The start of the Southeast Asian Games 2017 is just around the corner. And before our SEAGames athletes leave for Malaysia, the official venue of the event, we were fortunate to meet some of them via SM Skating's invitation!

We recently met face-to-face some of our athletes in figure skating, ice hockey, and speed skating who will represent the Philippines. This is significant because it is the first SEA Games to host winter sports.

Joining the roster of athletes to represent the Philippines at the 29th SEA Games from August 19-31, 20l 7 are: figure skaters Michael Martinez, Jules Alpe, Samantha Cabiles, and Alison Perticheto, Ice Hockey Team Pilipinas, and the country's first speed skater, Kathryn Magno.

Winter Olympian Michael Martinez leads fellow figure skaters Samantha Cabiles, Alisson Perticheto, and Jules Alpe into hopeful victory as they show off their new programs for the 20l7-20l8 skating season in the Southeast Asian Games.

Medallists in their own right, the figure skaters hope to glide their way into top spots as they join the first SEA Games to include winter sports. Joining Team Philippines is the country's lone speed skater, Kathryn Magno, who comes from a fresh win as the 2016 Tri-Series South East Asia Cup gold medalist.

Flying Trapeze as an After School Activity? Only in British School Manila

I never imagined the day that "Flying Trapeze" can be offered as an after-school activity. But today, it is offered in British School Manila (BSM), a highly regarded co-educational British international school established in 1976.

“As I walked up the 25 steps of the ladder for the first time, I could feel my legs begin to shake. Fear took over. I approached the top of the platform and pulled myself up. I grabbed hold of the bar. In the background, I could hear the words, “ready, 3, 2, 1” and something within me forced me to jump off. For the first time in my life, I actually felt like I was flying through the air, weightless and free. This was the day I fell in love with the sport of Trapezing.” (Izzy Moon)

For the past 11 weeks, a group of girls from British School Manila’s Year 5 and 6 have been taking part in an After School Activity in Bonifacio.

Flying Trapeze Philippines (FTP) is the first and only full-size Flying Trapeze rig in the Philippines and one of only a few in all of Asia. Located in the heart of Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, FTP is an excellent alternative form of exercise which tones your upper body and core muscles within a fun and challenging environment. FTP has given these girls, in particular, the opportunity to try out a relatively new sport which, whilst being lots of fun, is also very physically demanding.

‘With help from our fantastic local Filipino coaches, we have all been able to develop so many different skills whilst being 30 feet in the air - scary,’ said one of our performers. Trapeze relies heavily on understanding the timings of your swing so that you are able to be caught in mid-air at the right opportunity. After only a few training sessions, they were being caught by another Trapeze artist whilst flying through the air!

Last Friday, the BSM team got together with children from International School Manila (ISM) for the first Philippines Inter-School Trapeze Show. It was an incredible opportunity to show off all of their new skills to an audience - who of course were wowed! Although they admitted to feeling under pressure, the students were outstanding and performed with great enthusiasm.

The children’s performance was followed by an awe-inspiring demonstration from the FTP instructors showing everybody the unbelievable skills they could develop with practice and dedication. FTP’s mantra which is used when encouraging the children, at this early age, is one which truly helps to inspire:

"Those who don't jump will never fly." Very close to one of thier mantras, “if it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you”.

At BSM, each child is motivated to aim higher and floating through the air on a flying trapeze certainly made this happen. What an awesome after-school activity, isn't it?

KAYA Football Club Makes Case for Philippines in AFC Cup

Tomorrow, March 15, KAYA has the opportunity to push further, with the Rizal Memorial Stadium once again as venue for a massive AFC Cup encounter. The Philippine side will face Singapore’s Balestier Khalsa, who are fresh from a surprise win over Group F favorite Kitchee.

“I think people are now starting to stand up and take notice of Philippine Football, not just at the international level, but also in the club level,” said KAYA coach Chris Greatwich, referring to Filipino Football clubs’ wins in the AFC Cup last week.

Greatwich’s troops pulled off a dramatic victory in the last minute of stoppage time, with OJ Porteria turning in the winner against New Radiant in the final moments.

“I think it shows that club football in the Philippines is strong and we are more than capable of competing in the regional level,” he added.

The success of the Filipino clubs in this year’s AFC Cup has come as quite a shock to the rest of the Asian region, given that the Philippines was without a legitimate domestic club competition until 2010. Since then, the progress of local teams has been immense, punctuated by recent success against countries that have enjoyed football as a mainstream sport for decades.

“I think we’ve got a great group of players. They are a joy to work with,” said the former Philippine National Team standout. “Let’s see how far we could come in this competition. I think we’ve got the potential, [which we are] realizing now. I think this group is very much up for grabs. Everyone seems to be qualified, so it will be interesting to see how this group plays out.”

Although he felt there was plenty to improve in the recent victory, Greatwich points to KAYA’s indomitable spirit as the backbone to their rise not only locally, but also on the regional stage as well.

“I think KAYA has its own spirit. We are known for our battling qualities—the never say die spirit. I think that came out in the game (against New Radiant). I don’t think it was our best performance, but ultimately we’ve got the three points because we persevered and we worked through our difficult moments and came up trumps in the end.”

To promote health and wellness, thousands, including CEOs and celebrities, ran in pairs for the 8th Robinsons Supermarket Fit & Fun Wellness Buddy Run held early morning today at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. The overwhelming turnout is a testament to the consistently increasing number of health-conscious individuals actively seeking healthier lifestyles.
The annual Fit & Fun Buddy Run is in keeping with Robinsons Supermarket’s commitment to health & wellness. It aims to empower those who are leading healthy and active lives, and encourage the rest to start healthier days by going on a wellness journey with Robinsons Supermarket.

Around 4,500 recreational runners took on the 5KM and 10KM run, including triathlete Nikko Huelgas, who recently bagged a gold medal for the sport at the 28th SEA Games. Philippines Volcanoes captain Jake Letts, and celebrities James Reid and Jessy Mendiola were in attendance as well.

Earth Day Network Philippines’ President Isagani Serrano shared the importance of engaging the participation of people from government, corporate, religious, and academic institutions to rally together behind environmental protection, preservation, and promotion.

Now on its second year, the Pro Earth Run 2015 highlights the local Earth Day Celebration encouraging people to take active lead in protecting, respecting, and overseeing Earth care by running the race for Mother Earth.

Happening this April 25, 2015, Saturday, 4:30AM, at the Mall Of Asia MOA Grounds in Pasay City, proceeds of the 3K/5K/10K advocacy run will fund the continuing projects and programs of Earth Day Network Philippines such as Watershed Restoration and Forest Conservation, Re-Charge Tacloban, Zero Basura Olympics, and Mini Carbon Olympics.

“The future of humanity is everyone’s responsibility. This is why we never get tired telling people that Earth Day must be everyday, everywhere, for everyone,” Serrano underscored.

Fun Run for a Greener Tomorrow

MI Fun Run

Multiple Intelligence International School, an advocate for sustainable schools and the multiple intelligence framework implemented in the United States and other countries, is hosting a run-by-any-means fun run on March 8, 2pm, at the University of the Philippines Diliman Academic Oval.

Part of the “Green MOVEment #4GreenPH” campaign, the fun run or fun walk is inviting mommies and daddies with their kids, grandparents, even those in wheelchairs; and anybody with a heart for the environment to be part of the awareness activity.

“The activity aims to encourage everyone to make a stand to ensure a green future for today's kids,” says Joy Abaquin, founding directress at MIIS.

Kids can wear costumes made of recycled or upcycled materials. The best “green” costume gets a reward at the end of the race.

Cash prizes, medals, and certificates will be given away to the fastest, youngest, oldest runners and the family with the most number of participants.

Participants can choose either the 3K or the 5K category. Both are open to parents, kids, and running enthusiasts of all ages.

Other activities include a performance by MIIS students using indigenous instruments. The school, in cooperation with Smart Communications, will also be recognizing the 2015 Multiple Intelligence awardees. These are personalities who have changed the lives of Filipinos through their particular intelligence in the area of sustainable development.

Green Movement Run

The Green MOVEment will benefit the Cambantoc Reforestation Project, a six-year-old MIIS endeavor that helps in the replanting and maintenance of trees in the Laguna watershed, promote environmental literacy in public schools, and fund the school community’s Green School Movement projects.

“Advocating for a sustainable future for our children is a shared responsibility of all parents. We invite everyone to lead the way by joining the fun run or fun walk,” enjoins Abaquin.

Charity event Give Me 5K Fun Run inspired Resorts World Manila’s (RWM) head honchos and personnel to assemble bright and early at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig recently.

Resorts World Manila officials were participating in the charity event with the aim of raising at least PHP 1 million for its beneficiaries; namely the Pasay City Pasay Social Welfare Department and Buddhist organisation Tzu Chi Foundation.

Led by RWM President Kingson Sian and RWM Chief Operating Officer Stephen Reilly, senior executives, managers, and rank and file members of the integrated resort pledged to make a donation and run five kilometers around the stadium, along with friends from the industry who also made donations and joined the activity for a good cause.

“To end our fifth anniversary celebrations, we thought it would be a good idea to do something we’ve never done before,” explained RWM Chief Operating Officer Stephen Reilly. “On the 5th of October at exactly 5AM, we ran five kilometers and raised PHP1 million for our chosen beneficiaries as our way of giving back to the community.”

Among those in attendance were sports personality Chino Trinidad, who also served as emcee during the event, as well as reigning Miss Resorts World Manila Nikita McElroy and Pinoy Big Brother’s Robi Domingo.

Proceeds generated by the Give Me 5K Fun Run, which exceeded PHP1 million, will be divided among the said beneficiaries.

The Philippines vs. Senegal game on September 4 will be seen at Courts of Inspiration in Barangay Taclobo, Purok Santan, Dumaguete City and Barangay Cabu, Cabanatuan City.

The national squad’s first game against Croatia was also seen at Courts of Inspiration in Barangay Minante 1, Cauayan City, Isabela; Barangay Singcang Airport, Bacolod City; Barangay 32, San Roque, Legaspi City; and Barangay Ampayon, Purok 2A, Butuan City.

At Skinny Mike’s Sports Bar, Alaxan FR also treated members of the media to an exclusive viewing party to watch the Gilas Pilipinas game against Croatia. Challenge Philippines earlier this year showcased over 729 athletes from 38 countries. Triathletes from different walks of life, including two crown princes of Bahrain, competed in the inaugural race.

25 of the world’s fastest pro triathletes participated in Challenge Philippines competing for two million pesos, the largest prize purse in Asia. Among them are Australia’s Michael Murphy and other current world champions.

Villafuerte pointed out that Camsur holds a unique draw when it comes to hosting such international sporting events.

“There is strong government support and we are able to offer a complete and integrated package… To add to all these is the enthusiasm and involvement of the local residents who go out as early as 4 a.m. and line the race routes to cheer for the competitors,” Villfuerte shared.

SXSW Film Festival Features “MANNY: THE MOVIE” Premier

The South by Southwest Film Festival and Conference (SXSW) in Austin, Texas recently announced that it will host the premiere of the Hollywood-produced “MANNY: THE MOVIE.”

The festival which runs from March 7 to 15 will mark the global debut of the highly anticipated documentary movie of the celebrated Filipino sports icon.

Narrated by Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson, “MANNY” chronicles the untold story of Manny Pacquiao-- from his impoverished childhood years in war-torn Mindanao, his struggle to survive in Manila by working in construction sites and warehouses after running away from home at the age of 14-- to his dramatic rise as a ten-time boxing world champion.

As the first boxing congressman in history, his Cinderella-man story has awed and inspired countless fans from all walks of life; and his continuing saga adds only to the checkered and amusing story of this remarkable global superstar.

The film is directed by Ryan Moore and Academy Award winner Leon Gast.

Gast had previously done the boxing documentary “When We Were Kings” which showcased the epic match between boxing legends Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.

For “MANNY: THE MOVIE” both directors had to go through thousands of hours of film and video footage to create a thorough documentation of Pacquiao’s storied career, beginning with his first few bouts in small venues to his most classic rivalries with some of the greatest fighters in boxing.

The film also includes interviews with actor Mark Wahlberg, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, Jeremy Piven and many other international celebrities and features original music from acclaimed Hollywood composer Lorne Balfe (Inception, Dark Night, Iron Man).

The film’s SXSW debut holds some significance for Pacquiao as it was in Texas where he won his 8th world boxing title --- a feat yet unmatched in history. The subsequent Philippine commercial exhibition on March 12 also segues perfectly to his upcoming rematch with American boxer Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas on April 12, 2014.

While trainer Freddie Roach had previously mentioned the need for Paquaio’s undivided attention to knock down Bradley, his fans remain hopeful that the People’s Champ would take some time off to join them in this momentous event.

The assault course of the Axe Apollo Space Camp at the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando, Florida is currently ongoing.

The obstacle course, which tests the astronaut aspirants’ physical attributes they will need to cope with a zero gravity environment, is part of an intense AXE Space Academy training program that 107 men and women from 60 different countries are embarking on in a bid to achieve their ultimate dream of becoming one of only 23 astronauts who will travel to space onboard a Space Expedition Corporation shuttle.

The AXE Apollo Space Academy is a global, year-long campaign to give 23 ordinary men and women the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to space and become astronauts. In a press conference at Makati Shangri-La Hotel a few days ago, international football legends Dennis Wise and Fabio Cannavaro faced the media and select guests to answer teaser questions regarding their expectations for the upcoming game.

This year also brings one rather remarkable twist. With the best of Filipino football, comes for the first time ever, the addition of two football legends: Chelsea F.C. Legend, Dennis Wise, and 2006 FIFA World Cup champion, Fabio Cannavaro.

Both seasoned professionals, Wise and Cannavaro have garnered several individual and team accolades in their time. Cannavaro, a former Real Madrid player has won two La Liga titles, but perhaps his greatest achievement was captaining Italy to the FIFA World Cup victory in 2006 and bagging the FIFA World Player of the Year award in the same year.

“We wanted to shake things up this year by bringing in two international football legends to compete with our country’s best,” says CLEAR Philippines Brand Manager, Drew Copuyoc.

Wise on the other hand is one of the most successful players to captain Chelsea. During his time at Stamford Bridge, Wise won two FA Cups, a League Cup and a UEFA Cup Winners’ cup. The addition of Wise to the Clear Dream Match is actually a dream of sorts for James and Phil.

“When we were still training with Chelsea, we used to watch Wise play all the time. He is like a legend to us,” James says.

“During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, I was watching on T.V. and cheering with the rest of the world as Cannavaro led Italy to the championship,” Phil adds.
