All you need is a GPS receiver and you will be able to get the correct time and location.

In the initial stages of development, no one could have imagined how GPS would eventually become part of our everyday lives and how it would be used in some amazing ways. As GPS was being opened for use to the public by former US President Ronald Reagan, he would never...have guessed that a GPS golf system would one day be developed. Well, the GPS golf systems are now available and becoming more and more popular

While playing golf, a GPS golf system makes available maps and any other information about the golf course that is important to help you with playing that particular course. The systems can also track golf balls with implanted trackers in them and it is therefore virtually impossible to lose your ball.

As you can imagine, these digital caddies are quickly becoming more widespread. As a matter of fact, while renting the golf cart one can rent the GPS golf system as well. For golfers or persons who want to try out the system to see how it works, there are some options that they could buy and which are discussed below.

The Garmin GolfLogix System is a robust and precise unit that is also very user friendly. One of its main features is that it can identify the hazards that are facing you on any particular hole. These hazards include: Front, Center & Back of Green; Bunkers; Water; Lay-ups; and, Carries. The screen advances automatically to all of the targets on the golf course so there are no buttons to push or lasers to point during your round. The system includes a backlight screen that allows you to view information easily even when playing in poor or overcast light.

The most advanced system on the market is the Sonocaddie Caddie Range Finder Pro System N030. The system is palm sized and portable. It keeps you aware of the distance from the targets while on course - with one click of the button you know exactly the length of your drive. The system will also let you know of any hazards and trees. The gadget stores information regarding many courses and you can get further information by downloading a particular course to the system.

For people with windows enabled phones, all you have to do is buy GPS Golf Pro. Since the device is Bluetooth enabled and GPS receiver equipped, it simply networks with the phone and there you have your GPS golf system. It's as easy as that.

For all those interested in improving their golf handy cap then a Golf GPS device should be on top of their list. It also makes a perfect gift idea if you need a present for a golf lover. With this amazing technology you are almost guaranteed to cut strokes from your game.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/how-a-gps-golf-unit-can-help-your-golf-game-499874.html

For Recreation, Sports Collecting is a Great Hobby

By: Joey Singer

In this fast-paced, stressful age we live in, everyone needs a little recreation. Sports collecting is a hobby that can fill your spare minutes with interest and offer a diversion to the everyday grind. Sports collecting takes many forms depending on the person who is pursuing the hobby. Many people choose to collect memorabilia from their favorite professional teams, but others collect items related to golf, fishing, and other recreation sports. Collecting requires a certain amount of space, but collectors are creative about finding ways to display their collectibles.

If you have a favorite pro team or two there are many items you can collect related to those teams. For instance, you can create scrapbooks in which you save clippings...about exciting games, favorite players, and special interviews. You can keep ticket stubs and photographs in your scrapbook, too. Other items, however, won't fit into a scrapbook, such as a game ball, team jersey, or a team's annual yearbook. These items will need other storage. There are stands for special balls, and jerseys look great hanging on a hanger on the wall.

You might like to collect souvenir items from all types of sports. Most professional teams sell small metal pins with their insignia on them. Pin collecting is a widely practiced hobby, and sports teams are one of the hottest types of collectible pins, as are those commemorating the Olympics. Another option for sports collecting is to collect antique sports equipment. Vintage baseball gloves are an example of this type of collectible.

Baseball cards have long been a source of recreation. Sports collecting enthusiasts have collected baseball cards, football cards, and basketball cards for many years, although baseball cards were the first. This is such a popular hobby that some cards are worth a lot of money, such as a rookie card of a player like Willie Mays.

Other collectors like to accumulate things that illustrate their favorite recreation sports. Collecting items decorated with fish, horses, or golfers are examples of these types of collections. For instance, if you enjoy hunting with dogs, you can decorate your home in a hunting dog theme. There are throw pillows printed with handsome hunting dogs, as well as with the game they help you find. You may find lamps that have a hunting dog as the base. You can even have curtains made from hunting dog printed material! The same can be done around the theme of golf, horseback riding, whether western or eastern, bass fishing, sailboats, and other popular recreation sports. Collecting is a hobby that offers many options!

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/extreme-sports-articles/for-recreation-sports-collecting-is-a-great-hobby-464676.html

The Truth Behind The Perfect Golf Swing - The Backswing

By: Tom Masters

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/SGufZhUM1YI/AAAAAAAAAX0/79qoCVmhrAM/s320/golf.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5218439854027494786" /> The objective of every golfer is to hit the ball with as much power and accuracy as he or she can deliver. That without falling over - or without compromising on balance and form. To do this, you have to give it all you've got, without making the common error of 'coming over the top'.

A swing where you are coming over the top is where the head of your golf club veers off to the outside of your line during the down swing. This is the recipe for a beautiful slice.

From the Inside?

To avoid slicing, you have to learn how to avoid coming over the top and keeping your clubhead from moving outside... of the target line. This can be accomplished by simply working on a technique which is opposite of coming over the top: come at the ball from the inside.

The most accurate and powerful of golfers can accomplish this each and every time they try, but coming at the ball from the inside may be easier said than done for the beginner golf player. Practice is key and once you get the hang of it, you can rid yourself of that terrible slice shot by making impact with the ball from a downswing which comes from the inside of the target line ever so slightly.

Easy Training

There are golf exercises that you have to practice which will help you train yourself so that you can come from the inside on your swing whenever needed. Here is a simple training procedure known as a swing path drill:

1. Take 3 tees and placed them into the turf approximately 3 to 4 inches apart from one another, and in a perfect line at a 45 degree angle with your target line. If you are a right-handed golfer then the line should be pointing to your left foot. Make sure that you have enough room in between each tee so that you can swing the club through.

2. Now it is time to find your swing path. Take out your 5-iron and initiate a few swings by attempting to hit the top portion of the middle tee. In order to do so, your clubhead must pass between the outside tees in a pathway best described as "in-to-out" in order to avoid contact with them.

If you happen to hit the outside tees then you are still coming over the top and need more practice on your swing. By practicing this technique and hitting the middle tee in this fashion on a consistent basis, you are making contact correctly from the inside - on your way to the perfect golf swing.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/golf-articles/the-truth-behind-the-perfect-golf-swing-the-backswing-469320.html

Can Weightlifting Improve Your Overall Health?

By: Gerry Marshall

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/SGdw8SAFwuI/AAAAAAAAAXs/mHiizqLoq1o/s320/weights.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5217262874258686690" /> Would you like to add a few healthy years to your life? Or maybe regain some of that miss-spent youthful vigor? Try weightlifting for a lift in your overall health. Weightlifting has many proven health benefits and is something you can do at any age.

There really is no age limit to lifting weights or doing some other 'resistance' training that will help strengthen your bones. In fact, as you age this becomes more important to help ward off osteoporosis. But there are right and wrong...ways to do weight training and it is possible to injure yourself with the wrong techniques.

Weightlifting should be an important part of any gym routine, especially if you're trying to slim down. It will increase your metabolism and speed up fat loss in addition to creating stronger skeletal muscles and bones. A good workout should be more than running on a treadmill or using a stationary bike. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, an hour of vigorous weightlifting can burn just as many calories an hour of playing basketball.

Different approaches to weight training can give different results. Our age, body type and overall physical condition will also have an impact on the results. Women, who are increasingly taking up weight training for health reasons, also see different results than men do. Not everyone can end up with a competition form and this should not be your goal. Good health does not rely on competitive condition.

Before beginning a weight training program it is a good idea to consider going to a gym to book a couple of sessions with a trainer. Many gyms offer free sessions to introduce you to the equipment and get you started. Take advantage of it.

There really are multiple health benefits to be gain from weightlifting.

Exercise has long been recognized as beneficial in managing diabetes but the focus has been primarily on endurance training. This is unfortunate because many benefits are gained from weightlifting: improved blood lipid levels; decreased resting blood pressure; improved insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, and glycemic control; and improved muscle, bone, and connective tissue strength.

The Canadian government is now recommending that all women over the age of 30 start weightlifting to stay fit and increase their bone density in to ward off obesity, arthritis, osteoporosis, various cancers.

Resistance training, such as weightlifting increases your metabolic rate. When you increase your metabolism you burn more fat. It is that simple. No matter what the infomercials tell you, the only way to increase your metabolism is by exercising to add lean muscle. And you keep the fat burning furnace going for many hours after you exercise.

Weightlifting requires energy so you need to make certain that you are getting all of the nourishment you need to reap the benefits. You may need to consume more calories than normal, even if your ultimate goal is to lose weight.

While weightlifting does offer significant health benefits, you should not ignore your other routines. You should try to incorporate it into an overall workout routine that includes both strength and aerobic training to gain the maximum benefits and enjoy the full, healthy lifestyle you deserve.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Gerry_Marshall

Running Shoes - Running Like an Expert

By: Sarah Philips

Isn't choosing the proper running shoe overrated and just another trick that marketing experts have come up with in order to make people spend more money than they have to? A professional runner will tell you that this is just the opposite of the truth.

The cheap or "bargain" running shoes are standard. Do you think that there is only one type of feet and that a shoe that is good for Tom will be good for Jake as well? You have heard about the arch of your foot - it can be a normal arch, a low arch, or a high...arch. What about your gait type? It is important to get the shoes that will fit your feet perfectly because such a shoe will protect your feet, it will support them and support your whole body (spine, knees, etc), and the most important reason for finding the right shoe is that it will not deform your feet. Feet deformation is very common among people who wear uncomfortable shoes. Choosing the wrong running shoe is fine if you plan on running once in a blue moon. But if you really want to get in good shape and are motivated to run regularly, it will be best to increase your budget for running shoes.

Some of the problems that you may encounter if you run with the wrong running shoes are:
You may sprain your foot or pull a muscle;
You may find that you have a hard time balancing;
When running downhill a bad shoe can hurt your toes and you may loose your nails.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Sarah_Philips

Tips For Buying Proper Boxing Gear

By: Sebastian Marders

Boxing is such a great sport to get into, even if you are not thinking about going into it on a professional level. There are different classes and programs you can go into that fit the level of your ability. However, one thing that can be frustrating when starting out is finding the right equipment. In this article, we will help you to find everything you are looking for.

There is so much to choose from in terms of pads and name brands, you will find yourself asking, "Just where do I start?" The first...thing to think of is protection. This is especially important for beginners because they can be injured early on and then are out for the rest of the year.

You should be aware that there is different equipment for different types of boxers including children, women, and adult men. It is important to find the right kind of equipment for your body type as it is the only thing that will keep you safe out there besides your moves.

The more important equipment safeguards your fragile areas, and the areas that you will use the most. Boxing headgear is the most crucial piece of equipment for beginners because it protects a vital area as it can aid in protecting your temples and brain.

Boxing gloves are also very important, as you will be using your hands a lot. Boxing gloves come in a number of different styles and sizes, so when you are visiting your sporting equipment store, ask someone that knows something about boxing to help you find the right size. Price is not always the best way to tell if you are getting quality equipment.

Boxing shoes are also a necessity to your gear. A good pair of shoes can set you above the rest. Make sure the grip is good, because that will only make you a better mover in the ring. Shoes can be pricey so try to find a good quality pair, but do not pay too much especially when you are just starting out, as you will go through shoes pretty fast in the beginning.

If you want to find out more about equipment from people that know more about boxing equipment specifically, then you will want to go to a boxing equipment store. It is a good idea to go to a specific store anyways because you will get such a larger variety of gear to choose from.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/tips-for-buying-proper-boxing-gear-454675.html

California Sport Fishing

By: Robert Grazian

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/SEKEXcaVJ0I/AAAAAAAAAW0/xdUltk5hKYM/s320/fishing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5206869657492203330" /> Are you ready to take some of the best California sport fishing trips? This includes understanding the physiology of the body, how it works, what it needs to be healthy, why it goes wrong and how to heal it.

The physical requirements for performance enhancement are complex, with the most important being the steady intake of fluid. As coaches, managers, trainers...and the sportspeople, themselves understand this, fluid in one form or another tends to be very accessible, ensuring hydration during and after strenuous exercise.

Serious sportspeople often train very hard and dehydration can set in very quickly. This can have a detrimental effect on their bodies and consequently their performance. Replenishing lost fluids is imperative as nutrients are transported around the body, joints are lubricated and body temperature is stabilised.

Fluid can be provided by water coolers, water fountains, bottled or tap water. However, other drinks often available for purchase are sports drinks, so called because they profess to enhance energy and replace fluid and salts lost through strenuous exertion. These can take the form of isotonic drinks containing salt, glucose and water, electrolyte, or hypotonic drinks either in fluid form or in sachets, all of which are supposed to replace lost essential body minerals and water.

The drawback with these is that most of them contain unnecessarily high levels of sugar, artificial colourings and flavourings, not to mention the inclusion of the sweetener, aspartame. The safety of using a chemical such as aspartame to sweeten sports drinks, diet drinks, sweeteners for hot drinks etc is under much discussion.

Aspartame, known commonly as NutraSweet, was thought to be revolutionary to dieters in the 1980's but over the years, after much research, is thought to induce problems of excess weight and cause various illnesses including dizziness, headaches, shortness of breathe. Other more serious health issues surrounding the use of aspartame are possible brain damage, birth defects, hyperactivity, aggression and sweet cravings.

Therefore, the idea of using such drinks containing this chemical in a place known for inviting people to improve their health seems ironic. The installation of water coolers in many gyms and sports centres overcomes this and provides an instant thirst solution. Other provisions are the sale of water in bottles, some with added electrolytes to replace salts lost through exercise and juices, which are healthier.

There are sports drinks on the market, which are excellent for replenishing fluids, and salts that do not contain artificial chemicals and sportsmen and women should be at the forefront of promoting the use of healthy drinks. Otherwise, cool, fresh water from bottles, tap or water coolers to prevent dehydration during sport is as effective' and synonymous with health and hydration.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/health-articles/are-sports-drinks-good-for-you-360389.html

Professional Skateboarding - From The Streets To The Magazines

By: Gregg Hall

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/R8KDUeUfCZI/AAAAAAAAAWc/2C7WddkixJY/s320/skateboarding.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5170839709934356882" /> Skateboarding is something different then what it was back in the day it's not just a sport that kids do anymore it's a lifestyle that many people have chosen to live.

Most skaters are under the age of 18 and there are over 12 million people that participate in the sport today. However, as courses open to the public and the price of equipment becomes attainable, golf is quickly gaining mass appeal. This is even more so as America's baby boomers begin to retire and look for relaxing means of enjoyment.

That said, golf is a game of skill and, unfortunately, the cost of private golf lessons still remains somewhat prohibitively...expensive for many new golfers. To learn about some ways to save money on golf lessons as well as get the most for your money before you start, keep reading.

1. Work within Your Budget

Don't rush into twice-weekly, full-round private lessons. Instead, take a look at your golf budget and see what you can afford.

If you have a low budget, perhaps you could get yourself into a group class or share a lesson with a friend. You will not receive one-on-one attention in a group class, but you get the advantage of working with other golfers, hearing their questions and concerns and watching how your coach teaches them.

Another option is to just book one or two private lessons to address any specific questions or problems you think you may have. If you're comfortable with putting, maybe just book one or two sessions to work on your drives or fairway shots.

One other possibility is to sign up for training on an infrequent basis. Take a lesson on some specific aspect of golf where your need is greatest, and commit a few weeks to increasing your skill there before paying for the next lesson in another focus area. Normally, it is more reinforcing to practice consistently what you learn before moving too far ahead onto some other facet of the game anyway.

2. Try Home Study

If you don't have the funds for private or group lessons, try learning at home with instructional books, DVD's, magazines and even online tutorials that can help you with everything from your form during a swing to lining up a great putt.

DVD's are a great way to watch a pro in action and see the full movement of an almost-perfect swing. You can often borrow these from the library or purchase them at a discount online.

3. Practice

If you decide to commit to an extensive private lesson plan, stick to it and practice outside your lessons. You'll not only see improvement faster, but also ingrain the lessons into your memory if you practice your new techniques right away.

Practice may sound dull on the surface. However when you consider that the recommendation to practice revolves around something you probably love anyway, it puts a little extra spark in the enthusiasm for follow through.

4. Get Quotes

Shop around for a good price on golf lessons. Try calling different courses, schools and pros to check rates, and don't be shy about asking for discounts.

Always ask for first-time customer discounts, pay-in-cash rates or volume rates, where if you buy a certain number of lessons and pre-pay, the price of each individual lesson is discounted.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/how-to-find-golf-lessons-for-a-great-price-333961.html

Health: Benefits of Using a Stability Ball in your Training

By: Nicholas Tan

If there is one equipment you should not miss in your training, it is the stability ball. The market comes up with new training tools every now and then. Yet you are not sure if they do work and if they are safe. So for one that is guaranteed to work, use the stability ball.

What Is a Stability Ball?

This is a large and inflatable ball used as an exercise equipment. Despite being air-filled, it is generally heavy-duty and capable to hold 600 to 700 pounds of weight. It is comfortable and gives...good support. It perfectly suits the trainee as it easily goes with the structure of the body.

This exercise tool is also sometimes called as the physioball or the Swiss Ball.

The good thing about using the stability ball is it reduces the perception of ‘working’ in training, especially for beginners. It gives some element of ‘play’ as you get rough with the training. It adds some fun and excitement as you advance in the movements and techniques.

Another good point with the ball is that it can be used by anybody. No fitness level is required. It is very portable and light weight, easy to bring along even when traveling. It is also inexpensive compared to other exercise equipment and it could last for a very long time.

How Stability Balls Came About?

The use of the stability balls for training can be traced in rehabilitation. As early as the 1900’s, physical therapists have been using balls in addressing the neurological disorders of their patients.

Then, in the early 1960’s, Aquilino Cosani, an Italian toy maker, made the ball and sold it, known then as the ‘Gymnastik.’ Two decades after, Cosani came up with a company called Gymnic and became the major supplier of the stability ball to most rehabilitation programs and centers.

The ball then shifted from the rehabilitation to the athletic area, in the 90’s. It was used to condition the body of professional athletes. From then on, the ball became very prominent in the fitness community.

At present medical specialists and fitness professionals very much recommend the use of the stability ball by the public. It serves more than solving physical problems. It is good in preventing you from having one.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Stability Ball?

The stability ball definitely is best to improve the strength of the abs and the lower-backs. It improves as well the functional strength, balance and flexibility of the body.

1. Proper Alignment
Using the ball during training will test the body to make use of the different parts to maintain the proper balance. The dynamic movements during exercise will improve the natural motor reflexes of the body as different muscles are utilized in movement, especially the ones that are not usually used. The challenge posed by the ball is to maintain balance. As one aims to get the proper balance, the alignment of the body parts is also improved.

2. Great Abs
For people working out to achieve great abs, this ball can definitely target the abdominal areas. The abs and the back muscles are simultaneously moved as you work in your balance. Just imagine the good feeling of having a flat stomach area and you will definitely love this ball.

3. Muscle Strength and Endurance
The stability ball can help in alleviating any back pain and preventing one in the future. As all the major muscle groups are exercised, the muscle tone, strength and endurance are also improved. Thus it gives the body flexibility, stability and resistance.

4. Core Stability
This concerns the major muscles that helps stabilize and support all of the body movements. This is made up of back and the deep abdominal muscles. With the ball, no matter how ‘deep’ or ‘into the core’ these muscles are, they are still exercised. This is something only the stability ball can guarantee.

5. Stretching
The ball is a good companion during stretching exercises. With this, you can easily move into and move out of different stretching positions.

6. Losing Weight
Of course, with all the good benefits of using the ball, you will not miss out on the aspect of losing weight. With regular exercises and trainings done with the stability ball, a person can lose some unwanted pounds as the body is firmed.

Health is definitely your most important asset. So do your regular exercises and maintain a healthy diet. Furthermore, have a happy and fun training with the stability ball.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/health-benefits-of-using-a-stability-ball-in-your-training-327056.html

Essential Practice Routines For Boxing Training

By: Ruth Cracknell

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/R6OWVz1pZaI/AAAAAAAAAWM/KuCvhEbHj28/s320/boxing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5162134899333359010" /> There are several essential practice routines which the young boxer must carry out to improve his ability.

Practicing the One-Two Punch

Starting from the correct on-guard position the puncher throws the left jab and moves into position for the right-hand shot. He holds his right hand back to keep his opponent guessing as to whether or not he will throw more jabs, a left hook, or the right hand. The blocker keeps his shoulder high and rolls to his right just slightly.

The puncher immediately follows the left jab with the right cross. The left is snapped back for protection...and is ready to go again. Proper timing is all-important. The right cross must instantly follow the left jab. The puncher must not telegraph his right by pulling it back, or by lifting up the elbow.

The right must be snapped right from the on-guard position. The block is the same as for the right cross. Again, the left is dropped by the puncher only for practice purposes. If the puncher hesitates between the punches, the blocker usually will counter with his left, thereby offsetting the right-hand shot.

The one-two punch is usually more effective after the puncher has bothered his opponent with a series of jabs, mixed in with a few left hooks, or a feint, followed by the left hook. The objective should be to bother the opponent so much with the left that a good right-hand opening is made. When the opening appears, the boxer should let the right fly without hesitation, and without trying to punch too hard. Stress to your boys that they must not punch hard, but fast, letting the speed provide the punching power.

Left to the Body

A left to the body is usually a dangerous offensive punch to lead with, but it is effective as a counter punch when slipping a left jab. To be on the safe side, warn your boys that they should never lead with a left jab to the body because of the danger of a right-hand counter. But they may use the left after slipping the opponent's left jab, then countering with the left to the body.

Practicing the Left Counter to the Body

Both boys start off from the regular on-guard position

The puncher leads off with a left jab and the counter puncher moves his head to the right, just enough to slip the jab. The counter puncher throws his own left jab to the heart of his opponent.

The original puncher drops his right glove to his body to block the left counter. The same twisting motion of the fist is used by the boxer when executing both the left and the right to the body, as well as when punching the left and the right to the head. This step should be practiced over and over again so that the counter puncher will be able to duck and counter instinctively.

Right to the Body

The right to the body is also a dangerous punch with which to lead off, but it is effective as another counter punch after a left hand is thrown. This punch is really punishing and often ends a bout if executed correctly. It is difficult to train boys to punch to the body rather than to the head, but once they learn to do a good job of body punching, it certainly pays dividends.

We often ask: "Why hurt your hands on a hard head when there is so much body to punch at?" and then answer: "The point of the chin is only an inch long, whereas there is a foot of body to shoot at."

Practicing the Right to the Body

Again from the regular on-guard position the original puncher leads off with a left jab and his opponent slips his head to his left, meanwhile throwing his right glove to the heart. The right glove is placed to catch the right to the body. This allows the counter puncher to put some zip into his punches. This procedure should be practiced many times, with the boys taking turns as puncher and counter-puncher.

Remember practice makes perfect.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Ruth_Cracknell

Basketball Can Make Your Kids Smarter

By: Bill Parsons

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/R6Ihpj1pZZI/AAAAAAAAAWE/xzbgMFosq74/s320/basketball.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161725120798614930" /> Yes, folks, that's right, playing basketball can actually make your kids smarter. No need for long study sessions, expensive tutors or academic camps. Just send them out to the court and worry no more.

When they play basketball, kids learn teamwork. They learn to collaborate on a goal, and how to play their part. This makes them smarter. They will then be able to go to school and organize a cooperative group that will come up with the best Native American project...that ever was. Knowing how to work together, able to appreciate the aspects of give and take that is present on the basketball court allows them to work well with the other kids in their classes.

Playing basketball improves a kid's hand-eye coordination. This in turn stimulates the brain, causing it to work harder and to thus work better. Improved skills of any kind lead to greater brain power, and thus your child will be smarter.

Being able to assess what's going on around him or her on the court will help them make similar judgments in life. Paying attention to the other guy and knowing how to respond is another skill that, once mastered, will make your child smarter. If they can compare themselves to others, to analyze what the other kids are doing and to improve on that in their own lives, your kids will be smarter. They'll be savvy and more able to think on their feet.

No kid likes to be told what to do, but a kid who can listen to a coach's guidance will be more able to learn from others. Hearing what the coach has to say and being able to follow his or her suggestions makes your kids more open to constructive criticism, a must if one is to improve oneself. Being able to learn from the guidance of someone else is a huge benefit. This really helps a kid get smarter - they're more willing to learn from someone else like a teacher, parent, or even older sibling.

Practicing the sport of basketball, if applied to other aspects of your child's life can help make them smarter as well. Not having a problem with practicing on the court will most mean that they'll be more amenable to practicing other things like piano lessons or spelling words. While no one likes to practice all the time, smart people know that it's the only way to improve. We can't all be experts the first time we try something, and learning this while on the court makes our kids smarter. Eventually they'll figure out that they have to practice in other areas of their lives in order to improve and succeed.

In short, playing basketball can make your kid smarter. Practice, listening to the coach, paying attention to what others are doing, and playing on a team will help your kid increase his or her brain power. It's a given.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/basketball-can-make-your-kids-smarter-320736.html

Advice For Any Tennis Player

By: Jimmy Cox

It will be helpful to players of all standards to read and take heed of the following advice. Every game can be improved!

Advice To Players

A. For beginners in tennis

1. Learn the correct strokes and stick to them.

2. Practise against a backboard every spare minute, trying to improve the rhythm and timing of your strokes, until they are machine-like.

3. Work for smoothness. If you use a full swing with good body action, accuracy and...speed will develop naturally.

4. Never take your eyes off the ball until it leaves your racquet.

5. Never be hurried.

6. Keep racquet's reach away from the ball at all times. Practise, practise, PRACTISE!

7. Attend the best tournaments and observe the best players, then practise, practise, PRACTISE.

B. For intermediates in tennis

1. Follow the advice for beginners.

2. Practise weak strokes rather than strong ones, until you are sure of them. Try to hit as many backhands as forehands.

3. Admit your own weaknesses of form. Be willing to correct them patiently and persistently, even though your game goes to pieces for a while.

4. Never settle back on your heels on the court; perfect your footwork; always have your side to the ball.

5. Concentrate on correct court positions.

6. Play for practice and not for score.

7. Always expect your balls to be returned, and try for every ball.

8. Never give up.

9. Always try to place your ball, not just get it over the net.

C. For advanced players

1. After making your strokes automatic, concentrate on tactics.

2. Keep a balance of accuracy and speed, never sacrificing one for the other.

3. Use your head to save your heels.

4. Never throw a point or be indifferent. Play your best at all times, and be courteous and thoughtful of your opponent.

5. Practise as much as you play, and with some one who will give you the kind of shots you need.

6. Play and practise with good men players whenever possible.

7. Play in at least one serious tournament a year. This will show up your weak points and indicate the kind of practice you need.

8. Enjoy your tennis always. Make friends and develop good sportsmanship and social qualities through the game.

Tennis Etiquette For The Player

A. How to start the match

1. The serve or choice of ends is determined by the racquet toss. One player twirls his racquet while the other calls "rough" or "smooth." If "smooth" was called, and the smooth racquet face is uppermost the caller wins choice of serve or end.

B. Be friendly to your opponent

1. Before the match starts greet your opponent in a friendly manner.

2. When passing your opponent to change ends, speak a friendly word to him.

3. At the end of the match shake hands with your opponent and thank him for the match, or congratulate him on the victory.

4. Never make excuses for your poor playing if you lose.

C. Be thoughtful of your opponent

1. If there are no ball boys be sure to keep your opponent supplied with balls when he serves.

2. Do not return his first serve if it is a fault, or interrupt the sequence of his serves in any way.

3. When you are serving be sure that your opponent is ready before starting each point.

4. Play your best at all times, remember careless playing is an insult to your opponent.

5. Wear an all white costume that will not distract your opponent.

6. Do not delay the game by fussing over clothing, racquet, hair, etc.

D. Treat the officials with respect

1. Never question a decision.

a. Never throw a point.

b. Do not argue with the umpire.

c. Do not show by your manner that you disapprove of a decision.

2. Thank the umpire for officiating your match after it is finished.

3. In case of inability to play a match, default graciously without argument or plea for postponement.

Follow the above advice and you will always be welcome at a tennis match!

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/advice-for-any-tennis-player-313798.html

The Mvp Award In Professional Sports

By: Tony B

The MVP award in professional sports is always one of contention. Every year there is an argument levied in each of the four major sports between the importance of a player to his team and the statistical performance of that player.

In some sports, the result is varied - as with baseball. In 2007, the two MVPs for Major League Baseball were Alex Rodriguez for the American League and Jimmie Rollins for the . Alex Rodriguez, regardless of whether or not his team might have made the playoffs in October dominated the statistical columns this year and was essentially the lock for most...votes in the American League.

It did not matter whether or not he was most valuable to his team, because he was so much better than his fellow players all year long. However, in the National League, the debate was not so cut and dry. Jimmie Rollins put up respectable numbers for the year, batting slightly under .300 all year and producing runs in droves for the Phillies. But, compared to Matt Holiday who hit over .340 with 36 home runs, Rollins was not even close statistically. The argument was broken by who was more important to their team, a category in which Rollins was a favorite - both for his off the field comments and his on the field rallying cries.

How is such a contingency decided though? It depends on how you look at a given sport. In the NFL for example, deciding how a player is valuable to his team is a complex situation. This year's MVP will most assuredly be Tom Brady. With only four games left, the New England QB has inched within 8 touchdowns of the all time single season record and plowed through nearly all of his competition en route to a 12-0 start.

But, does that make him the most important player on the team? His wide receiver core has been tremendous, hauling down catches that few other men could make. His offensive line has been stalwart, giving him unheard of amounts of time in the pocket to make his decision. Sure he's a great quarterback, but does he make his team truly great?

The question is further complicated by players like Brett Favre, who with 17 years of NFL experience has become one of the most respected and effective team leaders in the sport. He runs the Packers on and off the field every week and after a few rough years has pulled them not only into contention, but into first place by a long shot. His numbers are not as astronomical as Brady's but they are equally impressive and his team could very well meet up with Brady's in the Super Bowl.

It is impossible to know which player will be given the MVP honors. In recent years, running backs have been the stars of the sport, putting up record setting seasons. This year it is the quarterbacks' turn to put up record numbers and hog the spotlight, but will they be the most important men on the field?

When the time comes at the end of a sporting season to vote for the MVP, writers, coaches, and professionals will go one of two ways - voting for the player who was most impressive statistically or the one who proved themselves to be the most important for their team. Often times, the two go hand in hand, but there are occasions when a player whose numbers are not quite as impressive as someone else's is so instrumental in his team's success that they could not have been anything without him. Kobe Bryant is a prime example of such explosive talent and importance - where would the Lakers be without him?

Don't assume that just because a player has proven themselves to be better than everyone else that they are more important than anyone else, regardless of the awards they may receive. It is a slippery slope from there to ignoring the value of team sports altogether.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/the-mvp-award-in-professional-sports-311634.html

Golf: The Lure of the Game

By: Savannah Durbin

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/R5HdFHCo9tI/AAAAAAAAAV0/6eQoFSIC_Cs/s320/golf.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157146128175134418" /> Golf is more than just a sport. It is an obsession, addiction, and a way of life. Why do golfers enjoy golf so much? After all; what could be so exciting about walking around a field, and swinging a stick at a ball? I mean come on! Golf is just a boring non-contact sport that old people play; a “good walk spoiled,” as Mark Twain once said. Or is it?

I can tell you one thousand reasons, why I like golf so much. Just within the past couple years, it has become my obsession. The summer is the one time of the year that I look forward to; because I get to spend it at the golf course. Let me try explain to you the lure of golf. I don’t think I can justify... the beauty of the game in words, but I will attempt it. I am going to try and explain why golfers are so nuts about golf.

The Addiction

The first time I attempted to go out on a golf course, I of course, was not a very good golfer. I did take naturally to the sport though, and my friends were pretty impressed. At first the game was frustrating, because I could not finish a hole. I just had to keep trying though! I would have a relatively nice shot every once in awhile. Each time I had a little taste of success with my hit, I would crave that feeling more and more. Eventually, I pared a hole! I wanted to par every hole; just paring one hole wasn’t good enough for me.

The rest of that summer, I continued to go golfing on a very regular basis. By the end of the summer I was out playing every single day. Each day, my goal was to beat my current personal best score. I became a perfectionist at golf, and would get mad if I messed up on a shot. Basically, I became addicted to the game that summer; and golf has been a part of my life ever since.

The Environment

So golf is a boring sport for old people, huh? NO! I can’t think of any sport that is half as entertaining as golf. In baseball, football, and soccer, you are stuck within a 100 yard radius the entire game. In golf, you are never in the same place for more than a few minutes. You are able to spend time in the great outdoors, enjoying the weather, and scenery.

I love golf, because I can either play by myself, or it can be a social sport. Going out on the course, and walking eighteen holes alone provides for some great thinking and reflecting time. At the same time, golf can be played with other people, and is an ideal activity in which to bond with other people.

Not to mention, what other sport can you get drunk while playing… and sometimes even play better drunk than sober! “Party Golf,” as I call it, can either loosen you up enough to hit the ball smoothly; or can be disastrous, depending on how many beverages are consumed. Either way; it is fun! The Social Aspect

By far, my favorite part of golf is the social aspect of the game. I have met some of the most awesome people, and have befriended individuals that I never thought I would ever socialize with.

Golf is an amazing way to create bonds with people. I have gotten to know so many people by just playing golf with them. Something about the game brings people together. Everyone at the club that I work at all has the same goal in mind; to play well! It makes for endless amounts of conversation. Put two strangers in a room together; and if two of them are golfers, they will have an instant conversation.

Not only has the golf club given me unexpected friendships, but it has given me connections. I know lawyers, real estate agents, doctors, and countless other professionals.

Like I said; I don’t know that I can put words to how much golf has changed my life. It just has. I will stop trying to explain the lure of golf to you; and let you find out for yourself. Trust me; once you become addicted to golf, you will understand.

Article Source: http://www.amazines.com/Sports/article_detail.cfm/403151?articleid=403151

Blue Skies For Extreme Sports

By: Mr Hanna

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/R5EN9XCo9sI/AAAAAAAAAVs/t6eAN-HLVQM/s320/extreme.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5156918396124198594" /> Ample leisure time allows for a raft of thrilling experiences inducing different degrees of adrenaline rush from balloon rides to freefall parachuting.

Unpredictable UK weather conditions can be a bit of a stumbling block but add a small slice of sun to the equation and the whole extreme sports arena suddenly opens up to encompass many more attractive propositions. A hot air balloon at dawn across the Arizona desert holds a much broader appeal than, say, one over...the flats of Northamptonshire and a leap off the soaring mountains to paraglide down to the powdery white sands and glistening blue lagoon of Turkey's famous Olu Deniz beach http://www.oludenizbeach.com/paragliding.html is something a fair few of us may contemplate, well at least from the comfort of our sun loungers.

The great range of water-based UK sports tend to remain the province of more hardy animals. It's difficult to beat the excellent kayaking and canoeing in the cascades of North Wales' Canolfan Tryweryn National Whitewater Centre http://www.ukrafting.co.uk and the huge windsurfing community are spoilt for choice with competitions taking place year round across the country.

But how much more appealing the wind and water sounds if you factor in the sun-drenched Saharan style dunes of Fuerteventura. The Canary Islands are home to some of the best windsurfing in the world, the combination of calm flat waters and strong, steady summer tradewinds providing the perfect conditions for the PWA Freestyle and PWA Wave Grand Slam World Championships to be held in July in Fuerteventura and in Gran Canaria.

These prime watersport heavens are becoming more and more accessible with journey times matching, and even sometimes bettering, those to Devon and Cornwall via the hugely congested summer road network. Flights to the Canaries can be picked up really cheaply see http://www.xl.com/champion/cheap-flights-to-canaries.asp with some great bargains to be had following the latest round of UK travel company discounts.

Article Source: http://www.articlerich.com/Article/Blue-Skies-For-Extreme-Sports/35832

Cornhole is Becoming a Popular Sport

By: Dave L. Roth

Most people would not think of the cornhole game as an actual sport, but it is fast becoming a very popular one. It has evolved from a simple backyard game to something that has developed a strong following. Tournaments are organized in many areas of the country, and the individuals who play in them take their cornhole game seriously. They spend many hours practicing, and they are very careful to ensure that their bags and boards are all regulation. It helps them to be ready to compete when a tournament is organized in their area. In addition, there is a lot of enjoyment of the game, making the sport more popular than people would have originally expected.

Since the cornhole game is not difficult to learn to play and not physically demanding, almost any person of any age can play the game... and therefore participate in the tournaments. There are tournaments for children and for adults, and men and women are often divided as well. In addition, some tournaments are organized for individuals to play, and others are organized for cornhole teams. No matter how the tournament is organized, though, there is something for everyone. The entry fees are usually very inexpensive, and the prizes are good. The tournaments can also be organized to help raise money for charities and other good causes, and some people have tournaments just because they are enjoyable and people like them.

There are areas of the country where cornhole is very popular and areas where it is not heard of nearly as often. Organizing a tournament in an area where the game is not generally played might take some doing, but there are people all over the country who do enjoy the game. It is simply a matter of finding people in one's immediate area who enjoy the game, which can be done through advertising and asking questions of others in the community. For those who play cornhole quite often, it is already seen as a sport. Whether it will be seen that way by others, however, may still take some time. It has been suggested by some people who play cornhole as a sport that it might eventually end up on major sports networks and be televised like bowling and other activities which some people consider sports and some people do not.

If a person starts out playing cornhole at a young age, he or she may only see it as a game. Those who are a bit older often take it more seriously, because they have a better chance to network with others who also play the game, either for fun or more seriously. It is not yet possible to make a living playing cornhole as it is for some sports. However, people can win money and other prizes. Eventually, the sport may become popular enough that professional players will make their living off of the game. Until that time, however, cornhole will continue to be played in many areas of the country for both fun and profit.

Article Source: http://ezinearticles.com/?Cornhole-is-Becoming-a-Popular-Sport&id=911224

Ice Hockey Is A Sport For Everyone

By: Jonathan Mancini

Ice hockey is a Canadian sport in tradition and leadership which began in the early 19th century, and is now played seriously in 20 countries. Some of those countries include: Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, and many other nations. Today, it is an Olympic sport and the most popular team sport played on ice. Traditionally, it's most popular found in areas that are cold for natural, reliable seasonal ice cover, though with the increase of indoor artificial ice rinks, it has become a year-round pastime at the amateur level in major metropolitan areas such as cities that host an NHL or other professional-league team.

It is played on a rectangular rink that consists of curved corners whose length may vary from approximately 184 to 200 ft, and its width...from approximately 85 to 98 ft, plenty of room to have some fun. It consists of three periods of equal length. Typically, each period runs for 20 minutes at most levels, but often 12 or 15 minutes in youth classifications. In soccer, a "soccer ball" is used. In basketball, a "basketball" is used. In the case of hockey, it is a puck that is used, which is made of vulcanized rubber in round shape. When all is said and done, and the facts have been looked at, it is clear that ice hockey is superior to field hockey.

The main difference between men's and women's ice hockey is that for women, body checking is not allowed. Even today, hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the world for women, with the number of participants increasing more than a whopping 400 percent in the last decade.

A Few known Facts About Hockey Players

In today's hockey game, about roughly thirty percent of the games players are not North American. Under IIHF rules, each team may carry a maximum of 20 players and two goaltenders on their roster. During normal play, the hockey rink consists of six players per side on the ice at any given time. The five players other than the goaltender are typically divided into three forwards and two defence man.

Hockey players control the puck using a long stick with a blade that is commonly curved at one end, also known as a "hockey stick."

These "hockey sticks" are used to pass, stick handle and shoot the puck, and to propel their sledges. Players are also well padded with hockey equipment. These mainly consist of: knee, hip, shin, shoulder and elbow pads, thick gauntlet type gloves, long stockings that fit over the knee pads, padded shorts that lace up at the front, and sweaters in team colours over everything.

In all, there are many articles, and information in general, that you can find on the Internet about the sport of ice hockey. Hopefully, the information you read here, will help spark some interest in this great game we call "Hockey."It is a game that consists of relatively simple rules, yet at the same time is every bit as fun to play today as it was when it was first released nearly a century ago.

It's a fast paced, exciting, family friendly spectator sport with fans that range from ages 5 all the way to 95. Let's face it, once that puck drops, it instantly becomes a blast to play. In reverse, it also becomes a very enjoyable game to watch. The game's been around for a very long time, and quite frankly, it's going to be here for a very long time. If your one that really enjoys sports in general, but have yet to try a game of ice hockey, what are you waiting for? Put on those skates, and hit the ice! I promise, you won't regret it. Good luck!

Article Source: http://ezinearticles.com/?Ice-Hockey-Is-A-Sport-For-Everyone&id=861060

And You Thought Cheerleading Wasn't a Sport!

By: Steve Crouch

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/R4Jy3nCo9gI/AAAAAAAAAT0/s7W8M15Za4E/s320/cheerleading.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152807223363696130" /> Did you know:

1. Each year, more females are severely injured in cheerleading than athletes in any other sport (National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research).

2. A first-year medical student named Jack Campbell at Minnesota became the first documented cheerleader in 1898. It wasn't until World War II that women started to dominate cheerleading, because the men were off to war.

3. In July 2004, the University of Maryland became the first Division I-A school to recognize competitive cheerleading as a varsity sport and count it toward its Title IX requirements.

Last year, a team of epidemiologists led by Dr. Barry Boden from the University of North Carolina analyzed 29 of the 39 catastrophic cheerleading injury...reports. The majority of injuries (27 out of 29) were to females. Dr. Boden and his team found that the rate of injury was five times higher for college cheerleaders as compared to high school cheerleaders. Injuries resulted most commonly from pyramid formations and basket tosses.

Cheerleading is part of a team sport! You are responsible for "Getting the crowd up!" You perform, you inspire, you make people think, "How did she do that!?!?!?!" Cheerleading has been around since the late 1800s in America and is bigger and better than ever today. Some of the most incredible routines I have ever seen were either at football or basketball games and you walked away from the event saying, "How on earth could they pull that off?"

Not only are cheerleaders usually pretty good looking, but they are also smart too! Did you know that most cheerleaders carry a "B" average in high school and college - in fact, 83% of them do! 81% of cheerleaders are age 14-18 years of age. 62% of them are also involved in another sport besides cheerleading.

Next time you watch the cheerleaders in "awe" as you sit in the bleachers or stands, just remember the statistics mentioned above. They are not only good looking, but they ARE smart students too!

Steve Crouch, Calligrapher & Owner of Award Certificates By Steve, based in St. Louis, MO operates the largest collection of hand-lettered Italic calligraphy award certificates available for purchase on the Internet.

Article Source: http://ezinearticles.com/?And-You-Thought-Cheerleading-Wasnt-a-Sport!&id=804965

Warm up Tips to Avoid Injuries

By: Ranju Kumar

Warm ups are very essential before and after any workout activity. Warm ups activities allow the body to wake up and helps in blood circulation avoiding injuries. They increase the temperature of the body, making the muscles more flexible and receptive to a good workout. Simple warm up allows your body to adjust to the exercise you are about to perform.

First let me tell you few benefits of warm ups:

1.Increased movement of blood and makes the muscles more flexible.

2.Prepares your muscles for stretching (which is very important while doing heavy...workouts and aerobics).

3.Prepares your heart for an increase in activity, avoiding a rapid increase in blood pressure.

4.Prepare your muscles for the next exercise session.

5.Dynamic warm-up helps in reducing muscle stiffness.

Here are some of the warm up activities that will help you in a better workout:

1. Loosening up- It reduces the potential for injury while exercising. In other words they mentally and physically start your engines.

The best way to do this is: Roll your shoulders back and forward. Turn your head to the right and left. While doing this activity inhale and exhale well.

2. Stretching- Stretching is a very important aspect in a warm up activity. It lengthens the muscles improving the range of motion and flexibility. It improves blood circulation and helps in reducing stress and tension.

Some of the common stretches are: Calf Stretch, Hamstring Stretch, Spiral Release, Lower back stretch, Shoulder Stretch, Chest Stretch and lots more. One small advice, do all these stretches for at least 20-30 seconds each.

3. Cycling- Cycling for 10-15 minutes before every workout is very beneficial.

4. Warm ups for sportier: A sports person should include in his warm up, a few minutes of easy catching practice especially for cricketers or baseball players, going through the motion of bowling a ball for lawn bowlers, shoulder rolls, side-stepping and slow-paced practice hits for tennis players, or jogging for runners. Specific warm-ups for sports persons are often designed by a skilled coach in that sport.

5. Jogging & Walking: Another good way of warming up is jogging and brisk walking. Jog slowly after your exercise; make sure that it is done in a lower intensity than the exercise you just performed.

6. Warm up until you begin to sweat. The whole purpose of your warm up is to increase body temperature by one or two degrees.

Doing warm up activities is fun. It can be dancing, running around, bouncing, bounding, skipping and anything that helps your muscle to loosen up.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/warm-up-tips-to-avoid-injuries-295027.html

Exploring The Common Boxing Moves

By: Adrian Adams

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_KSLi51ZVT6g/R4EZKXCo9cI/AAAAAAAAATU/QhRdLf3d-PA/s320/boxing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152427114463032770" /> From Rocky Marciano to Cassius Clay, the sport of boxing has seen the transition from bare knuckle brawling to regulation boxing gloves. The styles of fighting, stances, and defensive techniques have all come a long way since its origins during the mid-1700s. Boxing, which is also referred to as prizefighting, involves participants that are grouped by weight to enter fights that use their fists during one to three minute intervals called rounds.

Today, boxers (or fighters) enter competitions in professional settings, as well as enter the Olympics (after qualifying). The object of the sport is to land the most effective punches and avoid the ones thrown by an opponent. If one isn’t knocked...to the ground (KO) by the time the end of the rounds is reached, the fighter with the most points is made the winner. When an opponent is too hurt to continue the fight, it is referred to as a technical knockout (TKO).

Four Basic Punches

In boxing, there are four main punches associated with the sport: the Uppercut, Hook, Cross, and Jab. When it comes to punches, depending on your hand dominance, there will be varying lead and rear hands in fighters. For instance, if a boxer is right-handed, this will serve as their lead hand. Right-handed boxers are known as orthodox fighters, whereas left-handed boxers are referred to as an unorthodox fighter (or a Southpaw). Below is a brief explanation of the various approaches to punching.

Jab: When the lead hand is thrown from the guard position, this quick, straight punch is the result. After a punch has landed, the lead hand is pulled back quick to resume guarding the face and body. Some boxers will use this technique to harass opponents or determine distance.

Cross: The cross involves the throwing of the rear hand to form a straight punch packed with power. While in the guard position, the rear hand is thrown from the chin, which creates a crossing motion across the body. The shoulders, torso, and hips are often adjusted to increase power. When a cross follows a jab, this move is called a "one-two combo."

Hook: Creating a semi-circular punch with the lead hand and landing to the side of the opponent’s head is called a hook. The punch also involves the drawing back of the elbow and the knuckles pointing forward. The lead foot will pivot during this punch as boxers utilize this move to often attack the lower part of the body.

Uppercut: Using the rear hand, an uppercut is a vertical punch that rises when thrown. The torso, knees, and hips are also tweaked to add effectiveness to the punch. Many efficient combinations are created with the use of the uppercut. The chin or torso of the opponent is often the target for this type of punch.

Defensive Boxing Moves

While learning the ropes of offensive moves will increase the chances of an opponent hitting the canvas and not recovering in time is important, defense also wins matches. The ability of a boxer to effectively avoid the hard-hitting punches of another fighter helps to maintain stamina and longevity during a match. Below, you will come across brief descriptions regarding defensive boxing techniques, such as the slip, bob and weave, parry/block, and the cover-up.

Bob and Weave: A commonly seen technique in boxing is the bob, which brings the head into a lateral position that ducks below an incoming punch. Boxers, who bend their legs quickly and shift their body to the left or right will be able to avoid making contact with an opponent’s punch. Once the punch has missed its target, a weaving motion will bring the boxer to an upright position.

Slip: Slipping involves the slight rotation of the body when an incoming punch is arriving. This motion causes the punch to pass by the head without any connection. As a punch nears, a boxer should rotate the hips and shoulders in a sharp movement. The result is chin protection as the punch "slips" past the opponent.

The Cover-Up: When the face or body becomes unprotected, covering up is often used as a last resort. The cover up involves holding the hands up high in front of the head and chin. Body protection is accomplished through tucking the forearms against the torso. Head protection is achieved when pressing both fists into the front of the face. This defense mechanism is poor protection from underneath attacks.

Parry/Block: When facing an assortment of punching attacks, a boxer may use their hands to defend himself or herself. As a punch nears, the boxer will use an open-handed blow in a quick, lateral motion to redirect the wrist or forearm of an opponent.

Article Source: http://www.articlerich.com/Article/Exploring-The-Common-Boxing-Moves/124467

Extreme - the fastest growing sports

By: Duncan Farber

Extreme Mayhem is part of the Extreme Group (that founded the Extreme Sports Channel in 1999).
