Report courtesy of PSA.

New Zealand’s Martin Knight won his second career U.S. Pro Series title and ninth career PSA Tour title this weekend, claiming the fifteenth $5,000 Rochester Pro-Am title on the University of Rochester’s Lyman squash courts in upstate New York.

The 32-year-old booked his place in the showpiece finale after claiming a one hundred and seventeen-minute victory against Clinton Leeuw in the semifinals, while van den Herrewegen defeated wildcard Adam Perkiomaki, Jesus Camacho and Lewis Walters to seal his final berth.

Knight adopted a tactically astute approach from the outset, with his consistent length and expert shot selection giving van den Herrewegen no chance to attack in a one-sided opening game which went in Knight’s favor.

Van den Herrewegen looked slightly fatigued in the second and Knight took full advantage, moving his Belgian opponent into the back of the court with some expertly-placed lobs and he duly doubled his lead.

The early exchanges of the third game saw both players begin evenly matched, but Knight’s pace proved too much for van den Herrewegen to handle in the end and the World No.80 pulled away mid-game to open up an 11-3, 11-5, 11-5 margin of victory and capture the ninth PSA World Tour title of his career.

Knight’s title comes one week after reaching the final of the $10,000 Madison Open in Wisconsin. The Rochester Pro-Am is Knight’s second-career U.S. Pro Series title, adding to the 2013 Charlottesville Open.

Result – Final: Rochester ProAm 2016

[1] Martin Knight (NZL) bt [2] Jan van den Herrewegen (BEL) 3-0: 11-3, 11-5, 11-5 (62m)

Potter Cup Day 2 Report:

Today’s Potter Cup matches were filled with excitement and unexpected results.

Defending champions Trinity faced Rochester in one semifinal. Historically, Rochester has two all-time victories against the Bantams, a win in 1973 and a 5-4 victory in 2015. When the two squads faced each other in Hartford in January, Trinity had the edge in a 5-4 match.

Rochester roared out of the gates, with Xiaomin Meng winning in three at number 9 and Neil Cordell winning 11-9 in the fourth at number 3. Trinity stayed close with a three-game win from Afeeq Ismail at number 6. The Yellowjackets led 2-1 at the end of the first round.

The momentum shifted in the second round. Trinity posted two more wins, catching and passing the Yellowjackets. Nku Patrick won in four at number 8, and James Evans also won in four at number 5. The Yellowjacket’s Ryosei Kobayashi won in four at number 2 to tie the score once again. Trinity and Rochester were locked at 3-all going into the final round of matches.

Omar Allaudin gave Trinity a 4-3 lead with a three-game win at number 7. Trinity won the first game of both the number 1 and number 4 matches, but in both contests, Rochester came back to take games 2 and 3.

Rochester’s Mario Yanez rallied from a blowout 1-11 loss in the first game to win the number 1 match in four, tying up the match.

Trinity’s Tom De Mulder and Rochester’s Tomotaka Endo were locked in battle, tied 9-all, then 10-all, in the fifth. Endo pulled away in the final points, winning 12-10 in the fifth. The final score was Rochester 5, Trinity 4. For the first time in 19 years, Trinity will not be in the national championship final; for the first time ever, Rochester will be.

The other semifinal match-up was Yale versus St. Lawrence. During the regular season, the Bulldogs made the trip to Canton and came home 6-3 victors. Now Yale had the home court advantage.

All three first-round matches went past three games. Yale posted the first win, as Arjun Kochhar won in four at number 9. Yale’s Sam Fenwick forced a fifth game at number 3, and St. Lawrence’s George Willis forced a fifth at number 6. It was Fenwick’s and Willis’s opponents, however, who prevailed. Ahmed Bayoumy of St. Lawrence won at number 3, and Max Martin of Yale won at number 6. Yale had a 2-1 lead.

Liam McClintock of Yale didn’t waste much time in his second round match, winning in three at number 8 to widen the Bulldog’s lead. Thomas Kingshott of Yale and Hussien Elrayes of St. Lawrences traded games in the number 5 match, all the way through the fifth. Kingshott won 11-6 in the fifth to bring Yale within one match of the final.

Like his teammate Kingshott, Pierson Broadwater also traded games with his St. Lawrence opponent, Lockie Munro. Broadwater hung on to win 11-9 in the fifth. Yale was going to compete for the Potter Cup on their home courts.

Yale won the match, 6-3.

Tomorrow’s Potter Cup and national championship match will be contested between Yale and Rochester. The match starts at 3 PM.

In the consolation semifinals, Penn defeated Columbia, 5-4, and Harvard defeated Dartmouth, 6-3. Harvard and Penn will meet in the consolation final tomorrow morning.

Trinity hosted the men’s and women’s teams from all eleven programs in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Bantam women clinched a tenth title with a 9-0 sweep over Williams.

The Bantam men continued their NESCAC dominance by reaching the final with victories over Amherst and Williams. Bates caused the reigning champions some trouble in the final, taking two matches off of the hosts, but Trinity pulled through with seven victories to claim a tenth conference title.

Of the five programs, the No. 6 St. Lawrence men and No. 3 Rochester men both emerged at the top for a decisive match.
Report courtesy of the PSA.

Eric Galvez, a thirty-one-year-old Mexican in his sixteenth year on the PSA World Tour, dispatched a succession of younger opponents in the Hazlow Electronics Rochester ProAm to win the U.S. Pro Series Challenger 5 squash event in its fourteenth year at Goergen Athletic Center in Rochester, New York.

Former Mexican number one Galvez reached the twenty-seventh Tour final of his career—and became the first player in the event’s history to appear in the final a second time—after defeating Josue Enriquez, the No. 7 seed from Guatemala, in the semis.

His surprise opponent in the final was Christopher Binnie, the tall sixth seed from Jamaica who upset Pakistani Amaad Fareed, the No. 5 seed, in the other semi.

It was Fareed who provided the upset of the tournament when he ousted Englishman Lewis Walters, the second seed, in the previous round.

The experienced Galvez was too strong for Binnie in the final, beating the Kingston-born twenty-six-year-old 11-7, 11-2, 11-6 to notch up the twelfth PSA World Tour title of his career.

The event streamed live from the University of Rochester’s Lyman squash courts. Watch replays of the final and all matches on the Rochester ProAm tournament page.
