so, i realize i haven't posted in a long time;
but apparently my blog was getting spammed
(no worries though - i got that under control! hehe).

to explain my absence, i've basically decided to retire my blog a bit & transition over to facebook. i'm glad to say i'm very happy over there & am currently celebrating hitting 1,000+ fans on facebook (among other things -- 1,000 sales on etsy & launching my new fall/winter line)!

and on the topic of thank yous, a huge thank you to everyone that took part in making my very first photoshoot possible! the idea of even having a photoshoot seemed unlikely in my world, but thanks to amazing friends (and amazingly hot friends, at that), they showed me it was possible.

from having to chase down red balloons, almost getting in trouble for 'trespassing,' calling for favors when we were one man down, and devouring a whole bucket of chicken wings (but leaving the monster sandwich for raffy to take home like a starving child), it was pretty much an amazing day. and like i said before, i didn't have to do much at all. with all the natural talent that was there that day (in front of and behind the camera), i just sat back and let the magic happen.

If you guys don't recall, I did a show called Unique Los Angeles two months ago that not only proved to be pretty successful in my book, but was loads of fun. The talent there was beyond amazing, and Unique LA has just released a video to showcase exactly that for those of you that couldn't make it.

y'know, in case you couldn't catch our whole 2 seconds of fame.

i love simple accessories;
and i love pandas.

so it was finally time:

he's mounted onto a scrabble tile,
and sits comfortably on a ring base.

he's adjustable;
and can fit most very easily!

i'm wearing my own little panda right now,
and i can't stop smiling.

Today, I was caught indulging in a guilty pleasure:

Paper.

I traded for these (absolutely) amazing books on etsy, and the lovely little package finally popped up in my mailbox today! They completely fulfill my love for the feel of paper and my nerdy obsession with typography. Yum!

The 'Helvetica' books are by SeaLemon,
and completely bounded by her two hands!

I had a little obsession with bookmaking a while back--I even bought my own Japanese Screw Punch (that is now collecting dust)--and because I don't think I'll be making any books to sell anytime soon,
it will continue to be a craft I simply admire.

Ah, once again: an etsy trade I do not regret! Thank you, SeaLemon!

If you haven't noticed already,
there's something different about my blog.

The banner, the colors, the feel...
it's almost like a whole new place,
but it feels a lot more like home.

Yup, my shop got a makeover. Take a looksies.

It all started when I began re-taking product photos for my old listings. I really wanted to make my shop look more cohesive, so decided this was a step to do just that. My shop's been open for almost a year now, and it's really evolved with time. I've evolved as an artist with time. So, the idea of having my shop reflect that change and growth I've made with my business and craft only makes sense. Besides, I'm enjoying the clean, fresh look + the great amount of negative space.

Next upgrade to expect:

The weekend of Patchwork was pretty intense.

I had a performance with ChAOS the day prior;
ChAOS is the alumni team of CADC, the hip hop team I used to dance on in college. ChAOS gets together every year to put together a set (usually a mix of old school pieces and some new ones), and this year was my time to help coordinate the whole shindig... meaning the weeks leading up to our performance and Patchwork was... yes, pretty intense.

Before I continue on with the few photos I was able to grab from Patchwork, I want to take a little break from crafting to talk about my other passion: dancing. Well, dancing... with CADC/ChAOS. Before graduating, it was pretty much my life and my second family. While I don't spend endless nights in the parking structure practicing anymore, it's undeniable they'll always be like family. Not only was this my first year on ChAOS, but it also marked the FIFTEEN (or XV) YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE TEAM!

While on my weekend away from home preparing for my alumni team's Culture Night performance and for my show at Patchwork, I got a sweet etsy convo from Mod3rnArt inviting me to be apart of her new art project called, iStudio. This is her concept for the project:

Its birth came from me being interested in where (studio/workshop) artists create their pieces. I want to create a sort of canvas of pictures from all over the world...

I took a peeksies at iStudio, and fell in love with the idea. I'm the nerd that's always flickr-ing studio space photos, and to compile them all on one page is a genius idea. And for the curious kind, it's always interesting to see where people create, and how the space they work in is usually art in itself.

Too bad it's not that clean anymore, and I now have a lot more on that little table -- Yudu machine, Gocco machine, and all the supplies and inks for them! The above photo inspires me though, I think it's time to tidy up my space. Project: Declutter.

unique los angeles;

Can you find my booth?

The photo above was taken the morning of May 2nd, before doors opened for Unique LA's first annual spring show. When the picture was taken, the only people on the Penthouse floor of the California Market Center were the 275+ vendors that had dragged their products up the elevators to set up for the weekend event.

I didn't know what to expect from the event, but found myself more excited about finally having an awesome blank canvas to dress up in my products. With the corner booth with acrylic walls and two tiers of shelving, it was the closest I've felt to having a "boutique" at a show. Hey, a girl can dream, right? And being the nerd I am, you can bet I was uber excited.

The white acrylic walls acted as a nice backdrop for the booth, and the ability to play around with them and dress them up was an added plus. I rented two shelves to display my original artwork and mounted my prints up into a collage for better viewing. I finally found a rug that matched my set up (yay for Goodwill!), even set up my very own "check-out" station, and the colorful lanterns added a nice splash of color. It was nice to get a taste of what my set up looked like without the huge canopy and random outdoor backdrops... so while I will return back to you for Renegade, oh, I will still miss you so.

While I didn't get to spy on Jimmy Kimmel (who was there, apparently) or Oprah's LA editor (not that I would know if I had seen him/her...), I did get to meet some pretty awesome people at Unique: new faces in the indie community, photographers, and even got video-interviewed by Discuss Apparel. While being at Unique was both intimidating and inspiring, the people that make my day the most are my sweet customers! I didn't get as many photos in this time around, but here's a few snapshots.

1. Zac in the "I Am A Ninja" tee in heather grey. 2. Cheryl with her new "I Am A Ninja" tote in bright blue. 3. Anna with one of my last "Panda Face" zippered totes! I actually just printed a whole new batch today.

The other people that make me happy? The other vendors I run into at shows, the friends that come to continually support, and the few "OMG-WHAT-ARE-YOU-DOING-HERE!" run-ins.

1. Kristina and I; She actually attended the first Unique LA and made sure that I applied for the spring show. A best friend of one of my close friends, is a good friend in my book... thanks for supporting! 2. Danni, Amanda Lockrow, and I; Chit-chatting with familiar faces in the handmade community is probably one of the best things to do during a long day. 3. Sabiy, me, and Sabiy's sister; First time seeing me in action! It was good to see her face again, as always. 4. Jennifer Chung and I; Never failing to support, and even came dressed in her "I Am A Ninja" tank. Niiice. 5. Jennifer Chung, me, and Colin; Sandwiched between an amazing singer and a new friend. 6. Me and Belinda; Ah, someday she will be doing these shows with me as well! You can look out for her at our upcoming show, Patchwork. 7. Kristen and I; Haven't seen this girl in so long! We go way back, and us randomly running into each other at this event was a nice unexpected reunion.

And a moment to collect my thoughts...

Unique Los Angeles was actually the best way to finish off my mega-week of shows. Starting off with UCI's vendor fair was a good way to bring it back to my roots... where it all began, on familiar grounds and with familiar faces. Driving out to LA to finish off the week at Unique LA was my way of stepping out of my boundaries, looking towards the future, and no longer 'playing it safe.' Being alongside vendors who have made a name for themselves--vendors who I idolize and used as a model when I was first starting out--was, like I said, intimidating, but oh-so inspiring. I know I still have a tremendous amount of growing to do. But sometimes it takes me to stop and observe to realize that I've experienced so much more than I thought I would with barely a year of doing this on my belt. Barely a year. "Barely a year" ago, I had such a lack of confidence in myself that the one thing stopping me was, well... myself. To this day, it's still a test of how much I want this and how far I want to take it.

Let's just say, the passion's there and the drive's there... and hopefully, that's enough to keep this going.

uc irvine vendor fair: spring '09.

Exactly two weeks ago from today, I celebrated my 23rd birthday by driving down to the UC Irvine campus at six o'clock in the morning. I drove my Nissan Altima onto campus, unloaded my things, and took a minute to soak in exactly what was happening.

4.5 years ago, this place was foreign to me;
but it very soon became my second home.
4 years later, I'm now back home from college;
but I still consider it my second home.

So, it felt good to be on familiar grounds again. Only this time, I was fusing my new world with my past world... and it was definitely surreal.

Sometimes the days can get a bit long during a college vendor fair... mornings can start as early as six or seven and can end up being 12-hour days. Intense, I know. But with a comfy blue couch from a familiar place (thank you, Faigao), and familiar faces to constantly fill its seats, I was blessed to have the chance to mix work with a bit of play. I couldn't take photos of everyone that stopped by, but a big thank you to those that drove out to Irvine just to come hang out, and of course, even those that opted to stay at my booth instead of going to class.

{ STEPPIE CLOTHING IN ACTION }

Overall, probably the most amazing week I've ever experienced while working. Crazy enough, my week didn't end at the vendor fair, as Danni and I drove out to Los Angeles on Friday to set up for Unique LA. Yup, that means the work didn't stop in Irvine. That following Saturday and Sunday I set up shop in LA, and had an amazing weekend to top off the week. Because this post is so photo heavy already, I'll update about Unique Los Angeles in a future post...

Until then, a big thank you to everyone that helped me that week. Morris, for being so helpful throughout the week despite your busy schedule with studying, interviews, and competitions. I heart you so much! Happy birthday, by the way. ;) Danni, for being an amazing 'partner-in-crime.' With a 10'x20', it was like we had our own booths, but I definitely couldn't have done it without your companionship. And all the friends that stopped by throughout the week! From DC heads, present and past, to old Sierra fams... I still remember when I was just starting out and was hesitant to let any of you know about my etsy shop because I was embarrased and scared about what you all would think. Now, a half a year later, you guys have become my biggest supporters, and have become the drive that keeps me going and keeps me dreaming. Thank you for being so inspiring, and for letting me share this experience with you.
