When not cranking out new Guided By Voices albums at an impossible clip, American lo-fi rock 'n' roll hero Robert Pollard also creates music under alternate guises. As of two years ago, those ventures include Rip Van Winkle, a new band that aligns Pollard with a cast of Dayton-based musicians entirely separate from the dudes that fill out GBV's current lineup. Rip Van Winkle first emerged in 2024 with an EP called The Grand Rapids, then followed it up with their full-length debut Blasphemy in 2025. Now they've got a second album on the way under a slightly altered band name.

Guitarist Stephen Egerton joined the Descendents, the great California hardcore punk band, in 1986, just before that band broke up. When the Descendents were no more, Egerton played in the offshoot All, and then he rejoined the Descendents when that band reunited in 1996. Egerton has been in the band ever since, and he has also produced other acts at his home studio in Tulsa. Last year, he joined Hanson at Riot Fest and helped out on their Descendents cover. Now, Egerton is getting ready to release his first-ever solo album, and it sounds nothing like the Descendents.

Back at the beginning of the year, Hayley Williams announced that she was teaming up with producer and longtime collaborator Daniel James to form a duo with the great name Power Snatch. A few days later, they dropped the Bandcamp exclusive EP1, their first collection of songs. Since then, Power Snatch have covered This Is Lorelei, shared new music via Instagram post, and teamed up with London artist Tiberius b for a couple of songs. Now, the second Power Snatch EP is here.

Lately the Waterboys' Mike Scott has been busy posting AI slop and recording a star-studded album about Dennis Hopper. But to me, the biggest Waterboys story in recent years has been the endurance of their spellbinding anthem "The Whole Of The Moon" as a modern standard. Though 1988's Fisherman's Blues is arguably the UK folk-rock/post-punk band's definitive album, noteworthy musicians keep taking stabs at the lead single from 1985's This Is The Sea. Fiona Apple covered it in 2019, then Bleachers in 2021. Long before that, artists including Jennifer Warnes, Tom Baxter, Boys Of A New Age, and even Mandy Moore recorded the song. More recently, bluegrass group the Travelin' McCourys and Jack Garratt released their own versions. Today, we get a pleasing addition to the canon.

On any streaming service, Invasion Body Camera, the new collaborative EP from experimental rap titans Fatboi Sharif and ELUCID, shows up as a single 12-minute track, even though it's actually six individual songs. When I first his play, I didn't know what was going on. This is just a wonderfully unfriendly gesture. It's what Prince wanted to do with CD copies of The Black Album back in the day. I love it.

Godflesh Announce New Album Decay: Hear “Living/Ending”

Way back in 1988, the former Napalm Death member Justin K. Broadrick got together with fellow young Birmingham musician B.C. Green to form Godflesh, a duo who combined slow, heavy music with psychedelic textures and electronic techniques like drum machines and sampling. Their 1989 debut Streetcleaner was hugely influential in the realms of extreme metal, industrial, and noise-rock, as well as all the places where those things overlap. Over the years, Broadrick and Green kept Godflesh intermittently active, building a vast and inspiring discography. Now, Godflesh's days are numbered, but they have a couple of albums left to go before calling it quits entirely. One of them is called Decay, and it'll come out next month.

Back in the early days of 2020, underground rap all-star Denzel Curry and big-deal producer Kenny Beats joined forces for Unlocked, a brief energy-bomb of a collaborative album. The duo recorded it in a three-day studio session that grew out of Curry's appearance on Kenny's now-defunct YouTube show The Cave. These days, Kenny Beats is known as Kenneth Blume, and he's producing Geese and Weezer and shit. But he's still Kenny Beats to us, and he proved it when he and his old collaborator Rico Nasty got back together for the album RX a few weeks ago. Now, we're getting another Denzel Curry/Kenny Beats album, too — or, technically, a Denzel Curry/Kenneth Blume album.

Google tells me that that distinction currently belongs to the 8'3" Turkish gentleman Sultan Kösen. I am merely the tallest man in rock criticism.) Anyway!
