After spending many weeks researching all the different programs available (I had NO idea just how many companies offer VBS programs), I selected the SonRise National Park because it seemed like the most fun and a good program to use for our first VBS.  It was exciting when the VBS kit arrived.  I couldn’t wait to dive into the materials!

In March I began assembling volunteers.  I am always overwhelmed by how God provides.  As VBS began we had 37 adult and teen volunteers in the building each day!

Over the past few months all the decorations were created, teams assembled, needed craft items and food were purchased, and children were registered.  On Sunday, June 24^th the Kenny Center and School building were bursting with activity as many people gathered to set up for VBS.

Monday, June 25^th through Friday, June 29^th we opened the doors to the SonRise National Park to 83 children ranging from preschool through 6^th grade.  To say everyone had fun each day is an understatement.  You could feel the excitement in the building each day!  When I asked some of the children what their favorite part of the week was I heard “EVERYTHING!” more times than I could count!  I also had several requests to extend VBS for another week.  A highlight of each day (in addition to the crafts, snacks, and classroom lessons) was singing and dancing to the theme song Cool, Cool Summer.

We have an active Parent-Teacher Union, which sponsors many activities and events for the students.  There are a selection of occasions for parents to get involved whether it be during the school day, chaperoning field trips, assisting at home with projects and more.

We are excited to incorporate a broadcasting system this year to inspire and enrich learning opportunities in media literacy.  This is another avenue that we are using to implement 21st Century learning and teaching, to engage students in experiences that come alive to generate life-long learners.

VBS is open to all children (not just St. Brendan Parishioners). In 2012 all VBS child participants and volunteers will travel to the SonRise National Park to learn about true peace, true riches, true power, true love, and true hope. Throughout the week students will discover and learn the Scripture stories of Jesus calming the sea, feeding 5000 people, the temptation of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, and the escape of Paul and Silas. As we explore the SonRise National Park we will learn some exciting songs about each of the Scripture stories, makes some exciting crafts using many items found in nature, and have a really great week!
