Q: Is Dry Shampoo For Black Hair?

A: There are many different kinds of dry shampoos on the market that use different methods of cleaning hair. It can come in the form of powder or liquid no-rinse shampoo.
Dry shampoo is not a replacement for shampooing your hair. There are no cleansing properties in it. It is just an oil absorber.
Who this product best works for are non ethnic women who shampoo their hair frequently( 2-3 times a week). Because of the oil absorbing properties in the dry shampoo, they are able to prolong shampooing by a few days. It is not considered a long-term solution to hygiene because it doesn’t rid the hair of foreign particles.
When used on ethnic hair it tends to leave a dusty residue and make the hair too dry. Most times ethnic women shampoo their hair once a week or sometimes even once every two weeks! unlike their non ethnic counter parts. In this case I would opt for the real deal(wash that mess!).
There are some instances when I used dry shampoo on weaves at photo shoots to remove oil from the models hair. It did remove some of the oil, but it did leave back a dusty film. This is how I used the product; I parted out small sections and applied it to the hair before blow dry styling with a round brush. Even though the dry shampoo did somewhat help, I still was not pleased with the overall results.
So in conclusion I was asked if dry shampoo is good for black hair? Hmmmmm… let me think about it…NO!

A: Unfortunately with some hair types depending on the texture, extreme heat may permanently alter a persons natural curl pattern. This doesn’t mean that the hair is damaged necessarily. Most of the time the effects(loss of curl pattern) are not reversible. She may have to braid it or twist it while wet(a form of setting the hair) and let it air dry or sit under a heated dryer. Once dried she can loose the braids and this helps to blend the straight hair with the natural texture.

It seemed all the stars were aligned in my favor that week. I started by researching online to see if I could find a cutting class near to me and also to find out class schedules. I had this sense of urgency to get it done right away. I couldn’t wait a second longer. To my surprise, the next cutting class was a week away in Los Angeles, CA. My immediate concerns were, how much would airfare be? How will I pay for it? What will I do with my clients on such short notice? Is there space for me in the class? Where will I stay? Watch how God worked it all out for me. First, I jokingly mentioned hookups to the client that was sitting in my chair (this client just happens to work for a major air carrier). She said that she had a couple of buddy passes to spare, meaning that I could fly round trip to LA for a fraction of the actual cost. Secondly, my assistant Natasha called the school to see if they had available space, and they did. Thirdly, Natasha kindly rescheduled a weeks worth of clients without a glitch. Fourthly, my cousin noticed that I was looking for a crash pad in LA due to a comment I made on Facebook and asked what was going on. It turns out that his girlfriend works for a famous hotel chain; therefore, offering me her employee discount which was a third of the actual price per night. Lastly, thank God for Great Parents! Let’s just say they invested in their future.
So there we were (Me and hubby) on our way to the City of Angels! Or so we thought! We didn’t realize that we were flying standby on a holiday weekend. That put a whole new spin on things. All I can say is thank God we lived locally. It took two days and six full flights for us to finally get on board. But, we didn’t give up. Once we got on board it was smooth sailing thereafter. I did end up missing the first day of class, which I later caught up by asking questions and copying notes from fellow classmates.
The City of Los Angeles was a little different than I expected. Everything is so spread apart. Cutting down on cost, we did not rent a car. So in the defense of LA we didn’t receive the full experience. It’s so different in New York, everything is a hop, skip and jump away. We did try venturing off by bus, but it was a disaster!
The trip and the class were more than I could ever ask for. I was refreshed on the fundamentals of haircutting, brushed up on hair cutting terminology, regained my confidence and met some new friends.

ABC Cutting Class

Re-establishing my confidence was the most important factor in this equation. It was great to find out that I wasn’t as bad as I thought. I was able to hear positive affirmations and also see other hairstylist there learning the same thing. There is definitely a science to cutting hair. That paired with a passion and a vision for each client individually will be nothing less than a masterpiece!
Overall I am one step closer to mastering my craft!

Q: How can I maintain the sheen and shine I have on my hair leaving my house when I get to work? After commuting to the city, my hair is frizzy and starts doing its own thing and is quite annoying. Is there a product quick fix?…help Stacey!

A: Your hair gets frizzy because it’s thirsty and dry it is always searching for moisture so on rainy and humid days your hair sucks the moisture from the air making it look and feel frizzy

Solution #1
Start using anti humectants

What is an Anti-humectant?

An ingredient may be called an anti-humectant if it fulfills several requirements. First, it must not be hygroscopic, meaning it must not possess molecular traits that cause it to attract water molecules to itself. Second, it must be water repellent, which necessarily means insoluble in water. This property allows it to lock out or prevent the intrusion of moisture into the hair from a humid environment. In many formulations, the ingredients used for this anti-humectant task are silicones.

solution #2
Take advantage of the cooler weather by stocking up on fashionable and trendy hats. You can keep your hair wrapped until you get to work on rainy, humid or foggy days and brush down your fabulous tresses on arrival. Everyone will wonder why your hair looks so fabulous while the weather is sucky! ( our little secret!)

A: sometimes dry hair and coarse hair can be one in the same because coarse hair is often dry. However, coarseness usually describes hair’s texture ie. fine, medium and coarse and dryness describes the hair’s lack of moisture. Coarseness can also be described as a feeling of roughness along the hair shaft. Which is probably what you’re experiencing with your dry hair. If your coarseness is due to your hair being dry, that can be remedied by adding moisturizing products. Someone can have normal or fine strands and have dry hair.
Thanks for asking…I hope this helps

A: Well it all depends on what you will be using the combs and brushes for. For example if you are looking for brushes for wrapping your hair, I would suggest you use what I use on myself and on my clients.

Do you ever feel like you’re just not good enough? Well, you might just have a point! We know ourselves better than anyone else, and those insecurities don’t just come out of the blue sky. People quickly try to convince us not to worry about taking the next step. They tell us things like, “You’re young,” “you have time,” or “you’re fine,” and “what are you worried about.” Nine out of ten times your instincts are right. What are you going to do about that?

Don’t give up just yet! Turn your weakness into strengths. It’s important that you do what it takes to become a master of your personal craft. Improve your situation by increasing your knowledge in your point of interest. Notice I said POINT of interest. Try to focus one skill or passion at a time to perfect or you’ll be a Jack of all trades and Master of none. If you’re a Pianist find out what style of music you play best and naturally.

You’ll have to practice and do exercises to sharpen your ears. If you’re a Doctor, concentrate on your specialty. You’ll have to read reference books and also attend seminars introducing latest technologies. If you’re a cook think about your favorite cuisines you like to cook best, also what have people showed interest in. You’ll have to eat at restaurants and also take advanced cooking classes to perfect your taste. Lastly and not limited to these career choices, if you’re a hairstylists you’ll have to figure out what kind of hairstyles you already do well. What’s your specialty? Look at fashion magazines, attend trade shows, and take advanced classes to sharpen your skills. I bet you get the gist of what I’m trying to say by now.

It’s not good enough to complain about not being good enough or not accepting a job for fear of your inadequacies. Get out of your funk and get up and do something about it. Life is about choices! If you’re not happy with your situation, make the choice to change it! I’ve decided that after several years of doing hair in various facets of the industry, I am going to it back to my first love affair. CUTTING hair! I’ve already started to look into advanced classes at world-renowned educational facilities. I’m utilizing free resources like YouTube, hair magazines, and talking with industry professionals. I now feel a sense of freedom knowing that I have more to contribute to my success. I will become a Master of my craft!

Please Join me on my journey to buckle down and Master my craft!

I’ve always been the type of girl who didn’t fear the weather or a good workout…. well at least where my hair was concerned. Growing up I had friends who when the forecast called for rain, mist, fog or any suggestion of humidity higher than 22% would begin to mentally formulate their school outfits around whatever hat or head scarf they had to match. Sweating out one’s hairstyle was considered impertinent…. hardly civilized. Winsome ‘ole me cavalierly unwrapped my hair sans trepidation and kept it moving. Rain today…. no problem, off to the gym…no sweat. Somewhere along the line a friend or two pointed out to me that I was somehow born blessed with a built in rain (not torrential) and humidity repellant on my hair. Ok well maybe I wasn’t born that way but with a little “relaxed” aid no force of nature could spark a frizz or a fly away. With my extensions I never worried about the texture of my own exposed tresses contrasting with the texture of the weave. Kinky roots only sprouted when a touch up was due. Bad hair days were few and far between and hair life was essentially grand as far as I was concerned. I guess I could be considered an ultra girly superhero of sorts.

Things got quite a bit more interesting when I made the bold decision to cut my hair into a dramatically short style. Cutting my hair transformed me in more ways than I can number. The changes were overwhelmingly positive despite the expected initial shock. However, I was also left vulnerable as the lack of hair on my head proved to have a kryptonite like effect on my once impenetrable locks. After my first trip to the gym I felt like Samson. My hair did the unthinkable. It went flat and frizzed. I will admit to being the sort of woman who likes to look cute in the gym (no scarves, attractive workout gear a must, etc.). So I endeavored in cardio with my hair uncovered and got the shock of my life when I strutted past a gym floor mirror. Only then did it become apparent that I was invincible no more. It seems the rules change when the haircut changes and unbeknownst to me adjustments had to be made in accordance in this variance. Last week I got to put the adjustments to the ultimate test as it rained heavily. In testy weather I was simply a lot more cautious and observant of the amount of time that I spent outdoors and in defense of my hair, I must say it held up pretty well. In the gym I did what I have never done before in daylight…I whipped out my silk scarf and I was still cute. I underwent a Hot Pilates class, as in PILATES IN A120-DREGREE ROOM. Outfitted in a scarf that nicely matched my yoga pants and mat, I was instantly reminded of my friends and their hair struggles way back when. After my workout I removed my scarf revealing perfectly maintained hair proving that one is never too old to learn something new. They say necessity is the master of invention and I giddily felt like I just discovered a brand new technique simply by wrapping up my hair. “Obviously”…”Duh”…. I know, but for some reason I felt like doing this would have an adverse effect, like humidity would affect my hair more under the scarf. Often times with change, utter confusion and dismay occur even when the solution seems overwhelmingly clear. This is why we call our friends and talk about our hair issues and new hair techniques for hours on end….trying to reinvent the wheel. I learned in that process that change happens and there is no reason to rework your routine and go crazy. So many of us would instantly go into deep regret over the haircut or quit the gym altogether if it means dealing with hair issues. At the end of the day sometimes a maneuver as simple as tying a scarf can make such a difference. Perhaps the solution could be simply putting to use a new product or changing the direction in which you wrap your hair. Don’t feel that just because you’ve always done something a certain way or because your hair has always reacted a certain way that this will always be the case. Graciously, I accept my lessons, admit my ignorance and reminisce with empathy, like any true ultra girly superhero would.

A: In my opinion Relaxing and Texturizing Afro hair is the same. Texturizing/Relaxing the hair loosens the hair’s natural curl pattern. The results depend on how long you leave the relaxer on the hair. Many people think that texturizers make the curly. This is only true if you have a naturally curly curl pattern. If your hair is naturally a tight spiral, once loosened it will have an “S” pattern. In some cases people use a texturizing cream that is Amonimum Thioglycolate based and this is different from a sodium hydroxide relaxer. However, the effect is the same, loosening of the hairs natural curl pattern. Keep in mind that Relaxers and Texturing creams are NOT interchangeable!
Please refer to the chart below for curl pattern comparisons
