Many spa patrons have heard the term “Vichy shower” but they may not know exactly what it is. Well if you are one of those people…read on!

“A Vichy shower includes five to seven shower heads that are placed in a row over a cushioned table. During the treatment, a client lies on a cushioned table while water showers the body.” The origin of the shower came from Vichy, a town in central France known for its natural mineral springs. Most spas use the Vichy shower as a complement to treatments such as mud wraps and scrubs. Instead of jumping into a shower to rinse off after their treatment, the guest can simply lay and relax while enjoying the therapeutic benefits of the water raining down on them. The therapist can adjust the shower heads and water pressure to accommodate each guest’s specific needs.

The Vichy shower is truly a unique spa experience. We invite you to try one of our treatments such as the Chai Tea Mud Wrap in our Vichy shower room! You will surely LOVE IT!

In June, 1971, Bob and Alice Hing opened the Scottsdale Racquet Club, the first private tennis club in the City of Scottsdale. At the time, Scottsdale not only lacked a private tennis club, there were no public tennis facilities except local high school tennis courts. Although many clubs were built in the Scottsdale area since 1971, the Scottsdale Racquet Club, and its successor club, the Scottsdale Athletic Club, is today the only surviving club under continuous ownership.

There was always a great sense of tradition at the Scottsdale Racquet Club. Since 1973, it was the site of the Fiesta Bowl Senior Tennis Tournament, the nation’s largest all-senior tennis competition. The club hosted the USTA National Men’s 35 Hardcourt Championships beginning in 1991. Locals and snowbirds mingled comfortably at the Scottsdale Racquet Club. There was a sense of friendliness and camaraderie. Relationships developed and lasted for a lifetime. This indefinable quality carries over into the Scottsdale Athletic Club and Scottsdale Resort Club.

The Hing family’s interest in tennis, however, has encompassed much more than owning and operating a club, or running tournaments. Bob and Alice have held Sectional and District rankings. Together they have captured nine mixed doubles championships in the Fiesta Bowl events. The seven Hing children have all been interested in the sport. Greg and Roberta have held national rankings. Greg was captain of the Stanford tennis team and a member of three NCAA championship squads. Most recently in 1998, Greg won the 35 men’s doubles in the Fiesta Bowl, and in 2000, won the USTA National Men’s 35 Hardcourt doubles title. Roberta was a four-year member of Harvard’s Ivy League championship teams, and captained the team in her senior year. Dari and Elizabeth both held high Southwest rankings as juniors. Jennifer, Rebecca and Valerie have competed in high school competition and USTA leagues.

Because of their interest in total fitness, Bob and Alice, in 1999, began planning a multifaceted facility that would carry the concept of fitness to a five-star standard. Their intent was to create a healthy, active, stimulating and exciting lifestyle that would greatly enhance quality of life. The result is the Scottsdale Athletic Club and Scottsdale Resort Club.

We pat ourselves on the back for finding this moderately priced gem. Opened in May 2003, the Scottsdale Resort & Athletic Club is a petite 85 all-suite accommodation that rivals many five-star hotels. Although it may not wow you with external beauty or a million-dollar landscape, dollar for dollar it could be the best resort in all of Phoenix.

The building’s design requires guests to enter their chambers via motel-like outside doors, but once inside travelers are instantly aware that this is no budget lodging. Full kitchens, high quality furnishings, working fireplaces and huge floor plans with separate living and sleeping areas create a home away from home. All bedrooms boast premium mattresses, high thread count sheets and tasteful decor. In addition, most one-bedroom units can be expanded into 2-bedroom suites to accommodate families or larger groups.

The resort’s owner is a talented tennis fanatic, and the meticulously maintained outdoor-lighted hard courts evidence his addiction. This pristine racquet facility is adjacent to a 2-story full-service athletic club that is complimentary to resort guests. Inside the immaculate club, athletic-minded travelers are treated to many of the latest and greatest cardio machines, weight equipment and a full slate of exercise classes, including spin. Life Fitness 95Ti series treadmills, Cybex bikes and 15 stack-loaded weight stations are samples of the club’s stellar supply.

Swimmers are included in the fun. The 25-meter outdoor lap pool contains only one floating lane line, but stripes are marked on its bottom to create 3 lanes total.

Complete spa servides top off a worth fitness experience, not to mention the Club’s tasty restaurant, which serves Eurasian cuisine well into the night.

Note: Golfers will be happy to learn that discounted greens fees and preferential tee-times are available at the neighboring par 70 Silverado Golf Course.

Visionaries Bob and Alice Hing put Arizona’s tennis community on the map in 1971 when they opened a racquet club at a time when not a single tennis club or public court existed in Scottsdale. In its second coming as the Scottsdale Resort & Athletic Club in 1999, the Hings expanded their vision with the addition of guest rooms, a multi-level fitness center, a bistro and championship tennis courts. But up until this past March, just two tiny treatment rooms served as the spa.

Eurasia Spa was brought to life under the watchful eye of Rebecca Hing, daughter of the owners and director of resort marketing and public relations. “When we decided to open a spa, I wanted to carry the Asian theme throughout, since part of our philosophy with the entire resort and athletic club is about wellness, and much of the Asian culture promotes wellness through their food and physical therapies,” she says.

Design: The Zen-like simplicity of the 2,500-square-foot spa is energized with splashes of color from orange silk fan sconces and commissioned paintings by brush artist Joyce Hing, the owner’s sister. The river rock entryway leads to a central refreshment area and a meditation room, which can be closed off for privacy by hand-crafted bamboo shoji doors. Each of the five therapy suites are named after Asian blooms-the lotus, orchid, peony, azalea and wisteria-and each pays homage to its Western side with a bronze Cosanti windbell (the bells are made in support of the Arcosanti Project, an urban laboratory 65 miles north of Phoenix). A separate nail salon with two iJoy pedi-thrones and an outdoor patio complete the package.

Treatment: While the menu offers a host of classic spa treatments laced with Asian-inspired aromas and techniques, I opted for the spa’s signature Sound of Peaceful Healing. The fusion treatment starts with the sound of the Cosanti bell and follows with a hot stone massage, warm soy body wrap and full-body massage. The 120-minute, $220 treatment was totally gratifying.

Tennis anyone? Guests of the spa can take advantage of the massive athletic complex. Catch a yoga or ai-chi (tai chi in the pool) class, take a dip in the lap pool or schedule time on one of the 11 meticulously manicured tennis courts.

Delighted: Would I go again? You bet. But next time, I would pad my treatment time with a few hours to steep poolside in my lucky fortune at finding this quiet, family run pearl.

The names alone are enough to trigger a relaxation response: Velvet Reprieve, The Sound of Peaceful Healing, Green and White Tea Sundance Body Facial. To loosen up even more, just visualize the warm cocooning wrap that comes with each treatment. All are trademarks of the new Eurasia Spa, a showpiece of the updated Scottsdale Resort and Athletic Club, a deliberately simplistic getaway tucked in the shadow of Camelback Mountain.

Like the resort itself, the spa remains true to the Chinese roots of the Hing family, owners since 1971. Cross a small bridge to a space where bamboo, cool stone flooring, and silk fans proffer a stark contrast to the Southwest landscape outside. Slip into a kimono and unwind in the Tranquility Room. Then step into one of five therapy suites named after revered Asian blooms: Lotus, Orchid, Peony, Azalea, and Wisteria. An exclusive Cosanti Bell ritual heralds each treatment with sound and rhythm to lull you into a tension-free zone.

The Scottsdale Resort and Athletic Club features 85 rooms, including 2,500-square-foot Presidential Villas. The resort also recently added 29 deluxe rooms, suites, and villas with Jacuzzis, gas fireplaces, and fully equipped gourmet kitchens.
The Eurasia Spa at the Scottsdale Resort Club may be brand-spanking new, but the folks there sure know a thing or two about tending to sunburned and sensitive skin. Eurasia’s Velvet Retrieve treatment is a perfect example. In this relaxing hour-plus treatment, you will first be covered in a gentle moisturizing emulsion made from a customized blend of fresh coconut, vanilla and herbal extracts. After removing this tropical concoction, the body is then massaged with warm coconut oil to leave the skin silky smooth. Besides being non-abrasive and gentle on the skin, the key to this moisturizing treatment is really in the ingredients. Coconut oil has antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, and is well known as a skin soother. To tropical islanders, the coconut is both a source of food and medicine, thus nicknamed, “The Tree of Life”.

There’s a new spa in Scottsdale–and it’s making quite a first impression. Introduce yourself to the Scottsdale Athletic Club’s Eurasia Spa with The Sound of Peaceful Healing–a 120-minute sensory journey that uses sound, touch and smell to revive the senses and restore a feeling of calm.

The session begins with somewhat of a “Carol of the Bells”. But Eurasia’s Cosanti bells are no ordinary jingle bells: They vibrate long after they are rung, easing you into a relaxed and meditative state of mind. As an added bonus, the bells are thought to transfer their healing powers to the receiver.

After your mind has become a blank slate, hot stones are placed on your body, relieving any aches and pains. Heated pouches filled with organic herbs and essential oils (also placed over the body) will appeal to your sense of smell especially with customizable blends like jasmine and sandalwood or lemongrass and ginger. The treatment wraps up with a massage that leaves you too serene to form even one cohesive thought.
