I decided to investigate and opened the email in a vmware session that I was using. Upon opening the email I saw a few advertisements which is just what I expected. I wanted to know who had sent me this email so I clicked on one of the links.

Within 20 seconds the entire vmware session was frozen and pretty much had every kind of trojan you could imagine possible installed. I stopped the session and decided to switch over to my FreeBSD machine to investigate more.

I opened the webmail interface and re-opened the email, this time prepared to research who this person was. I traced it back to a server in China. This was not unsuspected as most of these kind of things do come from somewhere in the East. I sent the email report off to a few spyware companies so hopefully they can help get rid of whatever was being installed on the vmware windows xp sp2. You can always help out spyware and adware companies by sending them details of whats going on when their software does not get rid of a popup or advertising program. Normally they update and have it fixed very soon if not immediatley.

Pressing Enter Can Be Harmfull

Earlier while surfing today I was filling out a form online. With my job I fill out hundreds of online forms per day and visit about 2000 different websites to do this. After filling out the form I clicked the submit button and something popped up. Without realizing what it said I hit enter. I assumed it would be one of those "unsecure connection" dialogs. What I did not realize was it was a download file dialog.

Luckily the file was an actual software and not something malicious but it could easily be used by malicious hackers. Telling the visitor of the website that it is a magic trick or something of this sort and to hit enter really fast a few times for it to work. The easiest way would be to send through email. People tend to believe anything is possible when they get an email. Remember those old emails that said if you send this to 5 people a bunny or frog will showup on your screen? Well sure you have! and that's because someone actually believed this could happen. Understanding how technology works is a huge part of eliminating spyware and malicious hackers.

Schools Facing Spyware Threats

Once a while back I helped out with the technology area of my school. While helping I came across many computers that frequently had more than 1000 peices of spyware installed. After running adaware and spybot the machine would still remain slow. In fact sometimes the machine would freeze up while running these programs and I would have to start the process all over again. It became very frustrating.

There was one specific horrible spyware and registry error moment when I would have to stop the scanner after it found about 200 bugs, remove those bugs, and start the scanner again, otherwise it would freeze and nothing would be deleted. It took me roughly 2 hours to remove everything and by that time I could have just completley re-installed the operating system.

You should always have more than one peice of spyware software to scan and delete whatever bugs are found. A newer more alternative peice of software can be found at WebsiteRebuild Spyware Site.

Spyware Threats

spyware malware is a huge issue today on the internet.
