According to a post on the "Searching for the Lost Colony DNA Blog" dated Sunday, September 16, 2007 Pat Spurlock Elder donated thirty years of Spurlock Family Association research to the Sullivan County Library in Blountville, TN. The only Spurlock data retained was information that connects to Elder's direct line." Considering that the first issue of the SFA Quarterly was published in the Spring of 1988, I can only assume that Pat must have included all of her research prior to that. I contacted the library by phone and confirmed that the data is there and accessible by the public with the stipulation that it may not be copied.

George E. E. Spurlock Obituary

SPURLOCK, GEORGE E. E., 62, of Shepherdsville, KY, returned to his Heavenly Father, Wednesday, February, 27, 2008. He was a retired service attendant for C S X Railroad, where he worked for 32 years, served in the Army National Guard for six years and a member of The Overdale Methodist Church. George leaves to cherish his memory; his beloved wife, Janice (Martin) Spurlock; son, Jeff Spurlock (Rachel); brother, Ricky Spurlock; sister, Judy Gerst; and two grandchildren, Clara and Ethan Spurlock. Visiting for Mr. Spurlock will be 3-8 p.m. Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday at Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Burial in Brookland Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy to The American Lung Association.

Anna Pearl Patton Spurlock, age 90, of U.S. 60 West, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

She was born October 28, 1917, at Grassy Creek in Morgan County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Warren and Bertha Gevedon Patton. Her husband, Howard A. Spurlock, preceded her in death on June 18, 1982.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Sue and Wendell Watson of Florence, Kentucky; four sons, Billy W. and Lois Spurlock and Jimmy Luke Spurlock, of Morehead, Kentucky, Bobby Gene Spurlock of Paducah, Kentucky, and Larry Joe and Deborah K. Spurlock of Lexington, Kentucky; ten grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Other survivors include three sisters, Edith Wells of Winchester, Kentucky, Katherine Marlow of Norris, Tennessee, and Mary Jo Triplet of Owingsville, Kentucky, and two brothers, John Paul Patton of Cape Coral, Florida, and Warren Patton Jr. of Salt Lick, Kentucky.

Mrs. Spurlock was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and farming. She had been a volunteer with the St. Claire Auxiliary and was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Clearfield Tabernacle.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Spurlock, Lee Watson, Michael Spurlock, Christopher “Chip” Spurlock, Troy Poage, Seth Meadows, and Jake Ohler.

Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Gail Hampton Spurlock Obituary

Condlolences go out to SFA member Dianne Haugen on the recent death of her father, Gail Spurlock. Dianne was kind enough to pass along the following obituary:

A gathering was held Jan. 12, at Island Lakes Clubhouse in Eugene, Oregon for Gail Hampton Spurlock of Eugene, who died Jan. 2 of age-related causes. He was 94. He was born April 30, 1913, in Mountain Grove, Mo., to Joe and Harriet McAntire Spurlock. He lived his early years in Montana. He married Helen Lyons on Aug. 10, 1935, in Eugene.

Spurlock graduated from Eugene High School in 1933. He served in the Oregon National Guard. He worked as a planerman at Eugene Planing Mill for 46 years, retiring in 1979.

Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Haugen and Elizabeth Ellison, both of Eugene; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His wife died June 17, 1989, and a grandson died previously.

Note - Gail was the Great grandson of John B. Spurlock, 26 Jan 1860-30 Jul 1924.

SFA Journal corrections

By now you should have received the new issue of the Spurlock Family Association Journal, Winter 2008 (Vol 3 Number 1). Member Charlotte Santilli contacted me with some corrections regarding the Cover Photo information as follows:

1. M. J. is shown as Mary Jane and also Mahala Jane in the census'. Ken Haas, myself, and others think her name if Mahala Jane.

2. They were married in 1865 in Butler County, Alabama; not the 1880s in Jasper County, Alabama.

3. They are buried in the Mt. Nebo Methodist Church Cemetery, Union Parish, Downsville, Louisiana.

4. Edward Spurlock's full name is Thomas Edward Spurlock, who married Augusta Catherine Carroll.

5. Margaret (Mag) Spurlock married Enoch Alexander Robinson.

James Richard Spurlock Obituary

JAMES RICHARD SPURLOCK, 59, of 619 Taft St. Sidney, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008 at 7:39 a.m. at his home. He was born on November 30, 1948 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of the late James Beckham Spurlock and Betty Maxine (Stires) Minnich, who survives and reside in Versailles, Oh.

On May 21, 1967 he married Mary Lou Lute, who preceded him in death in 1993. On December 31, 1999 he married Annette Kay Yount, who survives along with, daughters; Mrs. Lincoln (Beckam) Poling of Greenville, Oh, Mrs. Charlie (Dawn) Thompson of Greenfield, Oh, Mrs. Tim (Betty) Meyer of Versailles, Oh, and Jami Marburger of Greenville, Oh, stepson; Michael Smith of Cincinnati, Oh, step daughter; Mrs. Jason (Sandra) Baker of Arcanum, Oh, brother; Lee Roy Spurlock and wife Susan of Greenville, Oh, sister; Mrs. Ron "JR" (Anita) Claxton of Webster, Oh, brother-in-laws; Kent Lute and wife Sue and John Lute all of Washington Courthouse, Oh, sister-in-laws; Mrs. Bob (Linda) Schladabeck of Clay, NY, and Mrs. Denny (Tillie) Wilt of Washington Courthouse, Oh, grandchildren; Sierra Meyer, Kassandra and Shaun Duplessis, Dewayne and Erika Thompson, and great granddaughter; Autumn Duplessis. James was preceded in death by sister-in-law; Tina Armentrout.

In his life Mr. Spurlock worked hard at many jobs, including: operator in manufacturing, cook, gas attendant, and sanitation engineer.

Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, January 8th, at 1p.m. at The Moose Lodge, 1200 Sweitzer St., Greenville, Oh, with Pastor Jon Jenkins officiating. Cromes Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave. Sidney, is handling funeral arrangements

The family suggests memorials be made to James' widow, Annette Spurlock 619 Taft St. Sidney, Oh, to help defray funeral expenses. Envelopes will be available at the Lodge.

Spurlock's Bluing Advertising Card

This old advertising card for Spurlock's No. 5 Bluing is currently being offered on ebay. I've been researching these cards for the past 5 years or so and have yet to see this one offered before now. This appears to be a slightly different from the other know formats. The front is close to format 5 but the back has a layout different from all the others. The seller lists this card as number 18, but they do not say in a series of what.

Gloria Jeanne Castle Spurlock, 67, of Prestonsburg, died Fri, Dec 21, 2007, at the Cleveland Clinic. Born June 2, 1940, in Paintsville, she was the daughter of Lorraine Stambaugh Stapleton of Paintsville, and the late Jack C. Castle. She was a Thoroughbred trainer, a homemaker and a former registered nurse. She is survived by her husband, Burl Wells Spurlock. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Paintsville, and the First United Methodist Church in Prestonsburg. In addition to her husband and mother, survivors include a son, Beau Spurlock (Susan Rose) of Prestonsburg; two grandchildren: Julia Rose Spurlock and Elizabeth Ivy "Libby' Spurlock. Funeral services will be held Sat, Dec 29, at 1pm, at the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mark Walz and Rev. Wesley Stedtefeld officiating. Burial will be in the Spurlock Cemetery, in Prestonsburg. Visitation is 1-9pm, Fri, at the First United Methodist Church. Census Index Additions

I've just finished adding the indexes for the 1880, 1900 Civil War Veterans, 1900 and 1910 census records for the surname Spurlock. The 1910 is indexed only on head of household. I have the raw data for the 1920 and 1930 census but the information is in a format that it's really hard to do much with. It's going to be a slow process converting that over to a usable format but I'll work on it as time allows.

Kentucky Birth Records

I've started to add the birth records for the state of Kentucky from 1911 to 1930. We have the records up to 2004 but for privacy issues I've elected to only go up to the most current census records. If anyone needs access to these newer records, please contact me and I'll be happy to help. Currently I have 1930 and 1929 on line.

Spurlock Memorabilia

The move of the Spurlock Memorabilia section of the old Miles Spurlock website is now finished. We lost a few photographs along the way, but most of them are of items that i have in my possession and I can reshoot. I also added in a few new sections, and updated the Spurlock-Neal and Spurlock's #5 Blueing sections.

SFA Website Update

I'm pleased to announce that with the exception of the Census records, the new format for the SFA website is in place. The census pages is the largest area of the website and I will get around to modifying those pages but I feel like there are some higher priorities at the moment. The week between Christmas and New Years will be spent adding new data to the site, and then I'll get to work on the SFA Journal issue that should be out around the 15th. More on the Journal latter this week!

Spurlock - Barger Connection

"Believe the Spurlock/Barger interfaces with my line of John William Barger
from Pittsylvania Co, VA to Gallatin/Saline Co, IL. He married Mary
Catherine Rhine and had numerous children. My husband is related to the
Barger/Rhine family from several sources including Coffee, Cable and several
more.

There were certainly numerous Spurlock families in the Raleigh/Galatia,
Saline Co, IL.

I am interested in corresponding with anyone within your organization that
has the Barger/Rhine connection."
