(Jan. 17, 2014) – Slavery: A Continued Legacy exhibition, on view January 17 through April 6, features a selection of works by African American artists who develop this theme, from celebrations of freedom depicted by Jacob Lawrence and Elizabeth Catlett to the searing paper cuts of Kara Walker and the enigmatic responses to the long history of prejudice by Lorna Simpson and Carrie Mae Weems.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Jan. 14, 2014) – The Hunter Museum of American Art is proud to present “African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era and Beyond,” an exhibition from the Smithsonian American Art Museum comprised of a selection of works by 43 black artists who lived through the tremendous changes of the 20th century. In paintings, sculpture, prints and photographs, the featured artists embrace themes both universal and specific to the African American experience, including the exploration of identity, the struggle for equality, the power of music and the beauties and hardships of life in rural and urban America.

Willie Cole to Speak Thursday, September 19

The Art Wise distinguished speaker series will welcome Willie Cole on Thursday, September 19th at 6 p.m. Cole is an artist best known for his appropriation of domestic objects and adding a metaphorical twist. Cole has been using the iron motif since the mid-1980s as a stand-in for domestic tasks, African tribal masks, shields and ships. On this evening, the artist will speak about his work and about his piece “Stowage,” a work recently acquired by the Hunter that addresses slavery and the Middle Passage. Cole's work is also found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Whitney Museum of American Art; and The National Gallery of Art. This event is generously supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee Community Trust.
