Big Quarters is a Twin Cities hip hop duo. They’ve been in the local
scene for quite some time influencing young music makers hosting events
such as Last Of The Record Buyers at the Fifth Element shop.

Sea Port Market is one of our favorite sushi spots in the city. They serve an Asian-Latino style sushi, mashing two of the best things together and creating some great food. Located in the Midtown Global Market, we realized that additional to being tucked away among a multiplicity of other stores, they didn’t have adequate signage.

The obvious solution was to offer our services. Hence, the sign was born. Andrés and Bill knocked this out in the last few days and watching the progress has been a treat. Check it out in the southeast corner of the Midtown Global Market in the upcoming days, and buy some Sushi while your at it.

STEAKMOB: So Adrian, tell us a little bit about the show you have coming up. Where is it?
ADRIAN HALPERN: I am proud to have created and will be creating a variety of new delights to showcase at Old Souls Tattoo Parlour and Gallery in Kansas City, Mo.  
This is an exquisite joint filled with endless visual surprises around each corner and three talented artists prickling your skin as you walk in.
The creations for this art show are an outcome of pure love of the process and formula from bugging out with spontaneous Neo-Geo and having the freedom to express myself as a mystical seeker of my identity.

SM: What are your philosophies attached to this body of work? How have they changed in your making it?
AH: Slowly, I am learning about layering when I silk screen print. It’s trippy. I enjoy printing in a painterly way, especially when combining colors for mono-prints. I am also combining silk screen, ink pens and markers to breath life into the paper. I am much calmer now when I create. I find it unique that after I finish a piece, it seems to resemble something you may find in a tomb or on an ancient scroll but with a modern man twist. We are all Alchemist of The Arts in different forms.

SM: Where exactly are you producing all of this other-worldly work?
AH: I am printing in Kansas City, Mo. at a fine establishment called La Cucaracha Press. I am honored to be there and have to say without these guys I would not be silk screen printing but writing sad Haiku’s about how hard it is to be an Artist.

To the person who asked me the last one, the answer is no, have you ever tried drawing on acid? Well if you have I think you know the answer…

SM: What’s a typical sacrifice you have to make?
LM: Hmmm, time, money, blood, sweat, tears you know the usual along with having a long distance girl at the moment which is pretty harsh I would say this is the first time in my life I have ever been willing to stick with a girl so I suppose that is the biggest one at the moment unfortunately…

I also don’t have any pets which i consider a sacrifice because I have had so many in my life but now I can’t because they require too much time/money/responsibility and I have little to spare in any of those departments.



SM: What keeps you up at night?
LM: Drawing weird shit, fucking with my room mate, cats meowing next door, a woman, Danish Export, coffee you know the usual stimulants. Also how to pay loans? I think everyone should be worried about that, although I am hoping the American government just crumbles soon so they leave us alone.

SM: What were your favorite cartoons as a kid, assuming you were once a child?
LM: Flintstones, Ren and Stimpy, pretty much anything on Nickelodeon also there was a lot of weird cartoons when I was in Mexico that I can’t remember the names of. I love cartoons still today, I am probably one of the most childish people you have ever met.



SM: How does living in Minneapolis affect what you create
LM: It doesn’t and the reason I say that is because other people have said it to me, “oh your art doesn’t seem from here…are you from california”  things like that get brought up to me pretty often, its probably the melding of all the cultures I have come across through traveling that influences me more than Minneapolis, this place is nice and all but the winter’s are 8 months long and barren as hell, I feel like I’m on Hoth sometimes. Unfortunately for us we don’t get to ride Wampas around.

SM: Where are you headed?
LM: Uh who really knows anymore, hopefully continuing to make some work, meeting talented people, get some skrilla, reunite with my woman and move to Australia? Sound good?

SM: So when did you first start traveling into space?
AH: “It’s not easy being green.” -Kermit the Frog

When I was little my mom designed a space kid suit for halloween which had velcro attached to hold the suit together. At age 4 my parents enrolled me in art classes at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in my town of birth of Kansas City, Mo. When the class took a walk around the museum to draw on newsprint, I always strayed away from the group to peer at the attractive Japanese scrolls and how quiet my mind became in taking in the contour lines, composition and wonderful shapes that were drawn to create the human form or forms.

I also connect with African, Oceanic, Aztec, Mayan, Judaic art (mysticism), ancient alien artifacts, tools of the unknown, areas of the world with mass stone structures and connections our civilization should understand from the tribes of the past such as listening to their bodies, the earth, their instincts and soul.

Around age 7 I found in my schools library the collection of Time Life books that opened my door to the unexplained of UFO, Stone Hedge, crop circles, the Shaman, herbal medicine and many other luminosities and teleportations. I felt immediately connected upon contact. The relationship between the art I saw was in my roots before I took a universal journey that opened my human brain that already knew.

SM: Who are your fictional heroes?
AH: Calvin & Hobbes, Wolverine, Fritz the Cat, Ash Williams, The Maxx, The Muppets to name a few.

SM: What kind of shoes did you wear as a child?
AH: Jumping into the original Tony Hawk shoes that came with a dragon sticker and I even got a t-shirt one time that I rocked. How could a kid not resist a fresh sticker and bright colored shoes?

SM: What’s the most interesting stranger you’ve ever seen?
AH: The UFO in the wooded area in Colorado that flew above me in an artificial cloud.

SM: What are your thoughts on commercial space flight?
AH: Humans have not even mastered their feet on Earth’s ground now. But, I always liked what NASA and the unknown government groups have accomplished with the Hubble Telescope. So, fly away.

SM: Top 3 mystical influences?

AH:
1 I am jewish and there is something curious about Moses. He always seemed to have the knowledge of an illusionist or had the power to create unexplained events that came from the heavens or from this planet.
Or did HE?
2 The Inferno of Dante. A man travels deep to find himself.
3 A circle. The circle has me mystified.

SM: Pixels or atoms or both?
AH: Pixels sounds like you have been hugging a cpu all day. Hook me up with some Atoms.

SM: Process?
AH: “Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me, the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one’s potential.”-Bruce Lee

SM: Favorite midnight snack(s).
AH:
1 Kashi Pizza with added veggies from the Farmers Market.
With a side of beer.
2 Turkey sandwich with havarti cheese, red peppers, cranberry walnut bread, George Foreman Grill,
then add hummus. Bam!!!
3 Sesame Sticks

SM: What’s good with Kansas City, Mo. ?
AH: KCMO has a lot of great things blooming. The music (bands, dj’s, producers, hip-hop, jazz history) and art (graffiti, murals, galleries, tattoo/gallery shops, dance, silk screen labs, etc). Our history here runs deep and should be generated into a movie and a book. Each one teaches one here.

SM: What other places do you consider second homes?
AH: Somewhere by the ocean, somewhere in the mountains, someone in between.

SM: Who’s doing it right nowadays?
AH: My friends and mentors come first, I have so many I cannot fit them all. So here is a few to check out:

AH: Sketching, movies, my girl

SM: Anything else?
AH: Currently, I am ready to silk screen and draw again. Focusing on my visions for my first solo show in KC or else where. I would like to show overseas and in the states, create album covers for musicians, create a book, I would like to work in fabric/pattern design and continue to build in my own manner. I recently created the demo cd art work for Perseph One and Thavius Beck for their travels to Europe and beyond. Which, I am very proud to collaborate with them. I also recently showed at the Alameda Gallery in El Paso, TX. They were one of the most professional galleries I have shown and worked with. An honorable mention goes to my friend Nicholas Naughton for without him I could not have silk screened and for everyone else that mentored me along the way.
