Irina Werning is a photographer who loves old photos. And she’s started a great photo project: she is looking for cool old photos preferably from people’s childhood and then she shots the same person in the same setup but already as grown up. It’s amazing how some people changed and some didn’t. Just imagine she dresses people up exactly the same way they were dressed in the picture, so it’s really looks like a “Back to Future” photo.

“I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future.”

Being away from Bali makes you feel every day how much you miss this amazing island. 2011 was my first year in Bali and definitely not last. I am coming back to Bali end of January and i already looking for new waves, new surf trips to other islands, new people i gonna meet and new surfing shots. So far few surfing shots made by me in 2011.

Rice fields, rain forest and temples trip around Ubud: Gunung Kawi (Valley of Kings) and Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave). Both of the places are interesting because they are the oldest ones in Bali – something around 1000 years old or more. Everyone has his own favourite but best for me was Gunung Kawi, although some might love Goa Gajah and especially a walk through the rain forest.

// Gunung Kawi is an 11th century temple complex in Tampaksiring north east of Ubud in Bali , Indonesia . It is located on the river Pakrisan.
The complex comprises 10 rock-cut candi (shrines) carved into the cliff face. They stand in 7m-high (23 ft-high) sheltered niches cut into the sheer cliff face. These monuments are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens.

Someone who is coming to Bali looking for perfect beaches and relaxed tropical vacations probably in the bungalow just next to the ocean would be really surprised not getting all this there. Yes, we do refer to Bali as paradise, but not the bounty kind of paradise you might imagine. But if you do look for that type of holidays there is a place where you should be definitely heading for a couple a days while staying in Bali. That’s Gili islands. No traffic, no busy streets, almost no people. Perfect white-sand beaches, lots of snorkeling and diving spots and turquoise color of the ocean.

To get there you need to take a speed boat from Padang Bay or Benoa – you will reach one of Gili islands, Gili Trawangan, just in couple of hours. You might also try a more twisted way to come there – taking a ferry to Lombok, then taxi to other harbour from where you can take a boat to one of the Gilis – but I would suggest this way only if are abig adventurer-type ;)

The islands are a popular destination for Western tourists looking for a remote island experience. Each island has several very small resorts, usually consisting of a small collection of huts for tourists, and a restaurant. Most local inhabitants live on Trawangan in a township stretching along its east side just inland (which is also where most recent development is taking place). Automobiles and motorized traffic are prohibited on the islands by local ordinance, so the preferred method of transportation is bicycle or the horse-drawn carriage called a cidomo. Diving in and around the Gilis is also popular due to the abundance of fish life and attractive coral formations.
The name “Gili Islands” is a misnomer, because Gili simply means “small island” in Sasak. As a result most of the islands around the coast of Lombok have Gili in their names, although confusion is averted by referring (in English) to the other Gilis around the Lombok coast by their proper names only.

James Mollison was born in Kenya in 1973 and grew up in England. After studying Art and Design at Oxford Brookes University, and later film and photography at Newport School of Art and Design, he moved to Italy to work at Benetton’s creative lab, Fabrica. His work has been widely published throughout the world including by Colors, The New York Times Magazine, the Guardian magazine, The Paris Review, The New Yorker and Le Monde. His latest book Disciples was published in October 2008 following its’ first exhibition at Hasted Hunt Gallery in New York. In 2007 he published The Memory of Pablo Escobar- the extraordinary story of ‘the richest and most violent gangster in history’ told by hundreds of photographs gathered by Mollison. It was the original follow-up to his work on the great apes – widely seen as an exhibition including at the Natural History Museum, London, and in the book James and Other Apes (Chris Boot, 2004). Mollison lives in Venice with his wife.

All the surfing spots are about waves, but allthough some waves might be nicer than others sometimes location itself matters more than waves. Some places are just created to be perfect surfing spots. Like G-land in East Jawa and others. And there is nothing more exciting than an endless beach, no-people & no-traffic area, just ocean, you and a feeling that you are in the end of the world with perfect waves – just like in this place. Just few friendly guys on the lineup, barreling waves that you can surf all day long, doesn’t matter what tide. The place where you definitely want to come back.

Marsa Matruh ( مرسى مطروح) is a Mediterranean Egyptian town 250 km west of Alexandria and 200 more km away from Libyan border. Marsa Matrouh is about white soft limestone sands and calm transparent turquoise waters.
