We have several steps you can follow to help your lawyer work for you and to keep the cost of legal services at a minimum: like gather in advance all information that you think your lawyer may need, write down the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all people involved in your matter, bring any written materials relating to your legal situation, such as receipts, contracts, medical bills, repair estimates, checks, traffic tickets, deeds, wills and letters from the opposing side to the first meeting with your lawyer, ask if there are some aspects of the case that you can handle yourself, bring a written summary of the facts exactly as you remember them, write down the questions that you want your lawyer to answer, avoid calling your lawyer unnecessarily, inform your lawyer of any changes to your address, telephone number and to any situation that may have a bearing on your case, ask the lawyer about ways to resolve your case without going to court, reveal all information, even if it may not be in your favor.

Do remember that your lawyer must keep all information you discuss confidential. We should carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of your case. For instance, could court costs and legal fees be more than the amount of money you would likely recover? Here are legal resources that may be able to help you resolve your legal problem without hiring a lawyer. Very small claims courts offer citizens the chance to resolve minor problems without the need for lawyers.

Numerous small claims courts limit cases to those with claims up to ,000, and exclude certain types of claims, such as divorce, cases involving title to property, and cases involving the state or city. Intimate small claims courts, anyone with a grievance can bring suit, using everyday language, for a relatively low filing cost, usually less than . Nevertheless, you should file suit only after you have exhausted other avenues, for example, writing directly to the person or company involved or discussing the matter with the professionals. Our local Better Business Bureau, credit counseling service, consumer advocacy group, alternative dispute resolution center, or another private agency may be able to assist you, and provide an effective and economical alternative to hiring a lawyer. These types of organizations were created to resolve or correct situations that frequently recur and affect the public. Throughout such agencies, without the expense of hiring a lawyer, you may be able to obtain a statement of your rights, a fast recovery of property or money you have lost, or relief for other damages that you have incurred. Few instances, government organizations and offices can also provide answers or assistance on legal matters.

It always amazes me the number of people who do not realize that they need a lawyer. If you are asking yourself if you need a lawyer, chances are that you do. Plain and simple, you need a lawyer any time you are dealing with any questions regarding laws, court proceedings and contracts. Any time you have to deal with anything to do with a law whether civil or criminal you should have a competent lawyer represent you.

Most of the time, most people only think about hiring a lawyer when they need a lawyer to defend them in a criminal case. So many people just never think about hiring a lawyer to defend their best interest on a day to day basis. Now sure, most of us do not need, much less afford, a lawyer to be at our beck and call every day. But, what about hiring a lawyer to read over a real estate contract, or the nondisclosure agreement that the boss wants you to sign? What about hiring a lawyer to help you negotiate a business deal or go after a nonpaying customer. Many people simple only think about using a lawyer when they need criminal defense or when they want to sue someone. The legal system awards those that understand how to work within its confines. The statement; we are a nation of laws; is probably one of the most prophetic statemnts ever uttered by an American. Why? Because, we are a nation of laws. Just about every aspect of our life is touched by at least one law. So, why wouldn’t you have a lawyer represent you?

There are three reasons why people shy away from having a lawyer represent them. First, lawyers in general have a bad reputation. Lawyers are not known as the defenders of the weak and poor. This is truly one of the biggest myths in America today. Every ground breaking case that added to our legal rights were represented by well intentioned lawyers. Most big class action lawsuits were spear headed by lawyers that would not have been paid if they did not win. The bad reputation of the legal profession really boils down to juries in civil cases giving huge awards. There are bad apples in the cart that do spoil the basket but all in all most lawyers know and do their job with honor and dignity. Second, some people think that all you need is a hand shake to seal a deal. And, if you hire a lawyer to represent you to close a deal then you are being rude to the other party involved. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Long gone are the days where you could trust a man at his word. Long gone are the days where you could expect both parties in a business deal to follow through with their end of the agreement. Third, lawyers are just too expensive. This is just flat out not true. You can find good competent legal representation at a decent price. Just because a lawyer charges more does not mean he or she is better than the cheaper one and vice versa. Most of the time lawyers are called in to sort out issues after the fact. If a lawyer would have been used in the beginning of that business deal then it would have been easier to get both parties to follow through. Or for that matter get one party to pay the other. If a lawyer would have been brought in at the beginning of the a situation it may not have escalated to a point where both parties are suing each other.

Lawyers have the reputation they do because we call them in too late. We don’t have them look at that real estate contract BEFORE we sign it. We don’t have them look at that NDA before we sign it. So now the lawyer has to fight for your rights from a disadvantage. The worse a position you put your lawyer in the more expensive it will be. The point is, if you have to question whether or not you need a lawyer, then you do. Get legal representation before you start that business deal or legal proceeding. Get legal representation early and you will not regret the decision.

Do you have a list of goals and desires that have yet to be fulfilled? Do you find yourself generating exciting new ideas only to find that you lose the motivation to complete them shortly after you get started? Perhaps you talk yourself out of that great new idea even before you even begin to pursue it.

The good news is that there is a very simple yet powerful technique that you can adopt immediately to help you commit to completion. The technique is called decision. Proper decision making ability is a vital life skill that many people fail to develop at all. At first glance, this idea may seem trivial and possibly not useful but consider the context of this discussion. When I talk about decision, I refer to someone’s personal commitment to the completion of a set objective. For some people, the simple act of making a binding agreement with themselves is enough to get the job done. For the majority of people, however, a more bold approach to decision making can be applied for maximum effectiveness.

Consider the following personal example. Before I started my personal development company, Ignite Your Essence, I had been interested in becoming a speaker and I was always studying and testing various ideas and techniques that I was learning about the personal development industry. I knew that I had an inner calling to follow this passion and teach people what I knew about these ideas and philosophies.

I attended an inspirational seminar where the speakers were talking about this very topic. The main message I received that day was that we are all 100% responsible for our results and we are capable of setting any goal we want for our life. I really took this to heart and started to contemplate the idea of becoming a platform speaker - teaching, inspiring and motivating audiences much like the people who I was watching that day. Because I was in a state of mind that allowed me to get emotionally involved with the idea, it grew beyond a daydream and I started thinking about how I could make this happen. I started studying personal development principles for many hours a day and taking note of which techniques I was already using in my current career while learning and applying new ideas in various areas of my life (family, fitness, financial as well as career). Eventually, the idea of starting a business as a speaker grew so heated that I knew I had to do something. For about a week, I played a mental chess match with myself thinking about all the reasons why I should pursue this dream while simultaneously thinking about all of the reasons why I couldn’t do it. As soon as I learned this lesson about decision, everything changed and my life has never been the same.

I woke up one morning and made a committed decision to book my first public workshop. I picked a date about one month out, found a hall to host it and booked the hall with a down payment. I was locked in and committed to doing this! It was both a mental and physical move that made a world of difference. The ambivalence instantly disappeared and my mind moved into a much more creative mode. Instead of worrying about whether or not I could even accomplish this goal, I started asking myself a new set of questions. What topic do I run the workshop on? How do I advertise? Who do I market to? Needless to say I completed that workshop a month later and so began the inception of my own personal development education company which I now run as a full time business (my dream realized).

The key point to be emphasized is that I made a committed decision and backed that decision with a tangible forcing function. Like the stories of the Renaissance explorers, I had arrived at a destination, “burned my ships”, and had no choice but to move forward and deliver the goods.

Can you think about a committed decision you could make today, RIGHT NOW, that could ultimately alter the entire direction of your life? Perhaps there is a trip you have been meaning to take that could open a new window of opportunity – call the travel agent now! If you have been struggling with your health and fitness, maybe you can find a competition to enter and pay the entry fee? Whatever it is, make the decision and lock yourself into the decision to ensure you have a solid forcing function. For me, if I did not put a down payment on the hall rental for my first workshop, I may very well have let the doubt and fear push me to cancel the entire event and ultimately abandoned my dream. If the idea moves you in the direction of your dream or purpose, make the committed decision today!

It can be a rather amusing task to sit back and analyze some of the daily rituals we perform, often without giving any conscious thought. I believe this is a good thing because we would accomplish very little if we had to stop and think about every task we perform.

Just today, I was making the short drive from my home to the library where I do most of my writing, when I noticed I had been completely engrossed in thoughts about the book I am writing. I had to look in the back seat to check if I even brought my laptop and writing materials. I then became aware of all of the other things that had to take place just to make this short trip. Among other things, I had to put on my shoes, put on my jacket, walk from the house to the car, unlock the car with the keyless entry, place my bag in the back seat, sit in the driver’s seat, fasten my seatbelt, start the car, and so on. The entire time this was happening, my thoughts were directed towards my task for the day.

This got me thinking about some of the other habit patterns in our life that we consciously decide to do without really asking ourselves if the task is really the most important thing on our list. For example, many people choose to watch a number of hours of television each day. I personally know people who spend an unusual amount of time daily cleaning their home or randomly browsing the internet. The point I am trying to make is that most of us can probably uncover at least one hour of time each day that we give to meaningless tasks.

The interesting thing is, if you ask most people if they are happy with all of the results in their life, the truthful answer is often no.

My goal is to encourage people to dedicate some time every single day to personal reflection and self development. If you are unhappy with a certain situation, you have the ability to change your thinking, and ultimately your behaviour, so that you can improve that particular circumstance. Instead of watching a daytime drama or indulging in excessive dusting and mopping, you might want to consider picking up a book or audio program that forces you to examine your results.

From my personal experience, this simple action produces an internal reaction. Because you are examining your own personal results, you quickly realize that you are the only one who can change them. Unfortunately, in our society today, people are fixated on producing immediate results and having tangible evidence in their hands the minute they ask for something. With personal development, the true benefits can only be realized when we incorporate the ideas into a habit.

Think about it this way. If you were to make a firm commitment to read or listen to personal development educational programs for even 30 minutes a day for the next two weeks, what kind of positive impact could this have on your life? What if you did it for two months? Similar to unconscious activities such as getting dressed or brushing your teeth, you would start to create a new habit and become the kind of person who automatically takes action on ideas that move you in the direction of improved results.

From personal experience, I can attest to the fact that this kind of self study works. It really is a never ending process because it is part of our nature to grow, expand and develop and ultimately, it provides an excellent opportunity to make positive life changes. As you become more involved in personal development, you will start to notice areas of your life that are working well and other areas that require improvement. This kind of education will help you harness ideas that will improve your results while at the same time, overcome all of the inhibitors standing in the way of you achieving your aim!

A common question I hear is, “Where do I start?” There are so many good authors, philosophies and ideas on this topic that you can never really say which style will work. The best advice I have ever received from this perspective is to study and learn from those who are producing results that you would like in your life. It’s a pretty basic lesson but a very important one. Seek out the people who have already achieved what you would like to achieve and learn from them. Success often leaves clues and it is up to you to find those clues and act on them. With a daily commitment to personal improvement, you will quickly become a master detective you will transform each clue into a tangible action that will lead to a more fulfilled life.

When it comes to abundance and prosperity, expectations are vitally important. By studying the Law of Attraction we understand that we receive exactly what we expect in life. Why is this? How do expectations work with the Law of Attraction?

Your expectation of something is extremely powerful. Everyday you expect fresh running water, you expect transport, you expect your local store to stock an abundance of food. These types of expectations may be common to you, yet in other parts of the world they are not freely available! Your expectation plays a huge part in ensuring that you keep receiving these things.

If you have spent just a little time studying the Law of Attraction then you will know that it is your thoughts and emotions that contain manifesting power. This is because that is all the universe can hear, it doesn’t hear your words or speak our language – but it can interpret the vibration that comes from your thoughts and emotions.

Whatever you vibrate, more of it will be pulled into your reality. If you emit low vibrations like anger, fear, or powerlessness, you will attract experiences that match up to your vibrations. If you emit high vibrations like joy, love, and passion, you will again attract experiences that match up with your vibrations.

Expectation can be likened to a belief, yet it is stronger and more confirmed. A belief is a thought that you keep thinking. An expectation is a thought you keep thinking but also have strong belief that it will occur.

Below you’ll find some simple tips to help you learn to expect the best – and get it!

•	First, you must choose to expect the best in every situation. Start to train your mind onto good thoughts only by developing a strong focus and thinking about things that make you happy. Don’t give your attention to anything unwanted. If you catch yourself thinking a thought unwanted, simply shake your head and let the thought dissipate or say out loud ‘switch’ to signify a change is required. Keep saying things like, “I know this is going to work out for the best,” or “I know I will turn this situation to my advantage somehow,” or “I expect the best and the best always comes to me!”

•	Avoid negative talk like the plague. By “negative talk” I mean complaining, arguing, being miserable or feeling fearful and powerless – anything that drags down your emotions and contradicts your positive expectations. Limit the amount of time you spend with negative people. Some people are easy to complain with than others, do your best to avoid conversations with these people and spend more time feeling positive and spending your time with positive people.

•	Phrase your statements in a positive way that is descriptive of what you want. It is quite easy to recognize what it is that we don’t want, the problem with this is that we have immediate access to that thought in our minds. Instead of using statements that are descriptive of what you don’t want, say what you do want! Instead of saying “This won’t be easy,” say, “I can handle this.” Instead of saying “Don’t slam that door,” say, “Close the door quietly”. Remember, the Law of Attraction doesn’t hear your words, it hears your vibrations. Whatever you give your attention to, you will attract more of.

•	KNOW that your expectation will come true. You may wonder how to “know” when you really don’t know yet! If it hasn’t happened yet, how can you be sure it will? This type of knowing is based solely on faith. You must CHOOSE to know. It might take awhile to get comfortable with this, but once you do it becomes a lot easier. In order to really know, you’re going to have to completely banish doubt and disbelief from your mind. When they pop up, simply push them out of your mind and affirm again that you KNOW your expectation will happen. No exceptions. The only way to master this is through practice.

These four simple things can make a world of difference in your ability to attract what you want, and when the manifestations start to happen, you’ll be able to add them to your list of experiences to give you much more faith and confidence to your expectations – which will make them still more effective!

It’s that time again…the monthly meeting. You break out in a cold sweat just thinking about it. Whether you present to your managers or your employees you are saying to yourself:

	What if I mess up?
What if I repeat myself?
What if the audience doesn’t like what I say?
What if I forget a part of my speech?
What if I look nervous?

It’s okay! You’re not the only one feeling this way. The Book of Lists states that the #1 fear is speaking in public. This fear is greater than the fear of death.

Well, I have the answers to your fears and can help you become an outstanding presenter. These 10 tips will help you become more confident making presentations that achieve results.

1. Start with an End in Mind
Ask yourself, “Why am I speaking?” “What do I want the audience to do after listening to my speech?” This will help you focus on the message you want to share with your audience. It will help you focus on who is your audience, the key points, and what you want your audience to do after listening to you.

2. Keep It Simple
Keep your presentation simple by learning to “speak to express instead of speaking to impress.” What I mean by speaking to impress is when you see speakers using $5 words for $2 situations during speeches and they look uncomfortable doing it. Another example of this is when presenters overuse PowerPoint. Your audience will soon lose interest in what you are saying.

Also keep it simple with the structure of your speech. An opening, body with tree major points, and a closing will help you connect with your audience. Just be sincere, concise, and simple in your presentation and you will always connect with your audience.

3. Practice, Practice, Practice
Master your presentation by practicing. Here’s the secret to practicing…first read your speech to yourself 2-3 times. This allows you to work out the majority of the rough spots in your presentation before you start rehearsing.

Then rehearse in front of a mirror or even better a video camera or tape player. Also try to rehearse in front of someone whose opinion you value.

Then practice as close as possible to your speaking environment as possible. For example, if you will be speaking behind a lectern, practice with your notes on an ironing board.

4. Visualize Success
Before going to sleep the night before a presentation I take time to visualize the success of the presentation. The key to making visualization work for you is involving as many senses (sound, touch, sight, smell, etc.) as possible in your visualization. Have you ever had a dream where it seemed so real you awoke in a cold sweat (You don’t need to tell me what the dream was)? It was because you used all your senses and that dream became so real to you that you needed to escape from it.

Visualize yourself giving a successful presentation where you see yourself as a confident presenter, hear yourself handling questions, etc. Visualize successful presentations so that it becomes real.

5. Eat the Elephant
I ask the timeless question, “How do you eat an elephant?” Piece by piece. The same answer applies to presenting to a group. How do you present to a group? Person to person. Break the group into individuals.

“How do I present to a large group?” is one of the biggest questions people have when giving presentations. Get personal. Whenever possible, I will make sure I arrive early to the room I’m presenting in and plant myself by the entrance. I will then greet as many people as possible that walk through the door. I will shake their hands and let them know I am glad they came. Here’s a tip for guaranteeing a positive audience:

* As you greet, look for pleasant, upbeat people. Then say something like, “I’m especially glad you made it today. As a matter of fact there’s a sit in the front row with your name on it. Please enjoy!”

The audience member will usually chuckle and you started the personalization process. Also this allows you to stack all the friendly audience members in the front rows. It’s always nice to see friendly faces in the front row.

Remember, when giving a presentation, it’s not about your needs or concerns. It’s about the audience’s needs or concerns. Make it personal and eat the elephant!

6. Nail Your Opening
It’s the first words your audience hears. Know your opening like the back of your hand. Know exactly what you are going to say. Once you get started and gain some momentum you will start to gain confidence for the rest of your speech.

It helps to pause for 3-5 seconds before you are about to start your presentation so that can focus on what you are about to say.

7. Nail Your Ending
It’s the last words your audience hears and reminder about you. You can have a great opening and body and have a bad ending and your audience your always remember how you ended.

Ask your audience to take action, think about an idea, etc. so that they understand why they are there.

8. Backup if You Forget
If you forget what you are about to say or lose your place in the presentation do the following:

	* Stop speaking. Take two steps backward. Then take a
deep breath. Collect your thoughts. Smile. Take two steps
forward and proceed with your presentation.
* Go back and repeat the last sentence. That will help
trigger what comes next in your presentation.
* If you really go blank, ask an audience member what was
the last sentence you said. Also, if they have handouts of
your speech, you can ask the audience what is the next
subject we will discuss. You will be surprised how many
people will volunteer this information to help you. This will
give you time to collect your thoughts, involve the
audience, and go forward with your presentation.

Note: If you forget a piece of information, collect yourself, and then go forward. Never say, “I’m sorry.” Unless the audience has a copy of every single word of your speech they will never know you forgot something.

9. Realize Nervousness is the Tool of Great Presenters
Believe it or not, all presenters, whether professional or occasional, are nervous when presenting. The difference is the best presenters use nervousness to their advantage by turning nervousness into positive energy. Here are some tips to control nervousness:

	* Whenever possible walk from the back of the room to burn some of the nervous energy.
* Slow your breathing
* Stretch

10. Get Excited
Get excited so that the audience is excited about hearing your presentation.

Some of the ways you can become excited is:

	* Remember what you say is important and can make a difference for your audience.
* Every opportunity to present is a chance for you to succeed.
* Every time you speak you become better than the last time.
* Presenting will expose me to countless opportunities I wouldn’t have by not presenting.

So the next time you have the opportunity to present apply the above techniques. You will have fun while presenting on a whole new level.

Achieving success will require commitment. This is a concept that far too many people are not willing to obey. The reason is that they loose patience and give up on their commitments and therefore give up on their goals and dreams.

Some won’t commit because they want a guarantee that everything will work out. But the only guarantee is that if you do not commit you will not succeed.

It has been said that clarity comes after commitment. If you do not start with a commitment and stay with it, then you will never see your successes. Once you have committed and follow through with your commitment, then you can clearly see even further.

When you say “I want to achieve success,” that is not a commitment. What you should say is: “I will achieve success.” Now you have a clearly defined commitment.

You must eliminate options and excuses that get in the way of making real commitments. You will not get it done with “maybe someday” If you want to truly succeed. Do not allow giving up to be one of your options.

Commitment is a sign of your integrity. When you show your commitment to your business associates, you are demonstrating your level of integrity and your commitment to success at the same time.

Commitment is what you have left after the excitement of an opportunity has worn off. Some are tempted to give up on their commitment to success when the excitement of the new idea has passed. Realizing this will keep a more enlighten person in the game. You need to stay in the game to win.

Those that are hesitant to commit will be ineffective in receiving success. On the other hand, when you are committed powerful things occur that would not have occurred without the strength of your commitment.

Patience and commitment are partners. Your commitment means that you will give what you have to give until the success is achieved. That will require your patience.

When you are committed, you will be and feel in control. You are not allowing the laziness of non committal to take you over. You are going for what you want.

Commitment is a mountain that is created inside of you. You must surrender to it and be willing to trust.

Commitment is seen by some as too much work. The time and energy that it takes is too overwhelming for them. This makes a great excuse for them to not commit at all. But the truth is when we commit we experience fewer struggles as we now have an anchor in commitment.

As we commit to become successful, we will begin to see a new way of living. We will find even greater things to commit to. It will be too great to ever want to go back to a life with no commitment or direction. Your commitments will serve as a reminder of your purpose in live. It is with your patience and your commitment that you will have all of the success you desire.

This isn’t a marginal or fringe concept either, mainstream press are devoting whole magazine editions to the subject, like Newsweek who ran a “Spirituality” Issue Aug 29 - Sept 5, 2005.

There are numerous studies also that support a growing American movement towards acceptance of prayer and it’s powers to heal. According to Dr. Hollowell from WoldNetDaily,

“one of the best-known studies was conducted by Randolph Byrd in the cardiac-care unit of San Francisco General Hospital. All subjects were given routine standard care, but prayer groups prayed for half of the patients. Patients who weren’t mentioned in prayers were nearly twice as likely to suffer health complications as those who received prayer.

Another study of 1,000 cardiac patients conducted at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., concluded “the group receiving prayers fared 11 percent better than the group that didn’t.”

Researchers at Columbia University and Cha Hospital of Korea reported that women undergoing in vitro fertilization had higher rates of pregnancy when groups of strangers anonymously prayed for them.”

This is mainstream attention to the subject of prayer, spirituality and meditation. The problem, of course arises when we get mired into a discussion of semantics - to one person prayer is religious, while meditation is not - or worse; it is pagan. Apparently this is also the core of the inflammatory argument that has broken out all over American culture. In the end it is not just semantics, it is a question of who has the right and power to control our beliefs and tell us what to do and how to do it.

Those who call themselves religious, as well as those who call themselves spiritual (and this is a semantic debate that has broken families apart) can both agree that the power of prayer/meditation works. It works because it harnesses a spiritual energy and makes a spiritual request for assistance from, dare I say it - God (in whatever form you like him or her).

I personally am not so concerned with the words that a person uses to convey their faith - but rather with the true intention in their heart - an absence of malice, control, and desire to be right or dominant, is benevolent. Anything else is malevolent. If we all know that meditation, visualization and prayer works, no matter what you call it, then let’s get busy actually doing it!

My own experience of meditation, visualization and prayer is that it may or may not turn out as you plan or as you expect, because there is a greater force at work in the world, and it has a much broader view and more benevolent plan than can be understood by those of us trapped in the illusion of duality that is so present in our current world. And it is precisely this force that we need to connect with, through prayer, visualization and meditation — in order to overcome this heated debate and restore love — not semantics to our daily discussions.

Actually, mediation is just the fist step in a series of tools and techniques that we can each learn to use that allow us to tap into — and actually use — the dormant 97% of our brain power. These keys are effective and, even better, they actually work. Now science is beginning to catch up and understand that there is, in fact, more to us humans than meets the eye.

Leverage is everything. Understanding leverage and how to take advantage of it is the first step to understanding your finances and to amassing wealth.

So what is leverage anyway? “Leverage” can be defined as “positional advantage” or “power to act effectively.” As social creatures, we all use leverage to our advantage. Let me give you an example. Those of you who know me, probably know that my son plays youth soccer and I am perhaps one of the best youth soccer coaches that ever was.

As a coach, I am tasked with figuring out how to turn a bunch of five to seven year olds into a winning team. The key is to building a winning team is to fit the children to the right position - be it goalkeeper, back, forward, or sweeper. This involves assessing each child’s strengths and assigning the children to positions that take advantage of their natural abilities. Some of the kids have the ability to run fast, some have excellent coordination and ball skills, and others have a good understanding of teamwork and the rules of the game. Few have more than one of these natural abilities, but many have none of them. Some skills are coachable and others are not.

By assigning the children to positions that “leverage” their natural talents it allows the child to excel at the game, to enjoy and get a sense of accomplishment out of the game, and to win games and boost my ego. This is exactly the kind of leverage that one must understand and employ to reach their financial goals.

So you might be asking what leverage has to do with finances. The answer is simple. Leverage is how one creates wealth.

There are numerous resources that can be leveraged to create wealth. Most people leverage their time, knowledge, skills and abilities as employees to earn a salary. The greater the time, knowledge, skills or ability the greater the salary. Most people also leverage part of their salary and time - via compounding interest - to amass a retirement nest egg. The greater the investment and time the greater the nest egg. Many entrepreneurs and business owners leverage the time, knowledge, skills and abilities of employees or they leverage scarce resources, government contracts, or technology to earn a profit. Real estate investors leverage other people’s money via mortgages to generate a stream of rental income and inventors leverage their creativity and our intellectual property laws to generate a stream of royalty and licensing income.

Once you figure out what you are currently leveraging, you can then start planning on ensuring that that leveraged resource will continue to be around in the future and you can work on increasing the payout for that resource. If you are leveraging your time as an employee to generate a salary and leveraging part of that salary to grow a retirement nest egg, it makes a lot of sense to take steps to ensure that your salary continues to come in and to take steps to increase your salary. The same principles apply if you are leveraging the time and skills of your employees to generate a profit or if you are leveraging other resources to generate income or profits.

By figuring out what you are currently leveraging, you can also begin thinking about other resources that you might leverage to help achieve your financial goals. The more leveraged resources that are working for you, the greater your chances of amassing wealth and, ultimately, realizing all of your financial goals.

As a financial planner and as a youth soccer coach, it is my job to help people understand what leverage they are taking advantage of, to take steps to protect those resources, and to help them recognize and harvest untapped resources that are available to them.

It’s a long word, entrepreneur, and it can be a bit intimidating, conjuring images of outgoing people who seem to always know where the next big thing in business is coming from. However, there are qualities to the entrepreneur that are in many of us, and you can find your inner entrepreneur and work toward a more satisfying career, whether you choose to work in a traditional format or open your own business.

Develop Your Inner Entrepreneur

Many qualities of the entrepreneur can be learned and developed. The spirit that drives successful businesswomen is sometimes an innate thing, and this shouldn’t be disqualified. However, this spirit, when combined with personal drive and common sense business applications can lead to great things. You can encourage your inner entrepreneur and learn the tools.

What makes an entrepreneur? While there is no set list, the following qualities tend to be common among those who “have what it takes.”

• The ability to set clear, measurable goals

• The ability to seek out information and resources to reach your goals

• Leadership qualities

• Motivation

• A competitive spirit

• An idea or better way to do things

• Experience or knowledge of your specialty (niche)

• The willingness to do what it takes to succeed

All of these traits can be learned or developed. Sometimes simply knowing what you want is enough to kick your motivation and entrepreneurial spirit into gear. This is where determining and setting goals can be very useful. If you haven’t done so recently, take the time to work on your goals. Read a book, enroll in a seminar, or simply sit down with a pen and paper (or keyboard and monitor). Successful entrepreneurs have a strong sense of direction.

Once you know where you want to go, you can figure out what you need to get there. This may be answered easily or it may require some research. If you need help determining how and where to get information, consider using local and industry-specific organizations. The local chamber of commerce or women in business organizations can provide a wealth of information. Join organizations specific to your industry as well. These organizations are often worth the cost of membership.

Organizations are also a great way to practice leadership skills, such as making presentations, volunteering and leading committees, and networking. If you’re not comfortable with or do not have many opportunities to practice your leadership skills, organizations can be a great way to begin and there’s often less pressure, which can make it easier. You may feel much more comfortable asking people to support a good cause financially before you start meeting with venture capitalists to fund your new product line.

To help with motivation and your overall business drive, consider listening to motivational tapes and attending seminars and conferences. Sure, some of these are filled with a lot of hype and little applicable information–but many others have some good, solid advice. Do some research, use the library, and ask others for suggestions.

Keep an ongoing journal or file of ways to improve the way you pitch a product or provide a service. Observe and research your competition. What are they doing right? What are they doing wrong? How can you do it better? Write it all down, even if it seems like an idea you’ll be sure to remember, as those are often the ones that slip our minds.

If you want to have the entrepreneurial spirit, observe and model other entrepreneurs. Talk with them, learn how they think, and start acting and talking that way yourself. Develop your entrepreneurial skills, and before you know it, you’ll be mentoring the next up-and-coming businesswoman yourself.
