Starcraft 2 Replays - Analysis from SC2Review.net

Just wanted to give everyone an example of a analysis that was done on my "Review of Starcraft 2 Replays" site. We are still working on quality and being more fluid with our speech, but soon we will be rolling out as many reviews as possible. Here is just a simple game where we discuss decision making as well as general macro tips.

The player played decently well, however made some terrible decisions in terms of engaging the opponent's army.

I'm working on trying to go more in-depth with certain things, and taking things slower. Possibly using replays to get a certain point across, and perhaps make a series of how to get from bronze to master league or something, but we'll see.

For now, enjoy this replay review.

Starcraft 2 Coaching and Reviews of Replays

Hi guys! Just wanted to let you know that my site is up and running. I have a few coaches, including myself, offering Starcraft 2 coaching. If anyone is interested, please visit SC2Review.net, and click around and check out the following options.

I plan to be much more active in Starcraft 2 coaching and reviewing replays.

So make sure to come and check me out, where it be through coaching or replay reviews. I should also have a youtube page up and running shortly which will have all the reviews of Starcraft 2 replays that I do.

As far as my Starcraft 2 coaching experience...

I am a new coach, but I have helped a few students reach higher leagues already. In addition, I actively compete in tournaments and have a fairly high ladder ranking. As for my teaching experience, outside of Starcraft 2, I was a teacher's assistant for undergraduate Organic Chemistry. I also do a lot of lectures regarding health related topics currently. I hope if anyone comes to check out the coaching pages, to consider me for your Starcraft 2 coaching.

FPVOD: cSObroto [z] vs LiquidVag [z] on Metalopolis

Here is an example of how I like to play my ZvZ.

Lots of roaches, splitting up armies, taking small advantages to drone, and get fucking broodlords when I can:

How I learned to macro and go from Silver league to Masters league (as Zerg)

2011-02-01T09:02:00.000-08:00

In the beta, I started off as a silver level player. I was lucky enough to speak with CatZ and Sheth back then, and they pounded into my brain that macro should be my main focus. As a Zerg player, this is our strength, so I had to learn to do it as best as possible and exploit this strength to the fullest.

I understand I'm not the highest level player out there and can make mistakes in judgement, decision making, and strategy, but I think this can help lower level players the way it helped me.

So I see a lot of miscers and others stuck below diamond and have been there for a while and wondering to themselves, HOW THE FUCK DO I GET BETTER?! A recent discussion between a few other misc members (asd, aaroB, tada, etc.) and myself has led me to write this. I know you've all heard it before, but what I want all you lower level players is to focus on MACRO MACRO MACRO (don't worry, I'll get into how to accomplish this in a bit). A thread on teamliquid.net has gotten some action as well, where a player purposefully lost all his placement matches to be placed in bronze. From there, he did NO micro and just focused on macro - building workers, keeping money low, and expanding, all whilst making units to defend. After that, he would just 1a stalkers towards the opponent's base and win (again, no micro).

I'm sure many of you know that you should focus on macro, but how do you do that? You need to set a foundation of what you are trying to accomplish. Here are two exercises that got me out of silver, into gold, raped through platinum, and climbed through diamond. This was in a matter of 2-3 weeks of beta.

Goal #1: Get 3 bases and max out in 14 minutes or less:

Way back when I was a lowly silver player, I did not know how to drone and when to take bases. Basically keep droning until you need units to defend. Sheth had me do nothing but get to 3 saturated bases, then make units (units before saturated 3 bases only to defend).

Fire up a game against a very easy computer -
-15 hatch
-15 pool
-double queen when your pool is finished
-inject, make drones and overlords, repeat
-take a 3rd when you are having money left over and no larvae to spend it on
-when you have 3 bases saturated (~70 drones), spam roaches and overlords or whatever and get to 200/200.

Didn't get 14 minutes or less? Try again and again and again! That should give you an idea of how you should play if you are unhindered by any harrass, etc. It should also improve your speed. You can try this in ladder as well, just making units and spines as needed to defend. Remember to keep injecting, using your larvae, and getting overlords.

After getting this simple macro goal down, I went from silver to diamond very quickly. It took time, but was very easy macroing and making units off of 3 bases to overwhelm all my opponents. Of course, you have to take your 4th eventually, but focus on this first.

"HOLY SHIT SO MUCH MONEY OFF OF 3 BASES FFFFUUUUUUUUUU!!!!"

Goal #2: Keep your money below 1000 minerals!

I showed Sheth some of my progress in replays. He said something along the lines of "okay, but I want to see you have 1 game where you keep your minerals below 1000."

When I first started doing this, I could not for the shit of me and mother, keep my money low. I wasn't used to the income off of a saturated 3 bases. You can't just make a goal and say "okay, keep money low". Set a number! 1000 minerals was my first number - I eventually lowered it to 800, then 600, etc. 1000 minerals is a good starting point (for zerg at least). When you get close to 1000 minerals, SPEND IT ON ANYTHING! Units, upgrades, overlords, hookers, or whatever the hell you want. If you go over 1000 minerals, look at it as a failure and find out what you did wrong.

What will keeping your money low force you to do?
- keep your energy low on queens
- constantly make units/workers
- constantly expand
- force you to research upgrades
- force you to not get supply blocked

Step 2 brought me from low level diamond to mid-level diamond, where actual strategies, micro, and good decision making were needed to win the game. Of course it will get harder to accomplish these goals as you climb ladder.

Okay bros, please please please work on step 1 for a week or two. This helped me tremendously. After you can get a consistent 3 base max in 14 minutes, try it on ladder and make units just to defend. Expect to lose a lot too. However, once you get this down along with good scouting, you will be raping and pillaging lesser sc2 bros who don't know how to macro and stay on 1 base. They will say you are "IMBA" and you will respond with "LOL NOOB".

So try it out and leave me questions, feedback, comments, whatever.

Zerg vs Protoss - A decent macro game!

2011-01-31T20:16:00.000-08:00

Hey guys! A decent ZvP for you guys on Scrap Station.

Instead of the protoss dictating the way I play, the roles are reversed for a change :)

I still need to work on talking and playing at the same time. I only cheered my units on this game lol.

FPVOD: Zerg vs Terran on Lost Temple

2011-01-28T12:36:00.000-08:00

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get any real good games lately. Here's a replay of how I have to react to seeing 2-3 early barracks. The Terran has the choice to expand or push out behind his 2-3 barracks, and this makes it difficult for me having to prepare my economy, or preparing unneeded defenses setting back my economy.

Some things I have to work on:

- reseting creep tumors

- not over-reacting to 2 early barracks, also not under-reacting

- drone saturation for my 3rd

- flanking

Hopefully I'll be able to play some challenging macro games. The last few have either been cheeses or just roll overs.

Thanks for watching guys! Tune in when I'm live too and talk to me in chat.

Some people have mentioned it, but those people looking to buy SC2, Amazon has it for $50. It came out at $60 and I can definitely say it has paid for itself and 10x more in entertainment, fun, and making new friends.

FPVOD: Starcraft 2 Masters League Zerg 1v1 Tournament Match - ZvT on Steppes of War

2011-01-27T09:15:00.000-08:00

Hey guys! Just a game I played yesterday vs a terran on Steppes of War.

How to do an effective 4 drone rush followed up by a macro game! Went a bit longer than I think it should have, but I have trouble attacking into terrans and finding those openings and vulnerabilities.

Video will be processing, but should be up shortly! Enjoy:

Starcraft 2 Masters League Zerg - ZvP 4 Gate

Here's a short first person VOD. This is a game where I go up against a protoss who does a 4 gate and don't react properly. However, I make the best out of a bad situation.

Again, no real commentary - but I will soon! I just need to work on talking while playing.

Things I could have done better:
- Scouting
- Overlord placement
- Overlord sacking
- Better spine crawler placement

Update on Jungle Basin and a bit on Adsense

2011-01-21T07:23:00.000-08:00

Some Starcraft II news:

An update live on the EU server is a small change to Jungle Basin, but will change the game a LOT. There is now a gold base outside of your main base. 3rd base is easy now... but Terran is going to be able to herp derp stomp everything and take its 4th base so easy. It's going to be interesting to see how games will now be played on this map.

Off topic news -

An interesting note on Adsense: It seems that for those using Adsense, users won't get credit for when people click on an ad and don't stay on the advertisement for more that 20-25 seconds. It's a shame for bloggers and other users that attract traffic towards those ads because it's not his/her fault that the advertisement cannot keep the attention of its clickers.

I'll be posting another first person VOD later today of one of my ladder games, so stay tuned!

cSObroto (Z) vs Kyo (P)

2011-01-19T22:09:00.000-08:00

Hey guys! Please be patient while the video processes, but it should be up soon!

Just a friendly game between me and Kyo. Kyo is a very good Master's league protoss player who plays mostly just practice games rather than playing on the ladder. He kicks my ass most of the time, but let's see how he does here.

Watch live video from brotosterone's SCII stream on Justin.tv

I could have done a lot of things better, such as creep spread and properly droning and setting up my 3rd base. I'll be continuing to find places where I need to improve. Let me know if you have any questions.

Oh, and I'll try to commentate what I'm doing and why I'm doing it much more for the next vid I post up.

Thanks guys!
