baseball. When the school district decides to close Norway's doors after the season, coach Kent Stock has to try and pull the team together for one final Championship.

The Final Season has been rated 7.37 out of 10 from our users. It currently ranks #28 on our all-time best baseball movies list.

Leatherheads Rating

Leatherheads was released last Friday and did $12.7 million over the weekend. It's got a long way to go to make up it's $58 million budget.

The SportsInMovies.com users have so far given it an average rating of 6.86. If you've seen the film be sure cast your vote.

Justin Timberlake to Star in Baseball Movie

Pop star Justin Timberlake recently visited with Astros AA minor league team the Corpus Christi Hooks. Why? Justin will be starring in an upcoming baseball movie titled “The Open Road” and is hoping to gain some baseball knowledge and skills while talking with some of the Hook players. Timberlake will play fictional character Carlton Garrett who tries to reconnect with his father (Jeff Bridges). Filming began back in February. Mary Steenburgen and Kate Mara will also be in the film. Release date of The Open Road has not been announced.

"Justin wants to portray what it's like playing for the Hooks, playing for an Astros minor league team and playing at Whataburger Field," Hooks President J.J. Gottsch said.

As for Jeff Bridges role in this movie…it adds one more to his many sports movies:

The trailer for Speed Racer is here! WOW! The colors, cgi, atmospheres look incredible. The official release is May 9th, which is interestingly the same month as the Indy 500. No coincidence there.
