Virtues of Visiting the Sick

It is a Sunnah of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to visit the sick. We should always visit those who are sick because it helps us to reflect and take heed, as those who are ill are close to Allah Ta'ala. We have only to consider that the sick person has no one to call but Allah, nothing to reflect on but Allah, and his condition reminds us of the blessing of health.

Hadrat Abu Moosa (R.A.) reports that the Prophet (pbuh) said, 'Visit the sick, feed the hungry and free the one who is imprisoned (unjustly).' [Sahih Bukhaari]

Hadrat Abu Hurairah (R.A.) reports that the Prophet (pbuh) said, "On the Day of Qiyaamah, Allah Ta'ala will announce: O son of Aadam, I was sick yet you did not visit me. He will reply, 'O Allah, how could I have visited You since you are Rabbul 'aalameen? Allah Ta'ala will say: Did you not know that so and so slave of mine was sick, and yet you did not visit him? Should you have visited him you would have found Me by him. " [Sahih Muslim]

Hadrat Ali (R.A.) reports that the Prophet (pbuh) said, 'When a Muslim visits his sick Muslim brother in the morning, seventy thousand angels make dua for his forgiveness till the evening. And when he visits him in the evening, seventy thousand angels make dua for his forgiveness till the morning, and he will be granted a garden for it in Jannah.' [Timizi, Abu Dawood]

Hadrat Anas (R.A.) reports that the Prophet (pbuh) said, 'When a person performs a proper wudhu (observing all its etiquette) and then goes to visit his sick Muslim brother with the intention of gaining sawaab, then he will be kept far away from the Fire of Jahannam by a distance equivalent of Sixty years.' [Abu Dawood]

Our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) also said, 'Whoever visits a sick person (for the pleasure of Allah), a Caller from the skies announces: You are indeed blessed and your walking is blessed and you have (by this noble act) built yourself a home in Jannah.' [Ibn Maajah]

Hadrat Ibn Abbaas (R.A.) relates: It is part of the Sunnah that when you visit a sick person, you should shorten your visit to him and make the least amount of noise by him. [Mishkaat]

Once our Prophet (pbuh) said, 'The best type of visit to a sick person is when the visitor gets up to leave without delay.' [Bayhaqi]

If we act upon these simple teachings, then the visitors to a hospital will no longer remain a problem for those who are in charge of the administration of hospitals.

Hadrat Umm Salmah (R.A.) relates that the Prophet (pbuh) said,'When you visit a sick person or (go to the home of) someone who has died, then speak only what is good, for the angels say 'aameen' to whatever you will say.' [Sahih Muslim]

Hadrat Abu Sa'eed Khudri (R.A.) reports that Rasulullah(Sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, 'When you visit a sick person, speak in a reassuring way to him (about his age and his life).' (For instance, tell him, 'Alhamdulillah, your health has improved' or 'Inshaa Allah you will get better soon.') Saying this will not delay what is predestined, but it will certainly make him feel happy.' [Tirmizi, Ibn Maajah]

Ramalan Checklist

A Checklist for Ramadan:

1. Ask Allah to enable you to reach Ramadan and to get the most out of it as the Salaf (early generation of pious people) used to do.

2. Intend to fast every day with Iman and pure intention seeking the reward from Allah alone. The Prophet peace be upon him said, Whoever fasts in Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward (from Allah) his past sins will be forgiven. (Bukhari)

3. Read the whole Qurâan at least once as the Prophet peace be upon him did.

4. Have Suhoor as the Prophet peace be upon him said, Have Suhoor because it is blessed.

5. Make Duâa during the fast because the Prophet peace be upon him said that three people supplication is not rejected one of them is the fasting person. Ask for the good of this life and the next for yourself, your family and Muslims in general.

6. Make Dua before opening the fast. The Prophet peace be upon him said, The fasting person has a supplication that is answered when he opens his fast.
7. Give Sadaqah and be good to people. The Prophet peace be upon him was the most generous of people and he was most generous in Ramadan.

8. Avoid anything that diminishes the fast such as, lying, backbiting, cheating, getting angry. The Prophet peace be upon him said Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink. [Bukhari]

9. Do not eat too much after Iftar.

10. Ask for forgiveness since this is the month Allah frees people from the fire.

11. Pray At-Tarawih with Khushoo. If you pray in the Masjid complete the Salah with the Imam. If you pray at home prolong the Salah as long as you can. The Prophet peace be upon him said, Whoever prays during Ramadan with Iman and seeking reward (from Allah) his past sins will be forgiven.

12. Feed the poor and invite others for Iftar. The Prophet peace be upon him said, Whoever gives Iftar to someone fasting he will have the same reward without decreasing the reward of the person fasting.

13. Try harder the last ten nights especially the odd nights. The prophet would strive in Ramadan more than he would in any other month and more so in the last ten days.

14. Say this Dua in the nights that Laitul-Qadr is likely to fall on: Allhumma innaka afuwun tuhibbul-afwa faâfu anni (O Allah you are Forgiving and love forgiveness so forgive me).

15. Ask Allah to accept all your good actions during this month.

16. Plan your time for Reciting Quran, Hadith & Doing Dhikr.

O you who believe, fasting is decreed for you, as it was decreed for those before you, that you may attain salvation. (Quran, 2:183)

· When feeling tired in Salaat, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s blessed feet in Tahajjud.

· When being prickled with thorns, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s pain from Abu Lahab's wife.

· When being troubled by neighbours, remember the old woman who would empty rubbish on the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM].

· When losing a child, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s son, Ibrahim.

· When beginning a long journey, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s long journey to Madinah.

· When going against a Sunnah, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s intercession, (Ummati, Ummati, Ummati) (My Ummah).

· When sacrificing an animal, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s sacrifice of 63 animals for his Ummah.

· Before shaving your beard, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s face rejecting the two beardless Iranians.

· When falling into an argument with your wife, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s encounter with Aisha and Hafsa.

· When experiencing less food in the house, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s days of poverty.

· When experiencing poverty, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s advice to Ashaab-e-Suffa (People of Suffa).

· When losing a family member, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s departure from this world.

· When becoming an orphan, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s age at six.

· When sponsoring an orphan, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s sponsor for Zaid ibn Haritha.

· When fearing an enemy, remember the Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM]'s saying to Abu Bakr in Mount Thour.

· Whatever situation you may find yourself in, remember your role model, the best of creation: Prophet [PEACE BE UPON HIM] Muhammad.
