San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is bringing back You Are Hear, its popular live music series this summer on Fridays starting June 19 through August 28. Performances are held from 11am until 2pm. From acoustic jazz to rocking RandB; from Brazilian Samba to classical, travelers will get a taste of San Francisco’s diverse world-class music scene as they make their way through the airport.

“An airport is usually an unlikely setting for listening to live music,” said Airport Director John L. Martin. “But it is a surprise and delight when our passengers discover the bands playing. Everyone slows down, smiles and starts tapping their feet to the music. It’s a wonderful summer treat – and a great way to give travelers a glimpse of what San Francisco has to offer.”

SFO is one of only a handful of airports across the country that offers live music. The bands will play in the main lobby of the International Terminal (pre-security), the United hub of Terminal 3 (post-security), and on the mezzanine bridge of Terminal 1 (pre-security). The Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble, a groundbreaking new music ensemble led by classical and film composer Jack Curtis Dubowsky, performs live musical soundtracks to experimental films including underground classics by John and James Whitney, and new works by Jeffery Cravath, Phil Maxwell (UK), Hazuan Hashim (UK), Ben Coopersmith (NYC), and Samara Halperin.

The Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble combines acoustic instruments, electronic hardware, audiovisuals, composed material and structured improvisation. The Ensemble, founded by classical and film composer Dubowsky, treats analog synth as a rare and unpredictable performance instrument. Our music, abstract, calm, spacious, free form, transcendental, contemporary, electroacoustic mystical psychedelia, is performed and recorded live with no overdubs or sequencing.

Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble Member Bios

Composer, keyboardist, and bassist Jack Curtis Dubowsky received his MM in Composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and also studied at the Aspen School. Jack studied conducting with Sonja Neblett, and composition with David Conte, Conrad Susa, Elinor Armer, and Michael Czajkowski. Jack has composed four chamber operas, music for five feature films, television, and concert performance. Jack’s choral music has been performed internationally by groups including San Francisco Choral Artists, Desert Voices, Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco, and Mount Eden Chorus. Jack’s orchestral music has been performed by the Castro Valley Chamber Orchestra. Jack’s chamber music has been performed by Snopea Chamber Ensemble, Organic Sound Experiment, Collaborata, and Paradigm Brass. Jack has received grants from Meet the Composer, Zellerbach Family Fund, Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, and American Composers Forum. Jack has produced recordings by The Winsome Griffles, Glen Meadmore, and the Virgin Whore Complex. Jack’s award winning “Mr Jones” parody is a highlight of the Momus album Stars Forever.

Erika Johnson began studying percussion in her hometown of Olympia, Washington. Ms. Johnson has received a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from Indiana University-Bloomington and a Master of Music in percussion from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has held the position of Principal Timpani in the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and has played for numerous professional ensembles. Ms. Johnson was a concerto competition winner performing Deja vu by Michael Colgrass on timpani with the Indiana University Concert Orchestra. She was also a Founder's Day Honors Scholar from 1994 to 1998 and has received such awards as the Indiana University Percussion Ensemble award, the Jorge Estebanez Scholarship, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music Departmental Awards for Percussion and the New Music Ensemble. Her teachers have included Gerald Carlyss (Philadelphia Orchestra) and Jack Van Geem (San Francisco Symphony). Currently, Ms. Johnson freelances in the Bay Area and enjoys arranging popular music for percussion.

Mudwrstling mid season fundraiser! Currently, the B.A.D. Girls have 70+ full-time league members and continue to grow by the season. As members of the national Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), a skater-run organization of flat-track female derby leagues, they have participated as a Division 2 league in multiple tournaments and intra-league bouts, placing fourth in the West, and sixth in the nation. The B.A.D. Girls are a grassroots, DIY organization built on nothing more than dedication, a love of derby and, of course, plenty of blood, sweat and tears. League management consists of ten skater-run committees: Coaching, Mediation, Merchandise, Human Relations, Public Relations, Finance, Community Service, Event Planning, Art /Web, and Sponsorship. Committee Heads are democratically elected by the league. No one here makes a dime.

I am a traveling musician from Baltimore, Maryland. My music is soul music: the kind that moves mountains and makes the spirit dance. I draw influences from Devendra Banhart, Iron and Wine, Jollie Holland, Billie Holliday and many other female vocalists. Anei Birdlo's music can be described as soul-gypsy-bluegrass-blues-jazz-gospel-folk-freakfolk.

I am into jumping around, dancing, growling, shouting, swaying, closing my eyes, banging my guitar, laughing, and making a crowd drop dead silent during my performances. I have played at many venues in Baltimore including the Windup Space, Joe Squared, Charm City Art Space, the Sidebar, Cafe Hon and the Golden West. I have performed before with more popular artists like Mariee Sioux, Dearest, Peter and the Wolf and MacGregor Burns and then a bunch of unknown artists.

I am an independent DIY artist, doing it all myself, including recording and releasing, booking shows, album art-as of now anyway. I am doing a West Coast Tour for July, and also hitting up San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Olympia.

Marin resident Stevie Coyle is celebrating his new cd 'Ten in One' with an all-star cast in Mill Valley July 17th. This will be a full-band extravaganza, featuring Sam Bevan (David Grisman, Joe Craven, Matt Flinner) on bass, Kit Walker (Kundalini Boombox, Airto Moreira) on keys, Kendrick Freeman (Allison Brown) on drums and Walter Strauss (Ten Sleep, The Burns Sisters) on guitar. Room capacity is only 130, so please reserve early. This is the first album since Stevie has left the Waybacks and it is a remarkable achievement.

Kathy Sands-Boehmer in Acoustic Music Scene says: “Stevie Coyle is arguably one of the funniest fingerstyle guitarists known to humankind. Since his departure from the incredibly eclectic string band, the Waybacks, Stevie has been plying his trade as a solo performer — entertaining those lucky enough to be present with his amazing guitar skills and witty repartee. His brand new, hot off the press CD, Ten-in-One, is a concept album. According to a recent article in The Boston Globe, concept albums are “in” again so it seems that Stevie is right on track with this one”.

Stevie Coyle spent his early years surrounded by music, thanks to a radio station-running dad, mandolinist mom, string-meister David Lindley as his first guitar teacher, and a bluegrass band as next-door neighbors. Stevie himself has led a somewhat checkered past, including stints as a university theology major, as a traveling sword swallower with The Royal Lichtenstein Circus, as an actor on the daytime drama The Young and the Restless, and as a killer whale show announcer at Marine World/Africa USA. He is also a founding member of the infamously talented string band, The Waybacks, and has collaborated with Roy Zimmerman in the folk tribute /parody band The Foremen.

All this and much more provides grist for his quirky, tuneful, and insightful songs. A year and a half ago Stevie Coyle set out to make a sweet, succinct little instrumental fingerstyle guitar album. Apparently, some one of those Muses we've all heard about (but Stevie, for one, says he had until then only ever had glimpses of) caught wind of this humble plan, and swiftly interposed a rather substantial change in scale as well as a considerably more protracted timetable.

But as Stevie himself says, 'When the Muses call, you can't just put on the kettle, offer a cup of tea and expect to spend a pleasant afternoon. On this particular visit they moved in wholesale and stayed for months on end.'

In fits and starts a protagonist appeared, as did a somewhat mysterious plot, as well as organic connections between songs written years apart. 'It was quite a ride. What started off over a year ago as a polite little fingerstyle album soon revealed itself to be something more akin to Dark Side Of The Moon, if I may flatter myself by that comparison for just a moment.'

'Ten-In-One' is a concept album, ostensibly about a trip to a sideshow and back. It's a day in the life of one Mr. Oster, a rather unassuming, introspective, Everyman sort of character. And even though it's a very unusual day for him, it turns out to be a very good one. 'I'm quite sure the album about other things too,' Stevie says, 'but I'm not certain what they are. It's runaway eclecticism all the way!”

In honor of all the East Bay bloggers, Spot.Us, Tech Liminal and BetterOakland are hosting their first BEAST Bloggers Camp on Saturday July 18, 2009 at TechLiminal in downtown Oakland A BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. The day consists of sessions proposed by attendees and the schedule is created on site the morning of the event. BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn from each other in an open environment. Circus Celebration at Playland-Not-At-The-Beach! On Saturday and Sunday, July 18 - 19, Playland-Not-At-The-Beach is holding a circus celebration! Everyone loves the circus, and this weekend will be very special -- we will be celebrating the circus that was based right here in El Cerrito! Ten years ago a brand new circus made its way through Northern California. Known as Circus Chimera, the show played for 11 days at the old El Cerrito Plaza. Families loved the show and came back to see it many times. Few people know that the circus was headquartered inside the Playland-Not-at-the-Beach building here in El Cerrito. This weekend we will be showing rare movies of the circus acts and discussing the history of Circus Chimera. Our Guest of Honor is Mike Gorman who was the Director of Marketing and Promotions for Chimera. Guests will receive circus souvenirs.

Circus Vargas is currently touring the Bay Area with their 40th anniversary edition. The show will be at Hilltop Mall starting on July 23rd. Playland-Not-at-the-Beach will be hosting a party for the Circus Vargas performers here in our Museum of Fun. Anyone who visits Playland between now and the opening of the show will receive a discount pass to attend the 40th anniversary edition of Circus Vargas.

The special events of CIrcus Celebration are in addition to all of Playland's regular attractions. Guests pay one low price to enter and can stay all day: $10 for children and seniors, and $15 for general admission. Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is a nonprofit Museum of Fun. Hello everybody! Come join the crew of Peachpit Press as we photowalk in and around China Camp State Park in Marin. Our walk will begin at 5:30 PM at the Chinese Fishing Village. After shooting around the village we will head out for a short walk in the park so we can set up to capture what I am sure will be a fantastic sunset.

What is there to shoot? Well, to start off there is the Chinese shrimp-fishing village that has thrived on this site since the 1880s. That means lots of cool old artifacts, fishing boats, a pier and much more. Then as we head out into the part we will be surrounded by the beauty of Northern California: live oaks, lovely meadows, beautiful salt marshes, the San Pablo Bay and, I am sure, a critter or two.

Bring a snack and a beverage (an adult one if you desire; I know we will) so we can chat after the shoot. Looking forward to seeing you there. We may even bring a few books to give away. You never know!

Get your play on at CELLspace with San Francisco's most adored 'power players.' Join breakdancers, Double Dutch jumpropers, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgance, Live Evil and other colorful creatives for an evening of interactive art.

“Play all” by Sherry Wong will showcase a series of group portrait works on paper, featuring members of the various creative communities in San Francisco. Inspired by the artist’s introductory experience with the city’s strong collective urge, the event will be presented in the tradition of the 1960s avant-garde Happenings, exploring the interplay between art and life.

The opening reception will also feature a curated section of sculpture, painting, photography and installation art. An evening of performances will include music, contemporary dance, athletics, fashion and drag, culminating with an interactive dance party.

Showcased at the event will be a broad spectrum of artists, performers, DJs and musicians who work and perform in the San Francisco Bay Area. Every artist or group who presents throughout the evening has been depicted in Wong’s “Play All” paintings, bringing to life each of the featured communities.

The Gathering in the Park is as diverse as Union City itself. Entertainment will range from hot Latin to cool blues, including: * LAVA Latin Rhythms * Big Cat Tolefree and the Hipnotics * Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company * Merani O' Tehani Polynesian Dancers * Indian Bhangra and Gidha dancing * A performance by visitors from the Hangzhou Youth Cultural Activity Center in China. Sunday Streets rolls through the Mission for the last time this Summer on Sunday, July 19 from 10am - 2pm. That's right, NO CARS! The route goes from Dolores Park down Valencia Street and across 24th, ending at the Rolph playground on Hampshire and 26th.

Bring your bike, skates, skateboard, or just yourself and some comfy shoes and come play in the streets! Free activities include Aztec dancing, yoga, rollerskating, hula hooping, bike rental, bike maintenance by the 'Lube Fairies', and much more! Now on her fifth year breathing from the atmosphere, Pickles is very proud to show her work at the Glama-Rama salon and Art Gallery. Over the past few years, many therapists have effectively used meditation as treatments for patients with mild anxiety and depressive tendencies. Dr. Philippe Goldin, Stanford University, will explain why, revealing data from recent neuroimaging studies demonstrating meditation related changes in the neural bases of various neuropsychological systems. Specifically, how meditation practices interact with brain systems supporting attention, emotion, and self processing, which together mediate psychological balance or imbalance.

Please join us for the International Museum of Women's Extraordinary Voices, Extraordinary Change Speaker Series with Dolores Huerta in conversation with Maria Echaveste.

Dolores Huerta, President and Founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, is one of the country's most important and influential Latinas and advocates for workers' rights. She works tirelessly developing leaders and advocating for the working poor, women and children. Ms. Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) with César Chávez in 1962 and has been instrumental in passing historic legislation, including Aid for Dependent Families (AFDC), disability insurance for farm workers, and legalization for one million farm workers under the Immigration Reform Act of l984-85. As the main negotiator for the UFW, she obtained many 'firsts' that had been denied to farm workers including basic sanitation, clean drinking water in the fields, and medical coverage. She is an esteemed Global Council member of the International Museum of Women. Meet the woman who was the inspiration behind President Obama's famous 'Yes We Can' slogan!

Dolores Huerta will appear in conversation with Berkeley School of Law Lecturer and Senior Fellow Maria Echaveste. A former U.S. presidential advisor to Bill Clinton and White House Deputy Chief of Staff under the second Clinton administration, Echaveste is one of the highest-ranking Latinas to have served in a presidential administration. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and a co-founder of the Nueva Vista Group, a policy, legislative strategy and advocacy group working with non-profit and corporate clients.

David Phillips, Visiting Scholar, Center for the Study of Human Rights, Columbia University In recent years a number of Muslim movements have started transitioning from taking up arms to partaking in politics. David Phillips joins the Council for an analysis of non-state Muslim organizations abandoning violence at different stages and pursuing their goals through a political process. Some have successfully made the transition while others are in mid-stream. Some have tried but backtracked, splintered, or simply abandoned the political process and reverted back to violence. Phillips considers six case studies: Hezbollah, Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, Kurdistan Workers Party, Free Aceh Movement, and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front. Phillips will discuss the origin, ideology, structure and leadership of each organization and assess each group’s commitment to elections and its acceptance of the responsibility that comes with governance. The San Francisco Film Society’s acclaimed SF360 Film+Club, a bimonthly social screening series, returns with a special edition double-barreled mash-up program featuring the documentary RiP: A Remix Manifesto directed by Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor and a live set by mash-up VJ legends Eclectic Method, Thursday, July 23 at 7:00 pm at Mezzanine (444 Jessie Street at Mint).

RiP explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the pied piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s former Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow also add their perspectives to the mix. Creating a participatory media experiment from day one, Gaylor shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP, Gaylor and Girl Talk invite an impassioned dialogue about current copyright, fair use and intellectual property laws and make a deeply provocative case for the ideas of Free Culture. RiP will be presided by a short video produced by Creative Commons that explains their aims, methods of work and services for the promotion of creative sharing and ease of copyright use.

After the screening, Eclectic Method—arguably the highest profile VJs in the world—will present a live set of video mash-ups that are sure to boggle the mind and move the booty. Eclectic Method helped pioneer the emerging art of audio-visual mixing. The trio’s audio-visual mash-ups feature television, film, music and video game footage sliced and diced into blistering, post-modern dance floor events. It’s a cyclone of music and images and a real-time subversion of technology and media performed live on video. Eclectic Method also claims one of the freshest live shows in music. The group has performed at such popular events as Glastonbury, The Festival, Winter Music Conference, BBC’s One Big Weekend and at several major film festivals. Often, the image of a subversive political act can have as deep an impact on society as the act itself. In turn, powerful images often inspire activism.

This program brings together interdisciplinary artists Fallen Fruit (AIRs '09) and filmmaker and video artist April Martin (AIR '09) to interrogate the relationship between art, democracy and activism as it relates to their current work. Fallen Fruit uses the model of collective art practice to engage with communities around the importance of reclaiming public space in an effort to grow, harvest and consume fruit. Their project points to the challenges of self-sustainable food production in urban areas, and the imagery they create underlines this effort as an inherently political act. Martin's activist art practice includes her first documentary film as well as a recent video she created for the clemency hearing of an Ohio prison inmate on death row. Fallen Fruit and April Martin will present works-in-progress and consider the effects and uses of activist art.

Wow!!! Is this Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad's seventh time in San Francisco? Does time fly or what? Just like walking around the bride 7x, we are about to commit. We love coming back to the city by the bay to bring the Jews and the gays together, to reunite old Facebook friends, to drink, to celebrate, to revel in our 2nd home sweet home. If you saw Jewish Girls a few years ago, this show is brand spanking new.

Since we last gave San Francisco a treat, we have been to Vegas, where our dreams of bright lights and red curtain were whittled own to a stage next to trailer wrapped in barbed wire. Salt Lake City where Jesus was in the 2nd row, then to Moab, UT ehre the person with the most crap in their front yard wins. Then a death defying drive into Denver which can only be described as a Exodus meets The Little Engine That Could with a sprinkle of The Donner Party. Never a dull moment with the wandering yids over here.

After cruising the US for 6 years, last year Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad opened at The Zipper Theater in NYC with a brand new show which received rave reviews - 3 stars- NY Post, Backstage called it 'a spontaneous party' and the Village Voice said it was 'super fun.' This rendition of mishagas on wheels was directed by Michael Baron (Signature Theater, DC) and choreographed by Jessi Erian (Urban Bush Women and The Electric Company). It's Faster Pussycat in the Borscht Belt, 'Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen' gets remixed, Tumbalaika gets a makeover and we all find out what's in Gefilte Fish. It's 'Fear Factor' for Jews, although you don't have to be Jewish to love these broads.

Mythological magic, swashbuckling adventure, melodrama and romance - Cinema inspired the imagination of the subcontinent very early in its history, just years after the birth of film in the late 1800s. Anupama Kapse will lead us through a short history of early Indian cinema, from the silent era into the arrival of sound on the Indian filmscape. Clips includes: Kaliya Mardan (1919), by India's film pioneer, D.G. Anupama Kapse's doctoral thesis at UC Berkeley, The Moving Image: Melodrama and Early Cinema in India, 1913-1947, examines the genres of Indian silent cinema through a melodramatic lens. She will be joining Queens College as Assistant Professor, Media Studies this fall.

Robin Sukhadia has been studying tabla under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri at CalArts and the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California for the past eight years. He recently completed a Master of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts.

Anyone living in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1970s and 80s remembers watching fondly 'Creature Features', the very funny Saturday night show on KTVU, Channel 2. Bob Wilkins was a marvelously sardonic wit, and frequently warned viewers to turn to programs on other stations rather than sit through 'Attack of the Mushroom People'. When Bob Wilkins retired, he was replaced by John Stanley, a more movie savvy critic for the San Francisco Chronicle who had a deep abiding love for the horror genre.

On Saturday and Sunday, July 25-26, Playland-Not-At-The-Beach is proud to present our Creature Features weekend! TV host John Stanley will be here in person signing autographs and showing clips from behind the scenes at the Creature Features show. Tom Wyrsch, long time fan of the show and personal friend of both Wilkins and Stanley, produced a superb documentary last year called 'Watch Horror Movies -- Keep America Strong!' Tom will be with us to talk about his friendship with Wilkins who passed away last year after suffering with Alzheimer's disease.

Guests to Playland will have the opportunity to see footage never aired on television and to hear stories about many of the behind-the-scenes snafus that occurred in that era of live broadcasting. Our guests will have a table of artifacts and memorabilia as well as items for sale. Don't miss this amazing weekend. Rumor has it that the Mushroom People might even make a guest appearance!

There will be art exhibits (with the participation of Hunter's Point Open Studios), live theatre and poetry, live and electronic music, food, and an awards ceremony recognizing specific individuals and organizations for their contribution. Ceremonies will include the Mayoral proclamation of 'SuperHero Day' in San Francisco.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit local organizations for their outstanding achievement. The Grant Avenue Follies, a San Francisco troupe of Asian American chorus girls who began performing in San Francisco as early as the 1940s, will perform on the California State University, East Bay stage July 24-25 following the Highlands Summer Theatre production of “Almond Eyes.”

The original musical by Jay Chee and JoAnn Yuen, directed by A. Fajilan, is based on the life of dancer Dorothy Takahashi and her partner, Paul Wing Jew (shortened to Toy and Wing for marquee appeal), who were known as the Asian Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire.

Discrimination on the West Coast during World War II dashed their dreams of fame in Hollywood and their careers concluded with the demise of the famed Chop Suey Circuit in San Francisco where Asian American performers (known as 'Orientals') entertained in elaborate supper clubs during the ‘40s and ‘50s.

Through Broadway-style music, dance and comedy, 'Almond Eyes' tells an uplifting story of love, breakups, and reunions that are interwoven with California's Asian American history.

Several members of the Grand Avenue Follies, who are now aged 60-76, will recreate a number to close CSUEB shows. Toy, now 91, is to attend opening night.

Both of these artist’s work is based in the exploration of seeing the world though childlike dreams. For art is the breath between the work and its viewer. Sometimes random and playful, it is the process itself that allows the collection of intention midstream. In this way, the Moose must persuade the Duck, as the work is pointing to a vision. Look, see it isn't all just all a thought experiment.

Cheryl Finfrock is an internationally known artist that creates monotypes, paintings on paper, canvas and wood. Narrative expressionism, humor, and symbolism are central throughout her work. Recent exhibits span US and Europe including New york City, San Francisco, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Berlin, Copenhagen, Montreal, Olomouc, Paris, and Sofia.

Sudhu Tewari is an artist, instrument builder, tinkerer and improviser. He has also been called a junkyard maven, bricoleur, and young-audio gadgeteer. An early interest in disassembling alarm clocks and coffee makers gave rise to electro-acoustic instruments constructed with the remains of discarded stereo equipment, kinetic sculptures and sound installations.

About Also: Cenk Ergun and Sudhu Tewari have been playing together for 8 years. They use home-made, circuit-bent, modified, found objects, electronic devices and musical instruments to create music in which all sounds are welcome. Their improvisatory style is informed by intensive listening, attention to detail, and a welcoming attitude towards any mistakes, accidents, and surprises the next moment might bring.

The concert features excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Patience' and Chinese opera 'Legend of the White Snake' (Sung in Chinese with English translations) by Taiwan composer Hsu Chang Wei. 'Patience' is a light hearted operetta, a satire of the Aesthetic Movement in the late 19th Century Britain. 'Legend of the White Snake' is a musical adaptation of the well-known Chinese myth, in which the white snake turned herself into a human for her love, and eventually sacrifices herself for her family.

The concert will also feature other choral works including the seldom-performed suite of Serenades by Mozart, 'The Snow' of Elgar and 'The Art of Ground Round' by P.D.Q. Bach.

This year we are bringing SF old-skool legends: Mark E. NextAid built a performance space at the NextAid/YWAV Community Center in Wert’s memory from funds raised at the three For the Kids events.

Now in its fifth year, the benefit event will help complete construction at the community center in which “Wert Terry Music and Performance Center” is at the heart of and open a new chapter of change For the Future. The Youth With A Vision Community Center, which also includes a micro-business facility, an energy efficient outdoor kitchen, a soccer field, organic gardens, a library and offices, will serve as a beacon of hope for the hundreds it serve, as well as, provide a model for future sustainable projects in Africa. Funds will also be allocated to NextAid’s next project, the Kawangware Street Children and Youth Project, a youth group consisting of former street kids from the slums of Nairobi who have organized their own business of producing gift bags and products for the safari tourism industry. Profits enable the participants to generate income for themselves and to take care of the community's orphaned or vulnerable children while providing a productive and positive environment for the youth. Bella Union Theatre Company introduces Bay Area audiences to a little-known work of a beloved author with their world-premiere adaptation of Jane Austen’s LADY SUSAN. One of Jane Austen’s earliest works, Lady Susan brings to life one of the most deliciously “bad” characters of Austen’s entire canon. In Christine U’Ren’s clever adaptation, the young Jane Austen is featured as an onstage character, and the audience watches as the author’s ideas take shape. Directed by Gina Baleria, Bella Union’s production of Lady Susan previews on July 2, opens on July 3, and runs Thursdays – Sundays through July 26, 2009 at the historic Berkeley City Club. An “epistolary novel” written almost entirely in the form of letters sent between characters, Jane Austen’s Lady Susan has rarely been staged and never filmed, despite its audacious heroine and lively plot. Fascination and deception come naturally to the beautiful, widowed Lady Susan who manages, “without the charm of youth,” to captivate every man who comes within her orbit. She schemes to marry the gentlemanly Reginald De Courcy while enjoying the attentions of the rakish Manwaring and consigning her sweetly intelligent daughter to dubious marital felicity with a vacuous dandy – all to the chagrin of her highly respectable former sister-in-law. Written in the early 1790’s, when Jane Austen was less than 20 years old, Lady Susan begins to explore many of the themes of Austen’s later works, and amply demonstrates the wit that would become the author’s hallmark.

Money raised from this event will enhance the capacity of the Guereda District Hospital in Eastern Chad. It is the only hospital in a region where there are several refugee camps with approximately 50,000 Darfuri refugees. It also serves approximately 110,000 Chadians who live in the area. All of these people are very poor and in great need. The closest hospital is almost 120 miles away.

These funds will go directly toward constructing and equipping the hospital's operating room, birthing suite, laboratory, and pharmacy, as well as toward training a Chadian medical team for the hospital that will be able to perform minor and major surgeries, internal medicine, pediatrics and emergency obstetric interventions.

American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is an international development organization motivated by Judaism’s imperative to pursue justice. AJWS is dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the developing world regardless of race, religion or nationality.

The Beep is back in town! They've been touring Europe, buying fashionable clothes, and playing in all the right clubs. Beep! is a Bay Area based piano trio. By pushing past the boundaries of the standard piano trio and exploring new sonic territories, Beep! has developed a genre defying sound. With original compositions, reinterpreted standards and pop songs, Beep! creates a listening experience that is inviting and challenging, melodic and complex.
