<itunes:summary>When it comes to topics in self-defense handguns, there are few debates that are hotter than what caliber you should count on in your concealed carry handgun. There are those that carry a .45ACP because there is no .46 and those that prefer the .380 because of its diminutive size and ease of concealment. Of course, there’s also every opinion in between. When we take a logical look at what caliber we should carry for defensive purposes we can start to get to the bottom of this complex question.
Today let’s talk about caliber for your concealed carry handgun and your home defense handguns.

What is the Best Concealed Carry Handgun Caliber

It helps us to understand how it is that ammunition works to physiologically stop our threat. Grant Cunningham has an extensive set of posts that talks about this topic that you can read here.

It really boils down to two things bullets need to do:

The bullets need to penetrate deep enough into the body to get to something the body finds important to survival
The bullets need to do damage when they get to those important parts.

Many people fail to consider the multidimensional approach we need to take to achieve these two goals as efficiently as possible.
Much of the debate that surrounds caliber selection is ill logical and frustrating to me. People base their choices on a single attribute of ammunition or maybe worse what their uncle who was in the war thinks or what their local police department carries. While your favorite uncle might have some valid experience from combat and your local PD certainly should have valid reasons for the round selection they have made. We must understand that our context as a concealed carry holder is different than the military and law enforcement aspect would lead us to believe.

Unlike the military or the police, The law abiding citizen. Typically carries a firearm concealed. This means that a balance must be struck between the ability to conceal and recoil management of the handgun and we talked about this in detail in episode 331.

In addition when it comes to law-enforcement it must be taken into consideration that the context of police work is different than that of concealed carry. For example, LE officers have a much higher likelihood for the need to shoot through intermediate barriers. Although certainly a possibility, this is not typical for those involved in concealed carry. Shooting through intermediate barriers can have a profound effect on terminal ballistics. For this reason we can’t simply assume that what our local PD carries is what we should carry.

The military comparison doesn’t work well either. Those that carry handgun in the military are typically required to carry full metal jacket ammunition. On the contrary, if you carry concealed, you should be looking for modern bonded hollow point bullets. The terminal performance of full metal jacket compared to modern bonded hollow points is like night and day. Expansion is the big difference. This means that military personnel may have some very valid reasons for carrying a caliber your average citizen might want to avoid. Remember when selecting the best concealed carry ammunition bonded hollow points are better than full metal jacketed rounds regardless of caliber.

Instead of looking at a single area of performance the savvy defensive shooter will seek to balance out a group of characteristics to achieve the most efficient results.

The information I am presenting today is similar in many ways to the concepts that are being taught by Defensive Firearms Coaches around the country. You can find these instructors by taking a look at Combat Focus Shooting or doing a quick search for Intro[...]</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In the past few episodes we have been discussing how it is that we can choose the Best Defensive Firearms.
We know that handguns have some advantages over other firearms because of their size, their portability, their capacity, and the ability of the shooter to manage recoil.
These advantages apply to handguns as home defense tools as we discussed in episode 0330 but the advantages of the handgun can be even more important when we discuss Concealed Carry Handguns.
Today we are going to take a look at selecting the best defensive handgun for concealed carry.

Selecting the Best Concealed Handgun
First of all remember that when we’re talking about the defensive use of firearms we are talking about a high-stakes, life or death situation. It is because of this we cannot afford to make compromises. That is why we are discussing the attributes of the BEST Concealed Carry Handgun today. We can’t afford to settle for average.
Many aspects of violence are out of our control. There is no reason not to prepare ourselves ahead of time by having the best tools available to us.
Don’t skimp on your Defensive handgun.
Next, whenever we’re talking about home defense handguns or concealed carry handguns we need to make our selection based on reliability and efficiency. Defensive Firearms need to work and they need to work well in the way that our body operates naturally.
When we talked about the best home defense handgun our discussion focused on the balance between power and recoil management.
When we are looking to balance the traits of the best concealed carry handgun the two traits we need to consider are the ability to conceal the handgun and our ability to mange recoil.
Lets start out by talking about concealment:
Many people tip the scale toward handguns that are easy to conceal. It is easy to understand why:
Handguns can be inconvenient to carry
1. heavy
2. large
3. uncomfortable
4. difficult to conceal
So people naturally select handguns that make concealment easier. These handguns tend to be light weight, small, more comfortable to deal with and ultimately easier to conceal.
Manufacturers have done a great job in introducing firearms to the market that people want to carry. The Ruger LCP, the Beretta Nano and now Pico are great examples of small firearms that people might choose for concealed carry.
These guns are smaller, they are lighter, they are easier to conceal and in many ways they are more comfortable, however, when we are dealing with trying to find the best concealed carry handgun. We have to remember that it’s a balance. Yes, you actually need to be able to shoot your concealed carry pistol.
Let’s take a look at the other side, recoil management.
Just like with the best home defense handgun, recoil management is all about physics. There are several factors that can affect our ability to manage recoil and we’re can take a look at three in particular:
1. The size of the gun.
2. The mass of the handgun.
3. The power of the cartridge.
The size of the gun.
When it comes to the size of a pistol it is important to understand that the larger the surface area of the back strap of the gun is the better job it will do distributing recoil to the hand. If a handgun is relatively small in size and makes very little contact with the hand in the back strap area, it will tend to have a greater felt recoil. On the other hand, if the guns back strap is relatively large, it will spread the same amount of energy over a larger surface area in the shooter will perceive the recoil to be less.
In general, when all other things are kept the same a larger gun will feel like it recoils less.
The mass of the gun.
When we talk about the mass of the gun [...]</itunes:summary>

If we choose a handgun for home defense it is important that we choose the best home defense handgun so we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves or others should we need to In a home defense scenario.

A home defense scenario is a high stakes situation

we’re talking about a situation with the potential threat
the lives of our loved ones and our own lives may depend on the tools we select

As a result we can make no compromises in our selection

it’s not okay to use a hunting gun or a target shooting gun for home defense
defensive firearms have specific properties that are unique to them
any compromise we make in our defensive firearm is a compromise in our personal safety

We are looking to select the best home-defense handgun and for that reason you shouldn’t be making compromises when it comes to our selection.
When selecting the best home defense handgun, we really need to consider balancing two main factors.
1. The first factor is power.
2. The second factor is recoil management.
When we look at power of the handgun and recoil management we can see that there is an inverse relationship between the two.
In general we can expect that when we need to use our home defense handgun we will need to fire more than once. So here is how I suggest you balance out power and recoil management:
For the best home defense handgun choose a full size 9mm handgun. 9mm when paired with a 147grain modern bonded hollow point has terminal performance in our threat that is comparable to other reasonable handgun cartridges and when we place the 9mm into a full size handgun, the recoil is relatively easy to control. This recoil management allows for quick follow-up shots should we need them.
Full size 9mm automatics provide an outstanding wounding capacity when compared to other handguns. Wounding capacity is a topic for another podcast so stay tuned for that.
The attributes of the best home defense handguns are unique to its purpose. In episode 331 we will take a look at the attributes of the best concealed carry handgun. Make sure you stay tuned to learn more about the best defensive handguns along with some more in depth information about why I prefer the 9 mm cartridge over other defensive ammunition selections.

Quality Considerations for Choosing the Best Defensive Firearm

What we need to focus on is basing our decisions on our reality.
We must consider:

Our context
Science
Empirical Evidence
Logic and Reasoning

When it comes to Defensive firearms the handgun has it’s advantages and disadvantages just like any other platform and we must carefully consider both sides as we work to determine if the best home defense tool is the handgun.

Advantages of Defensive Handguns

Size

Portable
Easy to secure

Easy to use

Recoil is manageable
Capacity is relatively high

Readily available
Reliable versions are available

Disadvantages of Defensive Handguns

Less tissue damage per round than other systems
Precision shots take more time and effort to make

We need to make sure that when we select defensive tools we are choosing the best tools. Our life may depend on the choice so when you are looking at a firearm for home defense think carefully about your choice and be sure to choose the best self-defense firearm for you.

If when you think about the information we have presented here a handgun doesn’t fit the bill as the best home defense tool you might want to take a look at my defensive shotgun video series. Head to www.SafetySolutionsAcademy.com and enter you email to receive the video series directly to your in box.

Our next podcast will deal with looking at what attributes that make up the best home defense handgun.

Today's show might be one of the more important podcasts I have ever recorded. as many of you know, our Second Amendment Rights are under attack and I must say that I have never been more concerned about our rights than I am today. In what seems to be a perfect storm, anti-gun politicians and activists are feeling more bold and empowered than ever before and when that fact is coupled with the understandable complacency of today's gun owner, I see a serious threat on the horizon. Today we will take a look at that threat and some no-nonsense steps we can take to win the fight.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/t1AeWJRUO14" height="1" width="1"/>

How quickly the tide can turn. 10 days ago if you would have suggested that an Assault Weapons Ban could actually pass into law, I would have laughed. Yes, I know it was going to be pushed for in Obama's second term, but I didn't see it as a true possibility. Today, for the first time in a long time, I am concerned. If you are interested in your Second Amendment Rights, you may have cause to be worried too. Today we will take a look at gun rights under fire.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/86DvWhVV4dM" height="1" width="1"/>

Yes, I know it was going to be pushed for in Obama's second term, but I didn't see it as a true possibility. Today, for the first time in a long time, I am concerned. If you are interested in your Second Amendment Rights, you may have cause to be worried too. Today we will take a look at gun rights under fire.</itunes:summary>

Most folks that I know and spend time with are interested in self-defense to some level. As a result these people carry gear that they believe will help to keep themselves safer. Almost without exception a knife is part of that gear. Knives are handy tools both from a utility standpoint and in terms of self-defense. Yet most people have spent little to no time training to use a knife as a defensive weapon. Today at Ohio Krav Maga in Hilliard a group of peple worked to remedy that situation by training with Alessandro Padovani of Safe Faster Defense. We asked Ale to take a few minutes to sit down with us and talk about preparing to carry a knife as a defensive tool.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/3yCYS1RuKKA" height="1" width="1"/>

With advances in LED technology lights have gotten brighter, smaller, and much more feature rich. One of the problems that comes along with features, however, can be complexity. When we are involved in any type of emergency situation that requires the use of our light, we want the operation of that light to be both simple and intuitive.
School shootings are a complex and challenging problem to solve. The reactionary position that LE, school administrators and students find themselves in seems to be a difficult scenario in which to succeed, however, the stakes are high. We value our children tremendously as we should and a the same time we often leave them in precariously exposed positions without the tools to deal with serious problems that can occur. Some news this month would seem to indicate that we are correcting course to a degree and working to regain ground in the battle to keep our children safe. Today we will talk about some of the issues that surround school violence.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/EBKYJHfH8Dc" height="1" width="1"/>

Trigger control can be an issue for many shooters when it comes to precision and shooting. Although there can be a hyper-focus on precision in defensive shooting, it is an issue that needs to be addressed. Getting the hit when the target dictates precision based on size or distance is a complex motor skill that requires the defensive shooter to maintain proper sight alignment and sight picture while pressing the trigger to the rear. Any deviation in the sights during the trigger press results in deviation on the target. Too much deviation and the shot is a miss. Many people believe that the proper solution to this issue is dry fire practice and to some degree they are correct. The issue with dry firing, however, is that there is very little feedback to the shooter. Thousands of rounds of dry fire practice isn't going to help you if what you are doing is WRONG! Today we will take a look at how the products that LaserLyte produces can give you the quality feedback you need to help make your dry fire practice more efficient.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/PdJeLJydwwc" height="1" width="1"/>

<itunes:summary>Trigger control can be an issue for many shooters when it comes to precision and shooting.
So the question is: Where is that tipping point for dots on handguns? Has the battery life, the size of the optic, its reliability and durability reached a point where the balance tips to the advantage of speed and precision at distance? Are there other factors that we don't even understand yet that may make red dots problematic?

These are the questions that I am interested in answering and of course, the way to do it is to jump in and study then procure and test an optic. The Trijicon RMR is one of the premire optics to mount on a handgun and Trijicon is who I am asking questions of. Improvements in design, manufactureing processes and materials has lead to smaller packages, higher capacities and real reliability in the small 9mm handguns of today. Here at the NASGW Expo in Orlando, Florida we took some time to sit down and talkd with SCCY Industries to better understand what what they have to offer in the market.
We live in a world that is dominated by what happens online. One of the issues that we run into in the world of defensive firearms is that the online world isn't necessarily friendly to firearms. Paypal is the defacto payment system on the web but Paypal in general will not allow gun related transactions to take place within their terms of service. This leaves a bit of a vacuum in the industry. Today we are sitting down with Ira Goodstadt with PistolPay about how his company is filling that niche.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/jYun3ImuijU" height="1" width="1"/>

In my opinion it is imperative that the student/teacher relationship is based on trust.

We are dealing with life and death issues when we deal with combatives.
The student must trust that the instructor is giving the best information possible.
Many people mistake the instructors best effort with the instructor being required to be right I disagree

In my opinion in the self-defense training industry we focus on the "glamorous" dangers to the exclusion of many of the more likely risks we face in our environment. Don't get me wrong, we need to talk about the reality that things can go wrong in self-defense training. Let's face it, any time we train with guns, the risk is there that someone could get shot. There is no way to bring the risk to 0. When we train with unarmed skills it is completely possible that some one could get their bell rung. Yes we should take precautions to try and prevent these situations, but in my opinion the trainers and trainees can't stop there.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/7HjCjUVWGxI" height="1" width="1"/>

Life is full of struggles! Some are physical, some are intellectual, some are financial, some are emotional. The list of challenges we face goes on and on and what amazes me is how often we get in the way of solving our own problems. Right now I am realizing that I am in the midst of making some ridiculously painful decisions regarding my pickup truck. The process that I am going through reminds me of something that I often see my students struggle with in class. So, today we are going to talk about my 1995 Dodge and training.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/EdUOkWWaz7Y" height="1" width="1"/>

Recently I stopped to look at the rules that were posted in our local YMCA swimming pool. There were a total of 14 rules listed one of which was, "No breath holding contests." It was really frustrating to read the rules that were trying to address very specific situations that were considered a danger and missing the big picture. There was no mention of "Swim within your ability," or any other rule that addressed safety as a concept. When we have rules like, "No breath holding contests," I always look for the rules that say, "Do not park your vehicles in the swimming pool," and "No chainsaws allowed in the hot tub." We can never address EVERY safety concern with a rule and we need to stop trying. When we attempt to cover it all specifically we will miss something, we will smother those we are trying to protect with minutia and we short circuit out goal of creating a safer environment.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/FajHKvMYZdU" height="1" width="1"/>

I don't prescribe to the idea of safety based on good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods, but we can look at some patterns and do our best to choose where we spend our time. Where we live, work and go to school all tend to be what they are we mustn't forget that we control our own destiny and if we don't like our surroundings it is within our power to effect change in our lives. There are decisions that are even more under our control such as where we shop and where we spend our recreational time that we have even more control over.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ssa_podcast/~4/ejooCI3nulI" height="1" width="1"/>
