Post-Sun Care If you get sunburn, you need to put moisture back into your skin. Drink fluids to avoid dehydration and apply cold compresses or ice packs to affected areas. Choose a moisturizing lotion with AHAs (alpha hydroxy acid), and vitamin E, panthenol or aloe vera, which will soothe and heal the skin. Stay away from products with alcohol, which can sting burned skin and further dehydrate it.

If you get a sunburn, immediately take an anti-inflammatory such as Advil or Motrin to ease pain and minimize swelling.  

So remember to follow the sunscreen basics: Protect yourself from the sun and apply sunscreen before exposure to the sun and reapply it every 2 hours, since the chemicals lose their ability to break down UV rays as time progresses. Excessive exposure to UV rays can cause skin cancer and will make your skin look old and wrinkled. So wear sunscreen and enjoy outdoor activities without worrying about skin damage.

Just one episode of blistering sunburn in childhood could raise your skin’s cancer risk. Repeated sun exposure can lead to permanent dryness, wrinkles and age spots.

It’s not only bright sunny days that pose the greatest risk–You have to be careful on cloudy, hazy or cool days because the sun’s rays can penetrate some clouds and haze, and are unaffected by temperature. And sun reflecting off sand and snow can be even stronger.

If you get a sunburn, immediately take an anti-inflammatory such as Advil or Motrin to ease pain and minimize swelling.


Don’t go out in the sun if using certain drugs. People with fair skin have a higher risk of sunburn because fair skin produces smaller amounts of melanin, a protective pigment. Be careful if you are using certain antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline, anti-seizure drugs such as Dilantin or the acne cream Retin-A. All of these drugs can increase the skin’s sensitivity.

Anti-oxidants provide sun protection and undo sun damage

Try to protect your skin from the sun so you don’t have to do much to undo sun damage. It’s not only what you put on your skin that protects it from the sun. Antioxidant vitamins may help combat sunburn by aiding the skin’s ability to fight off damaging free radicals generated by UV light. According to a study conducted by The American Academy of Dermatology, people who took oral supplements of natural vitamins E and C increased their resistance to sunburn by 20 percent.

Wear sunscreen 

All sunscreen products have SPF (=sun protection factor) of at least 2. It’s not enough to apply sunscreen once. You need to know how often to apply it or should we say re-apply it. It’s important  to pay attention to the SPF number. It tells you how long the product will protect your skin based on your skin’s tolerance to UV rays. So if you turn red after 10 minutes, and you use an SPF 15, you’ll be protected 10 x 15 or 150 minutes. So after 150 minutes or before that, reapply sunscreen and you’ll avoid getting sunburn.

Nighttime regimen to help undo skin damage from the sun  

Step 1  After cleansing your face, exfoliate your damp skin with a gentle alpha hydroxy scrub. This will help smooth away dry, sun-damaged cells from the skin’s surface. Rinse with warm water.

Step 2  Apply a product with hydroquinone, a bleaching agent that helps fade blotches. Then apply a skin product enriched with alpha hydroxy acids.

Our hands take a beating. Do you neglect to wear gloves when you wash dishes and scrub pots and pans? Do you apply sun protection on your hands when you go out in the sun? For many of us, the wear and tear of life is most noticeable on the hands. Many people are self-conscious about dark spots (also referred to as liver spots or age spots) on the back of their hands. They consider these dark spots so unsightly that they wish to have these spots removed. This can be done by various methods including electrosurgery, laser treatment and cryotherapy. But first, a little background on liver spots….

What are Liver Spots (Age Spots) and do they have anything to do with liver problems?

It was once believed that dark spots (also known as liver spots) were caused by liver problems. Today doctors know that dark sots are not medically related to liver problems; however, they do have a similar color and shape to the liver. Dark spots commonly occur on our skin and tend to arise as we grow older, especially after age 40. Morning  Rub a small amount (size of a dime) of a glycolic acid-based cleanser into your palms with enough warm water to make suds. Massage into skin, focusing on oily areas. Rinse well with warm water. Pat dry. Smooth on a light moisturizer with an SPF of 15. For Sensitive skin
