Why the Former Cult Member was Cut from America’s Next Top Model

Let’s discuss the girls from last night’s America’s Next Top Model episode, shall we?

Ren: I loved her first picture in the hat. Her voice makes me feel exhausted, and her attitude is really depressing. She reminds me of Elyse from cycle 1. Although Ren is much more of a snob. Andre Leon Talley said of Ren’s first photo that she looked like a woodland nymph. But of her SECOND photo? Yea. Things got real, and Nigel said she looked like she was doing an ad for the H1N1 vaccine. (As in, she looked miserable and like crap.) She was in the bottom two for the second photoshoot, but she stayed. I’m sure she still has time to redeem her crappy behavior and rise to the top.
Angelea: I don’t like Angelea from what I know of her. But her photos are consistently really good. The first photo she did was of her naked with just pretty shoes on – and it was an amazing photo! I DID want those shoes, btw.
Raina: While she can’t stop from looking like Denise Richards, the judges love her. Talley said of her first photo that she reminded him of a courtesan. She didn’t know what that was, but ah well.
Gabrielle: She was eliminated first, and I guess that’s okay because I didn’t love her look. But I kind of almost liked her photo. But maybe that’s only because her pants and hair kind of matched and looked pretty in this golden shimmery way.
Jessica: She had the best photo of the week. Tyra says she has a natural gift for posing. She lacks edge, though.
Naduah: Ah, the former cultist. Gotta have one of those in every good ANTM cycle, right? In her first photo she did badly, and she did even worse in the second one. At the house girls were calling her a pathological liar. What I don’t understand is, if she has SO much experience 1, why did they let her into the competition? 2, why wasn’t she better? She was eliminated second. Thank you, LORD. And why was she eliminated? Because she was TERRIBLE.
Alasia: She is loved by Talley, so she gets to stay. She is one of the most interesting, if not irritating, girls. She was in the bottom two for the first photo, but stayed because Talley said he’d put her “raw, beautiful photo” up in his salon. And then we got to hear Tyra try to be all French.

Misc notes:

The first photoshoot used items from Custo Barcelona. The photographer was Jonathan Mannion.
The girls has a challenge to walk down a runway with two swinging pendulums, wearing amazing gowns from RACHEL ROY! I love Rachel Roy. Her 2010 spring designs were amazing, esp the yellow dress Alexandra wore. (If you want to remember it, just think of who fell twice on the runway.)
The people who get involved in ANTM have to be careful. Rachel Roy had picked a challenge winner who would be featured on her website. And then at panel, as a guest judge, the judges remarked how old that girl (who is so forgettable to me that I cannot remember her name at all) photographed. Roy expressed some concern, and Tyra instantly was like “Oh, she’s usually great, don’t worry!” How could Tyra know how anyone “usually” is when it’s only week two?

LOST Recon Review

LOST - "Recon" - Locke tasks Sawyer with a mission, on "Lost," TUESDAY, MARCH 23 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/MARIO PEREZ) JOSH HOLLOWAY

We got a big dose of Sawyer in the LOST episode “Recon”. While the Sawyer we already know and love (or hate, depending on who you are and how heartless you may be) on the island went on a spy mission for Locke, the alternate universe (AU) Sawyer was busy as a cop. Both versions of Sawyer have similarities, as you’d expect. But what are those similarities? In both stories he looked like maybe he was being conned, but got the upper hand in the end. In both stories he felt remorse about a girl and reached out to her. In both stories his loyalty to those whom he truly cared about was evident (Miles/his partner or people like Kate and Sayid). In both stories, he was keeping secrets.In both stories he swore allegiance to someone or something (The Police Force) but had his own agenda. In both stories he was a wounded, uber hot guy.

Also in this episode we saw Claire try to kill Kate. Sayid sat by and did nothing to stop it. Right before that, Sayid did say he was not feeling right. But the fact that Kate never said anything to him along the lines of “WTF, dude, that she-bitch with the bad wig was trying to slit my throat!” makes me curious. Are we just going to let Sayid dwell and float off into crazy land? Later on, we saw Claire cry and come to Kate for a hug. Because we’ve been told that something dark is inside Claire, I can’t believe she’s actually forgiven Kate. And it’s sad that Claire probably can’t be saved.

Great moments of “Recon”

Sawyer holding a giant Sunflower. That is just so him. Not that he’s sunny, but that’s the flower he’d pick for a girl over a bouquet of roses.
When Sawyer found the cages he shared with Kate, and her dress, it made me ache with regret and nostalgia.
Now that we know that Sawyer is a cop, and he still let a handcuffed Kate get away from the cops at the airport, I feel like he might let her escape again. Or at least he’ll take a special interest in her when she’s at the jail.
I love Sawyer/Kate aka Skate. Is that obvious yet? The fireside chat was amazing. I love how he singled her out as someone he’s taking off the island with him. Part of me wonders if that’s really all who he plans on taking. Although, no – I’m pretty sure he’d take Jin, Sun, and Miles. Hurley, too.
Did you see Charlie’s brother in the alternate universe? Liam Pace was asking about his brother and his drug charges. Man, I miss Charlie.
James Ford aka Sawyer in the AU used LeFleur as his safety word! Why does Sawyer like the French word for “flower” so much?
Miles as James’ partner was perfect, because Miles is as close to a friend as Sawyer ever seemed to have had on the island.
The clock on was nightstand is 8:42 (the nuuuumbers!)

It looks like that in the next episode of LIFE UNEXPECTED Baze continues to be the hero in Lux’s life, while Cate is an enemy. I can’t help but wish that Baze would realize how much it hurts Cate to be shut out, and try to encourage Lux to let Cate into the loop. One of our contributors, Martin, is excited about what’s on Syfy tonight. Am I a mind reader? No. I just read his twitter, duhs. (It’s the ultimate stalking tool of the uh, 2000’s. I stalk you all!) Goonthealmighty: RT: @joshuagates: Please RT: Destination Truth returns TONIGHT to Syfy! 10pm/9c after an all new Ghost Hunters. Tune in!

And it’s true. There’s a new episode of GHOST HUNTERS on at 9/8 c on Syfy, and then it’s the season premiere of DESTINATION TRUTH at 10/9 c. On GHOST HUNTERS the TAPS team will be looking into a haunted Irish Pub in NY, and on DESTINATION TRUTH Josh Gates is going to track down a leprechaun. I hope he’s nice to it – her/him! Not that I watched CHARMED or anything, but remember those episodes where they had leprechauns? They always said something funny like “Slanty Slanty!”. No, really. I wonder if Rose McGowan remembers. Hum. I hope you guys have a good St. Patty’s day. People are going to try and make me eat corned beef. To that I say: MACARONI AND CHEESE.

LIFE UNEXPECTED Ratings Went Up, Up, UP this week!

Despite talk that LIFE UNEXPECTED might get canceled, the show had amazing ratings this week! I love this show, and would be shocked if it was canceled. Especially since Kerr Smith said we’ll get to see more of Ryan in season 2! Tell your friends to watch the show. Make it the silver lining to Monday’s. Monday’s are horrible, yet Monday night TV is good. It’s like life wants to reward us. Indulge in your reward!

The CW’s critically acclaimed freshman drama LIFE UNEXPECTED popped in the ratings last night, scoring the show’s best performance since its second episode (on 1/25/10) in women 18-34 (1.9/6), adults 18-34 (1.3/4), women 18-49 (1.4/4) and total viewers (2.1mil), according to Live Plus Same Day Nielsen ratings for Monday, March 15, 2010.

LIFE UNEXPECTED posted dramatic improvement over last week’s original episode, growing 36% in women 18-34, 27% in women 18-49, 18% in adults 18-34, 11% in adults 18-49 (1.0/3) and 7% in total viewers.

Katie Stevens on American Idol Looked the Part but Failed to Deliver the Vocals

If only Katie Stevens was less…how she is. Her voice is decent, but not great. But she’s corned the market on the young teenage girls who want to see her in the competition because they can relate to her the most and see her as the real life extension of themselves. She’s the elevator music on the show – the easy to swallow, predictable contestant with very little substance to offer. If she had the voice of Taylor Swift (or at least the personality) she would be great. But she doesn’t. She is forgettable.

Katie performed “Wild Horses” last night, and the song arrangement was off-putting. But she looked perfect. Her hair was shiny, her makeup was great, her flower necklace was whimsical and her poofy dress was highly covetable. The images of her performing were great. But with sound, it makes me cringe.

It’s Never too Late to Join the Scooby Gang

Get ready for new live action Scooby-Doo movie. As a follow up to the well-received Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins, SCOOBY-DOO! CURSE OF THE LAKE MONSTER is hopeful to entertain people of all ages. The movie will air on Cartoon Network in fall 2010 and be released on DVD through Warner Home Video in early 2011. The cast is the same that was in Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins: Robbie Amell as Fred, Kate Melton as Daphne, Hayley Kiyoko as Velma and Nick Palatas as Shaggy. Scooby-Doo will be a CGI doggy.

Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster finds the Mystery Inc. gang heading toward summer jobs at a country club owned by Daphne’s uncle, only to stumble onto strange happenings around the local lake—including mystical moonstones, creepy characters and a Frog Monster on the loose. There’s mystery afoot and romance in the air that only the fearful foursome-plus-one—Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo—can solve in this Warner Premiere production.

Women in Science Will Probably Save our World | Meet Nan Hauser

Nan Hauser has spent a large part of her life studying the behavior of whales and dolphins. There’s still a lot that we don’t know about these large mammals. And they still aren’t safe in this world. We didn’t ever really save the whales in one grand sweep – so break out your bumper stickers again.

Hauser is the founder and director of the Center for Cetacean Research & Conservation, which tries to helps whales, dolphins and porpoises survive. So forget for a moment that you’re an adult (or teen, or maybe even a Grandparent) with problems and a bank account, and put yourself back in the shoes of your preschool-aged self. Remember the mystery of the whales! They’re fascinating. And there’s not one around here that’s going to swallow you like in Pinocchio. You’re safe. But they might not be.

As part of this month’s Women In Science event, the Smithsonian Channel will be airing “Footprints on the Water: The Nan Hauser Story” this Saturday, 3/20 at 8PM.

LIFE UNEXPECTED Falls Down at the Formal

Life Unexpected "Formal Reformed" PH: The CW

Last night we had the LIFE UNEXPECTED episode “Formal Reformed”. Watching Baze try to apologize to Math by making his favorite sandwich (pastrami with banana peppers) talk to him was really cute. But the episode itself wasn’t my favorite. And I can only talk about this show openly because at my core – I love it. So let’s talk, gang.

I give a thumbs up to:

I loved the way they wrote in commentary on how Shiri Appleby talks, without it coming across as malicious. Writing for the actors you have is a sign that the writers/actors have a true connection. Which is great about a show.
Bug came back for Lux.
And speaking of the girl who annoys me so much I could cry tears of blood – I’m glad she was able to stick up for herself to him. You really can’t get respect if you don’t demand it.

I give a thumbs down to:

Maybe because the character of Lux is based so closely on the creator/writer – no one wants to give much input on this character. But someone needs to tell Liz Tigelaar that Lux is annoying the hell out of everyone. More annoying than those kids on GOSSIP GIRL, even.
What’s sad is that there’s no hope for Cate/Math, but he’s actually a great guy for her.
There was almost NO Ryan in this episode.
I wasn’t wild about Lux’s dress, it seemed shorter than I thought it was.
The end moment of Baze and Cate had no real emotions for me because I knew Baze had Cate’s sister in his bed. It makes him a scumball. Seriously, Baze sleeping with Abby is a great plot point – but from Lux and Cate’s pov, that’s just full of bullshit. We want to say Baze is a nice guy, but nice guys don’t do that. Think of the kid!
Lux’s random use of the word ‘transcendent’ bothered me because it was awkward and it sounded like another character would be talking. Seriously. It’s kind of like having a character spout out a French phrase, when you know they don’t speak French. It’s weird. If they want to write Lux up as smarter and more wordy – please, do it, but don’t just randomly tease us.
There was a major lack of witty quotes.
