This tip from Rachel came in to the Springs Bargains Facebook page over the weekend:

I was at the Kohls on Powers today (Saturday) and they were having an additional 40% off all clearance merchandise. Not sure how long it will last, but there were some seriously good deals to be had and LOTS of clearance racks throughout the store.

Another fan chimed in and said the same deal was going on at the store at University Village!  Might be worth checking out!

Also, speaking of clearance deals: if you were like me and were confused by the new “Best Price” markdowns at JCPenney, a JCPenney employee commented on the post to clarify how it works!

We should be getting two coupon inserts in February 5th’s paper: one Smartsource (click here for preview) and one Redplum (click here for preview). I’m actually quite excited about the Redplum insert this week – the coupon for $3/2 Nivea lip care is almost sure to get us some free lip balm, and the $3/1 Got2B coupon will be a great one to use at Walgreens starting on Sunday (the got2B line is rumored to be on sale B1G1 free starting on the 12th at Walgreens).

You can subscribe to the Denver Post through Colorado Bargains and get Sunday delivery for $1.25 per week for up to five subscriptions – great if you want to get multiple papers without having to stop by a gas station to pick up extras every week!

The Gazette also offers several deals where you can subscribe for $1 for a year, but if you’ve ever compared the inserts in the past you know that you will want to make sure to subscribe to the Post, too.

It’s Friday — time for What To Make With What’s On Sale!  Grocery sales are slow this week, but three different stores have good prices on lobster tails: at Albertsons, 8-ounce lobster tails are $9.99; at Safeway, 4-ounce tails are $5 (Friday-Tuesday); and at Sunflower Market, you can get 3.5 – 4-ounce lobster tails for $4.99.

Lobster tails probably aren’t on your typical weekly menu rotation, but they’re great for special occasions (like Valentine’s Day!)  Cooking lobster tails might seem intimidating, but they’re actually quite simple to prepare.  Here are six ideas for serving lobster tails!

Boiled: One of the most common ways to cook lobster tails is by boiling them.  Here’s a step-by-step guide to boiling lobster tails, as well as a recipe for clarified butter with which to serve the tails.

Broiled: This simple recipe, Broiled Lobster Tails, is great for first-time lobster cooks.  The recipe doesn’t specify the size of lobster tails to use, but the ingredient amounts and suggested cooking time are appropriate for 6- to 8-ounce tails.  (I’ve heard that broiling lobster tails makes for better presentation than boiling because the meat doesn’t curl up at the edges.  What’s your experience?)

Steamed: Here’s another super-simple recipe, Steamed Lobster Tails.  You only need three ingredients: lobster, butter, and salt!

Grilled: Emeril Lagasse’s Grilled Lobster Tails with Tarragon-Lemon Vinaigrette looks amazing — and it’s rated as “easy!”

Baked & stuffed: This 5-star recipe for Baked Stuffed Lobster Tails uses a seasoned bread crumb and butter stuffing and is baked in white wine.  Yum!

In soup: Paula Deen’s Creole Shrimp & Lobster Bisque is another simple recipe that makes an impressive meal.  (Try serving it in a bread bowl for a fun and hearty presentation!)

Colorado Springs residents can once again get a free tree to plant streetside!  The program is a little different than it was in the past, and it doesn’t appear that there’s an age requirement for your house to qualify (seems like it used to have to be five years old or newer).

Applications are due March 16th, and you can download the application here (PDF).  You do have to pick up and plant the tree, and they should be posting pickup dates and times on their website in March.

This Saturday, February 11th, is the annual Bighorn Sheep Day at Garden of the Gods!  They’ll have free presentations, nature walks, and activities for the kids, plus free cookies and cider, from 10 AM to 3 PM.  You can get a schedule and more information here.

Now, I’m not really sure that your odds of seeing a bighorn sheep are any greater on Saturday than they are on any other day – and the odds are pretty slim.  But, it might be fun to learn a little bit more about these reclusive animals!

I would love to see a bighorn sheep someday!  Have you ever seen one?

Whole Foods has a great price on Chocolove bars, Wednesday only, but here’s another way to get them even cheaper without even leaving the house! Wow, the grocery deals are really slow this week… Might be a good week to challenge ourselves to cleaning out the pantry and refrigerator? Albertsons does have Purex for $1.99, no coupon required, but I’m holding out hope that we’ll get a coupon in Sunday’s paper for an even better deal.
