Recent trends in the database industry have lead to a number of challenges for managing SQL Server. Most databases grow in size over time. Regulatory requirements mandate maintaining certain amounts of data online. Users also want to see more of their data. And the number of users for database applications grows over time as users discover where relevant data is located. To address these challenges, DBAs and other IT professionals must look to new technology to continue to perform their jobs effectively and in the same amount of time. In this session, well explore the challenges of increased storage and consolidation, log shipping, clustering and other solutions to help the true heroes of SQL Server meet the test.

The ADF 11g Area Template - for micro level layout design patterns

(Lucas Jellema) ADF 11g offers various facilities for reusables. To name a few:

Task Flows provide packaged, self contained functionality that consists of both User Interface and Data Bindings and potentially even some process logic and multi step navigation. Task flows can expose parameters that accept values used to dynamically influence the task flows behavior. Task flows do not expose facets (which could be an interesting extension of the task flow mechanism). Task flows can publish events that ADF can propagate to consumers outside the region that consumes the task flow.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sswug/dVyS/~4/O99rkTihdp8" height="1" width="1"/>

(Kenneth Downs) This week in the Database Programmer we look at something called an "UPSERT", the strange trick where an insert command may magically convert itself into an update if a row already exists with the provided key. This trick is very useful in a variety of cases. This week we will see its basic use, and next week we will see how the same idea can be used to materialize summary tables efficiently.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/sswug/dVyS/~4/mDdXvVlwSNU" height="1" width="1"/>
