Perhaps because her husband was an English professor I thought of a similar situation that was facing Eugene O'Neill in 1940. O'Neill was a playwright and the first American to win the Nobel Prize for literature. O'Neill owned a well-loved Dalmatian named Blemie, who had grown old and was near death. To convince his wife, Carlotta, that he was coping with the eventual loss of the animal that he often described as "my only successful child," O'Neill wrote a "last will and testament", supposedly composed by the dog (Click here...)

Getting along with others is called socialization. It’s the same for cats, and dogs, and people. If we lived alone in a cave, we would not look forward to dinner out. We would, instead, fear it. The input, the decisions, not knowing what was expected of us, it would be overwhelming. Can we increase our cat's socialability? But sometimes, fear grips dogs so tightly they shake, cower, bite, growl or pee. It can be constant, painful and hard to overcome. So which techniques should you focus on for your dog? It depends. Does he like to sprint ahead or is happy to lag behind or meander at your side? Or is he so nervous of the environment that he won’t take treats? Here are three starting points and the progression into a walk (Click here...)

After ten years of renovation, Holland's Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will reopen its doors on April 13, 2013. The national museum, built in 1885, is home to thousands of works from the 17th Century Golden Age of Dutch painting, including many renowned Rembrandts . But, according to Wim Pijbes, General-Director of the Rijksmuseum, their 21st century vision for the museum is to be modern (Click here...)

Dogs do have a variety of distinct facial expressions, however canines are much more limited in what they can do with their faces. This is because a dog's face is dominated by his muzzle. A dog's muzzle serves as both a weapon and a tool to manipulate the environment, so it is designed for strength rather than for flexibility. That means that the mouth and the lower portion of the dogs face can only adopt a limited range of expressions (Click here...)

We warn people all of the time about keeping guns out of the reach of children. Perhaps now there's good reason to give the same warning when it comes to dogs. We made it home from a quick trip to town, just as some of the snow was coming down. We got home and one of our new friends called us because she was driving up the mountain over the past few days to take care of our neighbor's dogs and kitty. But she didn't think she could safely make it up there and asked if we would go feed the pets and check their water (Click here...)

A woman says she was assaulted by a man after she confronted him for having his pit bulls off leash at a public park. If you know me... you know what a big proponent I am of keeping your dog safe in the car when traveling! Especially since Gracie, Mum and I experienced a pretty bad accident coming back from an agility trial. back in 2007. The great thing is that we were all buckled up in our crates in the back of our Rover and came away with only some stress issues with Gracie, a couple of bruised ribs (me) and a very slight concussion for Mum (Click here for prizes...)

In more than 80 portraits, award-winning pet photographer and animal rights activist Seth Casteel captures new sides of our old friends with vibrant underwater photography that makes it impossible to look away. Each image in Underwater Dogs bubbles with exuberance and life, a striking reminder that even in the most loveable and domesticated dog, there are more primal forces at work (Click here...)

Adam and Dog is a stunning hand-animated watercolor short, featuring pitch-perfect animal movements, especially those of the dog. The mouth, teeth, and skull of dogs are incredibly well adapted to meet the needs of one of nature’s most perfectly designed scavengers. The oral cavity of the dog is also the source of many myths and misunderstandings that lead to some potentially serious problems. Here are some of the most common, interesting, and important dental questions I’m regularly asked in my practice (Click here...)

I recently read a report about how Mineta San Jose International Airport's passenger waiting area is regularly visited by therapy dogs for a few hours each week. The program began after the 9/11 terrorist attacks which used hijacked passenger planes as weapons. This is a classic line out of the mouths of veterinary surgeons who relish their time spent in the operating room, donned in surgical garb and cutting to the beat of their favorite music (Click here...)
