Meet Wyson at the “Be More Race”

Wyson Jere, a house help in Lilongwe will be joining the Standard Bank sponsored “Be More” Marathon slated for July 30, 2017.
Born on June 2, 1995 in T/A Chigaru Blantyre, Wyson has always nurtured a dream to become a professional athlete.

He dropped out of school due to lack of tuition fees. He then left Blantyre in search of work to earn an income needed to support his family back home. Wyson also continues to pursue his dream of becoming a professional track man and body builder.
Racing in the “Be More” marathon is a part of Wyson’s quest to raise funds to go back to school.

“Win or lose, I am still chasing my dream to raise funds to go back to school, and join the Malawi Defense Force as a soldier later,” says Wyson, who dropped out in Form 1.
In Lilongwe, he has found a supportive employer Isabel Kumwembe who doubles up as his athletics manager.

“After observing his fighting spirit, I decided to help empower him so that he does not remain a house helper for the rest of his life. I believe in the concept of helping one learn how to fish, as opposed to just giving one fish, and hence have spent a lot of time observing and discovering what Wyson’s passions and talents are,” said Kumwembe.
Wyson has been training hard every day in preparation for the July 30 race. For Wyson, participating in the “Be More” race is more than a personal fight. “I want to raise awareness about the plight of many others in similar situations like me. I have a dream; one day, I hope to run at the Olympics,” he says.

Standard Bank says they would like to turn the “Be More” race into an annual signature event to raise funds for education and health.
The sponsorship of the ‘Be More’ race underscores Standard Bank’s passion in taking the lead to create meaningful engagement for customers and other stakeholders. The theme “Be More” describes how far the bankers are willing to go to demonstrate that they can do more than banking and impact positive change and move lives forward within their community.
Over time, “Be More” race aims to become a leading, authentic endurance signature event on the race calendar in Malawi to be subscribed annually by diverse interest groups.

Half the population Of Malawi is comprised of young people. Currently the youth face diverse problems such as high unemployment rate, Social inequalities, low education, homelessness, gender discrimination. As such their transition to adulthood needs to be understood in the larger context.

Investing in the young people in terms of education, health and economic empowerment could result in an increased share of the working-age which can foster economic growth. Hence the serious need to look into cultivating the entrepreneurial culture among them.

For this reason, Standard Bank in partnership with UNICEF and the Government of Malawi will on March 28 host the first ever Malawi Social Economic Forum to put the spotlight on the potential of the Malawi youth market and bring customers closer to the market’s opportunities.
Under the theme; Youth Entrepreneurship: Creating Opportunities to build Mother Malawi, the forum will provide business leaders with information on economic insights in Africa, SADC and Malawi. UNICEF and the Ministry of Youth, Labour and Man Power development will present the 2016 Youth Status Report.

Policy makers, UN, Government officials are some of the speakers for the conference scheduled to take place at Bingu International convention Centre. The forum will also highlight the significance of the partnership between Standard Bank, UNICEF, government and clients in building a better Malawi.

Renewable energy to light up your life

To meet the challenge of access to reliable power for all Tanzanians, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals recently reported that it will be spending a lot more on bringing electricity to rural areas.

The reality remains that while the power network will increase, there will only be so much electricity being generated to cover that network. So, we need to all start thinking about how we can each contribute to being a lot more efficient with the power we use at work and at home.

We should all be thinking about making use of renewable energy sources, such as the sun and wind. At home it could be as simple as considering installing solar lighting panels to provide electricity.

Not only will it ensure you have reliable lighting for your home, but will also cut your spend on electricity. And we all like to save money wherever we can.

To read more about what the Minister said about Tanzania's energy needs go to http://bit.ly/29yT0UW.

You need to access different services from the bank anytime, anywhere. With Standard Bank Internet Banking, you can view balances, statements, transfer money and pay your bills online.

The most common question that people ask themselves is: can an online money transfer service really be safe?

We have various security features in place to ensure your money and transactions remain secure. However, there are steps you need to take to ensure total security online:
•Keep your password (PIN) secret
•Log out properly at the end of each session
•Do not respond to any email that prompts you to reveal your ID, password, PIN or account details. Standard Bank will never send out such messages nor ask for such information in an email.

The best control practice is to check your account statement regularly for any fraudulent transactions. If you find anything suspicious, call us immediately on 247 or let us know via our Standard Bank Malawi Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/standardbankmalawi/ or our Twitter profile http://twitter.com/standardbankMW.

We recently painted five classrooms in Blantyre under the project Happy classrooms. This was done in celebration of 47 years of banking in Malawi. As a Malawian bank, we are committed to supporting the communities in which we operate. Our staff were more than happy to get involved in painting the classrooms.

This was done in collaboration with boNGO Worldwide International, a non-profit non-governmental organization established in 2007 with the aim of raising the standards of education in Malawi. You may read more on http://www.bongoworldwide.org.

We look forward to paint more classrooms under this initiative in 2016.
