China says Japan sent 'shockingly wrong' signal on Taiwan

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said it was "shocking" that the Japanese leader had openly sent the wrong signal regarding Taiwan. His official statement is the latest development in a dispute that has shaken relations for more than two weeks.

Wang, the highest Chinese official to speak publicly on the issue, said that Japan is crossing a red line that must not be crossed, according to a statement published on the website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He accused Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of trying to intervene militarily over Taiwan. Wang was referring to her Nov. 7 statement, in which she told a member of parliament that a hypothetical Chinese attack on democratically-ruled Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.

The conflict that followed, the biggest crisis between China and Japan in recent years, spread to trade and cultural relations. On Friday, China raised the issue with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, promising to defend itself.

Beijing considers Taiwan its territory and does not rule out the use of force to take control of the island. Taiwan's democratic government rejects Beijing's claims and says that only the people of the island can decide their future.

In a response to a letter to the United Nations, Japan's foreign ministry on Saturday rejected China's claims as "totally unacceptable" and said Japan's commitment to peace had not changed. Speaking to reporters in South Africa after attending the G20 leaders' summit, Takaichi did not mention Wang's comments or letter on Sunday, saying only that Japan remains open to dialogue with China.

"We are not closing the door. But it is important that Japan clearly says what needs to be said," she said. She added that she did not speak with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, who was also in Johannesburg for a meeting.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the letter sent to the United Nations on Sunday.

"The letter not only contains gross and unreasonable allegations, but also maliciously distorts historical facts. Moreover, it violates Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force in international relations," the announcement states.

Wang said that in response to Japan's moves, "China must resolutely retaliate - not only to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also to defend the hard-won post-war achievements won with blood and sacrifice."

If Japan "persists on its wrong course and continues on this path," all countries and peoples have the right to "reexamine Japan's historical crimes" and to "resolutely prevent the reawakening of Japanese militarism," he said.

China is Japan's largest export market, after the United States, and in 2024 it bought about 125 billion dollars of Japanese goods, mainly industrial equipment, semiconductors and cars, according to UN COMTRADE data.

Hidden beneath the turquoise waters off a part of the US state of Florida known as the "Treasure Coast," a team of divers from a salvage company has discovered a treasure trove - a cargo of long-lost Spanish treasure estimated to be worth a million dollars.

More than 1,000 silver and gold coins believed to have been minted in the Spanish colonies of Bolivia, Mexico and Peru were discovered this summer off the Atlantic coast of Florida, according to 1715 Fleet-Queens Jewels LLC.

Centuries ago, the wealth was being ferried back to Spain when a hurricane destroyed the fleet's ships on July 31, 1715, spilling the treasure into the sea, according to the 1715 Fleet Society.

Dates and mint marks are still visible on some of the recovered coins, the salvage company said, a boon for historians and collectors hoping to learn more about the lost treasure.

"Each coin is a piece of history, a tangible link to the people who lived, worked and sailed during the golden age of the Spanish Empire. Finding 1,000 of them at once is both rare and extraordinary," the company said.

Under Florida law, any "treasure" or other historical artifacts "abandoned" on state land or in state waters belong to the state.

The law requires the state to retain approximately 20 percent of archaeological material found for research collections or public display.

Dutch authorities today issued a warning to visitors to avoid a wooded area in the central part of the country after a child was bitten by a wolf.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning near Austerlitz, but the child was not injured, and a similar case happened 10 days earlier when a wolf bit a girl in the same area on a school trip, the Guardian reports.

In early July, a woman reported to authorities that her poodle had been killed by a wolf in the area, and police believe the same animal was involved in the incidents.

The province of Utrecht has urged visitors not to visit the forest with small children and to be vigilant because of the animal's "atypical and disturbing" behavior.

Utrecht is preparing a license to shoot this wolf and instructions have been published on what to do in the event of an encounter.

Wolves were spotted in the Netherlands in 2015 for the first time in 150 years, and until now they had mostly avoided humans.

Spanish man stentenced to 18 years in prison: Sent explosive devices to state officials

The supreme court of Spain sentenced Pompeo Gonzalez Pasquale (74), who in 2022 sent parcels with explosives to state institutions and embassies, to 18 years in prison.

The court found the former civil servant guilty and sentenced him to 10 years in prison for terrorism and another 8 years for manufacturing explosive devices for terrorist purposes, it has been reported.

In late 2022, González Pasquale was found to have sent six packages of improvised explosive devices to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Defense Minister Margarita Robles, as well as the Ukrainian and US embassies in Madrid, an air base and a weapons manufacturing company.

During the explosion of one of the packages, an employee of the security service of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission was injured, however, most of the dangerous shipments were neutralized.

Gonzalez Pasquale was arrested in January 2023, and in April a judge released him on bail, citing the defendant's age and lack of criminal record.

- González Pasquale acted with the aim of causing a major disruption in Spanish society in order to put pressure on the governments of Spain and the United States of America, other institutions in Spain, to stop supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia, according to the court decision.

The UN requested four billion dollars to help the population of Yemen

The United Nations and its partners have launched an appeal to raise $4 billion to fund aid needed this year for 18.2 million people in Yemen, a country devastated by nearly a decade of conflict.

In a statement, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Ocha, stated that $2.7 billion is needed for vital aid and $1.3 billion for sustainable development to support the millions of people in that country at war.

"In view of the critical needs, 219 humanitarian partners are calling for urgent assistance for more than 18.2 million women, girls, boys and men," the statement said.

The war in Yemen that began in 2014 between Iran-backed rebels and the Saudi-backed government has caused one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters.

According to non-governmental organizations, hundreds of thousands of people died in the war and millions were forced to flee from the fighting zones. More than three quarters of the population depends on international aid and millions of people are on the verge of starvation.

Yemen, which is the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula, has been going through a fragile peace since the cease-fire that was reached with the mediation of the UN in April 2022 is in force. The truce expired in October last year, but it is still generally respected.

The UN estimated today that 17.6 million people will face extreme food insecurity in 2024 in a country where malnutrition rates are among the highest ever recorded.
