Z2K9

Nothing like a little schadenfreude to close out the year. Beginning after midnight Tuesday, owners of the 30GB Zune found their devices inexplicably frozen in the kind of worldwide, near-simultaneous fail that could only be orchestrated by a company like Microsoft. Here’s the official fix, which requires you to sit tight until after noon GMT on January 1.

I’ve been watching David Gilmour’s “Remember That Night” concert video a lot recently and Richard’s performance is one of the things that keeps me coming back.
Adaptive Path's New CEO

Congratulations to my former colleagues at Adaptive Path on the hire of their new CEO, Michael Meyer. He seems to have just the right credentials for the job at this interesting point in AP’s evolution. I’ll forgive him for being a Harvard MBA since he also happens to be a Batten Fellow at Darden.

Lane Becker Doesn't Disappoint

Lane was unexpectedly snowed in at Lake Tahoe and missed his flight, but through the miracle of technology we successfully videoconferenced him into the panel. Hooray! Or, as they say in Charlottesville, wahoowah!

Fader's Foibles

Wharton is without question a great business school, and great business schools are generally full of great minds. So I was more than a little disappointed to read Wharton marketing professor Peter Fader’s comments about Apple’s iPhone in a recent Knowledge@Wharton interview.

My biggest problem with Fader’s critique is that it’s painfully obvious the guy did zero research before the interview. He definitely didn’t watch Steve Jobs’s Macworld keynote, or else he wouldn’t have claimed the lack of Mac-related announcements was “a signal that they’re not going to be developing or supporting [the Mac] as much as they used to.” Or that the corporate name change to Apple Inc. was an “admission of defeat.” Or that the iPhone’s lack of a keyboard is a “really, really important” missing feature. Um, not having a plastic keyboard is the whole point of the device! Fader could have saved himself and Wharton a lot of embarrassment if he’d done his homework rather than shooting from the hip. I doubt he’d expect anything less from his students in the classroom.
