So, what makes you think you're an author?

You sit there with a cup of coffee, staring at a blank page. Just like me, you hear these phrases often. "You should write more. Your words are good." Yet, like many, you never take the time.

Sure, you take a few steps in the right direction. But then you go off the rails and watch movies for five hours. You get started. But something stalls your progress.

Me too.

For example, you have a list of 'Firestarters' for titles. They are scattered through OneNote, Loop, Keep, and more. And they are covered in digital dust.

But you're not alone.

The truth is, I live this struggle. I know what it feels like to neglect one's talent. Heck, some might even say it's a calling. If you've read this far, so do you. Many of us are searching for the push—the 'thing' that sets us into motion. Whether it's writing, painting, or juggling flaming torches, we all search for motivation.

Here’s what I’ve decided. Whatever you feel you should be doing, just do it. Nike’s not wrong. Whether it's penning a sonnet or crafting a masterpiece, don't worry. If others don't get it or even like it, so what? This is what fuels life, the reason we breathe. It's the very marrow of our existence.

Remember, even if no one else encourages you, it doesn't matter. Be your own cheerleader. Don't die with your music in you. I'm 70, so my writing time is shorter than most.

So, today, I'm doing something different.

I'm moving forward.

I'm writing these words.

They might not be perfect.

They might not win awards.

But by God, they're mine.

And maybe they'll help you write yours too. I hope so.

Because the truth is, we're all just one sentence away from being writers.

One brush stroke from being painters.

One note from being musicians.

If you're waiting on me, you're backing up.

This blog isn't just for you; it's for me, too. It's a reminder that now is the time. If not now, when?

Contact Stan Bush

It's a little over a month before I 'officially' retire. I've had a lot of experiences. I've accomplished a lot. I've also lost my fair share. Honestly, my losses were caused by Lack of Focus. My successes were a result of good focus. Like many, I am obsessive compulsive with attention deficit tendencies. It's been a struggle overcoming this. I had to devise methods to help me. The S.T.A.N. Plan is one of them. It's also where everything starts

The S.T.A.N. Plan

Basically, I took my name, Stan to create a process. Before I start a project, I apply the S.T.A.N. Plan to it. That means, it must be:

Simple - easy to understand

Trackable - can I measure it's results.

Achievable - is it something I can actually DO?

Necessary - what are the rewards, or consequences of the project.

That's the start. All answers to the above must be "Yes". If they are, I feel like it has a shot at success. My next step is "The D Planner". I'll explain that in another post. Why? Because I'm following my "Area 51" method. I'll explain that in another post as well.

That's probably not what you were expecting. You probably thought I would say everything online is in the toilet. Although I might feel like that sometimes, it's not really true. There are some very bright spots on Social Media. And plenty of fantastic people on each platform... BUT.....

There's Also Plenty Of Really Awful Things Too

Twitter especially. There are too many fake, anonymous, and/or cloned accounts. Spend 10 minutes there and you'll see. Pretty much, you're sure to find this standard thread pattern:

FlowerGirl: "I think Hydrangeas are beautiful."

Soil_man: "They are. Did you know there color can be controlled by fertilizer."

FlowerGirl: "I knew that. It has something to do with nitrogen doesn't it?"

Soil_man: "Sorta...but it has to do with the PH Level."

TheBlackPatriot: "Blue Lives Matter. White Hydrangeas hate blue ones. They should be dug up and destroyed."

Out of nowhere, the conversation goes off the rails. And by whom? No way to find out. Twitter sucks very badly. There's really no control over fake accounts. What should you do when this happens? Well, here's what I do... Take a look at the users profile...

Do they have very few followers?

This isn't always a good measure, as some real people don't care about followers.

Do all of their posts have the same combative tone?

Take a look at their stream. Is it full of arguments? Just block 'em.

Do they have a username like "@LordSplatAlot" or some other nonsense?

Most of the time fake accounts have some sort of username that they think is cute. Normally it's just offensive. Just block 'em.

But It's Not Just Twitter

It's literally every social media platform. There is very little real effort in verification. If anything, fake accounts are encouraged. Why? Because the platforms can brag about how many users they have. And they use those numbers to sell more advertising. At a higher price. So for them... fake accounts are like passive income. They don't do anything for it, but the money rolls in.

For Example:

Someone spoofed my mother in law. I reported it to Facebook. And what was their response?

"This doesn't go against our community guidelines."

I bet if it was THEM or THEIR family members it would be against the guidelines.

If there were a way to find out who gave that response, it would be an easy fix. Show up at their house with a baseball bat.

What Can You Do About It?

Other than getting off the platform...nothing. You could start your own network. Or you can look for a specialized network. One that caters to your interests. There are plenty of them out there. Just click this link and pick one of the directories. Social Media Site Directory Search

Or You Can Ignore The Bad Eggs

I can't tell you that will solve the social issue. But I can tell you that you'll be happier. You won't spend time trying to change the mind of Captain Anonymous. And that in itself is a win. Because if you ever engage, you'l regret it. Those people are just there to disrupt. They are Pro everything and Anti everything. They'll take whatever position they need to be argumentative. It's just not worth it.

And even when they are real people, it doesn't work. The anonymity of the internet gives them courage. You'll never convince them that abortion is wrong, gender confusion is a myth and excuse, and black lives have always mattered. If you want to talk about DNA, then yes... I understand your position. But otherwise, science says you're wrong.

And btw, I won't argue this in a thread. I'll be glad to go live and discuss it. But I'm not even going to reply to anonymous Joe, who just wants to agrue.

So... Don't Fall In

Find your circle. Engage with them. And most all... don't confuse Social Media for the real world. In the real world, you can speak directly to the aggressors. Online, they are just anonymous chicken shits trying to trigger you.

And for the record, if there are any comments... most likely they will prove my position.

Peace, Love, and Understanding...

I'll see ya'll down the road.

Everyone was wondering where their flying cars were. Except me. I had already physically seen Moulton Taylor's Aerocar. They were here. Nobody was buying. I should have taken that as a sign.

I should have taken that as a sign

I had been running online 'bulletin boards' for a few years. Prodigy, Mindspring, Compuserve and Delphi were losing ground to AOL. Probably because of the number of CD's they were sending. Nobody really cared about the online stuff, especially in Middle Georgia.

Out of the blue I got a call from the owner of a radio station. It was literally the lowest rated station in the area. The format was "New Adult Contemporary"(NAC). Sometimes referred to as "Smooth Jazz". This meant a bunch of Kenny G., Toni Braxton, and Dave Koz was being played to an audience that was more attuned to The Allman Brothers and Lynrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson and George Jones, or Otis Redding and Gladys Knight. He was losing 30K a month. They needed a manager. I told him I'd never been in the radio business. He told me the person that recommended me had told him "He's the only guy I know that can fix this."

That's how I got a job in the Radio Business, was mentioned in Arbitron in less than 6 months, and that's how I wound up working online for the rest of my career.

Just in case you don't know, getting listed in the Arbitron was a big thing. The jackass music director was in the business for 18 years, and had never accomplished that.

That year, the Internet sort of became "a thing".

Nobody else in the area had picked up on it. In fact they all wrote it off as a 'fad'. Since I had some online experience, I knew they were wrong. But the buzz was there. And that's what marketing is all about. Everyone had heard that the "World Wide Web" had a bunch of Websites. But they didn't know what that meant. Since none of the other media outlets were doing anything online, I decided I would use it to pull the station from the brink of bankruptcy.

Value Added

I decided to give away 'websites' as 'value added' addons when someone signed up for our top shelf advertising package. We began to make some traction, although people didn't know what they were buying. But we still weren't profitable. Nobody in Middle Georgia was actually listening to us.

So I decided to tweak the format.

I thought about the phrases "Rock and Roll" and "Country and Western". I decided to drop the "Rhythm" association and use the phrase 'Jazz and Blues" instead. I began mixing Miles Davis and Mingus in with Little Wing and Little Martha. That change resulted in the first profit for the station in over 5 years. The station was sold, and I waited for the offers to come in to run other stations. That never happened.

What happened instead is the new owners switched it right back to NAC and dropped anything to do with the blues.

What happened to the Station?.. Well..they closed in less than a year.

Go figure.

Me. I Spent The Next 30+ Years On The Web

Doing stuff. Lots of it. For other people. People that did some good. People that did some bad. When I look back at it, I don't really have any regrets. Maybe it was a financial disaster, after all I never figured out how to monetize anything much. At least not for me. I was successful in helping others, but not so much myself. I suppose if I'd have had a business manager as a partner we'd have done fine. I tried that once. It didn't end well.

But it did end.

That's it for this post. There's a lot of stuff I could tell you about... but that's for another day.

Peace, Love, and Understanding...

Stan Bush

.

Fess Up!

Don't you wonder sometimes? How does that social media 'expert' do it? They share 100 or more posts a day. They tell you how the info in it is really 'valuable'. They tell you that this is the advice that's going to change your life. According to them, you need to stop what you're doing and read this immediately. It's that important.

Hogwash!
Here's Why I Say That

They probably didn't read it themselves. How could they? If each article takes 5 minutes to read, and they share 100 of them...that's 500 minutes a day. So they would be spending 8 hours a day just reading the post. For me, that doesn't leave enough time to get my owns stuff done.

How And Why Are They Doing It

They're using an automated sharing application. What it does is 'looks' for posts by certain authors. When it finds something, it automatically shares it. That way the article gets seen more, because it's in more places. The term that describes that is 'amplification'. Which is basically a way to make the search engines think it's more 'relative' in it's subject matter.

I'm Not Saying That's A Bad Thing

I'm just saying I don't practice that myself. At least not for other people's posts. I do use that concept for my own stuff. It saves me time from 'reposting' or 'sharing' to my other social media sites. For example, this post will automatically post to my Facebook page. That's different than automatically sharing a post from someone I don't really know. Especially if I never read them. A lot can go wrong by auto sharing.

Here's An Example Of What Can Go Wrong

Many years ago, I helped a well known blogger create a group. One of the things that he taught was how to 'amplify' your post. The basic concept was that your group automatically shared each others posts. I said openly "I don't think that's a good idea to do without reading them." He disagreed. Getting the post shared was the most important thing.

So I Made A Post Calling Everyone A Jerk

So I decided to post something that called everyone in the group a jerk. And guess what. Yup. They shared a post that called themselves jerks. And when I brought that up in an online meeting, they didn't even know it. Because they hadn't even read it.

That's Why "Sharing Is Caring" Is Bullcrap

Everything doesn't need to be shared. Don't share the things you don't read. Regardless of where they come from. This is why we have so much misinformation on the web now. Somebody sees a headline they agree with or like, and they just share it. All it takes is a few minutes to read it. Fact check the claims in the post, if there are any. It doesn't take that long.

Now that you've read this... feel free to share :-)

I've spent a lot of time, learning a lot of stuff. I guess I'm supposed to say "Some of the stuff I used, and some I didn't". But that wouldn't be true. Just like you, I use everything I've ever learned, every chance I get. A truer statement would be that I never get a chance to use it. An even truer statement is that I never take the opportunity to use it. Instead, I've spend a lot of time watching other people use what they've learned. I don't know what the real percentage is, but I'd say it's way too much.
And that's why I made this video.
It's called the 20% Prayer. And the whole purpose of it is to help me focus on the 20% of those things that matter. That's means dropping 80% of the things that I've spent my time on in the past.
And that's why they call it a prayer.
And you're welcome to pray it to if you'd like.

Back In The Day...

there was a blog writing class. The guy that made the money is a guy named Chris Brogan. He was the guy that espoused all his internet wisdom. He was the guy that said 'this is how you write." I ran the community. I kept the students informed. I tagged Chris or emailed Chris on important stuff. He called it "Blog Topics Master Class". Some valuable things were collaborated on.

So One Of The Things We Practiced...

was how to create titles. Catchy titles. Titles that would spark interest. Or more succinctly, titles that would get clicks. Eventually, they would morph into Click Bait, but we never got into that. We wanted the same thing then that you want now. You want to click on a title and get what you came for. Truth. A real delivery on the promise.

So Let's Get To It

Not running out of blog topics is really not that difficult. It's keeping them easily accessible that's the trick. And the key to that is writing them down. Whether that's in a digital, audio, or written format doesn't matter. It's just the act of getting your thoughts down that matter. I've personally used Google Keep, OneNote, Remember The Milk, Evernote, Google Docs, Awesome Note, and a slew of others. All of them do the same thing. They don't let you forget the idea for the most eye opening post ever.

It Can't Be That Easy

Well, it's not. If it were, everyone would be successful with it. There are a few other steps that you must complete. Because remember, your goal is to NEVER RUN OUT OF BLOG TOPICS! To accomplish this, you're going to need to expand your concept. Fortunately, that's not that difficult either. In fact, you can use my 'Area 51' or "Five Fifteen' concepts to accomplish this.

What You Need To Do

Set your timer for 5 or 15 minutes. Then just think about your subject matter. Think about the well known 'Five W's'. For example: Who Uses "the subject"? When do they use 'the subject'? "How, Why, and Where do they use 'the subject?" Turn those thoughts into titles. Make the title as interesting as you can. But don't try to perfect everyone of them. That will happen later, when you actually write the article.

Just be sure to type, dictate, or write the titles down.

Here Is An Example Of Using This Technique

What better way is there to demonstrate this. I will set my timer and simply followed the instructions above. I won't try to to make them all perfect. I'll just type out what comes to mind. And the subject will be about blogging. Here goes

Possible Titles for a Series of Blogs

All Bloggers Face The Same Challenge

Can Writing Content Be Reduced To A Process

What They Mean By Interesting Content

Finding The People Who Think You're Interesting

The Bigger The Ears, The Harder They Call

Connecting Doesn't Start By Invading

Series Two

Who Is Doing Business On Social Networks

What Are They Selling On Social Networks

When Should You Sell On Social Networks

Where Are My Customers On Social Networks

Why People Buy On Social Networks

How Can You Sell On Social Networks

All of those titles were created in a little over 5 minutes. I may or may not use them. The same will hold true for you. But the truth is, I over delivered on my promise. I now have 12 topics I could write about.

Here's Another Promise

Do the above instructions once a day for a week. At the end of the week, look at your list. I'd bet you have the perfect solution for any Writer's Block you ever get.

And send me those list via email stan@stanbush.net . Maybe we can talk about other stuff we can work through together.

ps.. this title was originally considered on July 20, 2012.

It's being published 8 years later.. July 6, 2020.

That's how the system works. What do you think about it?

Quoting Dylan is sorta cliche. Especially these days when the changes are coming so quickly. However, I don't care. Besides this really is about "If your time to you is worth saving." So without further ado... here's the relevance...

I got up at 3:30AM. Just like I always do. (I do boil the water before I pour it in the pot. That way, they'll be done when we finish our walk.)

Then I leashed up the dog and we did our walk. We did pretty good. We reduced the time for the 2+ miles from 38 minutes to a smidgen over 36 minutes. I'm pretty happy with that.
My oatmeal is ready, so I add my frozen blueberries, a few mixed nuts, and a pinch of salt. I sit down in my 'dad' chair and start my Spark app.

I use the mobile app. I have both Android and Apple versions. There's a little checklist under the "SparkPoints" icon. So I go through that checklist. That should keep me up to date with friends, food, etc. The last step is my own personal checklist. It's very short. It does include writing this blog.

It also includes adding my time to the calendar.
And that's where the S.T.A.N. plan came in handy this morning.

Simple - add it to the calendar
Trackable - yep, that's what the calendar does
Attainable - hmm. I'm beginning to question that.
Necessary - and that's the kicker.

When I do that I see something that needs to change. I spend roughly 45 minutes on exercise. Which puts me ending that at 4:45AM. Here it is 7:15 and I'm not finished with the 'other' part of my 'Fitness Day". That equates to almost three times more time spent talking about fitness, rather than doing it.
In all fairness 30 minutes of that was playing guitar, which I do daily as well. But still...
I'm going to have to work on that. Dilligently.

Apparenlty my timer was broke on this one :-)

Peace, Love, and Understanding...I'll cy'all down the road.

ps...the image is of a friend of mine and his dog :-)

If you don't know this, I spent about 20 years or better in Social Media. I built communities for other people. It was fun, whilst it lasted. Now I work in the financial sector and am more retired than anything. But old habits are hard to break. So I keep up on a lot of Social Media Channels. And here's what I've noticed.
Remote Work Is Incredibly Fullfilling

A lot of people act like remote work, social distancing, quarantine, etc... is too much to bear. Like it's impossible to do. So I put together a few reminders of past experiences to help you get through.

High School. You thought you'd never get through it. You couldn't wait to get a job and join the 'working crowd'. Well... how'd that work out for you? :-)

You listened to "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", the full version, on 8 track, album, and cassette. Not to mention some of the drum solos of the 70's and 80's. You'll get through this too.

Caddyshack 2.. You probably have more than one calendar too. So, here's what I am doing to resolve this.

I'm Consolidating Everything

And I mean everything. I'm sharing, adding, and integrating my calendars everwhere. I'm pulling Google into Outlook, Outlook into Google, and leaving Yahoo where it belongs. In the 'forgotten' bin. And since this isn't about 'how' to do that, I won't delve into it. I'll only give the reasons that I'm doing it.

I Need More Time Doing Things

I spend way too much time...chasing down time. Lost time. And that just means I waste MORE time. Most of it is in my calendar. Or should I say "calendars". Because there are multiple calendars. Across multiple platforms. Not all of them are mine. Some are clients. Or should I say 'were' clients. Since I retired, they no longer pay me. Sure, they still expect me to keep up with when their hosting and domain registration expires. But they figure that's free. Well, as of Jan 1, 2010...they figured wrong. It's just too much to keep up with and expect. Not because there's so much of it. It's because I can't really print it the way I want. Especially when I look at the various platforms.

So I Spent Some Ben Franklin Time On It Today

Ben Franklin had an easy decision maker. All he did was draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper. On one side he wrote the 'pros' of the thing that needed deciding. On the other side he wrote the 'cons'. And then he just put down the pros and cons. Which ever one filled up fastest, that was the one he went with. My Ben Franklin was about printing ONE calendar, in exactly the format I want it in.

Turns Out - Printing Ain't That Easy

At least not in this case. Even when I imported/synced the calendars to each platform... it still didn't print the way I wanted it to. I like taskS list. Google Calendar doesn't print tasks list. Unless you put a date on it. And even if you do, it doesn't look as organized as well as Outlook. So, I was in a quandry. Which is not where I need to be.

So I Made A Decision

I'm just going to put it on my morning list to print BOTH of them. Not forever. But for now. Until I can get everything migrated to ... you know...wherever the heck I'm going to migrate it to. After all, it's going to take me two minutes to do that, rather than continue to download, install, configure, and test all the 'supposed' solutions for this dilemna. Only to find out...they don't work the way I want anyway.

Bring On 2020

I'm ready to get back to getting things done. You remember...before technology saved us all this time!

I Ain't Never Going To Track My Food.

TRACKING FOOD IS HARD

I gotta face it. I ain't never gonna track my food. At least not with any consistency. I'm going to slip, followed by an immediate fall, and the familiar "flinging thyself from thine own wagon". And that's that.

I would give it about 90% of the reason I don't lose weight. I maintain just fine. But losing...nah. That ain't gonna happen. Not if I have to enter all my food into some application somewhere.

Besides the time involved entering it...do you have any idea how long I have to wait for my Instagram loving wife to take a picture of it? You ever tried holding a 'pretend a smile while you're food is getting cold' for two minutes. It's longer than you think.

Anyway....

I was thinking about this yesterday and came up with the real answer. It just ain't me. Sure I can add 'some' stuff. But not all of it. And it's not that there's that much of if. I'm just sort of an adventurer. So when I visit an authentic Cajun restaurant, I gotta order the Creole Fried Frog legs. What's the chance of that being in the listed food? Zero. Trust me. It ain't there.

So what is me? I'm a planner kind of guy. I like to know what the 'next step' is gonna be? Which means I need to take the advice of literally every weight loss program out there. Plan my menu. Prepare it in advance. It's like the bear dance. Two snips, a snort, a fly turn and a grunt. So simple that like the jitterbug it plum evaded me. (from Jimmy Buffet - God's Own Drunk)

So that's what I'll be doing this weekend. Figuring out next week's menu, including any trips to restaurants. I'll use Spark's meal planner... I mean... you know... since it's right there in front of me. If it was a snake it woulda bit me.

ps... pass me the remoulade please :-)

Timer's up.

All my workouts are great. All my food is healthy. And all my friends are awesome.

Peace, Love and Understanding, I'll cya'll down the road.
Every now and then I 'rethink' my position on immigrants. Something floats across the screen that makes me want to read it. That's what happened this week. And here's what my thoughts about it are.

First Of All...

I'm not a big proponent of building a wall. I've been around long enough to know where that leads. I remember crowds cheering as a certain wall fell in Germany. Seems like it was a good idea to go "Wall-less". Yet here we are in 2019 with the same people seeming to WANT one. I don't get it.

What I Would Rather Do...

Is put all that money into people. Not bricks. And by that, I mean health care, education, and the arts. If you think I'm talking about buying guitars, books and food, then you're right. I'd rather listen to a healthy person playing guitar on a full stomach than listen to someone bitch about immigration.

But That's Not Going To Happen...

Division between the 'camps' is too great. There isn't enough people looking for common ground. What they are looking for are comparisons to prove their point.

Which Brings Us To The Point Of This Post

Someone I know and respect tweeted a link to this article: "How Immigrants Helped To Rejuvenate A Struggling Italian Town". Along with the comment "Nuff Said". Based on that, I decided to read the article. After all, this is from a someone I know.

My Reader's Digest Summary

A quick summary:

In 2013 the town took in 15 immigrants. This kept them from being deported.

By April 2019 that number had 'swelled' to 30. That's about 2.5 per year.

You can't compare this to the numbers coming into the US daily. If you don't understand that, then I can't help you. I'm simply not going to spend time explaining that an apple is different than an orange. It's a waste of time, energy, and frankly, insults my intelligence.

However...If You Want To Discuss Solutions...

that don't include mistreatment of human beings, I'm all in. And that includes the mistreatment of American citizens so they can appease an illegal immigrant.

In other words...use the money you're throwing at politicians, pro athletes, doctors, and lawyers to house, educate, provide healthcare and food to people that need it.

Peace, Love and Understanding.

I'll See Ya'll Down The Road.

So I have that done for today. The beginning of the workout is always harder than the end. I'm using the Walk/Run method. I'm doing it on a treadmill. (I don't want to risk twisting an ankle in the dark again...ever') If you don't know about run/walk, search 'The Galloway Method". As far as I know, he is the originator.

Anyway, my current session is:

Warm up briskly, 5 minutes

Run for three

Walk for two

Rinse and repeat 6 times

Cool Down (5 minutes)

For the record, the hardest part isn't getting to the gym. That's easy. The hardest part is the very first 'run' session. Even though I've warmed up, I'm simply not ready. My feet ache a little, my knees are wobbly, and my air is short. I really look forward to the first 'walk' session. After that, the run sessions are much easier. Maybe I need to consider doing some stretching as well. I'm pretty sure I can turn one of my 10 minute breaks into a stretching period.

Terrific Torrid Trestle Tuesday (Burning Bridges)

Well, today has been terrific. It's Tuesday. And I have blazed through it building and burning bridges as I go. I know that sounds a bit negative. Everybody loves building bridges. I like burning and building them though. I know not everyone agrees with me. Usually it's because burning bridges sounds so unagreeable. I think of it differently. I think of it more as being 'final'. Something I'm not going to return to. Or something that can't follow me. It's something I want behind me.

Here's An Example

Let's say you are driving on a deserted road late at nigh. Alone. Suddenly there's a van full of loud people that pull up behind you. They begin to pull up close behind you. They are yelling and waving bats, shooting firecrackers, etc. They look harmless enough. But there is also an air of danger surrounding them.

They have a flat tire and have to pull off to fix it.
Just up the road there is a bridge. You cross the bridge and look back at them. You can see they are almost finished changing their tire.
Wouldn't you burn that bridge if you could? Just so they wouldn't be able to follow you?

Especially if you thought they just 'might' mean to do you harm? And notice I didn't say burn the bridge with them on it. Bridges can be rebuilt at a later time. People can't.

That's the kind of bridge burning I did today. I did not harm, but I think I kept some from coming my way.

Peace, Love, and Understanding.
I'll cya'll down the road.

First of all, I'm jealous of Mike and Jay. They travel. They take pictures. They blog. And they just seem cool in everything I see about them. And I spent some time looking. This review is going to cover more than just their 'free site' at Jay Mantri Dot Com. They have a lot to see and love. Just relax and Go With The Flow

Who's Behind This Site

Mike is a film maker. That part I got. Especially when I visited the YouTube Channel. The video he created for the trailer is well done. Actually, it's excellent. As are all of the videos that I watched. There are so many of them, I don't think you'll watch all of them either. But you'll have a good selection. Because that's their plan. After all, it's called Mike and Jay Explore for a reason. And the description says

I'm Mike, a filmmaker from LA, join my roommate Jay & I on our adventures around the world. Exploring new places, eating weird things and getting outside our comfort zone.

It looks like there are a lot of places they aren't comfortable. But you can't tell it by the quality of the pictures and videos. They look right at home.

OH Yeah. Jay Takes Pictures

I think I got that right. If I do, it explains why they travel together. They have similar interests and probably get inspiration from each others work. And both of them apparently get inspiration from one of our favorite sites .... unsplash.com. And it shows in the navigation, layout, and quality of the images.

What Kind Of Photos Can You Expect

That will be evident from the first page you go to. All of the photographs are just excellent. It may seem redundant, since Jay is a professional photographer, but here goes. They are professional grade photos. For me that means more than just lighting, subject matter and composition. It means they emote a feeling of participation by the viewer. There are several photos where you're going to want to go "Hey Mike. What are you doing in that mirror?" Yes. I know some people will say the photographer's reflection shouldn't be seen. But believe me, when you see him, it will make sense. It will give you a warm and fuzzy.

Are They Really Free?

Yes. Absolutely. 100%. Here's what the site says: free pics.do anything (CC0) make magic.

What's The Site Running On

Well, that's a little more complex. Part of it is on Tumblr, part of it is on MediaTemple aka (Godaddy) <--their affiliate link. And parts are on YouTube. Just for clarity though...Jay Mantri is on Tumblr. Their specific use of the gridserver.com program demonstrates how putting some files on a different server helps load speed though. Good choices and implementation all around.

Where Else Are They?

Lots of places. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat to name a few. Here are their official links from their YouTube Channel
Social -

Mike's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mike_dewey/

Mike's Snapchat: mike_dewey

Jay's Instagram: http://instagram.com/jaymantri

Jay’s Snapchat: amantri

Jay shoots a bunch of rad photos while we are out on adventures & they are all available for free: http://www.jaymantri.com

I also found Jay's Twitter and Jay's Instagram.

I go to my garden several times a day. Usually during 10 minute breaks. That gives me time to water parts of it. It usually takes two breaks to get all of it done. Sometimes three if I water the flowers too. I take pictures of the vegetables and post them. I like it. It makes me feel good about things I do other than work. Its time that I take out for myself.

This Is A Longer Post That I Usually Create

It's the first collaborative blog post that I've made with my wife Cheryl. We've done post together before, but nothing like this. The difference is that she made the pencil drawing I'm using as an image. And I'm using a title that I've had around for a couple of years. We're in negotiations right now. She says if I write more from those titles, she'll draw more. Sometimes when I've worked too much, I've thought about this title. I just never took the time to write it. She's encouraging me to do more of it.

And That Really Is The Whole Point Of The Graphic And Post

In 1930, economist John Keynes predicted we'd only work 15 hours a week. In 2014 the average American worked a 47 hour week. And it doesn't look like it's going down anytime soon. Average work hours reached it's lowest point in 1973. It was somewhere under 38, but I don't remember the exact numbers. And the average income isn't going up. It's staying the same. The ultra rich are getting ultra richer, but guess what? They are working more too. So it's not necessarily a result of being in the working class. It's more about thinking you must, should, or can 'do it all'. Get over it...move on. Take more time for yourself.

So What Is It?

If you know anything about me, you know I buck the system about 95% of the time. This is no different. Most economist say that the reason is because we consider work a sort of 'badge'. When we say we are busy, it adds importance to our lives. As usual, I think that's a bunch of bullshit. The truth is our 'work' is no longer as defined as it was before. There's not much accountability when it comes to output. Many people browse the internet more than half the time they are at 'work'. Yet they count that as work. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying this is a terrible thing. I'm just saying that it IS a thing. 10 years from now the academics will catch up, as they always do...and document this phenomenon. In the meanwhile, I'm going to urge you to take as much time for yourselves as you can. Even if that is browsing the Internet at work. Unless of course you're a 40 hour a week person. Then I would prefer you put that phone down, quit texting, and talk to me when I'm standing in front of you. Taking time for yourself doesn't mean stealing it from others.

These Are Other People Who Take Time Out For Themselves

Jackie Hutchings is a friend of mine that does crossfit. She also takes care of swans. She's a fan of Bruce Springsteen and has traveled to several countries to see him. She posts pictures of those activities quite often. Everybody that knows her knows those things about her. She's having fun.

Kevin Greer is a couple years younger than me. He does triathlons. He also has buddies that he rides, runs and swims with on weekends. He posts pictures of them and you can tell he's having a great time. He gives that time out to himself.

My friend Mia Voss travels all over the country with her show "Mia On The Go". She broadcasts from some really neat places. She eats great food and talks with some fantastic people. You should watch her. I wish I could watch more of her episodes. Every now and then she just puts pictures up of where she's at. Sometimes she doesn't broadcast. She's taking time out for herself.

She's had some great help from Dawn Swick-Renshaw from Stoney Creek Social Media. Dawn is really good at social media. Actually, she's much better than 'really good." She's what you call a 'professional'. She would be a good person to contact for those services. Still...you can tell that she really enjoys taking time out for herself, with her family.

Elaine Nieberding likes to laugh. Everybody knows that. She enjoys laugh yoga. She recently took time out for herself, to go to the healing grounds of Bon Secours Retreat and Conference Center in Marriottsville, MD. She posted a beautiful view from her room. It was nice.

Les Dossey is a man among men. He runs his business and does whatever it takes to get 10X results. I know that he runs a successful business and has a great time doing it. He takes time out for himself when it comes to fitness. And he spends time with his lovely wife Lisa.

Rhonda Pettigrew Morris visited her Aunt Betty recently. She posted a great picture of it. I know she had been in Florida because she also posted a picture of her and Tony at Nervous Nellies. She will never be sorry for the time she spent there.

Kittie Walker is a friend of mine from the UK. She works on the Internet doing stuff through her company AvidMode. She and I exchange ideas, reviews, and jokes on a regular basis. She often takes time out for herself by taking a beautiful nature walk to her appointments. That's brilliant.

Leanne Stewart took some time out for herself. As a result, she lives in Norway. I enjoy reading
her posts every chance I get. You can tell how happy she is...exactly where she is. And she'll remain so wherever that leads her.

James Bush is my oldest son. His girlfriend Thia Zimmerman keeps us updated with what he's doing. He is one of the best guitar players I've ever heard. And I've heard a lot of guitar players. He didnt' get that way without taking some time out for himself.

My daughter Natalie Rebecca Jackson and her husband Tyler Jackson are both very busy. Not only with their jobs, but they also own Four Corners Photography. She posts great shots from her business page. What I like and remember the mosts are the ones of her family. Gabe, Jackson, etc. Every chance they get, that take time for themselves.

Arthur Bush has a sense of humor. But some of the stuff he says isn't very funny. Other stuff cracks everyone up. He doesn't post that much. Thank goodness we have Erica Morin to keep us up to date. They are taking some time for themselves in November by going to Portugal.

Steven Bush is always moving. He likes his fast car (Mustang). He loves going to car shows, concerts, and other community events. He and Arthur work together. He takes time for himself by combining his love of photography and posts pictures of the events he attends.

Mari Smith is probably the most successful Facebook Marketing expert around. But as I write this I just read a loving post with beautiful pictures of her visiting her loved ones in Scotland. I won't link to it because, she's taking time for herself.

Dennis Littley is a friend and fantastic Chef. We met on Google Plus. He is a travel blogger and chef. His schedule might seem hectic to some. He's up and down the coast visiting hotels and restaurants. But on every trip you'll always find a post where he's relaxing. Soaking in the current environment, and enjoying the moment. He's taking that time for himself.

Nina Trankova, Michele DeSocio, Ron Snayberger and Tony Mobley are part of the Circadians (Facebook) (GooglePlus). We're a small community. We take time out for each other. And we take time for ourselves. We're stronger together for it.

I could go on all day long with this. But I'd rather you and I both take some time out for ourselves. I'm very much wanting to get outside in the garden. I'll also spend time with headphones on the elliptical listening to a a video I created called "Positive Affirmations, My Morning Motivational Movie". It's 25 minutes long and is full of positive messages to myself. I listen to it as often as I can. I have helped a few people make their own. I had someone tell me one day that it was too long...too much stuff on it, and was a time drain. Regardless of that, I've never regret the time I spent making it, the time I've spent listening to it, or the time spent sharing it with others. All of it brings back great memories of relaxation, and accomplishment. What more could one want? Take time out for yourself. You'll never look back and say "I wish I hadn't done that."
I decided to mosie on over and take a gander at your current entries into the "Breakfast With Fiber" Category.

Joining The "More Fiber" Brigade

I eagerly perused your imaginative and scintillating concoctions and made my selection. A nice box of Vanilla Graham Clusters with Vanilla-kissed puffs sounded right down my alley. But, as I began to perform due diligence to study the ingredients of your offering, I couldn't help but notice that 'Twigs" was on the top of the list. I'm sure that Twigs taste great in a bowl of vanilla and milk. But that's not what concerns me.

A Little More Ambitious Than I Had Anticipated

I'm just a beginner taking little bitty baby steps. I don't think I'm quite ready to step up to that level of dedication to the fiber life. Twigs just sounds like more roughage than I would enjoy. Do you have some sort of 'Starter Kit"? Maybe something with PineStraw or Hay? I would even consider peanut hulls as an alternative. In the meanwhile I'm throwing some sawdust and cardboard in the bowl and will try to muster up the courage to meet you at some level in the future.
People are unhappy about their jobs, relationships, health, and living conditions. Religious and political leaders are the worst they have ever been. And yet, some people love their careers, spouses and homes. They enjoy great health. They seem to be happy at church and with their leaders. What's the difference between the two? It depends on who you're listening to.

Here's An Easy To Understand Example

Go to a football game. At the end of the game talk to people from the losing side. Most of them will talk about the bad umpires. Some will tell you about the performance of the players. They will talk about the bad seats, weather, time, and food. They are focused on it. They are looking for people to collaborate and share in their suffering. Misery loves company.

Then Talk To The Victors

They may talk a little about the things that didn't go well. But mostly they will be reliving and sharing the great throws, catches, touchdowns and tackles. They barely remember the calls that went against them. They are happy about the outcome. They are focused on it and want to share all that goodness with others. Everybody loves a winner.

Which One Would You Rather Talk To?

Before you answer that, think about it. It says a lot about you. It's easy to say you prefer the winner over the whiner. But which one do you actually do? Look around you. If you're surrounded by whiners, maybe you're a whiner too. I know I am sometimes. But I'm working on that. I'm trying to reduce my contact with negative influences.

That Includes Movies, Music, Books and Online Activities

There is plenty of research that shows what we listen to effects our attitude. That's why I created "Positive Affirmations - My Morning Movie". It's a 25 minutes long video I created listing the things I'm thankful for. It have music, video, and quotes. I listen to it in the morning to help me focus and stay positive. When I listen to it, I have a great day. When I don't listen to it, I can tell the difference. And it's the same thing with every positive thing I do. When I run and exercise, I feel better. When I eat healthy food, I feel better. When I listen to positive information, I feel better and #GSD.

So As Much As Possible, Listen To Positive Things

That's it. Just listen to positive things. It won't necessarily fix all that ails you, but it will fix some. And it doesn't mean you won't hear negativity. But it will affect the way you respond to stuff.

And I don't have a big garden anymore. But I do grow a lot of stuff in a very small space. I think I do pretty good with it. I work it year round, but more so in the spring. On Sunday's, I usually sift a little soil from a compost pile. That's what the picture is. I made this contraption about three years ago. I call it my Shamgar Soil Sifter.

Shamgar Was A Judge

In the old testament. He is one of my favorite characters. Shamgar got in a fight with a bunch of guys from another country. I honestly don't remember the number. I think it was about 600. He fought them using nothing but an oxgoad. He whipped them all. But that's not why I like the story so much.

He Didn't Look For Anything Special

He just used what he had. And he didn't 'wait' for others to join or help him. He just started right where he was. If he would have acted in any other way, the outcome would have been different. I think it's because he 'saw' that. Maybe a vision or something.

That's Why I'm Doing The "One Thing" Daily Now

And you should too. Just pick out something you're going to get done. Tell others about it, and then go do it. Don't wait for all the starts to be in align. They never will be. If it's personal, then tell someone special. If it's about business, tell someone you trust in business. And it doesn't have to be a large step. Any step will do. Just do what you can, when you can, where you are, and with what you have.

And This Is What I'm Focusing ON

Sifting the soil. With a hand made soil sifter. It may not be pretty, but at the time...it was all I had. And it's served me well for a few years. I've not had to do much repair on it. And below are the results from last year.

If I had to guess, I'd say there are less than 200 photos. Looking at the site gives you the illusion that there are more. But there isn't. And that's not a bad thing. Because it has a uniqueness to it that's difficult to put your finger on. Until you read the 'About' page..

Who's Behind This Site?

It's not a major corporation. It's not a celebrity, or even a well known photographer. It's a grandson showing his admiration and love for his grandfather. Here's an exerpt:

CC0.photo is a project initiated by Raffael Herrmann, which serves you with free (and I mean really free) photos. All pictures are taken by myself or my (sadly deceased) uncle Peter Janzen. You can find out whether a photo is taken by me or my uncle, by looking for the post author on the photo detail pages.

That's it. And once I read that, I wanted to view more photos. If not because of their quality, because of their QUALITY. By that, I mean the quality of the relationship it paints. I wanted to know how many of the pictures they took together. How many of these images rush at Raffael with memories that live because of them. Were they walking together when Hokenstraße at night was taken. Did they watch the Fireworks over Goslar together? And what's the significant history behind Historical Window Behind A Tree? I wanted to know more about the people that were taking the photos.

What Kind Of Photos Can You Expect

It's a good mix. I can't say for sure, but it looks like Peter Janzen mixed it up with still life and animals. Lots of country roads, fields, cats, dogs and even a ram. Raffael seems to like architecture, technology, and anything with water. All of them are better than average, and some of them are really outstanding. I still feel like the stories behind them are what makes the shots though.

Are They Really Free?

Yes. Absolutely. It says that in more than one place, but here is the license ;

All photos on cc0.photo are released under the CC0-license, which means that you are allowed to use the photos for free. You’re also allowed to share or modify the photos – for private, public and commercial purposes! All pictures are dedicated to the public domain. This means you even don’t have to set a backlink. No attribution required! (That is not to say, that I wouldn’t be happy if you set a backlink nevertheless…)

What's The Site Running On?

It's an Ubuntu OS running an Apache Web server. The site is running on Word Press, using Yoast and many other free plugins. The site would be doable by most developers.

Where Else You Can Find CC0

I didn't find a Twitter, Google Plus, or Pinterest account, but they very well may have one. What I found was a Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/cc0.photos . Raffael has continued to take pictures, as the I have seen one as recently as January 12, 2016. I hope he continues, and leaves the site, it's pictures, and it's memories with his grandson. Well done.
I have to admit that I almost gave up on this site. The only reason I stuck it out was because I had read so many good things about it. I simply couldn't navigate it. I couldn't find any of the free images. You can find the site here : DeathToTheStockPhoto.com . The photo above is from the site, but I only found it AFTER I started my review.

I Had Just About Given Up

In fact, I had already made the image for this review. I'll post it below, but basically it was an image that said "I give up". I just didn't want to keep searching for the images. I was going to write an article that said 'They may be free, but you have to sign up for their email notifications to find them." Which isn't true. They are free, at least I think they are. Here's a link to their License which was too much gobble dee gook for me. In my humble opinion, images are either free or they aren't. And just tell me in a few sentences if they are. I've already seen plenty of sites that do that. And I prefer it.

How Many Times Will I Have To Change This Image

I have a system for these reviews. I spend time going over the site. I make my notes, I download the images, I create the main image (seen above) and then start typing. It works great. By the time I start, I've got the logos, the links, and the licenses ready to go. That way I get to start and get to focus on the images and review. But that didn't happen here. Far from it. I had to REDOWNLOAD and create the image four times. It could have been a fifth, but I decided if the logo isn't important to them, it shouldn't be for me either.

Am I Giving This Site A Negative Review?

No. Far from it. Their images, business model, and writing show a great deal of creativity. It's worth the visit alone just to see the images from the Big Sur, Cycling in Seattle, or Fitness shoots. Now that you know what they are, go find them. And that's the part that's frustrating.

And What's Up With The Name?

Is it DeathToStock, Death To Stock Photo, or Death To THE Stock Photo? The first page says 'Death To Stock', and is the image on the top left of the image on the top of this page. But when you go here, to the Premium Login page, you're going to see a different image. And then at the bottom of the About Page, you'll see yet another one. And you must not forget the one on the Twitter page. I'd just like to know which one I should refer to you as.

Let's Get Back To The Pictures

So that you don't have to spend time clicking on the image at the bottom of the front page, or looking at the "Shop' page, or maybe seeing if there's a hidden link underneath the main menu.... let me tell you how to get to these really interesting photos on this site. Click on Blog. Now click on the 'Read Onward" button. Yes. That's the one. The one that makes you think you are going to go read a blog post. There's your pictures. That's what you've been looking for... except.. wait, there's only about four images on each page. Except other times when there's only two. And of course, there's also the pages that have three images and a link to join the premium club. For only $15 you can get an email once a month to ... uhhm... let me see... SOME pictures. I don't even see how many there are.

Apparently This Business Model Has Worked For Them

From what I've read, they have over 150,000 email subscribers. If each one of them represents $15 a month, then they have a great business model. And I commend them for it. But, I wouldn't subscribe. Ever. Not because the images aren't good, but because I'm not their target market. I don't need to subscribe to get images. I can get what I need from some of the other great sites I've reviewed. But if you're the kind of person that needs an unorganized, artsy fartsy concept driven, hard to navigate to find what you're looking for website... this one is made especially for you. You'll be able to spend hours on it without every actually finding anything.

What's It Running On?

Wordpress. Nothing too complicated. There may be some other neat features of it, but I was worn out just looking for the pictures. I didn't want to look for anything else.

Where Else Can You Find Them?

If you're like me, you'll find these easier to use. So, check out Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus. And enjoy some great images, that 'might' be free, or 'might' not. I don't know. I just know I didn't 'bookmark' this site. As I said, I'm not their target market.
