As losses continue to pile up, the Portland Winter Hawks are desperate for positive news.

The team had expected the debut of 17-year-old Colin Reddin to provide one such piece of news Monday, but, as it has been with so many things this season, the Hawks got no such luck.

Reddin was a last-second scratch, and the Hawks lost 4-1 to Spokane. The loss against U.S. Division-leading Spokane wasn't a surprise, but Reddin's absence was.

The Hawks selected the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Reddin with the 51st pick in the 2005 Bantam draft. He signed with the Hawks but later, with the team's permission, signed to play for the U.S. Hockey national development team program.

After a year and a half with the development team, Reddin decided to leave because of a lack of playing time. He returned to Portland on Jan.10 to play for the Hawks, but USA Hockey has not released him. The Hawks claim Reddin's contract with USA Hockey ended after the 2006-07 season, though he did sign a registration card with ice hockey's governing body in the United States.

Reddin has watched the Hawks from off the ice for the last two weeks. He anticipated playing Monday and participated in warmups.

At 1:30p.m., 30 minutes before game time, the WHL told Winter Hawks President Jack Donovan not to let Reddin play until the situation is resolved.

Without Reddin, the Hawks again struggled to move the puck out of their defensive zone and watched as Spokane converted all three power play opportunities.

Reddin alone is unlikely to change the Hawks' fortunes, but Hawks general manager Ken Hodge said he expects him to be a high-level contributor. Hodge said Reddin's status will be discussed at a meeting of Hockey Canada, of which the WHL is a member.

"It's a battle, and we're in a battle," Hodge said. "Hopefully, with the full support of the WHL we'll get it resolved."

Said Reddin: "I'm just trying to go along with what everyone says, but going out there and playing in warmups and then having to come back in and change out of my gear is upsetting."

Portland State's Andre Murray hollered for Jeremiah Dominguez to give him the ball at the top of the three-point arc, not because he had an open shot, but because he saw Scott Morrison parked under the basket in position to score.

In rapid-fire succession, the ball went from Dominguez to Murray to Morrison and into the basket, giving the Vikings a lead they would never relinquish as they eked out an 85-83 Big Sky Conference victory over Northern Colorado on Saturday afternoon at the Stott Center.

Morrison finished with a game-high 23 points, including PSU's first six points in overtime, as the Vikings won their third consecutive home game.

After Portland State's Deonte Huff made one of two free throws with four seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 68-68 and force overtime, the Vikings turned to Morrison and let the 6-foot-11, 255-pound senior center take over the game.

The Vikings went to Morrison three times to start overtime and he scored on all three possessions, knocking down a pair of free throws before scoring a hook shot and a dunk. It was the hook shot that came off the Murray pass that broke a 70-70 tie with 3:49 to play, and then the dunk made it 74-70 with 3:01 to play.

"Scott's been playing really well, so we tried to milk it," Vikings coach Ken Bone said. "You go to the guys who are doing a good job. He's posting up stronger, he's finishing better, and he's making a higher percentage of his free throws. I just feel like he's just dialed in more, and with that comes success."

It also helped PSU (11-8, 4-2 Big Sky) that the Bears didn't have anybody to match up with Morrison. The only player they had that came close was junior forward Jabril Banks, who at 6-7 and 230 pounds was at a significant size disadvantage.

On the play that gave the Vikings the lead for good, Banks was in excellent position on the low block. But Morrison went into his shooting motion so quickly after catching the pass from Murray that there wasn't much for Banks to do but stand his ground with his arms stretched out over his head. And that wasn't enough.

"We had a couple new plays that we put in the last couple days, so that was something they hadn't seen, which benefited us as well," Morrison said. "It was just, 'Pound it inside and finish strong.'"

The Bears (8-10, 2-4) knew what was coming, but couldn't stop it.

"We didn't have an answer for Morrison," Bears coach Tad Boyle said. "He's a load down there and we were giving away a lot of pounds and a lot of inches."

Dominguez hit a three-pointer that pushed the Vikings' lead to 77-72 with 2:26 to play, and soon the Bears were in a position where they had foul. In those situations, the Vikings got the ball to Dominguez, who made seven of eight free throws in the final 38 seconds to help preserve the win and give Bone his 300th career coaching victory.

The Bears were in a position to win the game, leading 68-67 and with the ball when they called timeout with 33 seconds to play, and 27 remaining on the shot clock.

Will Figures missed a three-pointer as the shot clock was about to expire that would have pushed the Bears lead to four with six seconds to play. The rebound came to Huff, who was fouled.

The National Lacrosse League season started 15 minutes before the Portland Lumberjax did Saturday night, and the home team paid for it big time.

Ross William Hamilton/The OregonianPortland Dan Dawson, left, and New York Titan defender Mitch Belisle battle Saturday at the Rose Garden in the Lumberjax season opener. New York won 14-11.

The New York Titans, who were as bad as the Jax last season, raced to a 7-1 lead in the first period, squandered the entire lead, then rallied for the last three goals of the game and a 14-11 victory before 10,893 spectators at the Rose Garden.

"It was a little bit more than a disappointment to us," coach Derek Keenan said afterward. "We talked this weekend about discipline, and that's what cost us."

What he meant was that the Lumberjax spent much of the first period in the penalty box. New York always seemed to have an open man, usually alarmingly close to the box.

The Jax drew five two-minute penalties in the first period; all five resulted in power-play goals for the Titans.

The Jax couldn't have drawn up a worst first quarter in their nightmares. They didn't play under lacrosse rules as much as they did under Murphy's Law.

It went something like this for the home team: They had their first goal disallowed by a penalty, then gave up the first goal of their season on Casey Powell's 35-foot skipper to goalkeeper Dallas Eliuk's stick side with 12:13 left in the period.

It was like pulling the thumb out of the dam. The Titans got the next four goals, and when Titan forward Pat Maddalena buzzed a short shot in with 2:40 left in the quarter, Jax coach Derek Keenan had seen enough: he pulled Eliuk for Pat King.

It didn't help much at first: Casey Powell (his brother Ryan plays for the Jax) flipped a non-shot into the crease that bounced up and rolled down King's back and into the goal. Then Titan transition man Jarett Park fired a 60-foot prayer just before the end of the period that went in at the horn for a 7-1 lead.

All the Lumberjax had to show for the period was Derek Malawsky's fling from just outside the crease with just 1:53 left in the 15-minute quarter, but the period looked more like this: two disallowed goals and two posts hit.

How big is a 7-1 lead? Well, the Jax averaged fewer than 10 goals a game all last season, so the understatement of the season was that they had their work cut out for them.

They bailed enough water to keep the ship from sinking after that, then started to slowly climb back into the ring. New gunslinger Dan Dawson and Malawsky, the two newcomers acquired in the dispersal draft, took Portland's offense almost entirely on themselves and brought the Jax all the way back.

King, in the meantime, was bouncing all over the Portland crease keeping New York shots out of the net. That bought his teammates enough time to get back into the game, which they did.

The Jax scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter, the last a falling shot by Ryan Powell just outside the crease that tied the game 11-11 with 8:27 left.

The euphoria lasted less than two minutes, when Maddalena scored the first of three
straight New York goals to close out the game.

Portland sophomore guard Nik Raivio darted from left to right, picked up his dribble and buried the three-pointer.

Pilots coach Eric Reveno suddenly stopped practice.

Reveno didn't have a problem with Raivio. His issue was with Ethan Niedermayer, Walter Thompson and the defense -- or the lack thereof.

"Stop!" Reveno hollered. "Walt, you've got to fight through that screen. Ethan, you didn't get through your screen, either.

"Now, run it again!"

The defense immediately improved.

Making the most of such teaching moments will be key to Reveno getting his young team -- 10 freshmen and sophomores, two juniors and one senior -- headed in the right direction this season. The Pilots open West Coast Conference play Saturday against Pepperdine in Mailbu, Calif.

Portland is expected to improve in Reveno's second season as coach, but probably isn't ready to challenge the two pre-season favorites, Saint Mary's and seven-time defending champion Gonzaga, for the conference title.

Instead, the Pilots should finish between fourth and seventh in the eight-team conference, and win a couple more conference games than last season, when they went 9-23 overall and tied for last in the conference with 4-10 Pepperdine.

"If we defend and play up to our capabilities, we can compete with anybody," Pilots senior forward Sherrard Watson said. "There are some things that we still need to get straightened out, but I'm pretty optimistic."

After Saint Mary's (12-2) and Gonzaga (11-4), the conference appears wide open. Santa Clara (8-7) is the only other team entering conference play with a winning record, and Reveno uses the term "in transition" to describe the other five programs -- Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Portland, San Diego and San Francisco.

"We're in the transition camp, which means that we've really just got to focus on ourselves...," Reveno said. "I still feel, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that we're in position to be competing for a championship within the next couple years. That's where we're heading."

The last time the Pilots finished with a .500 record or better in conference play was the 1997-98 season, when they went 7-7 and tied for fourth. The Pilots haven't won more than five conference games in a season since then.

"Based on recent history, the bar is not exceedingly high, but I don't want to hold myself to that standard," Reveno said. "It's a process. It takes time. I'm still cautiously optimistic, in that I like our team a lot, and I like our guys, but we have some stuff to work on. What I've been saying all along is that it's about consistency. Each day, we've just got to focus on getting better."

Team-by-team breakdown

Gonzaga Bulldogs
Last season: 23-11, 11-3 (first in West Coast Conference)
Coach: Mark Few, ninth season
Returning starters (3): G Matt Bouldin, F Josh Heytvelt, G Jeremy Pargo
Briefly: Bouldin, selected for last season's WCC all-freshmen team, has emerged as one of the Bulldogs' most best offensive players. He scored a career-high 26 points in a 61-59 victory over Utah, and followed with a 21-point performance in Saturday's 75-67 win against Georgia. The performances earned him WCC player of the week honors.

Loyola Marymount Lions
Last season: 13-18, 5-9 (sixth)
Coach: Rodney Tention, third season
Returning starters (1): F Marko Deric
Briefly: It looks as if the WCC coaches nailed one when they picked the Lions to finish last in their pre-season poll. Of their 11 non-conference losses, six have been by 25 points or more, including last week's 98-64 defeat at Cal State Bakersfield. That's the same Cal State Bakersfield team that lost to Oregon State by 24 last month.

Pepperdine Waves
Last season: 8-23, 4-10 (tied seventh)
Coach: Vance Walberg, second season
Returning starters (1): G Tyler Carr
Briefly: The Waves have become one of the WCC's most entertaining teams under Walberg, who likes his players to get after it at both ends of the court. Through 15 games, the Waves are attempting an average of 22.4 three-pointers a game -- down slightly from last season when then set a WCC record with 843 attempts in 31 games.

Portland Pilots
Last season: 9-23, 4-10 (tied seventh)
Coach: Eric Reveno, second season
Returning starters (2): G Taishi Ito, F Sherrard Watson
Briefly: Most of the key players are freshmen and sophomores, which means most of them will be together for another two seasons after this one -- and it might take until the 2009-10 season before the Pilots start winning consistently.

Saint Mary's Gaels
Last season: 17-15, 8-6 (tied fifth)
Coach: Randy Bennett, seventh season
Returning starters (4): G Todd Golden, G Wayne Hunter, F Ian O'Leary, F Diamon Simpson
Briefly: The Gaels are off to one of the best starts in school history behind Simpson, the 6-foot-7 junior from Hayward, Calif., who was an all-WCC first team pick last season. Simpson, one of the conference's most versatile players, is averaging 12.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots in 28.7 minutes through 13 games.

San Diego Toreros
Last season: 18-14, 6-8 (fifth)
Coach: Bill Grier, first season
Returning starters (5): F Daniel Fleming, G Brandon Johnson, F Chris Lewis, G-F Ray Murdock, F Gyno Pomare
Briefly: Grier, the former Gonzaga assistant, inherited a roster without any seniors, but with five players who started at least 10 games each last season. His biggest dilemma so far has been figuring out which Toreros team will show up -- the one that won 81-72 at Kentucky on Dec. 29, or the one that lost 76-60 at Marshall two nights later.

San Francisco Dons
Last season: 13-18, 8-6 (tied third)
Coach: Eddie Sutton, first season
Returning starters (3): G-F Danny Cavic, G Manny Quezada, F Jay Watkins
Briefly: Sutton, the 71-year-old coach who is sitting on 798 career victories, is 0-3 since coming out of retirement Dec. 28 to become the Dons' interim coach, replacing Jessie Evans. A victory in Saturday's WCC opener at San Diego would put Sutton in position to go for career win No. 800 at Portland on Jan. 19 and become only the eighth coach in NCAA history and the fifth coach at the Division I level to reach that milestone.

Santa Clara Broncos
Last season: 21-10, 10-4 (second)
Coach: Kerry Keating, first season
Returning starters (2): G Brody Angley, C John Bryant
Briefly: The Broncos have the WCC's most experienced point guard in Angley, the 5-11 senior from Redding, Calif., who will make his 96th career start in Saturday's conference opener at Saint Mary's. Angley is among the school's all-time leaders in assists (417) and steals (148). The team's 21 wins last season tied for the fifth most in school history and the most since the 1994-95 season.

WCC trivia
The WCC's eight teams feature more players from Australia (6) than from the state of Oregon (1): Portland senior forward Sherrard Watson, the former walk-on from Sunset High School whose father, Sidney, played for the Pilots from 1979-82.

BATON ROUGE, La. - LSU guard Marcus Thornton's buzzer-beating, off-balance, falling-down 3-pointer between two Oregon State defenders shows just how maddening basketball can be.

That score, the last of the game and with 12 seconds left, sealed LSU's 67-61 win Saturday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The tough part to swallow, for Oregon State, is how the Beavers played good enough defense on that possession and in a three-minute stretch to stay within four points, yet still missed two gimme shots at the left block on back-to-back possessions.

"I'd give him 500 dollars if he hit it again just like that, all contorted," Oregon State coach Jay John said.

Marcus Thornton, who was 0-for-6 in LSU's 20-point loss Wednesday at Wichita State, found his game Saturday, going 6-for-10 from 3-point range and finishing with 20 points.

Also for LSU (7-4), freshman forward Anthony Randolph added 14 points and nine rebounds, while guard Terry Martin had 15 points and six assists.

Half of LSU's field goals came from 3-point range (10 of the Tigers' 20 baskets).

"It was good to beat somebody like that, regardless of how it happened," LSU coach John Brady said.

Roeland Shaftenaar had all 14 of his points in the second half, plus nine rebounds, to lead Oregon State (6-5). Seth Tarver added 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while freshman forward Omari Johnson, in his third game and second start, had 13 points, all in the first half.

"We had our opportunities," John said. "If were to steal one, it wasn't going to be by much...We had layups and free-throw opportunities that, over the course of the game, you have to convert. It's been a bit of a sore thumb for us. We lost the Iowa State game in a similar fashion."

C.J. Giles, a Kansas transfer, made his first start but fouled out for the third time in his four games. He had five points, four rebounds and three turnovers in 15 minutes.

"He's just way out of control right now," John said.

Oregon State finished with four more buckets than LSU and had a solid rebounding advantage, 43-33. But the Beavers never overcame a slew of first-half problems.

Too many of their 11 turnovers (19 overall) were unforced. Their big men got into foul trouble - Calvin Hampton with four, C.J. Giles and Sean Carter with three.

Accordingly, they sent LSU to the free-throw line too often, making 13 of 16 (while the Beavers were 4-for-10). And going to a zone after Giles got his second foul and just three minutes into the game, they let Thornton free for three 3-pointers in four possessions.

Oregon State led 5-2 when Giles took a seat. And two minutes later, LSU was ahead for good 13-7 on Thornton's third consecutive 3-pointer with 15:03 left.

"(Thornton's spurt) kind of blew the game open," Tarver said. "After that, it kind of stayed the same. We'd make runs, but they'd hit shots."

The Beavers gave themselves a chance after halftime by fouling less, although Giles fouled out in the final minute, and turning the ball over less. Better defense helped, too.

"We weren't as aggressive in the zone early as I thought we were late in the game," John said. "With that, there weren't as many inside opportunities, there weren't as many driving angles, which created the foul situation."
Forget that the NBA's youngest team is slowly carving an identity as a dazzling, deep, everybody-contributes-to-the-win group.

There were two more significant developments Sunday night: Channing Frye finally had a breakthrough game and the Blazers finally exorcised their Denver demons.

Frye played his best game in a Portland uniform and the Blazers won their first game in Denver since February 2003 with a resounding 116-105 victory in front of 13,679 at the Pepsi Center.

"They whupped us," said Allen Iverson, the Nuggets' All-Star point guard.

Although it took a team approach to administer the whipping, the first and perhaps most damaging blow came from Frye, who has endured a roller-coaster season since the Blazers acquired him from the New York Knicks in a draft-night trade for Zach Randolph.

Frye scored 10 of the Blazers' first 12 points and had 14 -- one shy of his season high -- in the first quarter, when the Blazers built a 30-25 lead. Frye had an emphatic two-handed dunk and finished a pretty pass from Roy with a one-handed dunk, but most of his baskets came from the perimeter as he took advantage of a soft Denver defense that seemed to want him to shoot from the outside.

Frye finished with 20 points and nine rebounds -- both season highs -- and made 10 of 13 shots from the field. It came as he filled in for LaMarcus Aldridge -- who missed his fourth consecutive game with plantar fasciitis -- and it came after an inconsistent early-season stretch in which Frye went from NBA starter to end-of-the-bench reserve.

He was brought to Portland to provide low-post depth and add versatility to an evolving team. But to this point, Frye has been a disappointing performer searching for a niche.

"I know everybody wants me out (of the lineup)," Frye said. "They're saying, 'Oh, we traded for him and he needs to do this now, he needs this now.' I have the same pressure on myself. But at the same time, I need to take a step back. Look at everything I've had to adjust to. Look at the all the people I've had to adjust to. How many months have we been playing ball together on this team? Two and a half months? It's a long season."

Frye started the season as the Blazers' top big man off the bench and became the starting center in the fourth game. But after a 10-game run, Frye was moved to the third team behind Joel Przybilla and Raef LaFrentz. He did not play in three of the first five games after he was moved to the bench and entered Sunday's game averaging 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds.

But he insists he never lost confidence and continued to work, biding his time for another opportunity. Sunday's effort was, at the very least, a positive development.

"Of course you get discouraged," Frye said. "But at the same time, I think everything happens for a reason. I think, you know what, life is good, man. Life is good. With everything that's happened, I appreciate the opportunity to be here and be on a good team and be in a great city. My individual problems, or whatever I'm going through, is nothing compared to what the team is going through. As long as I'm winning, I have no problem."

Beyond Frye's breakthrough game, the Blazers won thanks to a team-wide effort, which has become typical during their seven-game winning streak -- the second-longest active streak in the NBA. Roy finished with 26 points, a career-high-tying 11 assists and six rebounds. Travis Outlaw (17 points) and James Jones (14 points) continued their standout play off the bench, and Steve Blake (12 points) and Jarrett Jack (10 points) also reached double figures.

The Blazers (12-12) led by as many as 22 points in a start-to-finish stunner. Perhaps the most astonishing part was that it came against Northwest Division-leading Denver (14-10), which had defeated the Blazers nine consecutive times in Denver and 15 of the past 17 times overall.

"This is huge," Blake said. "This is a tough place to play. I know from first-hand experience, having played in Denver, it's hard to win here. To come in and keep the streak going is pretty impressive. It's a step, a step toward getting to the goals we want to achieve. Every game we win, we gain more and more confidence and continue to believe in ourselves."

Notes: Blazers coach Nate McMillan said Aldridge probably will not play tonight when the Blazers play host to the New Orleans Hornets. When his injury first surfaced last week, Aldridge said he hoped to return tonight. ... Martell Webster was struck in the face and left the game with a jaw injury with 4:11 left in the third quarter. He did not return, but the injury is considered minor. ... The win ensures that the Blazers will register their first winning month in three years, a playing span of 18 consecutive months. Their last winning month was November 2004, when the team finished 8-6. ... After starting the season 0-9 on the road, the Blazers have won three in a row. ... Denver's Allen Iverson had a game-high 38 points.
