They’re so loose because they’re so tight. When Geese take the stage, they don’t re-create their recordings. It barely even feels like they’re performing songs with a defined structure — more like summoning a familiar sequence of chords and lyrics from the ether, whipping around riffs and fills like a marionette’s appendages. It’s the kind of free-flowing organized chaos that can only come from a hard-won mind-meld, from years spent coming of age together, instruments in hand. Underneath everything else, Geese have that going for them: They play like a single virtuosic organism.

Justin Cary, bassist for the Texan alt-pop band Sixpence None The Richer, has passed away. Cary suffered a stroke last week. Earlier this week, bandmate Leigh Nash shared the news on Instagram, as well as a link to a GoFundMe page to raise money for Cary and his wife Linda. Yesterday, Linda announced that Cary had passed away peacefully that morning. Cary was 50.

Tierra Whack can really, really rap. The Philadelphia artist is a super-inventive visual stylist with a ton of bright art-pop ideas, so it can be easy to overlook the fact that she's got bars. It'll be a lot harder once you hear her new record Whack's Museum. When she announced the impending release a couple of weeks ago, Whack referred to Whack's Museum as a "rap mixtape." She wasn't kidding.

You know what you're getting with Desire. Together, Montreal vocalist singer Megan Louise and former Chromatics leader Johnny Jewel make shimmery, whispery, glamorous synthpop. They've been doing it ever since their self-titled debut came out in 2009. Desire haven't exactly been the most prolific act over the years, but they released their album Games People Play last year, and they're already planning on following it with another LP this year.

He's a one-man institution, and he continues to do incredible work in his own personal lane. Last year, he teamed up with Armand Hammer on Mercy, his second collaborative album with the duo, and he got together with Curren$y and Larry June on the Spiral Staircases EP earlier this year. Maybe we'll get to hear that Erykah Badu album one day, too. Today, Uncle Al releases a new EP that includes four songs with four different rappers.

Key Glock Releases Effortlessly Hard New Album Project X

About halfway through his new album Project X, there's a moment on the "Dummy" intro where the reliably hard Memphis rap great Key Glock chants the famous intro drop from Tay Keith, the Memphis rap producer who was found dead yesterday. Tay Keith's passing is a sudden shock, and "Dummy" is the first time since his death that I got ambushed by a new Tay Keith beat that I didn't see coming. I'm sure that'll happen a lot of times in the months ahead. It shouldn't have caught me off-guard, but it made his passing hit that much harder. Tay Keith was good. "Dummy" is a good song.

It's such a great feeling to hit play on a Bandcamp record from a band you've never heard of and to know, within 30 seconds, that you're hearing something good. This morning, I got that feeling right away from the new two-song single by the Richmond, Virginia band Canaries. As someone who lives near Richmond, I feel like I should've already known about this band, but no, this is a Scott Lapatine discovery. Scott, in the Stereogum editorial spreadsheet: "forgot why i followed but this is good." He's right! This is good!

Last summer John Robinson and Leela Hoehn went to see the impressive young Chicago noise-rock trio Lifeguard at the Masquerade in Atlanta. It was an incredible show, but the bracing quality of the band’s performance left Robinson feeling bummed. If these kids are this young and are already that good, he reasoned, what hope is there for a guy starting fresh in his forties? “It’s over for me,” he remembers thinking to himself.

Beautiful things can be born out of unfavorable moments. Last year, FKA Twigs had visa issues that resulted in her canceling Eusexua shows, including a Coachella set. A couple of days ago, Twigs posted on social media about how she first handled the news. Initially, she couldn't believe it, instead choosing to dance the pain away, hoping her circumstances would change with each twist of her body. The movement didn't secure a new visa, but it did bring about the new song "On Your Mind" featuring Lil Yachty, which is out today.

The Strokes' rollout for new album Reality Awaits has not gone smoothly. Some fans have revolted against Julian Casablancas' use of Auto-Tune on "Going Shopping" and "Falling Out Of Love," to the point that guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. felt compelled to go on the record insisting that he doesn't hate the new material. The band's other founding guitarist, Nick Valensi, took an unexplained hiatus from the group in the middle of the campaign, and he hasn't yet returned. Then the release date was pushed back by a month, from June 26 to July 24. Now Hammond has offered a rationale for that moved.

Hitmaking Producer Tay Keith Dead At 29

The hitmaking Memphis rap producer Tay Keith has passed away. His regular collaborator BlocBoy JB shared the news of Keith's death on his Instagram story, writing, "We talked everyday yeen even tell me you was leaving." WSMV confirms that he was recently found dead in his Nashville apartment. No cause of death has been reported. Keith was 29.

Since Saturday night, seemingly the whole of New York City has been heartily enjoying the Knicks' first NBA championship since 1973. People were out in the streets all night after the team's series-clinching win in San Antonio, and many of them were belting out Alicia Keys' chorus to Jay-Z's "Empire State Of Mind." Keys herself sang the song Saturday night at the Tribeca Film Festival, where the documentary Alicia Keys: Girl From Hell’s Kitchen had a well-timed premiere last week. Unsurprisingly, she was on hand today at the victory parade as well.

The vast, sprawling $850 million edifice known as the Barack Obama Presidential Center — it's not a library, though it has a library — has been in the works for more than a decade, and it's finally ready to open its doors to the public. The Obama Center sits on a 19-acre plot in Jackson Park, on Chicago's South Side, and it houses a museum, an education project, various community facilities, and the Obama Foundation's headquarters. It technically opens to the public tomorrow, for Juneteenth. But today, there will be a grand-opening ceremony that'll feature performances from a ton of Obama's musician buddies.

When Sonic Youth played David Letterman's Late Show in 1994, a barefoot and pregnant Kim Gordon led the band through "Bull In The Heather" wearing the jersey of New York Knicks star John Starks. Gordon, now based in Los Angeles, was back in her longtime home base of New York this past Saturday — coincidentally, the 20th anniversary of Sonic Youth's Rather Ripped — when the Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years. "so happy to be in NYC!" she posted on Instagram along with footage of New Yorkers in the streets joyously singing "Empire State Of Mind."

Way back in 2014, k.d. lang reached out to fellow singer-songwriters Neko Case and Laura Veirs to see if they wanted to make an album as a trio. Case and Veirs enthusiastically agreed, so they all started working together in Portland for a couple of years. The three of them became a group known as case/lang/veirs, and they toured together after releasing a self-titled album, which came out on this day in 2016. Today, case/lang/veirs celebrate that anniversary by announcing a deluxe edition and sharing a previously unreleased song.

Asteroid Named After Elliott Smith

An asteroid has been officially named after the late, great Elliott Smith. Orlando Campopiano, an independent filmmaker based in Edinburgh, got the idea while listening to "Shooting Star" off Smith's posthumous album From A Basement On The Hill. He worked with Smith's estate to submit a proposal to the International Astronomical Union, and the governing body opted to say yes. Now there's a big rock out there in the sky bearing Smith's name. Lil Nas X Shares Update About Mental Health Treatment, New Music

Young hitmaker Lil Nas X has had a rough year. In August 2025, LAPD arrested the artist after the artist was seen dancing down Ventura Boulevard in nothing but underwear and cowboy boots. Police claimed that he charged at them and assaulting then, sending one cop to the hospital. Though he faced four felony charges, a judge granted Lil Nas X a mental health diversion back in spring, and he went free. Now, he's shared a video message to let fans know how he's doing.
