Slowly but surely, the Philippines is unfolding its take on contemporary art. In the visual arts painting has taken center field in the past century. One facet of the modern period in the arts however that should not go unnoticed is Performance Art, often referred to as the performing arts. Going through a brief definition between the two, the performing arts has always been scripted and meticulously rehearsed, while performance art doesn’t necessarily have to have a script. The essence of spontaneity is present in this type but even so there is a process involved between the artist and the performance. Although documentation is necessary in preserving the performance due to its spontaneity only a significant amount has been recorded with technology becoming only more accessible at the turn of the 21st century. Most performance art works are imbedded in our minds, and lives on as a memory.

The Performance Art Initiative is a project by the Benilde Arts and Culture Cluster (BACC) of De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde. The platform was established to help fund future performances within the college. Performance art may not ring a loud bell in the Philippines, but spearheading this platform aims to raise awareness about the medium and the brilliant, creative minds of Filipino performance artists, who introduce us to a fresh perspective in making art. A Facebook page was launched by the production team that provides information about current and upcoming projects with industry professionals. The page also provides information about the Spark Up Project encouraging the public to donate and fund the Performance Art Initiative, the first ever crowdfunding effort for the genre in the country.

Students in the media arts at the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde’s School of Design and Arts are currently developing a pilot project with film veteran, Ronnie Lazaro. On Saturday, July 21, 2018, 6:00PM they will present at the SDA Black Box a new performance art work by the artist entitled “Breathless”. Immersed in the early days of his career in performance art, Lazaro opens a curtain onto a lesser known side of his artistry. He will join in a live discussion this Saturday, June 30 at Radyo Natin hosted by Marian Pastor Roces and Arvin Alivia to speak about Breathless along with Arts Management professor, Sandra Palomar-Quan who will speak about the initiative.

I’m planning to watch les mis next year here in Manila. And that would be the first theater performance I’m going to watch (I’m new in this art). Dulaang UP’s first offering for its 39th Season, William Shakespeare’s Measure For Measure/Hakbang Sa Hakbang, will have auditions on April 8-9 for Filipino and April 11-12 for English, 6:00-8:00 pm at the Teatro Hermogenes Ylagan, Faculty Center, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

So I saw a couple of asks from people who had stagedoored for wicked and i’m just a bit confused by them? some said that going after the matinee’s the best but some asks also stated actors usually never come out after a matinee show :( just going to clarify- hoping to have my first ever stagedoor experience tomorrow! DUP’s Ang Nawalang Kapatid Stages Additional Shows on March 14, 15, and 16

Coming off a hugely successful and critically acclaimed three-week run, Dulaang UP’s Ang Nawalang Kapatid stages additional shows on March 14, 15, and 16.

If you missed or would like to relive the Filipino retelling of one of the world’s oldest and longest epic poems, The Mahabharata, then this is your chance to watch the production praised by critics for its direction, text, music, and choreography. Critics laud the production as “an astonishing theatrical experience”, “an elegant and regal Filipino adaptation”, and Dexter M. Santos’ direction as “breathless and daring”.

The story revolves around the battling royal families of the Pandavas and Kauravas, and the moral dilemma Karna, the lost brother, finds himself in. To whom does he owe his loyalty? To his family or to the state which made him a prince?

Through this production, Dulaang UP seeks to bring the timeless story of The Mahabharata to a wider audience. By filtering the epic through the sensibilities of Filipino artists, the production shows us our Indian roots and its enduring impact on our culture. The production highlights how the epic has shaped strong values like loyalty to family which is so much a part of Southeast Asian culture.

Originally staged as a children’s play, this fiercer, bigger, and more complex staging of acclaimed playwright Floy Quintos’ adaptation of the Indian epic is under the direction and choreography of Santos, with original music by Ceejay Javier.

The formidable artistic staff is completed by Gino Gonzales, John Batalla, and Ohm David who designs the costumes, lights, and set respectively; Krina Cayabyab for vocal direction with musical arrangement by Louise Ybañez; additional choreography by Al Garcia, Jeffrey Hernandez, Stephen Viñas, and Vincent Pajara; technical direction by Meliton Roxas Jr. and Ohm David; dramaturgy by Teetin Villanueva and Jeffrey Hernandez; and poster design and photography by Dino Dimar.

On The Menu: Red Turnip Theater’s COCK

What happens when a young gay man falls in love with a woman?

That’s the central conceit behind Red Turnip Theater’s second offering, COCK by Mike Bartlett. A sold-out hit when it first premiered in London in 2009 and subsequently during its off-Broadway run a year later, COCK revolves around a gay couple whose rocky relationship derails when one of them sleeps (and falls in love) with a woman. Debates over one’s sexual identity explode when all three decide to sit down and “duke it out” over dinner. Hilarity ensues when another unexpected guest turns up and loyalties are put to the test. As one character puts it, “It’s the ultimate bitch fight”.

The New York Times calls COCK “a terrific, tense little comedy” while The Huffington Post hails it as “a terrific contemporary play that puts much of other theatre to shame”. This critical darling is the perfect bookend to Red Turnip’s maiden season.

Fresh off the success of their critically-acclaimed CLOSER last October at Whitespace, Red Turnip promises another unique, in your face theatrical experience with COCK. The vision of five established actors (Ana Abad Santos, Topper Fabregas, Jenny Jamora, Cris Villonco and Rem Zamora), Red Turnip aims to engage theatergoers with the sort of material that seems to be in short supply in the country—the straight play.

Rem Zamora makes his directorial debut with COCK.“We’re excited to be back in Whitespace. A lot of people who came to CLOSER said they enjoyed the intimacy of the experience and the space. That was in Hall B. We’re going even more intimate this time in the smaller Hall A. COCK also plays in the round so it feels like you’re watching a fight in an arena—no frills: just words and pure conflict in the ring, and an intense involvement in the audience.”

Zamora has assembled a tight cast of theatrical heavyweights for COCK’s Manila premier: Topper Fabregas (Boeing Boeing, The Producers), Niccolo Manahan (Next Fall, Doubt), Jenny Jamora (Mind’s Eye, A Little Night Music), Audie Gemora (Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables)

Fabregas is John, a young man caught between his gay lover and his growing attraction to another woman- W, played by Jamora.

Niccolo Manahan makes a theatrical comeback as M, John’s lover who isn’t about to let him go without a fight. “I feel ‘Cock’ will be a great experiment for me; an experiment in balancing my life with the things I enjoy doing, and an experiment in pushing my range. I don’t know where this ex-periment will lead but its an incredible opportunity that I’m thankful for.”

Rounding off this impressive cast is theatre stalwart Audie Gemora as F, M’s well-meaning father whose sudden appearance at dinner throws everyone for a loop. “The birth of a theater group is always exciting and eventful with fresh artistic vision and passion. I am thrilled to be part of Red Turnips 2nd offering, ‘Cock’. This is Rem Zamora’s directorial debut and my first time to be acting opposite brilliant young actors Niccolo Manahan and Jenny Jamora, while Topper Fabregas takes on his most complex character yet. On The Menu: UP Repertory Company's Damas de Noche: Isang Musikal

UP REP first staged Joi Barrios’ DAMAS DE NOCHE in 2001 in a production called “Alimuom”. In 2006, it was restaged by the company but was given a more colorful and lively interpretation - it was made into a musical. With the libretto written by Romulo Baquiran Jr., a famous writer and professor (who was also a member of UP Rep), a colorful twist was given to the stories of four women during the Spanish-American War: Leonarda, a helper accused as a mujerzuela, who wishes to be with her rebel lover once again; Juanita, a young mother who wishes to be a star of the zarzuelas; Maria, a worker at a tobacco factory who goes to the city in hopes of getting riches; and Clara, a woman silenced by a sickness she acquired after getting raped by 14 men. Their stories are narrated by Magdalena, the famous Biblical character, here performing the role of “whore for all seasons”.

The four women all wait in vain for the end of their oppression and longing. Their stories reflect the true situation of their motherland Philippines, and how it was raped by different colonizers investing on its body of bountiful resources through the centuries. The musical is about the conditions of women in a society that measures their value according to their bodies, and how they will manage to escape these chains.

As a continuing celebration of its 41st anniversary and as a contribution to the ongoing struggle for equal rights, The UP Repertory Company proudly presents DAMAS DE NOCHE, a striking musical about Filipino women. Directed by UP Rep residents Bryle Leaño and Gio Potes with musical direction by Gian Odeste and choreography by Jomelle Era, this re-staging of the songs and the dances combined with the different stories of women during the turn of the century, DAMAS DE NOCHE once again reflects violence and oppression against women in contemporary society. This is a musical against this oppression, a musical production that reflects the joys and the sorrows of being a Filipina in the colonization of the Spaniards and the Americans.

On The Menu: Harlequin Theatre Guild’s Fish-Hair Woman

A cradle of corpses—a river filled with soldiers and armed forces—lies in the heart of Iraya. The “Fish-Hair Woman” floats on, consoling mourning families by retrieving bodies of their loved ones with her twelve-meter hair. Will these families find justice? Will the “Fish-Hair Woman” redeem her beloved Iraya and her heart’s peace?

De La Salle University’s premiere theatre organization, the Harlequin Theatre Guild, concludes its 47th season with “Fish-Hair Woman.” It is a musical based on the acclaimed novel by Merlinda Bobis and adapted for the stage by renowned writer, Rody Vera. Directed by ALIW award nominee and the guild’s Artistic Director and Trainer, Romualdo Tejada of PETA, the production will put you in war-stricken Iraya. “Fish-Hair Woman” unfolds the story of Stella in the midst of the conflict through music composed by Dodjie Fernandez. The production features its intimate set-up with the theatre-in-the-round format, designed by Joseph Duran. Katsch Katoy’s design lights up set despite the dark stories of its characters.

Advice to those who will go to stage door for Wicked: It’s definitely the best to go to stage door after a matinee show. You all will surely meet the main cast, especially Suzie (Glinda) and Ali (stand by Elphie). But if you want to meet Jemma (Elphie), go to stage door after the evening show. And, RUN FAST! ;)
