05/26/2013 - Shorts in Brief: Quality Films for Young Children

Just Added!

Sunday, May 26, 11am

All tickets $5

The third annual edition of our family showcase presents the best shorts from the acclaimed New York International Children’s Film Festival. While last year featured the best of Pixar, this time around we offer nine films from six different countries. The British animation The Gruffalo’s Child, based on the popular book, has voices by Helena Bonham Carter and Robbie Coltrane. Highlights also include the candy-colored Balloon Moon and Keenan at Sea (with a hummable song by acoustic pop group The Girls), as well as Twist and Shout (with a visit to Abbey Road), Ernesto, about a boy whose baby teeth are making him miserable, and B/W Races, the hilarious animation from Italy. Finally the venerable (and irresistible) Aardman Animation uses a big beach to tell a tiny tale in the sand. Films are all in English or are non-verbal and therefore friendly to non-readers. This program serves as a preview of the entertaining children’s films to be enjoyed at the Mill Valley Film Festival in October. Program approximately 60 min.

05/27/2013 - Seva Kirtan - Snatam Kaur, Jai Uttal and more!

Please join Seva Foundation in celebrating it's 35th Anniversary with a very special Kirtan evetn at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater in SF featuring: Snatam Kaur, Jai Uttal, C.C. White & Shimshai with host Wavy Gravy.

The name Seva (say-va) is a Sanskrit word meaning self-less service. This is the philosophy that the organization was founded upon and continues to guide our work today. The compassion that drives Seva starts with the realization that we are all connected as one global community.

Seva Foundation is mostly known for its work in curable blindness.
In 35 years Seva has helped restore eyesight to nearly 3.5 million people worldwide. Seva has served 30 million people with much needed eye care services, including vision exams, low cost or free eye glasses, antibiotics to treat infection, and other important eye care services.

Seva focuses on serving communities where poverty levels are high and access to eye care services is low or otherwise non-existent.
Seva builds programs that communities can sustain, such as the Aravind Eye Care System, one of our very first projects, which has since grown to become the largest eye care provider in the world.

Please visit our web site for more information about Seva Foundation and the event.

THE POINCARÉ CONJECTURE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOCK MY BIKE by Kate Poirier

At the beginning of the 20th century, Henri Poincaré, a French mathematician, stated a conjecture that would stump the mathematics world for a hundred years. At the beginning of the 21st century, Grigori Perelman, a Russian mathematician, announced a proof of Poincaré's conjecture. Around the SAME TIME, Kate Poirier, a young
mathematics student in Toronto, Canada, had her bike stolen. Coincidence? Perhaps. In this talk, we examine the statement of the conjecture, its history, and what, if anything, its proof has to do with bike theft. It's a story of math, and love, and bikes…but mostly math. No mathematical expertise will be required, but some experience locking your bike may come in handy. We'll make broad, uninformed, and likely wildly inaccurate claims about the shape of the universe, so any actual physics you know may count against you.

Bio: Kate Poirier got her start as a flaky art student in Toronto. She later learned that mathematicians can also spend all day drawing pictures, and they don't even have to be any good at it to be taken seriously! She got her Ph.D. in math at the City University of New York and is currently a visiting assistant professor in the math department at UC Berkeley. She has four bikes as well as one cat, whose name is Batman.

SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY: BEATING THE CELL AT ITS OWN GAME by Terry Johnson

Ten thousand years ago, give or take, humanity first attempted the deliberate use of microbes to create a particular product. That product was beer; joy and civilization soon followed. Today, synthetic biologists aim to produce biofuels, medicines, and commodity chemicals using wee little beasties, and to control wee little beastie behavior in ever more complex ways. To do this, we need to develop new ways to work with DNA, both physically and in the abstract.

Terry D. Johnson has a master's degree in chemical engineering from MIT and is currently teaching bioengineering at UC Berkeley. He hopes that by doing so, he will be giving students the tools that they will need to repair him as he gets older. He teaches courses in a wide range of subjects, displaying a versatility that has prevented him from achieving any actual expertise. He is an international genetically engineered machine (iGEM) advisor and co-author of How to Defeat Your Own Clone (and other tips for surviving the biotech revolution).

--------------------

DRUNK ON COLOR: FROM PIGMENT TO PIXELS by Megan Elizabeth Carlsen

Cows being fed mango leaves to make Indian yellow from their pee. Insects boiled in ammonia to manufacture Carmine red for lipstick. Burnt human bones used to create the darkest black for Rembrandt's portraits. Our quest to produce the perception of color is filled with fables and facts. Let's look back to a time when artists' paint was packaged in small chunks of pig bladders instead of a nifty little tube. Have certain colors have been lost forever in our progress? Though time may have claimed some hues existence, what new colors have been born out of chemicals and screens? How might these new hues change our lives? We'll explore a history and future riddled with adventure and death, all in the name of creating something that doesn't exactly exist.

Megan Elizabeth Carlsen is an illustrator living in San Francisco. Currently she works as a Game Artist at TinyCo, making cool stuff for you to play while you are on BART or pooping. Her passions include creating illustrations in traditional watercolor, creating characters that connect with people, and teaching others to do the same. You can check out her art at www.meganillustration.com.

05/30/2013 - 'Honky Tonk, Portraits of Country Music' by Henry Horentstein

RAYKO PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
Documents the great story of country music

Honky Tonk
Photographs by Henry Horenstein

Forty years after he began documenting the country music scene in and around Nashville, Henry Horenstein’s deep love for the music and its people continues. Having spent a lifetime around performers and fans, he has been granted access to the high-glamour backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in its heyday as well as the rough-and-tumble dive bars and family-friendly festivals. Spanning from 1972-2011, Horenstein’s photographs featured in his book, “Honky Tonk” capture the irrepressible spirit of an American institution as it has evolved over the years. Familiar stars including Dolly Parton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon Jennings, Tex Ritter, Ralph Stanley, and Tammy Wynette are seen here alongside the familiar venues and enthusiastic fans that sustained them. Horenstein’s photographs and the latest edition of his book are as evocative and irresistible as the music itself.
Visit RayKo during the opening reception to meet the legend himself, see his prints and have him sign a copy of his beautiful and nostalgic book, “Honky Tonk, Portraits of Country Music.”

Henry Horenstein has been a professional photographer, teacher, and author since the 1970s. He studied history at the University of Chicago before turning to photography, earning his BFA and MFA at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), while studying under legendary photographers Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Henry's work is collected and exhibited internationally, and he has published over 30 books, including Black & White Photography: A Basic Manual, used by hundreds of thousands of college, university, high school, and art school students as their introduction to photography. He has also published several monographs of his own work, including Show, Honky Tonk, Animalia, Humans, Racing Days, Close Relations, and many others. Henry lives in Boston, and is professor of photography at RISD. His photographs can be seen at www.horenstein.com

Center Forward

This is a collaborative exhibition between RayKo Photo Center and the Center for Fine Art Photography in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Center Forward was juried by gallery directors, Hamidah Glasgow and Ann Jastrab. The exhibit brings together the visions of both curators and explores the current trends in contemporary photography. Featuring 42 artists from across the country and around the globe. Highlights include Noah David Bau’s portraits depicting young professional Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) fighters in Bangkok from his series “This is My Body,” Susan Barnett’s “Not in Your Face” alternative portrait series, and Brett Van Ort’s massive interactive “Minescape” pictures that initially just seem like sublime color landscapes, but indeed there are landmines or bombs buried within them. Brett will also be here signing copies of his newly published book of the same name.

Speaker: Steven Pifer, Director, Arms Control Initiative, Brookings Institution

President Obama has made reducing existing nuclear weapons a foreign policy priority. With the New START Treaty between the US and Russia in place, should the US consider other nuclear arms control steps to enhance American security?
05/30/2013 - Film Screening: The Dipsea Movie

The Dipsea Movie is a documentary film about Mill Valley’s historic cross-country running race, the Dipsea Race. The film follows the action of the 100th annual Dipsea, raced in June of 2010, featuring a dramatic start-to-finish contest between an 8-year-old girl and a 68-year-old grandmother.

The film also tells the story of the people, history and character of the Dipsea that combine to make it a singularly important event for a small but fiercely dedicated, and often obsessive, community of Bay Area runners.

Filmmaker, Sam Lueck, will introduce the film and be available for Q+A after.

The screening will take place in the Library's Creekside Room. No registration required.

05/31/2013 - The 'Ella Effect' - the story behind Ella Fitzgerald's genius

“Ella Effect” is the story behind Ella Fitzgerald’s genius. After a sold out premiere at Shotwell Studio last fall, “Ella Effect” returns to Vima Ballroom May 31 and June 1, 2013.

“This ain’t your mama’s tribute to Ella show; this is an incisive look at the ways she created herself and her style through beautiful renditions of the songs that Ella made her own. Josh and Freeplay (Dance Crew) take these lessons and amaze you with how truly timeless this work can be. Matching movement and music, dance and daring, you have a spectacular evening in store. “

- Pam Peniston, Executive Director, National Queer Arts Festival

Description: A one-hour show featuring extraordinary jazz singers and musicians, energetic swing and hip hop dancers, and honest, riveting narrative. “The Ella Effect” is the story not just of how Ella became a genius, but how her method of personal evolution can apply to anyone, anywhere. In 12 time honored classic Ella standards, Josh Klipp and his talented cast not only entertain, but illustrate and bring to life Ella’s simple and brilliant approach to creating genius…and perhaps even profound change.

Featuring: Josh Klipp and the Klipptones, jazz vocalist Emily Day, dancers Janey Madamba, Rachel Baker, Freeplay Dance Crew and more!

05/31/2013 - Die Propylgruppe + Pale Reverse

This night will serve as a somewhat belated record release event for two of the performing groups, with Die Propylgruppe and Pale Reverse both very recently issuing limited edition 3” CDr’s from Oakland based label Petit Mal Music. Joining them on this bill tonight is a first performance by familiar faces AC Way and Jesse Burson as A Ruby Snow, which adds yet another touch of uniqueness to this special night of live experimental/electronic music performance.

Die Propylgruppe is the collaborative effort of R.K. Faulhaber and J.B. Haynes, who had worked in fits and starts together over the past decade within the confines of irr. app. (ext.) and Nurse With Wound. Faulhaber, with his extensive if unpublished wisdom of wooly electronics, and Haynes, with his corrosive take on electro-acoustics, have proved to be noble foils for each other. Listen for sounds of caustic hypnosis and demagnetized static grids, spotted with plenty of Schnitzler’s Ballet Statique era blorp, and unstable drones blanketing the space with frequency oscillations seemingly extracted from the Van Allen Belt. The potential for danse macabre from jittery analogue bubblebath rhythms is present and accounted for, as is a bit of spoken exposition from at least one of these two scholarly but noisy gentlemen from the South and East Bay respectively.

Pale Reverse, a seldom seen solo incarnation of G. Hagan, is a sonic beast that’s been rattling bones and lurking in movie theaters throughout the Bay Area since 1996. More likely to be spotted as a member of groups Thomas Carnacki, Grale and Common Eider, King Eider, Hagan will on occasion give forth with viola and cracked electronics, stones and gongs, bits of trash and vocal utterances, spilling sounds around rooms and halls and balconies and forests. Things get murky and move in unexpected ways, but that’s our world. Pale Reverse resides in a dark corner of the East Bay and frequently makes appearances in other selective locales.

A Ruby Snow is a duo comprising the talents of East Bay musicians AC Way and Jesse Burson, performing for the first time live together for this show. With the extended pedigree of both performers (Sutekh Hexen, French Radio, Thomas Carnacki, Riqis, Maleficia, Big City Orchestra and several more), the possibilities are wide open and the sonic palette diverse. Expect otherworldly vocals from the darkest recesses of the soul alongside deep blasts of electronic hum and buzz punctuated by music concrete clusters and close mic’d sources. Not seen before, and possibly not again, this is a special duo performance for a special night.

06/04/2013 - Film Screening: Howl

In celebration of Allen Ginsberg’s birthday (he would have been 87 on June 3) the Contemporary
Jewish Museum screens the modern classic film Howl which explores the sensationalism surrounding
the publication of one of the most important poems of the twentieth century. The film is a great
primer to Ginsberg’s poem “Howl” and the accompanying obscenity trials that changed the future
of modern literature. Film directed by Rob Epstein and starring Jon Hamm and Mary Louise Parker;
animation by Eric Drooker (84 min, 2010).

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg.

Free matinee screenings are presented in conjunction with the Museum’s admission-free first
Tuesdays of the month.

06/06/2013 - Mining the Collection: Site/Structure Works by David Sleeth at Doug Adams Gallery

David Sleeth's Site/Structure opens with an unframed collage depicting stonewalls surrounding Tell en-Nasbeh, a site northwest of Jerusalem that was excavated by William Frederic Badè between 1926 and 1935. With a focus on experimental archeology and an interest in sculptural work, David Sleeth uses lithics (tools), iron implements, ceramics and other small artifacts, as well as original photographs of Tell en-Nasbeh, for a related series of pen and ink drawings. He also includes a sculptural piece made of wood, carved through the traditional process of burning and scraping, adding a dimension to this compelling study of material, fabrication and object.

06/06/2013 - Tales of the San Francisco Cacophony Society Book Signing

Fight Club, Burning Man, flash mobs, urban exploration, and culture jamming are among the surprising and impressive range of subversive trends in pop culture inspired by the radical exploits of the Cacophony Society. At its zenith, the shadowy group hosted chapters in over a dozen major cities, influencing much of the 1980s and ‘90s underground.

More than a simple history of a revolutionary subculture, Tales of the San Francisco Cacophony Society serves as a “How-To” manual for pranksters, artists, adventurers, and anyone interested in rampant creativity.

Come hear co-authors John Law and Carrie Galbraith weave spellbinding tales of creativity run amok and sign copies of the hardbound, full-color, tome which includes a Foreword by author Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Choke) and an Afterword by Charlie Todd (founder of Improv Everywhere).

06/07/2013 - Either/Or, an exhibition featuring the works of Christian Davies and Noah Ptolemy

For Either/Or Davies creates new work that explores American quilting traditions while appropriating patterns and translating them into meticulously crafted paintings. The patterns are turned and twisted within the compositions and remind us of the challenges of craftsmanship and the ability of artists to bring forth new forms out of tradition. Davies come from a family of quilters, and although he has never constructed a quilt himself he sees this work as creating a connection between himself and those family members that are no longer with him. In this way his paintings create the same sense of nostalgia and wonder that one sees when looking at a treasured family quilt.

Noah Ptolemy is a Berkeley based artist who spent his formative years in Japan and the influence of Japanese culture, especially Manga is front and center in his recent work. For Either/Or Ptolemy has crafted an environment and mythos all his own and occupies this space with a bizarre society. At first glance all of the occupants of this world are homogeneous, possibly even a single character involved in multiple activities, but as you begin to look around one notices nuances in color, position and expression, and the notion of hierarchy begins to form. Ptolemy does not force a narrative onto the viewer and the world he creates abounds with possibilities and an invitation to create your own narrative surrounding this strange world.

06/07/2013 - UNLOCK, PUSH's 2013 Home Season

June 7-9, 8pm-10pm

Push Dance Company combines episodic dance, new music, dramatic set design and physical story-telling with the world premiere of choreographer/director Raissa Simpson's UNLOCK in 3 performances June 7-9, 2013 at Zaccho SF performance space in San Francisco. Simpson will use author Zora Neale Hurston's iconic 1937 novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, as a jumping off point to interweave her own experiences as an African-American and Filipina-American woman to investigate skin-color bias and mixed ancestry among African Americans. Simpson, who was featured in the February 2013 Black Choreographers' Festival in San Francisco, will collaborate with set designer Benito Steen and composer and cellist UNWOMAN to create a new, multi-tiered dance work that embodies influences of the human spirit.

One of the most successful black women writers of the twentieth century, Zora Neale Hurston transports readers of Their Eyes Were Watching God to a world where her characters live by a code of survival. Simpson's UNLOCK will bring these stories of self-discovery and love to the physical world while adding a 21st century twist from another strong African-American woman.

Push Dance Company (Push) under the direction of Raissa Simpson, melds music and media, deftly weaving inter-generational and inter-community voices to create a potent force that advances the idiom of dance. Articulating details that run through the whole body, Push builds vibrant cross-cultural works to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges attributed to mixed heritage by using non-traditional dance forms. Edgy, sleek, and sexy, each moment generates a fresh perspective from intermingling diverse dancers in raw situations- aptly described as emotional and kinetic. Showcasing rarely seen, discussed or presented topics in public settings, Push provides an opportunity to examine issues that surround and affect us all.

06/11/2013 - Going Modern: American Design in the 1920s

The American Decorative Arts Forum's June 11th illustrated presentation is by John Stuart Gordon, curator at the Yale University Art Gallery. Mr. Gordon's lecture draws from his exhibit, "A Modern World: American Design from the Yale University Art Gallery, 1920 - 1950," and explores the varied influences and myths surrounding the appearance of modern decorative arts during the Jazz Age.

Though skeptical at first, Americans eagerly embraced modernist design during the 1920s and applied its aesthetic to furniture, housewares, textiles, silver and glass. Mr. Gordon shows how modern design was more than merely another decorative style and implied a new world view. Modernism became equated with modern life and was associated with progressive social and cultural issues of the day.

Modern objects were fabricated from newly-discovered polymers, utilized novel manufacturing processes, or adapted industrial materials for domestic use in ways that proclaimed their liberation from past traditions. Innovations in transportation, radio broadcasting and film all became equated with modern design, as did social issues, like the evolution of gender norms and anti-prohibition sentiments which were closely aligned with modernist designs.

Our mini-exhibit, which opens at 7:15PM, adds another fascinating dimension to each month's lecture topic. Come and view sleekly sophisticated Art Deco and streamlined objects brought by ADAF members from their collections. Mr. Gordon's lecture begins at 8:00PM. A question and answer period follows the lecture and members and guests are encouraged to participate. All ADAF lecturers are also very approachable after the Q+A session.

The June 11th lecture is held at our alternate location, the Walt Disney Museum in the Presidio at 104 Montgomery Street, San Francisco 94129.

06/14/2013 - The Hitchcock 9

Alfred Hitchcock’s nine earliest surviving works, all newly restored by the British Film Institute (BFI), will have their US premiere with screenings of all nine films presented by the San Francisco Silent Film Festival at the Castro Theatre, June 14-16.

The historic Castro Theatre is the perfect setting for these classic films, and every screening will feature live accompaniment by world-class musicians. Original scores will be performed by the Colorado-based Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, British composer/pianist Stephen Horne, and East Bay pianist Judith Rosenberg.

The restoration of “The Hitchcock 9” is the largest restoration project ever undertaken by the BFI, which holds some of the most important and earliest surviving copies of Hitchcock’s silent films; the restorations also include materials sourced from other international archives. The restorations have made the films crisper and fresher than ever and uncover new layers of meaning, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the precocious genius at work.

While Hitchcock is one of the most famous film directors of all time, his first ten films " nine of which survive " are little known compared to his later work. Made from 1925 to 1929, Hitchcock’s extant silents are among the greatest achievements of early British cinema, containing the motifs and obsessions we’ve come to recognize as “Hitchcockian,” though most of the nine have been little-seen here, if at all.

The nine new BFI restorations include the director’s very first film, The Pleasure Garden, and such rarities as Downhill, Easy Virtue, Champagne, and The Farmer’s Wife. The familiar Hitchcock style begins to emerge strongly in at least four of the films: Blackmail, The Ring, The Manxman, and The Lodger, which the director himself dubbed “the first true Hitchcock picture” (it also features his first cameo appearance).

06/20/2013 - SHIPWRECK: Competitive erotic fanfiction.

Presented by The Booksmith + Write Club SF:

Good theatre for bad literature? Marital aid for book nerds? Competitive erotic fan-fiction at its finest? Shipwreck is all of these things, plus an open bar.

Six Great Writers will destroy one Great Book (this time, The Great Gatsby), one Great Character at a time, in service of the transcendent and the profane (and also laughs). Marvel as beloved characters are plucked from their worlds and made to do stuff they were never meant to do in places they were never meant to see.

You choose the best Ship. The winning writer chooses the book for the next Shipwreck.

All stories will be recited by Shakespearean Thespian in Residence, Sir Steven Westdahl, from his private chamber at Booksmith Castle, both to preserve the majesty of the written work and to ensure the honesty of the audience when voting for a winner.

FEATURING THE TALENTS OF:
Ken Grobe
Sarah Griffin
Nate Waggoner

Please join us for a screening of San Francisco"Still Wild at Heart, the award winning documentary directed by Melissa Peabody. Still Wild at Heart is a virtual case study of the arrival of coyotes in our urban communities. This film has been described as “uplifting, lyrical, moving” and “an absolute treasure of a film.”

Unfolding first in San Francisco, the film follows the story of the coyote across the national canvas"to New York City’s Central Park; to Chicago, where more than 2,000 coyotes live today; and to rural California, where sheep ranchers find promise in innovative non-lethal predator control methods to protect their livestock.

A discussion with Brent Plater of the Wild Equity Institute will follow the film.

About the filmmaker: Melissa Peabody’s credits include Turner Broadcasting (Dolphins In Danger) and an Animal Planet 13-part series (Wyland’s Ocean World), as well as many other documentaries for international TV broadcast. She is the executive producer and owner of Living World Films LLC.

07/11/2013 - The Rape of Lucretia

July 11 at 7:30 PM and July 13 at 2:00 PM

Britten's emotionally charged chamber opera, The Rape of Lucretia, is at once powerful and devastating. Lucretia is considered the most virtuous woman by her peers and her husband Collatinus. However unbeknownst to Collatinus, his friend Tarquinius has travelled to Rome to "test" her virtue. Lucretia and her serving women give Tarquinius a place to stay for the night when he arrives, despite Lucretia's reluctance. At night Tarquinius comes into Lucretia's room and, although she remains true to her husband, he will not take no for an answer. Lucretia, faced with her own conflicting emotions and despair, ultimately takes her own life. A heartbreaking and poignant work, this opera is best suited for adult audiences.

By Benjamin Britten with libretto by Ronald Duncan, based on Andre Obey's play "Le Viol de Lucrece." Sung in English with English supertitles.

DAvid Auburn's award winning play PROOF will be presented by the BellJar Theatre at EXIT STAGE LEFT in San Francisco on Fridays and Saturdays only. Proof is play about relationships haunted by the character of insanity and colored by doubt. Witty, suspenseful, and compassionate; PROOF is storytelling at its best
