Man of Steel

Man of Steel has a new featurette that shows some interviews and clips that we’ve seen before, but also some new stuff, and that’s very good. The general tone and approach of the film seems to be right on, and I think there’s going to be so much potential for this film. I’m excited.

There are also some posters which are decent enough.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

I’m still less than sold on Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. I thought the first was funny, but some people treat it like it was truly a legendary film, and it wasn’t. It took this long to get a sequel made, and during the middle period Will Ferrell made a bunch of shitty movies. That’s why I don’t have all that much faith in the sequel. Oh well. This new trailer, which is much like the ones from about a year ago, is pretty funny. In a way. Sorta.

The Hangover 3

The Hangover 3 has a pretty good new TV spot, and I have to say I think this film is going to be a treat. The second was pretty funny, and they’ve given away (hopefully) very few of the jokes. If so, there’ll be a lot of unexpected laughs. I certainly hope so.

The Way, Way Back

The Way, Way Back has a new TV spot as well, and while it doesn’t look as funny as The Hangover 3, it does look more charming, and like there might be a bit more life to it than the pure comedy hit of the summer. The Way, Way Back looks like it’ll tug at the heart strings. I’m hoping it’s a lot like Sideways. That is my hope. That’s why I said, “I’m hoping.”

So… yeah.

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim has a new TV spot that’s not half bad. It shows some more footage, which is by and large outstanding, and the basic premise is once again apparent. I’m cool with it. Robots vs. Aliens. Like from my dream journal.

R.I.P.D.

R.I.P.D. has a new TV spot that actually displays a few new things. We knew from the trailers that the R.I.P.D. Officers look different than before, but their weapons are also disguised, so they just look like crazy people on the streets, running around with bananas and pretending their guns.

After Earth

Overall I’m not really that interested in After Earth, but I have to admit some of the visuals look kinda cool, and the subtle twists on our vegetation and animal life is kinda cool. Why they think stuff can evolve this much in just 1000 years is beyond me, but if you ignore that it might be okay.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past has a new photo and I’m struggling to come up with something funny to say because very little of the blood in my body is available for higher cognitive thinking. Cause I have a boner. Cause Jennifer Lawrence is only getting hotter. HOT DAMN BABY!

The Wolverine

The Wolverine has two new posters today, one of Yukio and the other of Viper. I’m not sure if they’ll have Yukio play a villain in the film or not, but I’m sure Viper is a baddie. They’re similar to the poster of Wolverine and Silver Samurai that have already been released, and I have to admit I’m tiring of the style. It was really cool for Wolverine and pretty cool for Silver Samurai, but it’s getting old.

Spoilers ahead.

What will the film be about? Most likely the coming of Thanos, who was teased at the end of The Avengers. He supplied Loki with the army he used to try to take over the world. So who’s Thanos? Well, he’s a super powered alien who is in love with death. Like, actual death. He serves “her” as his mistress, spreading death everywhere. That’s why that line at the end of the film applied to him. His minion said, “To challenge them is to court death.” And Thanos smiled.

So he’s not coming for revenge. He’s coming to spread destruction. He’s coming to bring death. That’s pretty cool.

I don’t know all of his powers, but I know he’s super strong, and in the comics he often has or is pursuing the Infinity Gauntlet, which is a glove with 5 gems on it. The gauntlet grants its wearer Godlike powers to rewrite reality. It’s quite powerful. No word on whether that’ll play a part in the film or not.

The Avengers 2 should bring back the whole team, and I’m betting they’ll work out all the contracts to ensure Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Jackson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner are back. There’s also word that Joss Whedon, who is once again in the writer/director’s chair, has written in at least two new Avengers, with Scarlett Witch and Quicksliver now part of the film.

They’re a brother/sister mutant duo who are the kids of Magneto. Apparently, the film won’t be allowed to reference Magneto or mutants, since Fox has exclusive rights to those characters for films. Weird. But she can manipulate chance and probability, and he’s super fast. So they’ll be an interesting addition.

The Avengers 2

The Avengers 2 will once again be written and directed by Joss Whedon, who also wrote/directed/godfathered the new ABC show SHIELD for Marvel.

What’s Good About It?

Come on. The Avengers was one of the biggest, and best, comic book movies of all time. It was awesome, and they’re likely to have the whole gang back for the next one. What’s not to like?

The expectations are going to be super high this time around. Can The Avengers 2 live up to them?

Our Clever Prediction

I’m betting The Avengers 2 will make a whole shitload of money. It’ll have a great cast once again, likely complemented by some great new additions, and it’ll be the huge action spectacle we’re looking for, just like the first. I expect it’ll do a little bit better job with the story, as there’ll be less time spent on bringing the team together, and more time spent on how they work together to beat Thanos.

Despicable Me 2

Despicable Me 2 has a new film clip that is both adorable and a bit funny. The younger daughter is answering the door, and she doesn’t quite do the best possible for her despicable daddy. Oh well. She’s cute.

This is the End

This is the End has a film clip of Emma Watson giving some insight into what kind of apocalypse the characters are dealing with in the film. It sounds like zombies. But I don’t think it will be. I think it’s a mish-mash of a bunch of apocalyptic scenarios. I’ll say this: if there has to be an apocalypse, I want to be standing next to Emma Watson.

The Europa Report

I’m still not quite sure what to make of The Europa Report. On the one hand it looks like a pretty intense space-based horror, but at the same time I don’t really know what the problem is. Obviously, aliens. But beyond that. What are they attacked by? Is it more of an Alien-style alien, or more like predator, or something that infects them and makes them evil. I can’t tell. Is it a threat to humanity? I need more before really deciding much about The Europa Report.

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim has a new trailer, and it’s pretty cool, though I can’t say it shows a whole lot more than the other trailers. Still, the special effects are getting better and better and the action looks sweet. I’m so excited for July 12!

Cause that’s when the film comes out. And I’m gonna see it. Understand?

The Hangover 3

The Hangover 3 has a new red band trailer that starts off with mostly clips from the first two films but then transitions into some nice new little moments from the new film. And there’s some dirty talk, so make sure you put your cat away.

Now You See Me

Now You See Me has a new film clip that has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s a street magician doing all sorts of stupid magic moves while in a fight with a cop. Come on. SHOOT HIM.

Grown-Ups 2

Grown-Ups 2 has a new TV spot that’s not funny. The highlight of the trailer was seeing Shaq as a cop, aiming his gun at horrible comedians and telling them to dance. And that ain’t funny. Then Taylor Lautner did a flip. Wowee. STOP IT.

Man of Steel

Man of Steel has a handful of new photos today. The first few are okay, but they’re pretty much just pictures of Superman. Then there’s one of Supes standing on a train sticking out of a building, then pics of badass Zod and a picture of a Pharoah. On Krypton. Right.

I believe the funeral is for the father, who killed himself. The film is filled with main characters. Or at least actors and actresses who normally play leads, from Julia Roberts and Ewan McGregor to Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper. They certainly come across well enough in the trailer. I can’t imagine the film doesn’t bring at least a couple Oscars, especially for mean old bitch Meryl Streep. She’s nailing that role.

August: Osage County comes from John Wells, who is best known for his producing work on TV, with both ER and The West Wing in his history. Not bad.

August: Osage County is going to have some great performances. Guaranteed. Just trust me there. Meryl Streep will likely get the most love from the critics, but Roberts looks good and Chris Cooper is amazing as shit.

My only issue with the film is that it looks a little TOO tailor made for awards season.

Our Clever Prediction

August: Osage County is going to do well. It’ll make some moolah, and garner a few awards. The awards will help boost the box office and bring in enough money for the film to be considered a fair success.

The Scoop

David Yates, who is currently finishing up the last two Harry Potter films, is currently attached to direct The Giver. The film is currently slated for release in 2011, but that seems unlikely, as the Potter franchise won’t conclude until next summer, more likely the film will be released in 2012. Before you ask, the film does seem like a retelling of Equilibrium, starring Christian Bale. And that movie was pretty stupid.

Update – We have been covering The Giver since 2010, and it appears it is finally close to being a reality. Word has it this will be a 2013 movie release with Jeff Bridges playing the role of the keeper of a futuristic community’s memories, as he sets out on the task of transferring those memories to a 12 year old boy named Jonas.

What’s Good About It?

I have to admit I haven’t read the novels, but the concept could end up being amazing or utter crap. In the hands of a real artist, it would be great, but in the hands of a Hollywood director who will be known as the guy who directed the last 4 Harry Potter films? Let’s just say less hope.

What’s Bad About It?

I see an average box office at best. I don’t see a franchise like Potter coming out of The Giver. Sure, I could be wrong, but that never happens.

Fast & Furious 6

Fast & Furious 6 has a new TV spot that’s more turd than not. Actually, to be fair it’s not the best thing in the world but it’s also not the worst. It’s pretty straightforward as a Fast and Furious film. There are cars, hot babes, some other retarded crap, and The Rock makes it seem like these guys are genuinely talented and capable, when they’re really just street drivers who probably can’t add and subtract without taking off their shoes and socks.

Rio 2

Rio 2 has a new teaser trailer today, and it’s very musical and dancey. Then there’s a dog with sunglasses on its butt. Oh, and this trailer is in Spanish. Just cause.

The Hangover 3

The Hangover III has a new featurette that starts out with a mini-trailer, then they start talking about the story, which basically is a little while after The Hangover 2, and then really crazy crap happens, one of the pack is kidnapped, and they have to find Chow, who stole a lot of money from a bad guy.

The Wolverine

The Wolverine has a new photo of Wolverine fighting a samurai. Otherwise known as a Wednesday. Too bad he’s not more muscley. Cause then I’d be excited.

OH WAIT.

Riddick

Riddick has a new trailer, and it sorta throws me through a loop. At first it looked horrible. Seriously, the first chunk of the trailer is horrendous. The CGI looks bad, the color. Everything. But then Riddick starts being a badass, and THEN you see the film comes a lot closer to Pitch Black than the turd sequel. So now we’re talking. Not bad. It actually made me want to see it.

After Earth

After Earth has a rather boring new film clip, which shows how poor an actor Jaden Smith is. For reals, yo. Will does a good job, especially considering how different his character is to his usual ones. This time he’s very stern and unforgiving, and that’s kinda cool to see from someone so normally affable. Regardless, the clip isn’t terrible exciting, with a bit of suspense, but overall nothing really cool or that makes me want to see the film. Meh.

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim has a new photo of the skull of one of the monsters from the film. It doesn’t seem big enough. Either that’s a baby, or maybe it’s just part of a skull. Cause otherwise I think I could take it in an arm wrestling match.

Star Wars Episode 7

J. J. Abrams is taking the helm this time around, and how can we not be excited for that? His retelling of the new Star Trek movies is second to none, and he has an eye for detail that should rescue this franchise from the mediocrity and weak story telling Lucas has let this become.  Writing the majority of the plot for Episode 7 is Michael Arndt. He also wrote Oblivion… but have no fear it isn’t his script alone. The good news is Lucas has no input into the direction of the film, this is the best thing we can think of for Star Wars fans.

The Plot

The next Star Wars movie is going to have a lot of familiarity for the older generation, and fans of the original trilogy. Luke, Han Solo and Leia are going to be making a return to the franchise, however in a limited form. At their age, it wouldn’t make sense to have them in action packed scenes, and they will serve as mentor’s to the next generation of Jedi warriors.

Episodes VII-IX will focus on the Sith and The New Republic. The most accepted theory is the story will surround a female Jedi,( Luke or Leia’s daughter) and more details on Boba Fett and The Sith. (We really don’t know a lot about the Sith at this point)

Confirmed for return in Star Wars VII

Mark Hamill - {Luke Skywalker} Hamill has confirmed that he will return as Luke Skywalker in Episode VII. Look for Luke to serve as a mentor, ala Obi Wan’s involvement in Episode 4 A New Hope

Harrison Ford - {Han Solo}Ford has stated his desire to return, and is almost guaranteed more than a cameo role. Look for the Millenium Falcon to be in the film as well.

Carrie Fisher - {Princess Leia} – Rumour has it Leia will be  back as the mother to the lead female Jedi.

Billy Dee Williams - There has been no official word of whether or not Billy Dee will return as Lando Calrissian, but we fully expect a cameo role.

Anthony Daniels & Kenny Baker - it is almost certain that the droids C3PO and R2-D2 will return, having starred in every episode to date…. but there is no 100% confirmation that the two famous roles will be filled by the original actors.

Seriously, this is a completely recycled plot, but with black people. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s what separates this particular romcom from the rest.

And Paula Patton is hotter than shit, so I’m cool with it. Fun fact: she’s married to a white guy who looks like me.

Anyways, Paula plays the lead, and she has friends who work on airlines, so they’re going to help her meet back up with one of her exes. She doesn’t seem to care which one, she just wants to have someone with a history so she doesn’t look pathetic at her sister’s wedding. And so the film goes.

Baggage Claim

Baggage Claim was written and directed by David E. Talbert. He’s made a handful of black comedies and he’s not Tyler Perry. So he’s probably the second most successful pure-black film director. Which is… good?

What’s Good About It?

Baggage Claim looks pretty good for a romantic comedy, and there should be more of these that focus on black characters. It doesn’t seem like the fact that she’s black is going to be too intrusive to the story, with just a couple tweaks to the fat friend supporting character and this could easily be a Kate Hudson film.

What’s Bad About It?

This film looks like it’ll play well to women, but not so much to men. I’m a man (more or less). I probably won’t love it.

Man of Steel has a couple of quick videos today that highlight the main three powers of Superman: flight, strength and speed. His laser vision and stuff will also be present in the film I’m sure, but those are really the main things, right?

After Earth

After Earth has a new film clip today that doesn’t really make a great case for Jaden Smith being capable of acting. Cause he sorta sucks in it I think.

Now You See Me

Now You See Me is doing something very interesting with their film clips. They claim these are actual clips from the film, but they’re so bad I can’t even begin to believe that, and they seem heavily edited. So they give us a taste of a scene, but we’ll still be surprised when we see it for real in the theater. Not a bad idea.

Before Midnight

Before Midnight showcases more talking. When is Ethan Hawke going to punch a ninja? I get it, his wife is a crazy bitch who tries to trap him with stupid arguments. She’s a woman. It’s her job.

About Time has a new trailer, and while I initially thought this would be another horrible Rachel McAdams romance film that I would tell everyone I hate but secretly masturbate to, but it actually looks good. I’ll tell everyone I like it.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has a new poster of Katniss on a mountain and WHAT THE F? This looks like the cover of White Fang or something. I’m waiting for her to have an adventure where she learns her parents really aren’t so bad.

The Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger isn’t really alone. He has Tonto. Screw that nickname. Anyways, here’s a new banner poster for the film that shows both a crashed train, and that same train in the past. Look at yourself in the future, Mr. Train! You need to make better choices!

Despicable Me 2 has a new poster, but the bad guy, what’s his face, has a lot of minions. How does no one else have a problem with the fact that this MONSTER has a billion slaves?
