More film shooting, this time with Seamus humoring me. He just turned eight. Love these (even though I’m kicking myself a little for hanging the banner print upside down). Ah well, we don’t do perfection around here.

Roo is in her fifteenth year. Sweet, old girl. She was slightly less inclined to humor me.

I got my first digital camera, a Kodak EasyShare, around the time Seamus was born 8 years ago and, upgrade after upgrade, I have snapped away like a maniac ever since. So why do I have almost no pictures of my kids? I don’t like photo editing. There, I’ve said it. I love meeting families. I love shooting. I dread sitting down at my computer and editing for hours on end. I can’t make myself do it if I don’t HAVE to. So I don’t do it for myself. (I do have some really great pictures of them. On external hard drives.)

Enter the idea of shooting film. I shot film for years. Granted, I didn’t know how to shoot on anything but Auto back then but now I know how a camera works and I figured I could do it. Or at least I could learn how to do it. I have a long way to go but I’m so happy to have these. Shot on a new-to-me Canon EOS-3 and developed, printed, and scanned at Holland Photo.

p.s. 36 frames of a kid in a bath is a ridiculous number.

p.p.s. I’m 16+ days into a massive backup of all of my external hard drives on CrashPlan Pro. When I’m done, forever from now, I’ll be able to sleep at night.

Summer & Riley

I’ve been super lucky to get to photograph these sisters together for the last three years. It really is amazing to see how much they grow and change over a year. These two have always been full of personality and playfulness but this year what struck me was how confident and self-assured they’ve both become. Both girls were game for a friendly back-to-back pushing contest. I love this kind of sibling portrait. They laugh harder and with more exuberance together than they do in almost any other situation. This session makes me want more pictures of my boys laughing together, if only to prove to myself that there is a flip-side to the fight hard coin.

And, because I couldn’t help myself, here’s their new weenie dog puppy. Those eyes.

I love photographing other families with three kids. Not because misery loves company, but because they have no choice but to let go and have a good time. With two kids, it still feels possible to assert control and gain compliance. But with three? Not a chance. I love the kind of family images we get when the goal is together, not perfect. I love how hard Evie tried to do it just right as much as I love that every time Jojo smiled naturally in the family shots, it was because Sonya’s foot was on her head. It’s so easy to look at these pictures and see what it isn’t always easy to feel — that even on stressful mornings (and I think we can all agree that getting a family of five up, dressed, fed, and to a photo shoot by 8 a.m. is stressful) — kids are so happy to spend some time just playing and laughing with each other and their parents.

First day of 2nd grade!

Impossible though it may seem, here we are at the start of 2nd grade for Seamus. He’s so ready to be back to school after a long, fun summer and he’s feeling mature now that his classroom is on the 2nd floor. He is growing right up the door and, as anticipated, I’m loving seeing how his handwriting is changing from year to year. (Feeling nostalgic? You can see his first day of kindergarten and 1st grade pictures here and here.)

Maggie slept through the photos but Finn woke up to see Seamus off despite my late night application of WD-40 to all of the upstairs doors. Mathilda, our eh-hem *energetic* heeler puppy, popped in for a few shots, too.

Well, my last blog entry was on October 11, 2011. Maggie, the subject of my last post, was a 4-month-old peanut who had just discovered her toes. Molly, the little pumpkin starring in this post, was an embryo. That’s entirely too long. But, in my defense, I do have 3 kids now. Handy excuse if you ask me.

So! Here’s Molly at 5 days old. She’s adorable (see below), is very easygoing (as of her attendance at book club a few nights ago), and has shockingly advanced thumb-finding skills. Enjoy, Abbey and Lucas (because her perfection pretty much guarantees that the yet-to-be-conceived Lucas Jr. will be a holy terror)!

Toes

Big week for Miss Maggie. She has officially found her toes. I know! I said it was big! Love love love this stage.

And here’s Finn at around the same age on the entrance sign to the Mothers’ Milk Bank Austin. What a chunk!

First Grade!

When I was in high school, my friend Adam’s mom showed me a series of pictures taken on the first day of school. In all of the pictures Adam stood in front of their front door. I loved seeing the yearly change and I thought at the time that I was going to do the same thing if I ever had kids. With Seamus, I decided to add a chalkboard and have him write his name. It’s amazing how much changes in a year. He’s huge compared to last year. He’s using lowercase letters. He has laces instead of Velcro. And first grade is the year of the exclamation point!!!

So far my first grader has humored me twice. Here’s hoping it continues. To see how much he’s grown, check out his first day of kindergarten shots here.

I’m taking a deep breath and jumping back in to the blog. Rather than attempt to catch up on all I haven’t posted in the last 8 months, I’ll just pick up from where we are now. I think this one pretty much sums it up.
