Greetings, pod-listeners! We're back, later than planned,* with The Square Peg Show, season 2, episode 3, part 1**! Having mentioned Rango and Source Code in both prior episodes this year, of course we were going to go see them and talk into a microphone about them. Hopefully it's more exciting than that, though. Rango is at 32:08 and Source Code is at 44:53. And, we review the trailer of what has gotta be this year's Razzie winner at 42:10: The Beaver! Watch the trailer so you don't think we're making it up.

Our look at the movies of April begins at 8:05 and has our first impressions of Hanna, African Cats, Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, Fast Five, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Rio, Apollo 18, Insidious, Water for Elephants, Atlas Shrugged Part 1, and a few more. We discuss some of next year's movies at 24:36, including new things from Pixar, the world of Alien, and some very serious fairy tales.

Don't call it a comeback! Wait, we were away for four and a half months, say what you want. It's the start of season two of The Square Peg Show, where we reflect on 2010 and anticipate some 2011 movies.

On this blustery day, we mention everything from The Winter's Bone to The Joker's yang. For news, we've got discussion of casting for The Dark Knight Rises at 26:03, commentary on Oscar and Razzie nominees throughout the hour, and a 2011 preview, including a metric shit-ton of sequels at 34:49 and more superhero movies at 51:04.

Reviews! We quickly run through 2010 at 20:42, but our reactions to Green Hornet, Black Swan, True Grit, and Tron: Legacy start at 2:50.

If you were searching for a new episode last week or this week, we've had to take a little break. Real Life has gotten in the way. There will no longer be two episodes this month.

However, our Halloween episode is still on track for later this month. And, to fill the void, we'll have blog posts covering October movie releases (including The Social Network), how the Fall TV shows are doing, Iron Man 2 on DVD, and even some original music. This will all lead up to the much-postponed Episode 8.

The Line - Lightning-Struck Toads

Character: Storm
Line: "Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning? Same thing that happens to everything else."

"Don't you people ever die?" That's a good, solid villain cliche. But poor, dumb Toad decides to walk towards the woman who can control wind while lightning bolts shoot out of her body. What was he thinking? "Wait. I've got a long tongue and I can jump really far. I've got this." Eventually the fight winds up outside, Toad uses his tongue as a grappling hook so he doesn't fall to his death, and Storm does her best cardboard cutout impersonation and says... The Line.

Two things wrong with this: (1) Since when did X-Men not named Wolverine start trying to kill people? (2) The question is set up like it's the beginning of a joke. It never seemed like a good joke. What would be a satisfying response? This is a superhero movie -- maybe a toad struck by lightning becomes a thunder god or some shit. Now, X-Men probably isn't a good film to begin with -- Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen make it good, and the first sequel is without a doubt Good. (Still trying to erase X-Men 3 from my memory.) But man was it a rocky start with scenes like this. -- Mike

The Line - "Da Gangsta?"

Movie: Clerks
Character: Randal
Line: "Babyface Bambino; da gangsta?"

Oh man, This one really gets me. Now, before people get up in arms about me bashing this film I have to say first that I really love this movie. I know it was Kevin Smith's first movie, I know it was done on a very small budget, and I know that none of the cast would have considered themselves "professionals" at the time of filming. That being said, I believe this is one of the most inspirational films a future film maker could ever see, and that is what I love about it. But this line takes me right out of the movie.

I think of it as sitting in my chair to watch a good flick, and as I watch it, I'm no longer in my living room. I become so sucked into the movie, that I exist in the fictional would laid out in front of me, which says a lot for the film's creators. Then this line happens, and I'm right back in my chair again.

It goes against everything I've ever read about screen writing. "Show the story, don't tell it" is always the golden rule, and it was epicly ignored for this line. The delivery is also a co-culprit here. Now this being the film that it is, there are plenty of poorly delivered lines throughout, but that is what gives it its charm. It just sticks out like a sore thumb.

These lines have the unique ability of taking you completely out of the story's realm and really make you see through the veil of movie-magic. It becomes painfully obvious that these are Actors, filmed by a Camera and on a sound stage or wherever. Eventually there will be video and audio clips of these show-stoppers in action, so you can feel that same rush of reality smacking you in the face as we do.
